At cops, we treat every call as a real emergency. But today's case shows what happens when someone tries to weaponize a police response. Take a look. >> Going to be conducting an investigation for swatting. Is this Ashley? >> Yeah, no. This is not Ashley. >> You need to sit down. >> YOU BROKE MY ARM! >> WISCONSIN DISPATCH RECEIVED MULTIPLE calls from the same caller reporting a shooting. Here's the real 911 call. >> Waukesha County Communications, Cindy. >> Hi, there's a man with a gun shooting with a gun. >> Can you spell the street, ma'am? I can't understand you. Do you have me on speaker phone? >> He's shooting with a gun. >> I understand that and I'm going to send help, but I need to understand the street name. >> I It's >> Okay, and it's Who is shooting with a gun? >> There's a man. He has a >> Okay, and what is the man's name? >> I have no idea. >> Okay, how do you know this is going on? >> Oh my god, he's shooting with a gun shooting rabbits. >> Okay, how do you know this is going on? >> Oh my god, it's just I can see him. He's shooting rabbits. He's shooting everywhere. >> Answer my questions. How do you know this is going on? I think this is Hello? >> Shooting at his house. Possibly a scam call. Caller will not answer any questions. Possible female caller. >> Bravo 5 76, how many units are going to that? >> At this time we have four. We're still gathering information from the call taker. Caller did not sound frantic. Possible female voice call. >> Bravo 5 21, I'm 23. There's nothing going on here. This is most likely a swatting call. >> Police scanner. >> You guys are good. It's probably a dog. >> What did he say? >> I don't know. You guys want to start checking the roadway for any casing. >> Okay, so the video goes on to tell us that the police searched for any shell casings or signs of bullet damage, but discovered nothing. >> We're good, guys. We're good. There's nothing in the street. >> Bravo 214, did the car sound elderly? >> They called through the Beaver Field trunk line, so we're trying to call back and see if they have a record of that phone number. >> What's What's that? >> Couldn't tell you. >> So, it came through the trunk line. What does that mean? >> No idea. Probably a dispatch term. But, the fact that it came in non-emergency tells me that it's most likely a swatting call. >> It's the number one sign. >> No. >> No. Okay. >> I mean, you know, whoever that guy is, I will teach him. >> Is there Did you hear someone shooting? >> I don't know if I didn't see anything. >> You didn't see anything? >> I didn't see anything. >> Next, we hear that while clearing the scene, the female continued to call 911 repeatedly from an unknown number. A sergeant instructed the clerks to forward all her calls to his desk phone. >> Couple questions for you. I understand that you're obviously scared for your safety given the number of times that you've called in today. Tonight, we have received over 10 phone calls related to a man actively firing a firearm in the city of Brookfield. >> Okay, as you can see, you know what? When you have a shooting in progress, cuz that that's what it is, is all hands on deck. All units have to respond, and you have to conduct a major investigation like they did to find out to see if there's actually shooting, some casings, uh go door knock to neighbors, canvass area to try and find out to see if there's actually a shooting going on or if a shooting had occurred, okay? >> Is that consistent with what you say you're observing? >> Yeah. >> Okay, we have gone through the area where you have claimed this has been happening three times tonight. >> Yeah. >> Yep, you've seen us there? >> Yeah. >> Okay, at this point, ma'am, >> He He has a camera. >> Okay, I would be I would love to see the video footage if that's something that you could provide for us cuz we have been in unable to locate him. I'll send an officer to look at that with you. >> No. We want him to be to be stopped. >> What's going to happen moving forward? We're going to be conducting an investigation for swatting. Are you familiar with that term? >> I hope I hope so. I hope that you guys are going to take him and his property into custody and investigate his whole property. I pray