On February 2nd, 2026, an officer on routine patrol was dispatched in response to a concerned citizen reporting erratic driving behavior by a female motorist. An officer located the suspected vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. >> Here you go. Can you roll down a little bit farther, please? No, you're fine. It's not working. Okay. Yeah. Okay. You got your license and insurance on you? All right. I'll just come to the other side and I'll talk to you over there. So, I'm Deputy Hanson with Grundy County. Were you guys just leaving Gardner by chance? >> Um no, not by the >> Not Gardner? >> Um It was 113 with my older or my twin sisters. >> Okay. Where does she live at? >> Off 113. >> One We just passed 113. >> Yeah, and then I was coming back here to Morris. So, >> Okay. That >> You said Gardner, but >> Yeah. >> I'm not sure where that like applies because it just looks like home. Like Illinois from Florida. >> From Florida? Okay. How long have you been back here? >> Like 1 year. >> 1 year? Okay. >> And then I just reconnected with my sister. Sorry about that. >> No, you're fine. You got your insurance card also? >> Yes. Yes, I should. >> Okay. >> Sorry. >> No, you're fine. You are fine. Well, anyway, the reason that I stopped you is cuz when I was following you through Mazon back there, you were going to turn left, but then you didn't turn and the car passed you and almost hit him on the right. >> You said Mazon? >> Yeah. When we drove through the Casey's back there or right past the Casey's and the BP in Mazon, so that's the reason for the stop is all I'm saying. Somebody called you in that they were just they wanted a check vehicle done on you, so I was just was for you and then yep, turned around and found you. So. >> Sorry. >> It's okay. Do you have your Do you have the insurance? >> sure. >> Okay. >> I'm sorry about that. >> No, you're okay. Were you just picking these guys up? >> They're my children. >> Yeah. >> So, um >> Were they with you the whole time? Cuz you said you were at your sister's, right? >> We went to my >> Mhm. >> from here, my twin sister's. >> Mhm. >> And then I met with my nephews, which was my sister's kids. >> Okay. >> And then and yeah, we were coming back home. >> Got you. All right. >> You were asking what I was looking for. Do you have registration or >> No, I just need your insurance. I got your ID already. I just need the insurance. >> insurance? >> Yeah, but for the car. >> Yeah, for sure. >> Were you able to find that insurance? No, you don't have it. Do you have insurance on the vehicle? >> I do. I just >> Don't have it. They Okay. All right, if you want to hang tight, I'm just going to put your license stuff and I'll be right back with you, okay? You can back up. >> Huh? >> You can back up. >> Okay. >> Huh? >> Just back up? >> Back your car up so I can back mine up. I'm going to do fields. Well, I asked her for the insurance card six times and she kept looking at me and then just not grabbing it, so. I don't know if they don't have insurance or what's going on, so. >> [snorts] >> Driving definitely wasn't the best, so I'm just going to figure it out. I'm going to back up a little bit. Let's get these off. All right. >> Can I step out? >> Huh? Yeah, if you want, we can step out. I'll just talk to you at the back real quick. All right. >> I called the kids' grandparents so that >> Yeah, we'll we'll get we'll get all that taken care of in a minute. Let's just Let's take care of some stuff first, okay? >> So, I'll just step out? >> Yeah. If you don't mind. I'm just going to I'm going to talk to you in the back. I don't really want to do it in front of your kids, so. >> And I don't want to either. >> Yeah. >> I'm like their mom, so >> Uh-huh. >> Can I just like call their grandparents, like someone to pick them up? >> Yeah, we'll Like I said, we're going to we're going to get all >> like if I step out they're going to >> I can While you While you talk he's going to talk to you. I can I can stay I'll stay right here. >> rights, yeah. >> Yeah. I can stay here with your kids while he's talking to you real quick if you would >> Right. >> Is there Is there a reason Is there a reason that you already want to call the kids' grandparents? >> No, because if I my brother-in-law is a Morris police officer. So, I know he's like >> Who's your brother-in-law? >> If I step out and I'm the mom of like Yeah. So >> If you're worried about your kids going somewhere with not with >> young children, yeah. >> Yeah. >> And having I don't know, like I shouldn't have to step out of the car if I was just speeding, right? >> You weren't just speeding. >> What was I doing? >> Like I told you, you were bouncing >> And I I was That's why I was asking. >> Huh? >> That's why I was asking. >> No, I know. I told you when I >> So, I don't want to step out of the car because I have children. >> Yeah. >> And I would love to call >> Okay, so how long How long were you at your sister's house? >> Just down at my twin's? >> Yeah. >> I just um >> Right now it is 7:43 p.m. 30 minutes? Okay, what were you guys doing? >> Well, I dropped off my nephews to my twin's house. >> Yeah. Okay. >> I'm so sorry. >> It It happens. Like I said, my main concern is I'm just going to have you step out. >> want to step out of the car while I have my children. Did you follow me home? Would that be like a possible >> So, this is the thing. I don't feel comfortable letting you drive away right now. >> okay. I feel comfortable with you saying you're not comfortable with that, but >> Okay, but this is This is how it's >> my children. >> I I understand that. They're not going anywhere. You're not going to go anywhere. You're literally just stepping behind the back of your car. >> But that would Okay. >> All right. >> I'm not going to do that, though. I just >> So, here's >> He's following us home. >> I I can't do that. I