You have some information, man, that will be beneficial to the crime I'm investigating. >> Do you know a Trenton Berry? >> Trenton Berry is a scary man. >> Well, he went to court one day. >> Came back and was all pissy. >> He said, "You get out soon." >> I'll pay $5,000 if you kill him. >> This is fellow inmate of 17-year-old Trenton Berry, currently exposing how Trenton miserably failed at placing a hit on his own sister, Kaylee. [music] But, to understand exactly what led up to this, we will have to go back 3 months. >> Sounds like it was an accident, correct? We're going to be able to tell. >> Because on this cold November morning, Trenton murdered his own father, believing he staged the perfect crime. >> No, I'm not going to say you did. >> And the next person on his hit list was Kaylee. As she now survives this botched assassination, Kaylee would become the only person standing between Trent and his freedom. >> He said that there was some incident that happened with his step sister, and >> I am very convinced that I will find out what happened, okay? >> I hope so. I'll do my best to make things better. >> I've been in prison for 21 years. Absolutely guaranteed, this guy is a psychopath. >> With a population of just 3,000, Rollin Township, Michigan is a quiet, peaceful community in the state's southeast Lenawee County. But, for one family, that peace is shattered on the morning of November 30th, 2023, when 17-year-old Trenton Berry calls 911 from an isolated area of woods to report his stepfather, 41-year-old Kurt Stebbins, has been shot. >> 911, what's the address of the emergency? >> Yeah, hey, um Dad, where are we? Dad. Ma'am, my dad's been shot. >> He's been shot? >> Yeah. >> The 911 operator tracks the call to a remote stretch of woods off Rome Road, an area of farmlands and woods near the Ohio border, primarily used for hunting. Using this information, the operator assumes what happened was a common, but no less tragic accident. >> How was he shot, sir? >> I don't know. >> He was hunting? Are you hunting? >> Yeah, my dad's been shot, please. >> Okay, are you hunting? Is that how he was shot? >> Yeah, my dad's been shot, please, ma'am. >> The operator instructs Trenton to keep pressure on the wound while she makes contact with his mother, who uses location services to pinpoint exactly where they are. But as Trenton stays on the line until first responders arrive, Kurt's condition grows increasingly grim, and one thing he's sure of, the bullet didn't come from his gun. >> So, you don't think it came from his gun? >> No. >> It didn't come from his gun? >> No. >> Do you see any other hunters out there? >> No, not that I'm aware of. I see the fire truck. Tell them to pull right now. >> You see the fire truck? >> Yeah, tell them to pull right now. Help! I need some help over here! >> As police and first responders arrive, they meet up with Trenton's mother, Jennifer, who uses location services to point them in the direction of her son and fiance. >> I have one out this way and I've got one this way. >> What's that? >> I have my kid in my >> They're both out this way? >> I think I like 360. One of them's up here. >> Sounds like the victims to the east of everybody. You hear me on the cell? Up 400 yd? >> Central, this is 622. I see your location compared to theirs. You're going to be to the east and they're a little bit north. East a little bit north. >> The officer starts out on foot which is around 400 yd away, but soon a more convenient method of transportation arrives, one that will get him there much faster. >> Central, you got a little easy now for me here? To the north of you. Going to be to the north of you. >> Thank you. Clear. I'm going to go. Feel he's uh >> Going to work on him. >> I got it. >> 392. >> Be sure of location contact now. >> [clears throat] >> Officer, can I use your phone to call my mom? >> Officers arrived to find a seriously injured Kurt suffering a gunshot wound to the lower back. The bullet trapped inside him is a .350 caliber round, but considering this size is typically used for hunting deer, and unless he receives emergency medical care soon, the worst outcome, death, is also the most likely. But there's something else they don't know. This was far from an accident. It was the first step of a murderous plot designed to take not one life, but two. And if you enjoy killers like this realize they're not winning an Oscar, subscribe and check out our Spotify, where we upload podcasts every week. >> Which which which location was he hunting from? >> We were hunting out of there, both of us. >> Both of the same line? >> From over there, but you know, we were walking up here, you know. >> Which which direction were you walking? >> We We were We walked all the way out to the lounge. >> Trenton claims that while walking back to the vehicle, his stepdad was shot by an assailant from an unknown location, but as Kurtz taken from the scene, the detective listening in begins asking Trenton questions only he can answer, and the answers are suspect to say the least. >> What why are you I'm sorry to interrupt you. Why are you right here if your vehicle's there? Where are you guys circling? >> Because because they own on this property. >> Yep, we got a search warrant. >> Yep, and he's had people that's this Shakespeare. >> Okay. >> Hey, my dad No, I don't mind. You know, my dad's never shot at anybody. I've never shot at anybody a day in my life. >> Yep. >> My dad's >> So why are you going this way? >> Because we always check this area. >> Okay, so you check for deer? >> What bag is this? >> Just just just [laughter] checking for deer. You guys are walking this way? >> Yeah, just We were going to just circle. We >> No, I'm sorry. Is he Is your dad still walking this way? >> We weren't going to shoot over here. But we were just circling around, walking. We're looking. >> Okay. So you're walking that direction? >> Question, am I allowed to go right back down there? I don't know. >> They were facing this way. >> Yes, we were facing this way and I just heard boom. So No, my dad dropped right there. So I unloaded my gun, dropped it, took off my coat, and dropped it. >> What Where's your mag? >> My mag is right there. >> Right there. >> I'm just going to check it. Just >> Yep, I can only hold three rounds in that bag. >> Did you have one in the chamber as well prior to that? >> I don't There should only be two in that