to God. >> Well, I understand that >> our children are are in risk. >> Sure. Unfortunately, we can't do anything because we don't have a complainant in this investigation. >> Well, we're worried about our kids. >> Yep, you've said that a couple times, ma'am. If you were so worried about your kids, I think you'd be willing to talk to an officer about it. >> Are you kidding me? Do you really Do you really want >> Spot on, Sarge. Look, the fact of the matter is that this is a swatting investigation and she definitely knows that it is. Of course, uh she probably seems to be under the influence of alcohol. We don't know that yet. However, swatting is a felony crime federally and local and state, it could be a wobbler. What they mean by a wobbler is it could be a misdemeanor or it could be a felony depending on the circumstances, okay? So, the fact that she doesn't even want the police to respond to see the video or to talk to her to get some more information about this shooting in progress uh just kind of indicates that, you know what? Yeah, we're looking at a swatting. >> We're going to pull the phone records from the phone company. We'll write the subpoena. Once we get your phone number, we're actively going to investigate you for felony swatting. >> What felony swatting? >> So, swatting is when an individual calls in a complaint that elicits an emergency response that could qualify as a tactical team to come out, which happened >> this. >> Okay. Well, you sound somewhat intoxicated. Are you Have you had any drinks tonight, ma'am? >> Are you crazy? >> Uh no, ma'am. I'm trying to conduct this investigation for you. >> Are you crazy person? >> Nope. >> He's been shooting shooting rabbits and doing all kinds of stuff. >> She sounds familiar. Uh who's the girl that moans got in a foot pursuit with and tackled? This was like 3 years ago up in >> Wow, good memory, Sarge. 3 years ago. >> We're going to end this. He's going to pay us 15 an hour. >> Oh, that's good for you. >> Yeah, sure is. >> All right, anything else, ma'am? >> Nope, have a great day. >> You, too. Thank you. Bye. >> Name is Ashley Corbin. I remember her. >> That's who I think it is. I think it's Ashley. >> Ashley >> Hello. Is this Ashley? >> Yeah, no. This is not Ashley. >> Okay. This is Sergeant Grebel with the Brookfield Police Department. You called us. >> Who is Ashley? >> I thought this was Ashley. >> Um why would why would you think that? >> Okay, well, Ashley, right now we are going to finish this investigation for swatting. So, like I said before, you can either keep calling and each one will refer out as a different charge, or you can stop calling and we can move forward from here. >> Guess what? Guess what? I am busy. You can stop calling me, Ashley. Thank you. >> Okay, you should probably slow down on the drinking tonight, ma'am. >> You should probably [ __ ] stop being a [ __ ] >> Okay. Wow. Did your payout not work out for you? >> Shut up, you [ __ ] [ __ ] Hello? >> I'm still here, Ashley. >> How are you doing? >> Um waiting for you. >> Yep, I'm here, honey. How are you doing? Firing a gun. >> Hello? >> Hello? >> Hi, is this 262 >> Yes. >> It is? Hello? >> Okay, so here's what we got. We got swatting. It's a felony, so now we're going to investigate her, and we're going to try and see if we can get some information from her. Who knows? But at the same time, she's intoxicated. So, this is not a good recipe. Voluntary intoxication, the fact that you have a felony charge. Let's see what happens next because it seems like uh we're going to go for a ride on this one. >> Building maintenance >> Okay, here we go. Let's see if Ashley's home. >> Building maintenance, we were here to fix a problem. >> The car is gone. >> Oh, what's going on? You're You're Ashley, correct? Let's uh you kind of tell me what's going on and I'm playing catch up here. >> What? >> What's going on? >> What are they What's going on? >> You I just understand Brookfield wants to talk to you, Cony wants to talk to you. >> What? >> You live here? >> My mom. >> Did you know officers were coming to talk to you? >> No. >> You were just You were just waiting out here for us? >> No, my mom. Can we get my mom out here to take the dog out at