got There's certain There's certain pals >> Okay. >> You can call Adams Is Does he Is he the one that lives in Morris? >> He's my Yeah, my biggest say. >> By the country By the country club, is that at Stapleton you're talking about? >> Um he's my oldest brother. >> Okay. How about you put him on the phone and I'll talk to him? Does that work? >> Um I don't have his phone number. >> You don't have his number? Okay. Based off of your driving, I have the feeling that you've either consumed alcohol. Have you done any drinking today? >> Actually, I haven't. >> You haven't? >> don't have my glasses and I don't know where I'm at yet. >> Okay. Okay. And that's another reason I want you to I would like you to step out so I can just check your eyes and then we can do a couple tests. If everything is fine after I check your eyes, then you will be on your way to drive home. That's the only reason I'm asking you to step out of the car. I understand you don't want to do that with your kids, but I can promise you nothing's going to happen to them. This deputy's going to stand right here. >> You still have my ID, right? >> I still have your ID. >> I do know my rights, but >> Okay. >> Have you contacted Stapleton? >> No, because you just told me you don't have his number. And I told you I don't know any Stapleton that works for Morris. >> Really? >> Yeah. But that's I know a Stapleton, but he works for No, not that doesn't work for Morris. I know somebody that works for Joliet P.D. >> Joliet, yeah, yeah. You see Yeah. >> So, that's him. >> came back and married Yeah. >> Okay. So, he doesn't work for Morris, though. >> He >> And you don't have You don't have his phone number? >> I am the youngest kid of like Stapleton's wife. Like that was my oldest sister. I just moved back, so I don't know his new contact number, but what would What do you need me to do? >> I would like you to step out just to the back of your car so I can have a conversation with you back there, and then we'll go from there. >> a conversation here, and you know >> I know you're going to say you know your rights, but this is the thing for everyone's safety involved. I just want to make sure you're okay to drive the rest of the way home, and that is all. So, that's why That's why I'm asking you to step out so I can do my job. >> you, like for everyone involved, to please give me this justice, and >> And that's I'm trying to I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt right now, but you're not You're refusing every time I ask you to step out. >> Not every time. I'm just at this point asking you >> Do you have Do your Would your parents have his number? All right. Well, hang out right here then while you're doing that. >> Thank you, sir. >> Yep. >> Thank you. >> I'm going to I'll try to talk to him to see what we can do, okay? But, yep. >> I'm really sorry about that. >> If you want to work on calling him and getting them getting them on the line so I can speak with them, then yeah. >> you need me to do to give me this justice. >> Mhm. Okay. Well, how about you work on calling your parents then, and then we'll get we'll get going from there, okay? I'll just I'm going to take it to the back of your car and talk to him, okay? Is that fine? Alex, you can stay up there with her. Hi, this is Deputy Vance with Grundy County. How you doing? She got called in as a check vehicle. Somebody was concerned they saw her in Gardner. Looked like she was I don't know where she stopped off somewhere with the kiddos, but you know, she was She was just putting them back in the car. Somebody noticed something off, like she was stumbling, so Yep. So, then I located her, and we were going through Mazon, and I just saw her make a traffic infraction, and I can It seems to me that she's been drinking. So, I'm just trying to figure out she doesn't want to step out of the car because she doesn't want to leave her kids in the car, but I think it's something else going on. And so, if one of you guys were able to come here to pick up her kids and then we can go on with what we're doing. No, just because of the fact that she's not complying with us between me and you, I'd like to figure out if she's even able to continue driving, you know what I mean? And if she is, she we can go on with the night and she'll she'll drive on home, but right now my biggest right now I just the kids are are all of our primary concern just because she's not allowing me to do my job because she doesn't want to step out and leave the kids in there, but she'll be 5 yd from the kids. So, that's what I was trying to explain to her. If you could if you could come pick up the kids, that would work. But like I said, I'm not letting anybody drive Janette home quite yet. I'm going to still do my job and then we'll go from there. >> So, she's 55? >> She's 55. At least I got a pretty good assumption. She's not stepping out of the car because she doesn't want to leave her kids in there, so I'm going to ask her again and if not, I'm just going to we're going to get her out and then see if she wants to field, so. All right, Janette. There's your phone back for you. Your dad is going to come here to hang out with the kiddos, okay? So, do you mind stepping out until and we can do all of our things until your dad gets here? Do you can you hop out of the car for me now? Cuz I'm just >> I can wait with the kids and then when he gets here I will >> That's that's what I'm telling you though is >> I will get here. I will step out. I get it. >> Yes. >> I will come out as soon as my dad comes out. >> Is there I just know there's I know there's another >> It'll only be like 2 minutes and I will come out as soon as he gets here. Absolutely. >> Yeah, but here's the thing. We're on the side of the road and I want to get this thing going. I want to get this process going. >> I get that, but as >> much as you want to