During my 24 years with the LAPD, I dealt with all kinds of reckless drivers. But every once in a while, you run into someone who has everything to lose. Good evening, Officer Cuffner with the Ste Police Department. The reason I stopped you, okay, was for speed. 100 on the bridge. Really? Yes. Are you serious? Um 100 on the bridge. I'm just trying to speed limits 45. I just moved here. I understand that, but 100. I had you going 100 on the bridge. Can I explain my reason? Go ahead. Okay. I just became a correction officer and I'm extremely excited that I'm in Then you would understand how important that is. That's that falls under the new excessive speeding law. But I'm learning. I just moved from Connecticut. Okay. So, corrections. You work for Martin County. Martin County. What's your name? Vanessa Alvarado. And then uh registration insurance. Can I reach over? Yeah. So, you're going home? Yeah, absolutely. I'm dropping him off and then I'm going home. And then do you have insurance? I have it on my phone. Can I show you? She's dead. You guys can search the car. No, it's fine. How fast were you going over that bridge? I have no idea. No idea. Well, I can tell you how fast you was going. The cop already said 100 miles an hour. Man, that's reckless driving. Look, whether it's in Connecticut or in the state of Florida or here in the state of California, I'm going to tell you right now, back in our days, and it still is uh current, reckless driving is a misdemeanor. It is, right? So, it's a misdemeanor coming in your presence. You got a charge right there. We're barely even touching this DUI that's about to occur. I don't know. Let's see what happens. I just wanted to get home. Yeah, I was celebrating. Yeah. Why are you celebrating? Because I'm a CO and I'm in phase one. Oh, okay. Just for my safety. There's any guns in the car? Absolutely not. Nothing. No drugs, no no guns, no nothing. You guys can open the door. No, it's fine. Don't you don't got to worry about it. It's fine. We're just We're just standing by while while my partner I understand what you're doing. Yeah, we're just celebrating. She just She just, you know, got hired. What's that? Where you work at? Martin. Yeah, she's got hired. She's We're celebrating or whatever. Did he already get your ID? Yeah. He has he has my license. Do Do you mind if I get yours? Why? Do you mind? Why? Am I talking to you or am I talking to him? I'm just asking. Honestly, I'm just trying to learn the laws. I'm a correction officer. He's also a correction officer. I'm just trying to understand like why I he doesn't mind giving it to you. Am I talking to him or you? I'm still trying to figure that out. You're talking to him. But here you go, ma'am. Here's the phone. No. No. But wait, can I ask you a question? Yeah. He just asked for his ID and I just said like why? I don't mind. Like he was we just try to get everybody in the car. That's why I said he's 100% willing to give it. Yeah. Yeah. Know we just like to see why. So I can know you guys, you know, you pull people over, you do that. Yeah. Let me fill in the blanks for you. Yes, you can do that. So I've talked about it in a prior video about the Brenley v. California case where officers have complete control of the traffic stopping the investigation and they can order passengers to stay in the car, get out of the car and ask for your ID. So, you know, look, give them your ID. What's the big deal? She's driving. She's the one that's kind of looking for uh an SFST right now. That field soarity test is brewing. But uh if you the passenger, right, her coworker, if you give him give the officer your ID, what's the big deal? It's unless you think you have a warrant or something like that, but I have to deal with felons and Yeah. literally kill people. Yeah. Yeah. So, I just have Where are you CEO at now? I'm sorry. Where are you a CEO at? Martin County. Oh, okay. At the uh at the prison. Yeah. Okay. Martin. How is it out there? It's out west out there, right? Indian town. Yeah. Indian town. I came from Connecticut. It's very different. Yeah. Yeah. Please don't [ __ ] me over. What do you mean? I don't know. What do you mean what? I'm scared. Okay. Um, can have you step out of the vehicle, please? Absolutely. Why, though? I'm going to step out. Yeah. No, I'll explain it to you back here. Am I going to arrest myself? No. I want to back here. He He's going to explain everything. Yeah. I'm going to explain it to you back here. Can I close my window? I'm I'm not going to drive away. What's up? Can I close my window? I'm not going to drive. No, just leave it up. Just leave it open. Come on. Leave it open. Step on out. Okay. He'll be right here watching your car with him. So, what is that in the center console? That's his drink. His drink? Yeah. Can I have my keys, please? Just leave him. Come on. Just leave him, ma'am. Over here. Just stand over here. He doesn't own the car. Okay. Can I have my keys? I know where's bed. No, ma'am. You You got to listen cuz I'm going to explain to you what's going on. I have reason to believe you're in Paris tonight. Okay. your driving pattern. Even before I had you going 100 on the bridge, you were all over your lane. Your eyes are watery, glossy. I smell alcohol. You have an alcohol coverage in your car. If you feel test, make sure you're safe to drive. Running