mag. >> So you did fire one? >> No, I didn't. There was one in the chamber. I unchambered it. >> Did that one go in the snow? >> And it flew it flew over here. So I Okay. It flew in this direction. >> has a live round. It's not a >> Yes, it is live. It is live. That is my dad's gun. It is unloaded. Yeah, both three of my mom's guns cuz that gun is priceless. Like if you know Harry Richardson's Have you ever heard of a hair a Harry Richardson? >> not. >> That is what that gun is. That is a 12 gauge. >> So we should have a a live round somewhere close by. >> 98 yards away. It's somewhere in this general area. >> What's your first name? Trenton. >> Okay. [clears throat] >> Trenton, are you obviously not >> No, no, no, no. >> Okay, I understand. >> Okay. >> Obviously, they're taking care of him. Can I get some quick photos? >> It's up there. >> Yep. >> Yeah, um my >> Trenton, how old are you? >> 17. My wallet should be either in that back My wallet's actually in that couch. >> What's the last grade you completed? >> Uh I'm in Actually, I'm I'm a junior. >> Okay. Uh now, this is going to be I'm a detective. >> Yes, I know. >> This is very important. Sounds like it was an accident, correct? >> not shoot him. >> Okay. And I'm asking you, it sounds like an accident. Or did you Did you guys get into a fight with anyone, correct? >> No. >> You're up there, right? >> No. Me and my >> You're up there, >> Yep. >> Okay. Well, I'm not you guys fighting, but you guys didn't fight with a neighbor or anything. >> No, nothing like that. >> No, I just heard boom and like >> Now, we're going to be able to tell the distance. That's one of the things we do, okay? If it's a complete accident, it's a complete accident. No problem there whatsoever. But we have a bunch of people looking for other people. What is going to occur is we're going to be able to look at his back and tell how far the shot came from. If you guys are No, I'm not even saying you did >> You didn't shoot my old friend. >> I didn't say you did. I'm I'm just saying if you were walking along and you simply tripped and your gun went off, that's fine, okay? That's an accident. They're going to work on him regardless of what happens, okay? You understand that? That's the extent of it. We do accidents. Um as it stands right now, again, being a detective, I can't have all the way through here. It's not saying a bullet couldn't come from somewhere else, but we're going to be able to tell if it was from 3 ft or if it was from 800 yd. >> While Trenton takes no responsibility for firing the shot, it seems the detective already suspects an accident may be to blame. But Trenton has an alternative explanation, a recent beef with some neighbors that's now turned terrifyingly violent. >> Okay, there is this one guy way up over there, not on this property, but on the other side. His name is Josh. I don't know his last name. >> Okay. >> But him and my dad and some other guy named Trevor have had you know, stuff in the past. >> Trevor Reister? >> Bingo. >> Okay. >> And I don't know what the the guy's last name I don't know the other guy's last name. >> Okay. We'll just hang out right here. >> Is it J What is it? Petty? >> Petty. I'm Deputy Petty with Lenawee County, yes, sir. >> Never in a million years I'd shoot stuff. >> Nobody's saying you shot your stepdad, but >> It kind of like >> Detective We have to check all all avenues, right? >> sound like that that he's that he did that. >> Well, we don't know. >> Yeah. >> We show up to a scene, we don't know what happened, right? We have to investigate and determine what what went down, okay? >> right now. >> I understand. I mean, you're going through a traumatic, you know, traumatic >> That is my step-sister's only parent. >> So, he is your stepdad? >> Yes. His daughter is my step-sister. >> with him? >> We [snorts] live with him and my mom. >> So, he's he's currently married to your mother? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> There's me, I have an older brother which he don't live with us. There's me, my step-sister, my little brother, and my little sister. >> Okay. >> My step-sister, that is his only that is only parent. Her mom and dad went she was two. >> Okay. >> So, that man has to survive. >> While Trenton seems especially worried about his step-sister losing both parents, the actions he soon takes and his disturbing history with her puts all of that into question in the most shocking way possible. But, there's someone else whose reaction he's worried about, his mother Jennifer, and not for the reasons officers expect. So, >> mom on her way? >> I'm not sure. What is I think your mother might be >> Is that your uniform number, Harris? >> She's going to blame me for it. >> Why would she blame you for it? >> World to Care. >> Yes, she would. >> World to Care. >> I already know she would. I love that man to death. >> Have you guys had issues? >> No. >> No, never? >> I mean, we've had not recently, but we've had in the past. And I forget all about that because at the end of the day, you're still my father. >> Yeah. And why do you think your mom would blame you? >> Because she she's like that. >> Well, I mean, I don't know. What does that mean, she's like that? >> Cuz you know, when I get mad >> Mhm. >> I have really bad anger issues. >> Okay. >> And you know, I get mad and you know, I'll go and say, you know, I'll kill somebody, you know, not meaning it. >> Mhm. >> You know. That's it. I mean I'm so glad that I can remember this because I didn't take my meds this morning. >> Okay. >> And when I don't >> meds for? >> Um I have really bad anxiety and eating disorder and something else. I I can't remember the third one right now. >> Okay. >> Real bad anxiety and and eating disorder. >> You have Well, you know, I got a bottle of water. Come to my vehicle. We'll get your hands cleaned off, okay? Just get that off you, okay? >> Okay. >> As Trenton's led away to wash his hands, he suddenly begins to realize he may be talking a little too much for his own good. So now he has a request. Before deputies ask him any more questions, he wants to wait for his mother to arrive. >> So, [snorts] one more thing. >> Yes, sir. >> I'm not trying to be any any any more, you know, I'm trying not to be rude. But if you guys do ask me anything else, I'd like my mother to be here. >> Okay. >> You know, I'm still a minor. I mean Am I or am I not? >> 17, yeah? >> Yeah. I