Mama got gun guys. >> And what kind of guns do you like? >> I like all kinds of guns. >> Told you I like the >> Meet Erica Valdez, a wife flirting with cops just moments after killing her husband. >> I got a call from my daughter at like 1 the next day saying that I killed her dad. And I'm like, what are you talking about? >> And in the face of a mountain of evidence stacked against her, Erica will try to seduce, lie, and manipulate her way out of the murder of Joel Valdez. completely unaware that her life is over. >> Let me be Let me go be that foul. >> Not using that. >> I have though. [laughter] >> He's threatened to light my house on fire with my children in it. He's sick. And then would be like, "Please, mom, don't go to work. Don't leave me with dad." Just shy of midnight on July 4th, 2023, police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, received a flurry of panicked calls regarding a shooting on Andrews Avenue, a residential street full of families. When police arrived, they discovered Joel Valdez, a tattoo artist and father of four barely clinging to life after getting shot behind the wheel of his vehicle. Surrounding him, making the scene even more heartbreaking, were his teenage daughters. Through sobs and tears, they told police that their mother, Erica Valdez, had shot their dad's house up, then chased after him, delivering the fatal blow to him as he tried to speed away in his vehicle. Naturally, when police took Erica in for questioning, she denied any involvement or knowledge of the murder. Instead, she decided to confide in the detectives about what a lousy, violent husband she had, despite her own daughter's claims that, well, he wasn't the one committing any murders that night. The following footage has kindly been provided to us by the Albuquerque Police Department. >> Hello, Eric. >> I know. Is it an inferno? a brand new facility. And I walk in here and I even even in short, >> oh, is it cooler over here? >> Oh my god. >> Given her actions, she might want to get used to warm places because as far as I know, they don't have AC where she's going. Police lead her into the interrogation room where she has read her Miranda rights. >> With that your understanding of those four, that's the reason we're going through. Would you like to talk to me while you're here? Um, well, like I want to know what I mean. >> Well, yeah. And I would really I want to give that to you, but we have to have like if I were to throw out something as simple as a question and then it is prepared that you weren't allowed to make that final statement that you didn't want to talk. >> So, it's really up to you. >> I like um >> Well, all you think about it, what's going on with your son? >> My son is in county. He's been there for four months. What's your son's name? >> Josiah. [snorts] >> Last name is Valdez. I don't mean to be rude, but we do have a lot of mixed families. >> No, it's we're all the same. We're all >> I've been married for 21 years. >> Okay. >> All my kids are Valdez. Yes. >> Vald. >> Um, but he's in there. I don't know. Somebody said he had a ski mask and he shot somebody and they know him by the color of his eyes. So, >> that's what they said. >> Mhm. >> Ooh. So, he has an attorney now. I mean, well, >> you >> Yeah, I got him an attorney. So, I don't know. >> Okay. >> I mean, we've been It's It's been raining. I've been domestic wise. So, here's the thing. Erica and Joel had been together for 21 years, though it seems that for the better part of those two decades, it was a pretty unhappy marriage. For starters, despite the fact that they've been together since 2002, in 2006, Erica filed a paternity suit against another man, claiming he was the biological father of her infant child, which doesn't really bode well for a happy relationship. with that. Since you're willing to talk to me, I kind of I I've been hearing about your difficulties. Um, having been through a divorce myself, I know it's the the hardest things for anyone to ever try to understand unless you're in a relationship. I can never explain to anybody about how bad mine was. >> So, I would like to know more about what is just going on. So, >> well, um, I've been having domestics forever. I call the cops all the time. He takes off and leaves. He, you know, he just he splits my ear. He doesn't run to the kids. I wish I asked if they could have bre if they could have brought my phone cuz everything is in my phone. He's threatened to light my house on fire with my children in it. Um he's sick. He's Yeah. To me, I think he's on his things that he was back in the day when we first met, which is the ice when I am home. I haven't been home in 3 weeks. It's to get clothes and to make sure my house is okay and not being ran down by a bunch of, you know, weird people. >> Yeah. >> Because at the end of the day, that's still my kids home. Um, I've been asking him to leave. My dad cosigned for the house for me and him. Well, for us, um, he told