looks good. I can get you out of here. But just because of everything that I've observed right now, and if you work in corrections, you got to understand it from my point of view. I completely understand. I'm not. That's concerning. Okay. I understand. Um I have a vape right here. I'll take it. I'll throw it in your car. Yeah. What we're going to do is we're going to do it over there. Um that way light. Can you just stand like this for me? You guys can hold it. Whatever. Who is he? He works. Whatever. He works with me. In what? At the same jail I work at. Oh, okay. So, he works corrections too as well. Yeah, absolutely. Okay. Who What was the other car? Oh, I have no idea. That SUV? I really don't know. You don't know there? Okay. All right. Um, no. Okay. We'll go over here. Let's walk over here. You go first. Yes. Can you go in my truck and grab my tape? Yes. It's open. We're going to do them over here. Okay. Can you just get my keys? Cuz I I just No, I can't. I can't grab your keys right now just because of my suspicion. I'm not going to allow keys on you right now. No, I don't want them. But I don't know him like that. Like I Why is he in your car? This is my sir, man. We got a key controversy. She's like, got some trust issues. She's like, I I want to hold on to my keys. Yeah, go ahead and grab her keys and let's get this uh SFST going on, man. Who are you to her? Uh we'll just call I'm not finding any issues. I know. Yeah. Yeah. I know the the actual problems. Yeah. Just be real. Like Yeah. I'll be real with you. What do you want to do? Whatever he's saying is right. What's up? I'm having him grab the keys and then we're just going to place them on my car. Is that okay? Whatever you need to do with them. That way you can keep an eye on them. I don't want the keys. I just want to make sure he doesn't have them. Whatever you do. I understand that. That's why we're getting them right now. I know that I did what I did. I just don't need my keys like absolutely out of place. Okay. All right. That's fine. I understand that. So, you could even search my car. There's no drugs. Like I'm getting my car wrapped this week on the 18th. How come there's a Connecticut tag on there? I just moved here November. How long ago? November 8th. Yeah. You got to get a Florida tag on that. This car is registered to my exhusband. Okay. Well, he's got to get a tag on if you're not. This is my car though. This is my car, but it's registered to my ex-husband. Well, you've been in Florida for a couple months. So, but this is finance, so I can't really just do that. Whatever you got to do to work out, just make sure. How does that work, though? It's in his name, like, you know, getting registered. Does he live here in Florida or does he live in Connecticut? He's in Florida. And you're using the car? I'm on the insurance. Do you like Okay. You're on the insurance and I'm a Is this like primarily your car though? So, you use it or It's primarily his, but I'm co-signing. You just go to um you have to get it registered through DMV. But like how would you do that if it's in his name? Well, you said you're a cosigner. Yeah. So if you're cosign that means you're an owner too together. But like Okay. So Connecticut, right? Like Oh, you're making me nervous like that. What do you mean? You just keep I'm just trying to learn how it is to be a correction officer in Connecticut or in Florida, right? And I'm a 5ft girl trying to be tough or whatever. We're going to do them over here. Let's go. They got your keys. So, it's got with that officer. Is that okay? Let's go. Okay. It was not in his possession anymore. So, you don't have to worry about that. My car. Oh, look at this. Perfect. Right over here. See this white line? Yes, sir. Nice straight even white line. I'm going to start by tilting your eyes. Okay. You know, I was getting ready to say like Steuart PD, man, you got to step up with that duct tape like the other police agencies have, you know, with them to, you know, do a duct tape color that is. But, uh, I saw one of your partners with the, uh, with the duct tape for the, um, the walking turn. Okay. So, you know, just thought I'd point that out that, uh, I know you guys were ready. I know you guys were ready to go. Um, do you have anything that would affect your ability to walk, talk, turn, things of that nature? I had a couple drinks, but besides that one, but no medical conditions, nothing like that. Actually, no. Okay. Um, are you wearing contacts right now? Yeah. Describe glasses. What I'm going to have you do is stand with your feet together, arms down by your side as So, am I going to lose like being a being a correction officer? So, the field, it's not a matter of like win or lose. It's to make sure you're safe to drive. That's why I did the Florida general field karate task cuz if you can do these simple tasks then you should have no issue driving right. So you understand okay so let me kind of make you understand a little bit. So yes he is absolutely 100% correct. He's doing his job. He's letting you know about this uh standard field so priority test. But I can tell you from experience having worked uh internal affairs in LAPD. I've been in this IA world since 2008. I'm here to tell you that when you're a probationary officer, you're a temporary employee, which means that uh you're at