mean, I'm not being rude at Am I or am I not? >> No. No. >> Daddy? >> Deputy Petty. >> Oh, Deputy Petty. All right. The heck Then then you might know Deputy Preston. >> I do. >> Yeah. He's a real nice guy. >> Yes, he is. >> Oh my mama. Oh my mama. >> Ambulance >> [screaming] >> Why are they still here? >> Who? >> The ambulance. >> Uh there's multiple ambulances that showed up so >> Oh, I didn't know that. >> While multiple ambulances may have arrived, the one containing Kurt still hasn't left. And while Trenton appears to realize the ramifications of this, he also seems to have other things on his mind and on his foot. >> Question, what time is it cuz I do have a doctor's appointment? >> 12:20. We'll make a phone call for you letting them know you're not going to make it. What's it for? >> Uh I It I it's easier to show you. I'll be honest with you. >> No, this I was going to say I still don't know what it is. >> I actually had a weakened non-weight-bearing constructive foot surgery and I haven't seen my doctor in almost 2 years. >> Okay. >> If you guys have anything else that I should be asking at my mother's perfect place >> Absolutely. What um What's your mother's phone number? >> It's actually in there. There's a password for my >> Okay. >> Sorry to have you guys come out here on such beautiful day. >> Yep. She's not answering yet. Uh you [snorts] said you didn't want to talk unless your mom was present. >> Well, well >> I don't know what It's your call. If you want to talk, you can. >> You know what? She can't get back to me right now. >> Yeah. Okay. They don't All all this is actually general easy stuff, okay? >> Okay. >> We're just going to now that everything's kind of calmed down a little bit, we'll start getting if you want your mom present, we can stop. If you want anybody else present, we can stop. You're not under arrest right now. If if If anything, do you think this was an accident? You don't think anyone did this on purpose? >> I didn't shoot, but I don't know if anybody else did it on purpose. >> Okay. >> It was an accident. >> And I've done this for 30 years. >> Yes, I >> As it looks right now, I'll just be straightforward with you the whole time. As it looks right now I think maybe you maybe didn't even realize it. I was involved in the shooting where a partner of mine shot a guy. I didn't hear gunshots and I was so far away. Okay, shot him twice. Didn't even hear the gunshots. When things happen, they happen, okay? Uh based on everything, I know we're going to find out for a fact what happened. The bullet is still in your stepfather. We're going to take that bullet ultimately and match it with whoever the suspect's gun is. >> Okay. >> If it's yours and you accidentally tripped, then it's yours and you accidentally tripped. If it's somebody over there and we match it with theirs, that's what's going to happen. I'm telling you 100% we are going to figure it out. >> Okay. >> You You secure this. Let me take him. I'll take him back to mom. >> You want to take Okay. >> Yeah. Yeah, that's fine. >> That's probably a better spot. >> Yeah. >> Uh do you need anything else while you're out here? Do you have your warmer or anything like that? Your jacket? >> I needed while I was up there. >> Okay. Hey Trent, we're going to go talk to your mom. Jump in the front. >> Do you think he'll live? >> I'm going to find out right now. It's the first thing I'm going to do, okay? >> I hope it's good news. >> Yeah. >> It better not be bad news. >> We'll find out. >> It can't be bad news. >> He was in bad shape when I saw him there, so we'll find out. >> I hope it's not bad news. >> I'm going to find out. And so that's the first thing I'm going to do is find that out for you, okay? >> Before reuniting Trenton with his mother, the detective checks in on Kurt's condition. And sadly, just as her son fears, the news isn't good. With Kurt's death now official, Jennifer is told the news and that her own son is likely the one responsible. And it's only a matter of time before he sets his murderous plans for more family members into motion. >> You're the Are you the wife or his mother or boy Is he your boyfriend? >> That's my boy. >> That's That's your son. I got that. Who is he to you? >> We were That's my fiance. >> Oh, your fiance. Okay. He's not awake yet. If you would I would like to tell him this is calmer coming from me as you can see. >> [laughter] >> He's I'm I believe this is what I believe so far. We're going to find out, okay? But I believe he accidentally shot him, okay? He says he He says he hasn't shot him. But I believe so based on everything we've seen, okay? >> Even though it's clear Trenton isn't being totally honest, based on the evidence so far, the detective has no reason to believe this was anything but a terrible accident or any hint at the attempt on his step sister's life to come. But as Trenton's informed that his step dad did in fact die, the teen's reaction is strange, to say the least. >> All right, you stand up. >> Why didn't they take him? >> We're going to talk to your mom. I just found out, okay? But your your step father did pass away, okay? All right. No, just stay here. I I get it. I get it. SORRY. MA'AM? >> WHY DIDN'T THEY TAKE HIM? WHAT HAPPENED? DID MY step dad die? >> Right here, Yes. >> You guys always kill people. YOU GUYS ALWAYS DO THIS. >> THEY provided the first aid to him and the medical when they got here, okay? I walked up to him as soon as I got here [clears throat] and it and it looked like he was probably passed, but we always will work on him, okay? Your mom's right here, Trent. >> Oh, I don't believe it. Mama. >> Get up. >> Mama. No. No. Oh, no. >> As the detective leaves Jennifer to console her son, he discusses the case with his fellow detectives. And while they still believe it was an accident, inconsistencies in Trenton's story about the number of rounds soon complicate that theory. >> Yes, we have a little issue. We do have three live rounds, and that's what the magazine takes. So, uh it doesn't mean you can't put the mag in and throw a bullet in or put a bullet in and put the mag in. So, I'm going to go interview him on that real quick, but it sounded like no, he just had the three in the mag. So, whatever. >> That's it. >> That's an issue. >> [laughter] >> But because we need to we need both. We need another We need to We need to be sure. >> Yeah. >> Um anyhow, while an