me he would have to kill me and my dad to keep the house. He like, he's just sick, you know. He punched me in the face. Fourth of July first. He went to a hotel with some girl, was waving a gun, wanting to fight everybody down there. He took off. I was like, "Yes, this is a time I can go home and grab my clothes for my kids and me and you know, he won't nobody will be there." I pull up and him and her are inside my house and I knock and he comes out and he's like, "Get out of my get out of here." And at this point, I have two little girls that I like. I like helped raised them. They're like little kids in my neighborhood. They're my daughter's age. >> I was like, "Just go with me. That way somebody's with me." Well, he punched me in the face. The little girl stands in front of him and says, "You're not going to hit her." I said, "Get in the car and let's just go." I got in my car and left. And I don't know what happened from there. I don't know if the girl stayed there. I don't know if she I don't know. And then I got a call from my daughter at like 1 the next day saying that I killed her dad. And I'm like, "What are you talking about?" Like, you know, if I would have done that, I would have done it when I was black and blue and bleeding in front of you guys. And my at the time 15-year-old was standing in front of him for him not to hit me, >> you know? Like I That's [clears throat] nonsense. I I've stuck with my family for 21 years to keep a family, not to have a separated family, you know? >> I'm like I was raised with my mom and dad and that's what all I've ever wanted for my kids was to have their mom and dad. I >> Yeah, that sounds rough. That sounds really rough. >> You know what else? It sounds like a whole truckload of BS. To be clear, Erica and Joel were having domestic incidents, and Erica was calling the police constantly, but she was actually facing charges because of that. Between January and early April of 2023, she called 911 27 times on her husband. In every case, police responded to the home. In 16 of them, Erica locked the doors and pulled the shades, pretending that she wasn't home or simply refused to answer the door or phone, [music] despite there not being any violence taking place inside. We aren't saying Joel never put his hands on Erica. We are saying, however, that it was undeniably a two-way street, as the hotel incident makes clear here. Erica claims that her husband showed up with his mistress at a hotel Erica was staying at, then pulled a gun on her trying to instigate a fight. As you'll soon see, Joel wasn't the one to pull a gun. And while she tries to paint Joel as a cheater here, he wasn't the only one. >> Do you like any really draw this much motion? It's physical. >> You sure you don't want to? [snorts] rush. >> I'm like, and that same day before the fourth, I'm like, if you guys would like to bring my phone, you guys could have seen me. He sent me pictures of revolvers like driving my life like sick [snorts] and like my poor son didn't he'll even say I don't I didn't even have a home. My husband always tried to fight him and but I stayed on because I I do want my kids to see that the domestics, you know, like I I wasn't raised in a domestic home and I didn't want them to. like I just work and sleep on the people's house that I do stay at my age cuz my daughter is like I don't even know for all I know about she probably she probably I don't even I don't even know >> [sighs] [snorts] >> like he just split my hair not that long ago like like and then he just starts [ __ ] with everybody. I just I I started working like 3 months ago just because I'm like, you know, I can't do this. He doesn't want to work. I told him I have to grab your and go to work cuz you don't want to grab your own, you know. [snorts] Started working. He went to my work. He started like trying to fight two of the guys that I work with. He got 86 because he thinks that I'm like like he's he's he just starts to [ __ ] with everybody. And I tell him, "Dude, we have our kids in the car. People carry guns. They're not afraid to use them either, you know? Like he's sick." So he just thought every guy in your life you were sleeping with them. >> Everybody in their >> He said he was going to kill my mom and dad like the people that open up [sighs and gasps] your family. Wow. >> [sighs and gasps] >> And I have like all of the messages and I have like cuz every time like normally like I we used to fight. I'm like I'm not going to I'm not going to let you get hit me and me not hit you back. It's just a reaction, you know? So [snorts] we used to fight and now I'm just like I'm not going to fight you and I'm just not going to support him and everything. And if you guys hear like the [ __ ] he's like Yeah. I know you said you had two kids with you earlier. I don't know if I really want to talk to him. I'd like to have their names, [snorts] but >> my daughter stood in front of me and punching me. My son stood in front