get it going, you just give me a few minutes and then my dad will be here and then >> Hey. >> you've got me, right? >> How old are the kids? >> Excuse me? >> How old are the kids? Yeah, I'm just asking how old they are. Are they >> Okay. You're going to take I'm sorry, can I just so that I know, Mr. Hanson? >> Uh right now, we're just you're not really helping us out at all. >> I understand it, but my dad's coming. >> Yes, we understand that. There's nothing We're not going to >> I will. I Of course. >> Okay. >> But I want to do that when my dad gets here because that's what I usually do, right? >> No. >> When he gets here >> So, here's the thing. I've been asking you I've been asking you for at least 15 minutes now to step out. I don't want to >> to do that without my children, so like my dad >> You have three You have three sheriff's deputies here. We're not going to let anything happen >> I'm a single >> We're not letting anything happen to your kids. >> at this moment my dad's coming, right? And so >> Yes. >> I will I will step out of the >> Okay. We're no longer asking, I'm telling you. Step Step out of the car. Okay, it is it's a lawful order. Step out of the car. You no longer have a choice. You are going to step out of the car. Okay? That's where we're at right now. So, go ahead and step out. >> Okay. My dad's coming. >> Yes, your dad your dad already told me he was on his way. >> Okay. Um >> You can leave your phone in the driver's seat. Do you have a jacket or anything in the car that you want? >> Where is it at? We can grab it for you. If you just want to walk walk back and then we'll get it. Don't don't sit back in the car. >> All right? >> This way. >> We'll get We'll get it for you. Just walk back. Walk to the back of your car. >> Okay. >> All right? Let's just stand >> Let's just stand right here, okay? I don't want to standing in the roadway. I already asked you this question and you lied to me once, so now is the time to be completely honest. How much have you had to drink today? >> one. >> Just one? >> I came from my twin sisters and then my loss like I DIDN'T HAVE MY GLASSES. NO, THAT'S WHY WE CALLED my dad and like Adam is my brother-in-law. >> Yes. >> It was one. >> One time, one drink. What is what what is the one drink you had? >> It was a one Twisted Tea. >> One Twisted Tea. >> You will see like if you walk to the back of my car, you got the entire case like because I was buying it for like Valentine's Day but it's like for another two weekends is one gone from it. >> Okay. When you say one, was it a bottle, can? >> It's just like the one. >> Okay. >> Like the one it's a it's a can. It was something that I bought. >> Okay. Like I said, we're trying to get to the bottom of it. >> I know that. >> Especially with you now admitting to me that you have drank and you lied about it earlier, right? Cuz when I asked you, you said you didn't have anything but now you're saying you had one can of a Twisted Tea. So was it just one can or did you have more? >> oh, it was not like a recent thing. It was actually earlier and I hear you. >> What what time? >> Sir, and I do feel like you're being >> around like 4:30 you think is when you had it? >> At the latest. >> At the latest. Okay. >> appreciate you asking me. >> All right. >> And I appreciate you asking me now too. >> You want >> actually get a hold of my dad tonight? >> Yeah, you >> He's on his way. >> You called him and then I talked to him. >> Right. >> And he is on his way. Do you wish to perform the field sobriety test for me to make sure that >> wait for my dad? >> Well, we already got you out and out so huh? >> Is that okay? >> You are an You are an adult, right? >> Is it okay if I wait for my dad? >> I not right now, no. We're just trying to we're trying to I can't tell you what to do. I'm just giving you your options. But this is what if you refuse, I am going to you are going to be put in handcuffs. That's that's what I'm asking. Those are your the options right now. >> What do I do right now? >> It's a real simple it's whatever you want to do, yes or no. >> What would you do? >> We're not allowed to we don't we can't make that that decision for you. >> we've >> my dad to get them? Like me? >> All right, one last time, yes or no, Janette? >> Sir, like >> That's That's the last time I'm asking. >> Okay. >> Yes or no? Do you want to do that? >> I can't wait for you. >> You can't wait for your dad, no. >> Why? >> Because I told you you're not in control of this situation, we are. >> I'm sorry. >> Can I check Can I check your eyes? >> Sure. I don't know if it's going to be pretty, but like we can't wait for my dad. >> No. All right, so now go ahead and put your arms down by your side like I was showing you. >> Okay. >> Can you see the tip of my finger okay? >> Yes, I can. >> All right, so what I want you to do is follow the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only, okay? Do you understand? >> face, not my face. >> Not your face, just your eyes, okay? >> Just your eyes. You're turning your head. >> You're right, but I'm doing my best. It's very cold. >> Okay, last one. We're going to go up and down, okay? Like I said, just with your eyes, okay? >> Yep, let's go up and down. Jesus. >> Do you want to continue the rest of the tasks? >> want to take my kids home safe. >> In the way that you're driving right now with your physical condition, I don't think that is, so >> did all the tests and my dad's >> We We did one, so do you want to do the other two or no? I'm so sorry. All right. >> know what that means. >> Janette, do me a favor. Go ahead and turn around, put your arms behind your back. You're going to be placed under arrest for DUI. You can take the jacket off first. >> call my dad to come for my kids? >> We are not leaving anywhere until your dad gets here. We're not going to leave your kids on the side of the road.