will. Okay? So, your police department, your law enforcement agency can fire you with no cause. And one of the biggest issues that always seems to happen with law enforcement officers are off duty, especially if they're alcoholrelated issues. So, it's just not looking good because not only you held to a higher standard, but you got to make better decisions. You just got to listen to what he's telling you. Like I said, everything's good. We can get you out of here. But we got I got to run you through these. You know, you said it yourself. You did acknowledge that you were going pretty fast. You've already told me that you had a couple drinks. Um, so I'm just want to make sure. So, just like this. Stand with your feet together, arms down by your side. So, do you see this blue light? Do you mind tapping it for me like this? Perfect. You're going to remain in this position. I'm like, my eyes are here. Bring it down a little. How about that? Is that good right there? So, remain in this position. Okay. You're going to keep your head and your head still and only focus your eyes on the blue light. Okay. Yes, sir. Do not move your head. Do you understand everything that I told you? Yes, sir. Do you need me to go over anything? No. Also anemic. But next one's going to be the walking turn. Okay. Using this white line. Um, what I'm going to have you do, okay, is at the very beginning of that line, you're going to put your left foot on it. Okay? Like this. See, I have it. So, put your left foot on the line. Beginning of the line. Yes. That's your right foot. I'm like literally freezing. Yeah. Put your left foot on the line. Okay. I don't think I could do this cuz I'm I'm actually anxious and nervous and any Yeah. I don't take any medication for that or anything. You don't eat meat at all? Okay. What How does that affect your How does that affect your I have low iron. I'm freezing. I don't do drugs. I don't I don't do any of that. I could try this, but what is it like 50 55°? Do you want me to see if there's a jacket in the car or anything? Or Do you have a jacket or anything in the car? I think I might actually It might be on my passenger side. I'll go check it out. He'll grab it for you. I understand that you're cold. I'll do it again. No, I understand. We're going to grab the jacket for you. Um I understand that you're cold, but I'm wearing short sleeves and I can do it perfectly fine. I'm going to demonstrate for you. I already admitted I drank a little bit, so I'm willing to do it. So, well, he's going to grab the jacket for you. We're going to grab the jacket so that way try right now cuz there's no cars going by, so I'm not that Okay. Yes. So, left foot on the line, right foot in front of your left, heel to toe as so. Can I do it with no shoes? Yeah. So, right foot in front of your left heel to toe exactly like how I have it right now. So, arms down by your side. You're going to remain in this position until I finish giving you the instructions. Okay. Yes, sir. So start jacket. No jacket. There's no cars coming, so you're good. When I tell you to start, you're going to take nine heel to toe steps down this line. I'm going to demonstrate for you. Okay. With each step, you're going to count back into position, please. 5 6 7 8 9. Do nine steps. Okay. Once you hit that nine, you guys not see me shaking. I I don't see I mean, it's it's a little chilly, but it's not it's not how it was a week ago. It's truly anemic. Yeah, I understand that. Somebody just No. Are you going to do the task? I'm trying to, but I feel like I'm going to fail it and lose my job. I'm willing to try it, but Okay. Well, it's a yes or no. It's a yes or no. Are you going to do it or not? Do you not understand like me trying to tell you what I'm I I know. I understand it. So, that's why I'm asking you, are you going to do them or not? But I came from being a felon and becoming a correction officer. So, I'm trying to fight this battle. How you sound? I know I'm doing it wrong by drinking and driving. Are you going to do them or not? We can't. We can't. We're not going to debate. But I'm freezing. Okay. Look, on prior videos, I have talked about the Nitsa, right? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that way back in the 70s, they did a whole bunch of tests and they said, you know what, officers, you can't be doing a whole bunch of different tests. So, you're going to do these three standard tests and that's going to be across the entire nation, right? All law enforcement agencies. And I'm bringing this up to say that one of the excuses part of the research indicated that the excuse that said I'm, you know, I'm I'm cold, I'm nervous, I'm anemic, which by the way, if you're anxious, anemic, and you're very nervous, uh, how did you pass backgrounds to become a correctional officer? But that's another story. But all these different types of excuses when you go to court, uh the experts have deemed it right that even though they're excuses, these are standardized tests and you can still do them absent like a really true medical condition. Okay, you're willing to do it. That's not a yes or no. I need a yes or no. It's it's simple. You know, you got to answer it. Can you just like feel me shaking? No, it's you know, it's a yes or no, but I'm going to feel because I'm shaking. So, do you want to do it or do