of him trying to punch me. And then he tries to fight my son. And then my son's like, I got And then I tell my son, just leave me please cuz you know how your dad's going to get. Oh, your dad's going to [ __ ] crazy. And he's like, I can't see. I would never see nobody fight their parent like not not in front of me or my [ __ ] my family is way too strong. I don't I'm 37 and I've never disrespected my mother. You don't even know your son. You said when was he arrested? How long how long's this been going on? Oh, I've been trying to go I've been trying to go through this divorce for like >> like two years now. >> I had I had a restraining order on him and he got out was like I promise I'm changing blah blah. [snorts] So like I just kept the restraining order inside like my drawer in my room. >> And she always never served with it. No, cuz I was supposed to go downtown and do it and then I I'm like I felt bad because you know he's my husband and he doesn't have anything. I'm like no no no. >> You said your daughter. I didn't know I had your daughter. >> I have two daughters. >> You have two daughters. >> She How old was she when she saw you getting abused? Well, my my my 15-year-old at the time would stand in front of him [snorts] like literally like you're bal 15y old. >> She's 16 now. >> She's 16 now. >> Yeah. >> But she was 15 when he >> Oh, she's been she was like 14 when it started like really being aggressive and old would be like please mom don't go to work. Don't leave me don't leave me for that. [snorts] and a three-year-old too. Would he abuse her in front of her? >> Oh, yeah. >> Okay. >> Well, that's right. I stopped right once more. Erica wants to paint the violence in the home as a one-way street. But according to neighbors and family members, that wasn't the case. Erica and Joel got into frequent screaming matches, called the cops on one another, and got their children involved in their drama repeatedly. The real victim of it all, her children, including a three-year-old who had no choice but to be stuck between their parents' altercations. If Erica was really concerned about her children as she claimed, she wouldn't have put them in the positions that she constantly did. And she certainly wouldn't have shot their father, leaving him in his car dead for them to find and be traumatized by. >> You made a mention though, and I'm going to regret kind of some of the stuff, so I make sure I'm on the same level that you are. Okay. Um you you said that you went you um you went to the house to get some clothes and that you had the two girls with you. >> No, I had my daughter's friends with me. >> Yeah. Your daughter's friends with >> Yeah. That on the next block so they see them outside cuz every fireworks and I was like, "Hey, I need you to go with me." I was like, "I'm going to go and get some clothes." I was like, "I don't know." Joel pulled up at the hotel with some chick with him. I was like, I just want somebody to go with me to make sure like nothing happens, you know, and they're like, okay. So, they got in the car and they went with me and then um the door was locked. So, I like ran my engine to my car and then he he came out [snorts] and I'm like, "You better get her out of Oh, sure. Like, I'm not even playing with you. Like, I I never disrespected you. I never I'm like that's you know and he put me what are you going to what are you going to do then he like me in my ear and then my daughter's friend stood in front of him and was like don't hit her again like you better not and I was like you know guys he's not even worth it then he's getting the car let's go and then I took him home and I went to my mom's and then from my mom's I went and stayed at a friend's house that's [snorts] I slept at like everywhere where I have been stained and water that I just like the most. Okay. Wow. He he messed up your car. >> Yeah. My car. He throw his fireball cuz he he drinks he drinks every day. like he he from the minute he wakes up to the minute he would go to bed or he didn't go to bed should I say morning shoot >> okay [snorts] so he threw fireball on it was okay >> at the driver's side >> are we talking >> No I'm talking the fifth >> we're talking the fifth we're talking a good sign okay >> yeah and he kicked my car he was trying to punch me but I rolled up the window cuz I'm like miss me with it you He better get my car. I've already know he kicked my car. He tried to punch me is what he tried to do and I rolled up the window and then that's when he threw the fireball cuz it made him mad. >> So fireball kicked your car >> and tried punching him. >> He's sick. >> Okay. >> He did punch me while I was out of the car, but when I got in, he couldn't do it. >> Were you in the driver's seat? >> I was in the driver's seat. Okay. Driving. Okay. Um, with that statement there, you said you were out of the car. Were you out of the car this time? >> No. So, when I drove up the very first time, when I seen that girl's