accidental shooting is still the working theory, there are several inconsistencies to clear up and a lot more twists and turns to come before this case is closed. [music] Because while Trenton says his magazine only holds three rounds, his explanation for what happened to the chambered one makes little sense. And when Kurt's autopsy is performed, not only is the shot found to be fired from only 8 yd away, the .350 caliber round found inside is traced back to Trenton's [music] gun. The trajectory of the bullet means that even an accidental fall is out of the question. And with no obvious vehicle or foot tracks, another shooter is soon ruled out. During a subsequent interview with police, Trenton eventually admits that he may have tripped and accidentally shot Kurt. But in the coming weeks and months, enough evidence emerges to issue a warrant for his arrest. [music] On February 12th, 10 weeks after Kurt's death, Trenton is taken into custody at his father's house. >> Hey, can I can I hug him? >> Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. There won't be no problem. Can he put the dog back in the house? Yeah. >> But it's only after he's arrested that things get really crazy. And little do police know that Trenton's arrest inadvertently puts the wheels in motion for a shocking murder-for-hire plot on the step sister whose testimony could seal his fate and put him away for life. Because after he's charged with murder and given a whopping $10,005,000 bond, he's transported to the Lenawee County Jail where his behavior with other inmates soon spurs them to spill his secrets. One of these inmates is Ryan Soto, who has a bizarre story to tell about meeting Trenton in jail. As how Trenton's disagreement with another prisoner led to an alleged threat to end the man's life and a deadly offer that soon changes everything. >> He's very, uh, you know, inquisitive. So, he wants to come over and meet the new person every time somebody comes in the the block. And so, he comes over to me and, you know, asked me what I'm in for. Uh, I asked him what he was in for and you know, at the time he said that he, you know, was in because um they said that he, you know, he had shot his uh stepfather. >> Mhm. >> And then at that time he said, you know, he he said it was an accident and that he was fighting this case and that you know, all this other stuff. On occasion Trenton and I will walk a little bit together or he'll sit down at the table and talk to me for just a minute just to say something crazy or funny and then he'll get up and, you know, walk away. But it wasn't until Chris Condit came in the block. Um and uh Trenton and Chris kind of hung out real close together for a couple days. Well, there was a guy in there named Ed and, you know, he him and him and Barry >> Mhm. >> uh Trenton were kind of they always go back and forth, you know, and he gets he gets under his skin and then, you know, Barry'll get all pissed off and then start, you know, talking [ __ ] to him or whatever. >> Okay. >> So, he says we're we're walking at some point and and I believe this one was in the afternoon >> Mhm. >> uh because there's a long period that we wait before we go to lunch. >> Mhm. >> Uh we there'd be four lunches served, you know, when we come out our cells to clean. And so, he says, you know, I'm going to kill him, dude. I'm going to kill him. Like >> Referring to >> Referring to Ed. Cuz he just pisses him off all the time, you know. And I said to him like, "Hey, you know, you should be careful with saying [ __ ] like that, you know. You remember you are in here for a murder case and that's not going to help you someday like saying all that. You know, that doesn't look good against you." >> Mhm. >> It seems Trenton made a friend in Ryan while inside, one who would look out for him when he ran his mouth off a little too much. But if Ryan's story is true, it describes an entirely different side of Trenton than we've seen so far. One more in line with the cold-blooded killer cops are beginning to suspect him of. And considering what he admits next, it all but confirms that theory. >> As we're [snorts] standing there, they Ed gets up from the table. Well, we did a lap and walked back. Now, I remember a little bit more, but um um we're standing together alone at some point cuz everybody >> Where were you going to say something? >> Barry and I Barry and I >> What was the question? >> Where where were you near or something? >> I want to say that we were near the table closest to the stairs. >> Mhm. >> And he said, "It doesn't matter anyways. Uh everybody knows that I that I didn't uh >> [clears throat] >> kill him my stepdad on accident." >> Mhm. >> And I said, "What? What are you talking about? Why do you say stuff like that, you know? Is that true?" And he's like He said, "Yeah, something about not wearing his shoes [clears throat] the special his shoes that he was supposed to wear that day so that, you know, he he could he would have a reason why he fell >> Mhm. >> or why he made it look like he fell. And, you know, then he could say that the gun went off." >> Mhm. >> And I'm like "Whoa. What are you talking about right now? You know, like you can't say [ __ ] like that if you I don't you know, just for whatever reason you're you're telling me that." >> Mhm. >> And uh he's like, "I don't care. I'm never getting out of here anyways." I said, "What were you even pissed off at him about?" And he said, "Well, you know, he kept saying stuff about my stepsister. And he was pissed off about my stepsister. >> Mhm. >> And, you know, him and my mom were getting on my [ __ ] about my stepsister because I I there's something that happened with the stepsister. I he didn't >> Mhm. He didn't really like Barry didn't really elaborate on that part of it, but >> Mhm. >> But, you know, he said that there was some incident that happened with his stepsister and, you know, him something inappropriate. And his stepdad was pissed off at him and had had, you know, checked into him about it. Went off on him about it and he was pissed off at him. >> Okay. >> And then he said, you know, I He's like, I even thought that maybe uh maybe I could tell tell them that it was the neighbor that shot him because the neighbor didn't like my stepdad either. >> Mhm. >> And, you know, and we were we were next to his land or on on his land. I don't know who he was speaking about, but he said that, you