least? >> Absolutely. >> Sorry. I'm sorry. Come on, Princey. Sorry. >> Whoa. >> Whoa. Princey. Come on. We'll get you a treat. Prince, no, no, no. Prince. >> We're fine. Contact with her. There's no problems. Are they coming out here or they just want us to take her to Cony on the warrant? >> Princey, we'll get you a treat. Come on. Get you a treat. Prince. Get you a treat. >> Uh-oh. >> Prince. No. Come on. >> Let's go, bud. >> Come on. We'll go see Grammy. Are you serious? >> Listens pretty well. >> Grammy. >> Except for >> Prince. We're going to go see Grammy. Princey. >> Is this door open or what? She's trying to get the dog to go to Grandma's. She lives here. But the dog does not want to go on a leash. >> Prince. >> It's a 99 board. What's going on? >> Princey. >> She's being nice. I talked to her very briefly and it was confusing. >> Prince. This is not funny. >> Maybe we're not losing the dog. Hey Hey, bro. It's all you. >> It's not funny. >> We're not We're not laughing at your dog. >> All right, that's it. Prince, goodbye. I'm going I'm leaving. I'll see you later. >> That's the PC. That's what I'm like. That's the PC. >> See you later. See you later. >> Will he go without a leash? >> He knows I'll I'll be back. I'll see you later. Bye. See you later. See you later. >> Here he comes. Come on, Chris. Let's get home. >> Get over here. Get over here. You guys have been trying to talk to me? >> Brookfield does. We're We I have no interest in talk All right, let's go to your mom's. >> Thank you. Thank you. Hey, John. How you doing? >> Thanks Ron. >> Hello. >> Yeah, thanks John. >> This dog is so cute. So funny. >> Oh, dog. >> No. >> No, okay. I'm sorry. >> Naughty. >> Naughty dog. Ashley, so Brookfield wants to talk to you, so we're going to help facilitate that meeting. So. >> So what? What do they I want my attorney present. >> That's understandable. Okay, again, everybody wants a lawyer. Don't understand why people always asking for lawyers when you're getting arrested. You're going to be read your Miranda rights, and then if you invoke those rights, then guess what? You can see your lawyer when you go through the booking proceedings, and then you end up maybe even bailing out. You're going to have your arraignment. That's how the process works, you know? I suppose when you get out or when you make that first phone call, that's when you call your lawyer and let him or her know what happened. >> My car and my and my mom's apartment. And then, where where do you guys want me to go? >> Full full stone back stairs. >> Which one, attorney? >> We'll get the other side, sure. Yeah, we'll get the other side. >> Nobody without my attorney. So. Go and go. Go. Go. Oh, sorry. Where is he? You naughty dog. Come here. >> Can you call Colleen on your phone and let her know what happened? >> Prince, get >> I'm trying to get A HOLD OF >> PRINCE. >> PRINCE. WHAT? >> PRINCE. PRINCE, get in here. >> Can you try to call her on your phone? >> Can you excuse me, please? >> Oh my god. >> He's starting to learn up, and if they start up >> Well, then you should have put him on a leash. Come on, Prince. Let's get in the house. >> I'm sorry. >> All right, this is Officer Becorest with the Waukesha Police Department. Um >> Thank you. >> Are you able to connect me with the Brookfield officer that wants What's your name again? >> Ashley Corbin. >> Ashley Corbin. >> Holy >> In the city of Waukesha. >> Here in Bay Town, yeah. >> Okay, thank you very much. >> Granny. Yeah, go back, Granny. GO BACK, GRANNY. GRANNY. GO BACK, GRANNY. NO, this is Granny. >> Hold on. Uh, she got to come with us. >> What? >> You got to come with us. >> You want me to walk in here with you guys? >> Yeah, you got to come with us. >> Oh, I am? Oh, okay, then I will. >> Well, like what's the point of What am I What am I playing these games with you? Okay? >> I'm not. Well, I will. >> You're in police custody. You are in police custody right now. Yes. Drop it. >> Oh, that's fine. >> Well, like don't try to get us out of your apartment when you're under arrest. Okay, good. We're in cuffs. Now she's under arrest. >> You have a warrant, first of all. Second of all, Brookfield has criminal charges against you. >> That's two. >> It sounds