car, there is when I got down and I knocked. Remember? >> Okay. Oh, that's right. You said you got knocked. >> Yeah. Cuz you were there. >> And that's when he hit me. Yes. That punched me. And the little girl stood in front and was like, "You're not going to hit her." And I was like, "That's just so cool." I'm like, "He's not going to ruin the end of our night, the rest of our night, whatever we have. Stay by my car with us." And then and then that's when he tried to that's when he threw the fireballs where we were leaving me and the girls. I told him to get in the car. >> Okay. I'm going to test cuz you are you Puerto Ricans. >> I am Puerto Rican. >> Yeah. Cuz I can remember talking with some Puerto Rican people, man. I know you have to. >> So you knocked on the door, he came out >> and I told him >> and that's when he started fighting you in front of which girl was it or >> both cuz I had both of them. They're sisters outside in the car. >> They were outside of the car. >> Okay. >> Cuz I'm like I don't [clears throat] know how many other girls are in my house with this chick, you know? I'm like, I am going to get beat [snorts] up alone. [laughter] >> Like I mean I can have on my own, but I'm just like I'd rather I I would rather have had somebody there that's able to see him. You know, >> for the record, the someone that she wanted to have with her were two teenagers, a 16-year-old and 18-year-old friend of the family. Erica is 40 years old, insisting on traumatizing two teenagers because of her own jealousy and anger towards her husband. So, okay. So, [snorts] we'll digest that a little more. So, he literally came >> How How did he come at you? I mean, you're outside. You said the girls are with you. >> Um, >> no, he'll he just walk. He doesn't know you. >> Oh, really? >> If he doesn't know you, he would have locked me up right in front of you. >> Really? >> Yeah. He's sick. He's that sick in his head. Yeah. >> Okay. >> I'm telling you, I gave him my divorce papers like four times and I He said, "Fill them out. You ain't going to fill them out." I filled them all out. I said, "All you have to do is sign off." And he said, "Yeah, go pay a detective to find me, and that's if they find me." >> Okay. >> And I'm like, "Whatever." You know, >> so he would >> just like you said earlier, your earlier work, he blamed all the men, but he felt so much that he would just hit you. >> Yeah. He didn't care. >> Did he hit any of the girls? >> Go. No. >> No. >> No. Oh, no. [gasps] Yeah. It [snorts] would have been No. I just made him get in the car and we left at that point cuz I'm like I cannot do this. But if you go to my work and you ask Jes will tell you he went in there and he was talking [ __ ] and my coworker was giving my three-year-old ice cream and it was funny cuz I made a comment. I said my baby daddy's not used to me working, you know. I said I've raised these kids. So he's like he has a baby watching her for one day and he couldn't handle her. So Jes gave her an ice cream and then it kind of giggled was it's hard being a dad. Huh? And he's all got hazy with him. They 86 him from my work. [snorts] Like he's he he has mental issues. >> That sounds like it. >> My mom fell in with guns all the time. He's he's he my mom even says he you need to get out before he kills you. And if he just wants material [ __ ] let him keep my mom and dad said, "Mom, he He's not. He [snorts] was and was always blaming me. So, whatever. >> What was he saying to you when these girls are trying to like stop? >> He was anything and everything he was saying to me cuz I was telling him to get that dick out of my house. Like, you know, I'm like, just get her out of my house. That's all you got to do. Like, you have to leave. >> And it wasn't even the principal. I didn't even give I don't even care that he was with her. I'm like cuz I two years and I wasn't counting on it either, you know? Like I stay gone. Literally, I don't go home. I have to literally find places just because I'm like I can't to look at him. The way he the way he acts, the way he talks, the way he just I'm like I Yeah. I I don't feel comfortable around him. >> Kind of the pot calling the kettle black there, isn't it? And those don't exactly sound like the words of someone who doesn't care that their husband is seeing another woman when in reality she shouldn't have cared because both of them according to their daughters were seeing other people. The night of July 4th, Erica was staying at a Motel 6 super romantic with her boyfriend James Sa. Her husband Joel was with his alleged girlfriend Rian who was also allegedly an ex of Erica's new man. Confusing? Sure. But what's more confusing is why Erica and Joel even bothered with each other when they were both allegedly seeing other people. On the call to 911 reporting the argument between Erica and Joel at their marital home, Erica could be heard in the background screaming, "You better get that female out of the house before