know, he thinks, you know, I I even said that that maybe the neighbor could have done it, you know, from his house, shot him from his house, you know, or something. He made some crazy story up after that. And I said, "Listen, you can't be going around telling people that." And then um then I had [clears throat] uh walked a couple more laps and I mean, it was just like festering like just, you know, it's just like in my head like, "Why did he just tell me that [ __ ] you know?" Well, fast forward a couple days, him and uh Condiff get into a fight uh because Barry keeps saying stuff about his little brother and his girlfriend sleeping with each other. Now, he doesn't even know them. So, he's just saying this [ __ ] to him, you know, which is kind of weird, you know? It's type some type of projection thing, I would say, but anyways, he uh the after they get into a fight, you know, Chris stays in the block in three block and Barry gets put into security block. >> Mhm. >> And uh me and Chris are walking, you know, I ask him if he's okay and all this and And like, he's like, "Yeah, uh I'm fine." And like he he said, "I don't know why he would he would choose to fight me. He just confessed that he shot his dad to me." Mhm. And I said, "He didn't He confessed to me, too. He told me, too." And he said, "Yeah, he told me that he, you know, it wasn't an accident that he looked he made it look like he fell and he had the gun and shot him, you know, from on the floor on the ground, you know, like like upwards so it looked like he fell on shot him on accident." >> Ryan has no reason to lie and even claims another inmate, Christopher Kundith, had the same experience with Trenton and can back up his story. But as you'll soon see, Christopher adds even more details, ones that may explain the real motive behind the far from accidental shooting and its disturbing connection to Trenton's stepsister. >> All right. So, I believe around the June 15th I would have been moved up there and uh >> What cell block? >> Cell block three. A3. >> A3. >> And um we were friendly to each other, talked to >> you know, like I said said your names? >> Trenton Berry, he was friendly. He was the first guy that came up to me in the cell block and started to give me stuff from that I would need in there like socks and deodorant and whatnot. And uh uh couple days later, probably around the 17th to the 18th, uh I believe it would have been, he went into his case and out of nowhere he was just like, "I'm here for a murder." That was the first thing he'd ever said said about it and he's like >> Where were you guys at? Uh we were in the middle of the day room. >> Okay. Was there anyone around you? >> Uh there was no inmates around us at the time. He was being kind of quiet about it and uh the first thing he's words were "I'm here for a murder and it wasn't an accident." And I was like "Well, how did all that go down?" And that's was just my generic answer to see what he would say back and he pretty much said uh there There some issues going on with his sister which he tried to sleep with her in this in she was >> Who's he trying >> Yeah, Trenton tried to sleep with her, his step sister. His step dad found out. I'm not exactly sure of his step dad's name. Uh his step dad called him out on it in front of everyone in the house and he got extremely upset about that and felt like his step father had betrayed him or something. >> Mhm. >> It seems despite Trenton claiming to love that man, there was bad blood between them for a very specific reason. Trenton had disgustingly gone after Kurt's daughter, his own step sister, and unsurprisingly this caused serious problems in the family. But instead of realizing his actions were wrong, Trenton tripled down by planning to murder them one by one until there was no one left to spill his filthy secrets. In fact, Kaylee even sent these Snapchat messages to one of her friends, where she firmly believed someone was stalking her, that it was likely Trenton, and that he was aiming to kill her next. Going on to say this in her interview with detectives. >> So, there was an incident a few years ago where Trenton and my dad were arguing. Trenton got mad. Jennifer wasn't there. I was sitting on the couch. Trenton walked out of his room with one of the guns and it was loaded and he was threatening to shoot everyone and everything because he was mad. And then my daddy had to kind of like push him back and everything and Trenton tried wrestling him, so my dad kind of had to restrain him a little bit. My dad just I don't know. He told Trenton to put the gun down and everything and he yelled at Trenton and he didn't He didn't like back down or anything. He just stood his ground right there. Like he did not move. And he was telling Trenton and he grabbed the gun out of Trenton's hand and everything and he told him to go to his room. And he has some anger issues, but it's really complicated. Like my dad I know I know my dad loves him. >> So, while Trenton is clearly no genius, it seems he's far more cunning and put much more thought into this than many assumed he was capable of. >> Basically, he got it to where he knew his stepdad was angry at him, but he convinced him to go out to this hunting blind. >> Mhm. >> And he [clears throat] told me he specifically didn't wear his shoes that were meant for hunting. >> Mhm. >> Cuz he has a special pair because something's wrong with his right foot, I believe. >> Who's he? >> Trent. >> Trenton. >> Trenton said he was supposed to wear his special shoes out hunting and he deliberately left those and wore his bad shoes. And then he said once they got out there, he let him get in front of him quite a bit and then he took one knee stance on one knee and raised a rifle and he said he shot. And after that, he pretty much said he hit the ground and he talked to him for a brief second. He didn't tell me what he spoke to him about right initially after the shooting. >> Mhm. >> And then [clears throat] he pretty much was like closed it up because the guards came in and that was what he said to me was about like mainly he didn't have his specific shoes on they were supposed to do. How his stepdad called him out prior about the stepsister incident. >> Mhm. >> And that's pretty much where he left it because the CO walked in and they were doing their rounds at the time and he just left it at that pretty much where >> While it