you not want to do it? That's That's pretty much You have to do it because if if I deny it, I'm asking you yes or no. Yes, sir. Okay. I'm going to start from the beginning again. I got it. Can we just do it? I'm going to I have to give you the full instructions. You already did. No, I didn't. Well, okay. Let me at least finish. It doesn't hurt to to see it again, right? It doesn't hurt to see it again. It It hurts because I'm freezing. It's It's not that cold. I have low iron. Okay. Like I said, we're not going to keep doing this back and forth. Either you do them or you don't. I said I'm going to do it. Okay. Okay. Then I'm going to instruct you how to do it and demonstrate it for you. Okay. Yes, sir. So, left foot on the line, right foot in front of your left, heel to toe. So, you're going to take nine heel totoe steps down this line. Yes, sir. Can you get in the starting position for me, please? Right now? Yes. Arms down by your side. Like that. Arms down by your side. So when I tell you to start nine hook to toe steps and count out loud 1 2 start 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Once you hit that nine step take a couple steps back here for officer safety. I'm going to mess up my nine step back. Okay, once you hit the ninth step, please give me the instructions. Once you hit your ninth step, you're going to pivot with your foot back down the line as so. See how I did it? Just like this. Do you not understand? Nine hill toe steps as 1 2. He's trying to explain it to you. I'm getting it. I'm literally getting it. Do you Do you want me to go over anything with you? No, I don't. Do you have any questions? I hope you're not. Sorry. Are you counting? Do you want me to count or do you You have to count. One, two. Um, this is going to be the last task. Okay. You're going to stand with your feet together, arms out by your side. So, do the one leg stand. Okay. Um, when I tell you to start, you're going to raise whatever leg you feel more comfortable with. I'm going to use my right leg cuz that's what I'm comfortable with. 6 in off the ground, keeping your foot parallel to the ground as so. You're going to maintain visual on your foot throughout the entire time. You're going to count out loud as so. You have any questions, comments, concerns? Absolutely. Okay. You may start. I'm like I'm so Don't worry about it. Put your hand on your back because I failed the last one. It It's not a pass or a fail. Okay, look. The officer did say it's not a pass or a fail. I think it's a pass and fail, but I know it all comes down to whether or not you show the signs of impairment to operate a vehicle safely. I get that part. So, it's kind of like you're taking a test and you're either going to pass it. You know what? You're good to go or you're going to fail it. Nope. You're going to get arrested for DUI. So, no. So, okay. Can I put my shoes on? Yes. Yeah. We're actually What we're going to do is um get gloves. Okay. I don't have mom in here. I got some. I'm just going to bring you to the car and then we'll put them on that way. Do you guys realize I just lost the show? I know I did the wrong thing. Let's go. You just said we could put my shoes on. Yeah, I'm going to put them on for you in the car. Okay. We're just going to sit you down first. Why are you doing that? Because you're not That's because of what I observed. And I know what I do. Um, okay. Then you should know not to have been driving this. Quite frankly, you could have heard someone. Okay. 100 milesPH on the bridge. If there was a car in front of you that had to stop for, let's say there's something running across the street or a kid running across the street or a person running across the street. Do you not realize that? You would have made them go flying. I was a felon and I take a seat. Stop. Please stop. Stop doing this. You don't want to catch an additional charge. Okay, it's not worth it, right? Take a seat. What charge am I getting? Resisting if you keep doing what you're doing. Okay, what charge am I getting? DIY. And then you're also being charged with the super speeder. What? So, two charges. So, 100 miles an hour and then DUI. Do you have my license? Yep. And my key. He just Do you have anything on you? I'm going to have a female deputy search you at the jail. You have any drugs, anything on you? Cuz you go to the jail and they find drugs, it's an additional charge bringing it into the jail. Okay, so some final thoughts here. Look, in my 24 years with the LAPD and having worked in internal affairs, I've seen careers end real fast, man. But this one kind of takes the cake. And here's the reasons why. Look, she's a brand new corrections officer, right? In her probationary phase. She goes out and celebrates and gets a DUI three times the legal limit and she's driving 100 miles an hour in a 45 mph zone. Okay? And on top of all that, she's acting all entitled during this whole stop. Okay? Look, character doesn't take a night off whatsoever. Okay? And entitlement and bad judgment have no place behind a badge. Okay? Hope you learned something. Okay? So Vanessa was charged with the following. Driving under the influence and excessive speeding. As of right now, there is no final court outcome. But if history is any guide whatsoever, this kind of case usually ends with a lost job and serious legal headaches.