like you've been calling in fake police calls, swatting, as they say. All right, after this >> Okay. >> All right, this is dog. Come on. All right, we'll move to the side while >> I did I did, officer. >> All right. >> So, in a relationship with an officer, so. >> Very cool. >> So, no, I'm not uh doing a a swatting thing with a Brookfield I think me. >> I wouldn't joke about that. >> That's that is a serious joke. Ken is a psycho. >> I don't know who Ken is. >> The the guy. >> We honestly don't know much of what's going on. We were told you had to come pick you up, that you have a warrant, and Brookfield wants to talk has criminal charges >> a Brookfield I date a Brookfield officer, okay? My my man is uh an officer, okay? I'm I'm not going to say because I don't want to >> You just said singleton. >> I'm not going to create nothing, but let me tell you something. The man >> Hello. >> Oh, I was trying I'm sorry. >> You're okay. >> I was going to the basement. I was pushing basement. You need to go >> No, no, you're you're good. Well, we got plenty of time. >> Can you please come out? >> Hey, if you need your stuff for >> No, you can you can take it. >> I was trying to go to the bathroom and I didn't know I was going to the third floor. >> No, it's totally fine. We're not in a rush here. We just All right, well, I guess we'll take it. >> I'm sorry. I'm I'm I'm sorry. >> You should be more Thank you, ma'am. >> Thank you. >> Oh, good. That was kind of rude. >> I am rude. I'm I'm sorry. >> That lady did nothing to you. >> I I'm a surgeon. >> What? >> I'm a surgeon. I am. So, I'm like I'm very particular. So, like I'm like >> have to do with yelling at a lady? >> I'm sorry. I'm a surgeon, so like I'm very particular. I like I I do stuff. Like >> Okay, what kind of a surgeon are you? >> Like I do brain surgery. >> I Okay, let's take a left. >> So, it's very particular. >> So, what does that mean you can be an [ __ ] to people? >> I don't deal with people. So, it's like I deal with dealing with digging in people's brains and digging in. I'm sorry. That's what I do. You dig in, you go and deep deep deep five and that's it. >> Brain surgery. All right, have a seat, Ashley. >> And that's what it is. Can you swipe my hair out of my >> Do you need your phone? >> Can you swipe my hair out of my face? >> No, thank you. >> Can you please >> No, we're not doing that. Respectfully, I'm not going to do that. Roger that. >> my boyfriend? >> Yes. Do you need your Your phone's inside, I'm guessing? >> My boyfriend is a police officer. >> I understand that. You said that already. We're going to sit here for a minute. >> What do you mean we're just going to sit here for a minute? >> What Did What didn't you understand about that? >> Can you please sweep my hair out of my face? >> No. >> Really? I can't breathe. >> You can't breathe? >> Blocking my breath. I can't breathe. >> I think the drinking was the issue tonight. >> I can't breathe. >> What are you doing? >> I can't breathe. >> I'm watching you breathe. >> I can't breathe. I can't breathe. >> Cuz they have criminal charges for you. >> Why? >> Because you committed a crime tonight. >> No, I didn't. >> I don't I honestly think your level of intoxication you won't know if you did or didn't. >> You guys are psycho. You are >> I'm going to have to agree with the officer. I don't think she even knows what swatting is. I don't think she comprehends what's going on besides the fact that you know, she's just heavily intoxicated and we got to get her through the uh, through all the booking procedures. So, let's see what happens. >> You really psycho? Yeah, you must be psycho to think that. Psychotic. Take your to the psych ward. I want my attorney now. >> No. >> No, I do. >> You're not right. You're not being questioned. >> Excuse me? You just said no. >> Yes, I said no. >> I want my attorney now. >> You screaming at us is not >> I want MY ATTORNEY NOW. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? You're lying. And you used me as a scapegoat under the bridge. You guys were harassing me under the bridge. And there was no cameras under there. And you guys were harassing me and me under the bridge. >> She also left like a big bag of beer in front of someone's door and >> Let's just turn her over and >> And you guys in the elevator. I want to talk to the police department. >> Yep, what's up? >> me in the elevator. >> Okay. >> Yep. >> We have body cameras. >> And I and I have and I have marks. >> We have body cameras and if you want to >> So do I. >> If you want to file a false police report, we can go down that road. >> You're lying. >> This can be a silent car ride. >> You said your camera to lie. And he was in there. I bruises all over my body from you. Wait till they see it. >> This trick is you can lock with her. All right, Ashley. Okay, Ashley Brookfield to your service. Here we go. Step on out. Step on Ashley. Come on. One foot at a time. Nobody's going to We're just having you exit the car. All right, let's go. We didn't confirm on her warrant, but they WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO ASHLEY? ASHLEY ASHLEY, JUST TAKE A DEEP OKAY, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THERE'S POLICE WORK AND THIS IS WHAT you deal with, okay? And she's just flying off the wall. You're trying to just keep composure, I suppose. All right, Ashley. I want to talk to you about you and your landlord. I'm going to ask you some questions about the incident tonight, okay? Uh before I do, I have to read you your rights, right? Do you understand these rights? Do you understand your rights, Ashley? All right, Ashley. Let's go. Stand up. Stand up. Otherwise, we're going to bring a wheelchair out and we're going to roll you in. And again, just want to be a reminder that agencies do practice this way where they'll go ahead and read you your Miranda rights before they begin the booking procedures. You don't necessarily have to do that right at that moment. Again, you already have the elements of the crime for swatting. She's got a felony warrant and that's enough. There is no talking, there's no questions, there's no interrogation. She is in custody. Let's just get her through the booking procedures at the jail facility and uh, call it a day. >> Ashley, turn back around. Ashley, get back on the bench. Ashley, you need to sit on the bench right now. Get up. >> No. >> Stand up. >> No, YOU BROKE MY ARM. >> SIT. >> NO, you broke my arm. >> Ashley, you need to sit down. >> YOU BROKE MY ARM. >> YOU GOT YOUR KEYS? ASHLEY, YOU NEED TO SIT UP. >> NO, YOU BROKE MY ARM. >> ASHLEY, STOP. SIT ON THE BENCH. SLIDE OVER. YOU want to just sit here? I'll fill out the paperwork. >> I want my ATTORNEY NOW. >> NO. >> HERE WE GO WITH THE ATTORNEY. >> YOU BROKE MY ARM. YOU DID IT. YOU BROKE MY ARM. >> UH, SHE HAS BEEN LIKE THIS the whole time. And you know what? If she broke her arm, then let's just go ahead and call the MT. In the jail, there's also a doctor or nurse. Let's get them rolling and check her arm and see if it's broken. >> If you sit forward, I got you. >> touch me. >> Do you have a Do you have an NCIC for swatting? >> Oh god. I'm swatting. You guys are so [ __ ] stupid. Swatting. Are you serious? You're really doing this right now? >> Ashley, we could have had a con- conversation like adults, okay? >> NO. NO. >> OKAY. >> OW. OW. >> ASHLEY, YOU NEED TO SIT UP. YOU SIT UP AND FACE FORWARD. >> NO, YOU DON'T DO THAT TO PEOPLE. YOU'RE A LIAR. >> CAN WE GET CONSENT TO GO THROUGH YOUR PHONE? >> Are you [ __ ] kidding me? >> Okay, maybe just maybe just let's go ahead and just let her scream and move around and you know, on the floor laying down, whatever the case may be. Uh it's all on camera and if she makes any type of allegations, you know what? Again, it could all be demonstrably false. >> A psycho? >> Well, it's a yes or no question. >> No. >> Okay. Well, had to ask. >> [ __ ] psycho. >> Okay. >> Stand for me right here and I'll read you that bull's-eye, all right? >> Okay, so a search of her phone revealed 15 calls made using a blocked number. She was charged with felony false reporting and resisting and later pleaded no contest. She received 6 months in jail and 6 months of work release with a 2-year probation hanging over her. But guess what? If she slips up, that's 1 and 1/2 years in prison sentence that is waiting for her. I can speak for probably all cops that we've been involved in a situation just like this.