seems Trenton told these two inmates everything, there would be even more to his confession. And as inmate Chad Marvin sits down with detectives, they learn even more about this teen's truly twisted psyche. >> Well, we were talking about guns and shooting guns and just in general firearms. >> Okay. Like >> He's a hunter, I guess. I From what I gathered in his conversation is he's a hunter and he was just bragging about how good he was with a 9 mm type rifle that he >> Mhm. >> What I got out of it was he said that that's what he used to shoot Kurt. >> Okay. Did he explain >> Well, yeah, hold on. I grew up with Kurt a little bit. I went to school in Addison. He's younger than me, but I know who he is from just partying and you know browsing, whatever. Um he yeah, he said I'm a real good shot. When I shot Kurt, I did it from one knee from the hip. >> Okay. >> That's what he said. I've heard some rumors about the crime, but I don't know anything about the crime. I just know that that's what he said to me. >> And he knelt down? >> He kind of went down and shot from the hip and said I was I'm a good shot. I shot through it. Guys, from the hip. >> That's right. >> Watch yourself. >> That's right. >> But he kind of did that. He didn't do the motion, but he he made a shot like this. So he used a rifle to so kind of he was just kind of bragging about his ability to fire a 9 mm ri- I don't even know what a 9 mm rifle is or whatever. >> use those words, 9 mm? >> He called it something else, but he said it shot a 9 mm round maybe. I don't I'm not exactly sure. I'm not no firearm >> I'm an expert. >> Right, right, right. You know what I mean? I buy and sell stuff all the time, but I don't >> But Trenton wasn't only openly bragging about killing Kurt while in jail. He was actively trying to get other members of his family killed, too, including the step-sister he allegedly tried to sleep with and despite being behind bars, he was willing to pay to make it happen. >> Did he say anything else? Did he tell you anything >> Well, he went to court one day. >> Mhm. >> Came back and was all pissy >> Mhm. >> about the whole situation, I guess, and seemed kind of weird and he was like position. I guess from what I gathered, from what he said is he had she was going to testify on him or something. >> How do you Did he tell you this directly? [clears throat] >> yeah, yeah. He but he just he doesn't he says weird he doesn't say stuff like like we're talking like all right like kind of I don't know how I would explain it, but he's like that. testify that And then that was kind of like you got to piece it together what he's talking when he's talking sometimes cuz he's kind of he's kind of weird. And then, he said stuff like, "Okay, then let That was in the morning maybe when he got out of court or whatever it was this afternoon or what Later on in the day or in the afternoon or in the evening, he said, "You're getting out soon. You're getting out soon. My mom and dad, I can get money. My mom and dad, I'll pay $5,000 if you kill him." And I'm like, "Whoa, dude." And see, he doesn't know He has no idea I even know these people. None. >> Do you think he was serious? >> I mean, listen. The way The way his eyes and the way he looks when he's serious, absolutely. I I believe if I would have said, "Hey, I I'll do it." I believe he would have I don't know that he has $5,000. >> Right. >> I highly doubt it. Maybe he does. I Maybe his family does. I highly doubt his mom and dad are going to give me money to kill somebody. I don't know what >> asked you >> But he directly said that to me. And he has a weird I I don't know. I don't You've never We were When we were around The more I was around him, the more alarmed I was about how absolutely guaranteed this guy's a psychopath. Just the way I've been in prison for 21 years. >> Okay. >> Okay? I've done a lot of time and I've been in all high levels. I've done everything you can do in the penitentiary, bad, good, and whatever. I've been around many, many murderers. And he has a definite psychopathic feel to his personality, to his way he acts, to the way he gets angry. I can understand totally what the hell the dude did. I >> The testimony Chad gives is nothing short of shocking. And while there's no hard proof that Trenton tried to hire him to kill his step-sister, his story is convincing. And it seems the detective agrees. So now that a far darker portrait of Trenton is emerging, it puts everything that's come before it in a new light. A few hours after the shooting, Trenton was brought in to be interviewed, and what detectives found out would lay the groundwork for the case to come. Although, as of now, there's no hint of the truly murderous intentions to come. But first, they discuss a long and growing list of police interactions young Trenton's had in the recent past. >> The bolt's going to match. We're going to know. Um bad news is August of 2022, domestic with him and our dad. That's bad. October, last month, another one. Little confused on that one. But it didn't sound like he was They It was like they added another one, like maybe his brother. Um but maybe that's just last month. 10 yards away, he said he says 8 to 10 yards. Here's the shot, dad goes down, dad says I've been shot. Um when I got there, I touched him and So, we uh Uh he has an orange jacket just like I mean, I'm sorry, he has orange on. Blaze, they call it blaze orange. Blaze orange like that. They heard heard us. Yes. >> They think he was wearing a sweatshirt like cuz he's old age sweatshirt just like this. >> Okay. And that's starting to look cuz it looks like the material or whatever. In the bank, you know, it is a very small. >> What what did it hit? >> I will attend the autopsy most likely tomorrow, and we will find out that point. That's what happens. The doctor will look We will check him out. Sometimes they do an X-ray first to see if the bullet's there or whatever, sometimes. Almost doesn't matter too much cuz it will still do the same We the doctors will do the stuff and look. I will collect that bullet. And then we'll compare it, you know, to anything that we come up with. The resources we did utilize, so the DNR showing up, I showed up, I had a deputy showed up. I had another DNR detective show up. We flew our drone, we had a drone come out. What that's doing is checking for hunters in the area, it's checking for tire impressions, it's