I shoot her." This was just hours after Joel caught her in a hotel with James, who she refers to as her boy toy, on and off. So you knew she that Rihanna was in your house? >> Yeah, cuz Rihanna and my baby daddy pulled up to the hotel that me and my friends were at [snorts] and my baby daddy got out with a gun telling some dude what's up downstairs. That's how it all happened. So at the beginning of the whole thing that morning took and I guess the guy that was in the hotel that I wasn't even I talked to him once is her ex dude. Okay. >> So, she took my baby daddy to the hotel that we were at and my baby daddy got out and was like waving at him and telling him to come downstairs and I'm like, Joel, get like you better get out of here. That's that's what I was telling you in the beginning. And then they left from there and go home. my phone or in my driveway and I knocked on the door and he didn't open for [snorts] a minute and then he came out and that's when like it just >> So Joel got out of the car with a gun. >> Yeah. At the hotel telling like telling the guy James Rihanna's ex or the guy that I was sorry to say but telling him to come downstairs and I'm like why does he need to go downstairs? like he nobody wants like we're not even together. Why why would you want to fight somebody that I'm not even with or nothing, [snorts] you know? Like I need to find myself. He made me lose myself for the last four years and I have to find myself, you know? I'm not worried about anybody else right now besides my kids. And I take them to the zoo. Like they're they've been everywhere with me. >> Okay. He total my son's car while my son was in jail on a DWI and left it there and he shouldn't even be driving. Like my baby daddy. [snorts] My son said, "Mom, sell the car, please. I'll put whatever money you get for it, put it to a lawyer." Yep. Get a phone call at 10:00 for my 16-year-old dad needs help. I'm all for what now? And I used to jump and say how high and where. And I said, "Nope, I'm not going." Figure out what you're going to do. >> The thing about motel is they may not have comfy beds or safety or working locks, but you know what? They do have cameras everywhere. And those cameras did indeed capture Joel approaching Erica's motel door with his girlfriend in tow. They had a verbal altercation. And then Erica and her boyfriend pulled a gun on them. As Joel and his lady split, the camera caught multiple flashes of gunshots trailing behind their fleeing car. So, while she wants to claim that Joel pulled a gun on her, the reality is the opposite. And the motel's got the receipts to prove it. However, despite having a recently murdered husband and a boyfriend, Erica's decided she's not done. They're still flirting to do. >> What kind of guns do you like? I like all kinds of guns. >> You like all kinds of >> I just like I just >> I like um >> I like CZs. >> I like >> I know the checklist, but I love CS. >> I like four I like Glocks. Glocks are my favorite, but I like four fives. I like nines. Um I like ARs for sure. >> Okay. >> Um I like I like 40s. And I 45 and 40s for sure. >> What is it about the 45 40 like >> I don't know. I just I just like compact. >> Yeah. I I used to be a 45 guy until I actually became a cop and I saw what 9 mm could do. >> I was just like, "Oh my lord." I mean, these things, >> what do they do? >> Oh, just the velocity. I've had calls where a 9 millimeters hit the trunk of a Toyota Camry through the entire car and it stopped when it had enough fabric from a loose shirt after it went through somebody spun to a >> stop. But maybe I always want to ask him because I kind of I switched. Sorry. I used to be the 45 and a good old 191 and 45, >> but I switched to a nine. >> I like 57s though, too. >> You like the 57? >> Okay. >> Oh, the Oh, the one. They started off. Oh, no. They started with a P9. Oh, Ruber started it. >> Ruger. >> Oh, 57. The Ruber >> 57. >> Yeah. So nice. They're just like little mini tablets. >> Oh, yeah. >> They're cool. >> Oh, yeah. Those are amazing. I I mean, I wish >> I just wish I could. >> Oh, you get to enjoy guns. >> I don't I don't get to enjoy them now, >> but I love them. >> When did you get introduced to him? When you were a kid? >> My grandpa is an ex. >> Oh, that's I'm sorry. >> I'm a military brat. My dad is My dad was in the military. Yes. That's why New York, you know, and they brought me to crazy Albuquerque. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And I can have guns. I just I I choose not to just cuz, you know, my sons and circumstances and my baby daddy's a family and that's like I don't you I don't mean to be rude. I'm not going to try to make up that. How long has he been a fellow? >> Oh, he's been I met him in YC. He was in the boy school. >> I've been with him since we were just about to be 17 years old. >> Okay. >> Yeah, we've been together for a very long time. That's why I said I think I've held my family alone together for a long time. >> Okay. So, you haven't had I I consider it a right because I love guns. A gun around your house since how long now? >> Since my son got >> When did he get Oh, so you were able to enjoy guns up to this point? >> I had matter of fact, I need to call a detective and see if >> I had a 40etective. the detective that picked up my son. >> When did your son get picked up? Let's Let's look. >> Three months ago. >> Okay. 3 months. >> So, what are we now? >> Okay. >> What are we? >> Um, we are July. >> Okay. April 17th, I think my son got picked up. >> Okay. And then the whole I I do remember [clears throat] that cuz the whole Skax people. Yeah, fully understanding me taking some calls, >> but I have but I haven't already my domestics and my divorce. So, I'm like, you know what? I need this cuz I I I can't I can't go home. I might I I was tired of my kids seeing everything. you know, my baby would be like my my daddy hit something like this, you know, and she'll she'll she'll show you like, you know, and that to me, I'm like I wasn't raised like that. And I didn't raise my, you know, are my 16 to be in that type thing, you know. >> Yeah. >> So, when they took those guns, they ended up taking your gun. >> Yeah. >> Okay. How many guns did they take? >> Two. They took two. So, one of them was yours. >> Yeah. >> And the other one they took. Um, [snorts] >> yeah, I already talked to the detective, but I don't know about now. I don't know why like I should still be able to >> imagine being in jail for murdering your spouse and being concerned about getting your gun back. Though she says she didn't raise her kids to be around that, the endless 911 calls prove otherwise. You know what else proves otherwise? the violent crimes that her son was in custody for at the time of this interrogation, including aggravated assault, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and fleeing law enforcement. >> I don't have a record. I never had I am I am as clean as a whistle. >> Yeah, it's it's it's difficult when you look out like kind of out of blue is all there. Never been a part of this kind of environment. >> Not even close to none of this have I ever been. And it, you know, it's like I'm put my hands on my own like >> Yeah. >> Get out of my car and walk like I get out and walk normal. They're like, "No, turn around. I'm You guys have to bear with me. I am not a criminal. [clears throat] I know. I know. >> Okay. So, you love the guns. Any other guns that you like? Do you like rifles? >> I do, but if I'm like hunting and I haven't met a guy that likes to go hunting yet, >> so maybe one day. >> You like that? >> Maybe one day. >> You ever hunt one before he got >> Oh, he's never been able to help. I met him in YDC. He was a juvenile. He was He went in as >> well. Sometimes juvenile his involvement there. I didn't know. >> So, he was never able to. He just kept on kind of reoccurring. kind of goes with his personality. He kind of just stays in that mental state of want to fight. >> Okay. [snorts] >> I wish he would have been the one in jail and my son be out cuz you know that's where he needs like that's where he that's where he normally goes when he starts to act like and I every time he acts like that I know he know >> I know it. I know. I've been with him for 20 years. >> Yeah. >> Like it's he he turns sick. He turns crazy. He thinks people are in the house. Like he's he's >> done twisted his marbles. I lost them in prison if he didn't get them back. But it's not for me. >> No, it's it's it is sad cuz you know what? That's why I'm saying I'm like I stuck around and how my family cuz I want my kids to be a mom and a dad. Like I just my kids everybody hated my son and they still hate and they hate my daughter. You going to go cry to mommy and daddy here? Are you going to go come on that hand your car? My daughter's going to go fight. And I sure I made her get out the car. And then I go to work and then I get off work and I either pick them up or sometimes they stay. Most of the time they've been staying there cuz I don't want to go home and I don't want to have them sleep in the car with me if I have to sleep in the car, you know. >> Yeah. Their investigation was full of witness testimony, claiming that Erica went to the home after she had already pulled a gun on her husband and his girlfriend at the motel. And there she shot up the house and delivered the fatal blow. Footage from the neighborhood shows her car fleeing. And her own words, a text to a relative saying, "I sprayed the house." Ultimately led to a trial where she didn't put up much of a fight. Erica ultimately pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder which carries a potential for 25 years behind bars. As of the publishing of this video, her sentence has not been passed down. Thankfully, we do know that her underage children are in the care of paternal relatives where we hope that they are getting the love, care, and nurturing that they deserve.