checking for footprints of anybody that might have been hunting. >> At this point in the investigation, authorities had no knowledge of Trenton's truly violent tendencies. And while they were all but certain it was him who fired the shot, the idea he did it intentionally was hardly being considered. In fact, considering the circumstances, they thought Trenton acted as well as he could under the pressure of a stressful situation, one that he himself had orchestrated from the start. >> You do need to be proud of him. Literally, I haven't seen his dolls do in my life like he did the driving you and >> Which is part of the doll >> I stole his corn stalks. >> See man, look Kurt was dad, but we don't do the step thing, man. He They have two moms, two dads. You know, we we co-parent. I don't know what I'm saying. You you've seen me and dad You you know who I am. We we Awesome. You know what? >> We're We're >> So like we're Yeah, we don't do Kurt was That was my buddy, man. >> But but but you're not a you're not a hunter at >> No. No. I don't I'm a city kid, man. >> He teaches the kids. >> You're happy that Trenton hunts and you just >> I teach him the fish. Kurt teaches him the hunt, bud. >> That's my thing. I I That's my buddy, man. >> But but that was awesome. And it's freaking weird, man, the way he like, you know, he's with my ex-wife the mother of my kids. And you know, it ain't always peaches and cream, but the way we get along but it's it's crazy, dude. It's like losing a brother. >> So here's the thing, so I actually spent shell casing if that's the case. If if you know, he accidentally shot if you know, that happened. I would but if you if you accidentally if you accidentally tripped, you know, anything like that. If you didn't shoot, great. We We're going to be looking at that, too. That's why That's why I had the flown drone fly further away. Um there are a few things that just don't you know, as far as the greatest clue is, I mean, maybe maybe you made an accident. A few things, you know, that we see. Looks like that's the case. Um but again, open mind. We'll keep on checking our stuff. If the K9 finds us that shell casing, even if they don't find it, doesn't mean a >> casing on the body. >> But yes, then I'll just terminate So, he knows already that there's not a shot casing in the body. Yes, blood right in like I know as I'm just trying to make sure you're So, this is this is a slugger bullets what they're called. With that being said, if if exactly what you said in three rounds and there's sometimes a mistake sometimes like you rack a gun and a bullet doesn't come out. It doesn't catch it the retractor doesn't catch the brass and pull it out. So, I thought you don't know that so you don't know if it's not if you don't know you don't know it. >> I always make sure it is so that's why I always clean my gun and make >> Which is good and then pointing in safe direction all that stuff is good. That's all good info that's awesome. I'm glad you do that. But we we're the police and we have accidents. We have We had a guy shoot a round in a floor at our play. I mean it's accidents happen. Um that's obviously why we didn't tackle you or anything like that. You're all cooperative so there's no reason for anything like that. You've been really good. Um so, we're going to look at that. They will >> There was no quarrels, no beefs so I mean >> Uh that I have a little bit of an when I'm on scene my dispatch calls me says hey I got some information. We're going to look at that and I'm I'm going to get to that. >> [snorts] >> Uh I guess the last year 2022 you and him got into an argument is what's reported. And I'll look at it if it's wrong it's wrong but I just want to point >> I was upset. >> Did you call the police? >> Yeah, I was upset. >> Yeah, I showed up. I was there. >> Okay. >> I I was up >> There's that one October of this year which is last month they told me something else. Are you Do you Do you know Do you know Do you know either of these two? >> I didn't call him. >> Who called last month? >> I could be wrong but I'm almost positive that's that's what it >> wasn't him. That my little brother >> Yes, yes and then they said something but but also but what weren't you at least there? >> Yeah, but when they called >> Now that the conversation's gone from praising Trenton to bringing up his difficult past with Kurt. It seems he feels the need to defend himself, and playing the victim is a tactic he seems most comfortable with, including a self-diagnosis of PTSD from an unlikely source. >> Oh, I forgot to tell you, Detective, I do have PTSD. >> From what? From the foot, yeah? >> Yeah. >> He showed me his foot. That looked pretty bad. >> surprised that I didn't shoot a firearm at him. I got PTSD because not too many people can do that. >> Yeah. In August, what August of last year, what was your guys' you and Kurt's argument back in August of last year? What was that argument about? >> I can't remember. It It was probably over something stupid. >> Probably because you didn't want I don't know. I think it was because you >> [clears throat] >> and you thought that you were going to be the boss in the house. >> Yeah, that might have been what was it. >> Yeah, he thought he was going to be the >> Over something stupid. >> Over something stupid. >> Um Trenton's going to be the boss. >> Yeah. >> That wouldn't go over well with me. If you're my kid, I don't have any kids, but if you're my kid and you're a boss, would you not going to talk a little bit? >> I think we all I think it was I think it was about the clean your room cuz it only took you a year to clean your room. >> Did that get Was it verbal? Uh just arguing verbally or did Dad push Did he push you or you pushed Dad at that point or what? >> I mean >> Little >> This one literally stood up with something like, "I'm out of here." >> Nope. >> So he was testing testing the waters. >> And but then you you didn't go, and nor did you. >> No. >> When was the last time you argued with your stepdad? Did you guys argue today at all yet or no? >> No. No. >> No, I actually can't remember. >> No, we probably that August incident. >> You work for him? Doing mowing? >> Yeah. Once Once in a blue moon. >> Okay. >> But >> So I'm sorry. I cut you off. So when roughly was the last time you guys already you can think? >> Probably Well, like she said cuz after that me and him I'm telling you now, man. If >> [snorts and clears throat] >> we were like two peas in a pod. >> I can tell you I can tell everybody right now, all three of you, I am very con- well, I'm very convinced that if if Trent accidentally shot him, you know, as far as not being on purpose or something like that, yeah, arguments, everybody argues or whatever, but there's no >> No, they couldn't argue. Actually, that was kind of exciting we were talking about this. >> Oh, I'm sure you were. I am very convinced that [snorts] I will find out what happened, okay? So, that I want to tell you, I'm extremely convinced. Just knowing evidence-wise and how it how it occurs and what occurs, um I can tell you, you know, we have the other ammunition type thing. If he if Trent accidentally shot him, we're going to we're going to know that. Um 100% the rifling, you know, of the gun is 100% going to show us if he accidentally shot him. Uh something else that happens is a distance. Nobody else, footprint-wise, was in that instant field right there. There's three fields kind of close. Nobody else There's no other tracks when I show up. It's us creating tracks. Um so, I'm confident Well, I'm Well, I'm No, it's but I'm confident nobody's within uh 400 yd of where this occurred. That doesn't mean uh my .350 will go 600 yd, okay? But nobody was within 400 yd, okay? Um One of the things makes me think maybe he accidentally, whether again, I'm a cop doing police stuff. Gun got shot, didn't even know it. And I'm 10 ft away watching everything. So, sometimes things happen and the mind [snorts] blocks it out or I saw a taser so my mind thinks okay he just tased him. When he saw he actually got shot but um so within 400 yards nobody else was right there. Um we you know when I asked him Trent was great angle wise so the gun shot should be what we call it from the west is what it should be. When I read that it's probably saying me I have to do if there's um >> You know the guy he has beef with them? >> If >> Yeah and what are you looking at? What are you looking at? What are you looking at there? >> solitary Maybe a solitary thing also is the gun shot. >> Uh thank you I'll be there. Um so it's going to it's going to show you know that so if if he thinks it's a distance it's going to show up. One thing that does look like maybe it was an accident close by is because of that what we call burning or the gray black around it's on orange on the jacket. From a distance you know again that should should be burned up but again I'm not a professional somebody else will be able to determine that. The easiest one is going to be to be honest with you is the slug. What I want to do hopefully it makes my job a little harder but hopefully um we match it up and they say absolutely not you know it didn't come from that from his gun. That would be I don't say great makes my job harder cuz I still need to find out who for me easier is if Trent accidentally did it. I mean that's a straight forward it's not good for any of you. Um but I'm just saying otherwise don't get me wrong we're going to hunt them down people. We will do what we call a a GPS uh for phones that are near. Doesn't mean somebody always has their phone with them but we're going to do it if that's the case. Um but just with the things we've seen and seen and again so we we have the dogs out there. >> [snorts] >> They find this special casing Trent already told me he has not fired you know the gun today. They did not see it. >> And I'm not And I'm saying you did. Uh >> And of course I think he would have said I accidentally shot my dad. >> I really do. I really do. I really do think he would have. >> Yeah. Uh so it's been that. Yeah. >> I'd do anything for that man. >> Well, I don't dispute that whatsoever. >> When Trenton says he loved that man to death, the cruel irony of the phrase appears to be lost on him. But as it becomes increasingly clear to everyone in the room, the only person who could have possibly fired the fatal shot was Trenton. And after enjoying a nice pizza, even he comes to this inevitable realization. >> Um but that's this is what I want to do. I just wanted to give you that opportunity that hey, you know, I'm a man and a son. >> I >> I yes, I accidentally did And that's that's it. That's that. Cuz I have to give a recommendation. This is all said and done. >> I can't remember. >> Why do you think that is? Any idea? >> Cuz when I usually don't take my meds my mind tricks with me. >> That's another That's another reason. >> My mind tricks with me. >> If you don't remember that and if that's what it was you didn't have your meds today then that's that. If you [snorts] now think some that is what happened, [clears throat] you know, we'll deal with it. You're not going with us today. >> Well, you I want you to speak the truth. >> And I'm telling you right now to your face if you accidentally did it you're not going with me today. We're going to go back home. We're going to address that. I was already told this anyhow while we're at that. I asked Mom already uh fires all the guns. Um my number one thing at this point is I I've seen you get upset. I understand. I'd be upset [clears throat] as well. Um I want to make sure you're fine. Are Are you thinking about hurting yourself? Okay. >> So what? >> So it's a question I I have to ask you. >> I probably could have tripped. >> Okay. All right. >> I probably could have tripped. >> Okay. >> And then >> then did it go on and go off at that point? >> If it did just >> Just speak the truth. Don't say anything that's not >> can't remember if I did or not, but I think I did trip. >> Okay. So, within a matter of hours, Trenton's story has drastically changed. First, a neighborhood sniper with a beef was the one to blame, but now Trenton admits that maybe, just maybe, he tripped and accidentally shot his own stepdad. Of course, thanks to some jailhouse good Samaritans, detectives eventually learn the truth. Trenton isn't only a cold-blooded killer, he very well may be a psychopath. And if he'd had it his way, his stepsister would have been next on his kill list. Trenton Berry eventually pled no contest to the second-degree murder of his stepfather, Kurt Stebbins, but after additional information came to light, including the jailhouse informant's interviews, he decided to accept a plea deal. He was sentenced to 12 to 50 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in February of 2036.
