He is armed and dangerous, he's already shot three people in a silver or gray older Toyota pickup. >> He's going to wipe out head-on. Oh my goodness. Oh, he's going to wreck. I think he's wrecked. Call for ambulance. Call for ambulance. Hurry up. >> Tearing through northern New Mexico, police are currently on the hunt for 21-year-old Damien Herrera. Damien is on the run after murdering his own family. >> Who's Damien? >> HE'S MY [laughter] BROTHER THAT SHOT THEM. >> WHO IS THERE, MA'AM? DO WE HAVE MEDICS? >> THEY'RE MY MOM. Damien has shot them. >> On this day, however, something has ignited inside him. With a 200-mile blockade ensuing, Damien will continue taking victim [music] after victim. >> Yeah, you guys got to turn around, all right? It's going to be about 6 hours. >> Okay, we got another person shot in Rio Arriba. >> Another person shot in Rio Arriba? Are you kidding me? >> No, I'm not kidding you. >> As law enforcement races across an entire state to stop him before he takes any more. >> Sheriff's office, let me see your hands. >> Don't shoot me. If we don't find him, he's going to kill everybody. We need to find him. >> It was 3:00 p.m. on June 15th, 2010, [music] when police in Ruil La Madera, New Mexico, received this haunting 911 call. They had no idea that it marked the beginning of the most horrible killing spree of their careers. >> 911, what's your emergency? Ma'am, I really need you to take a deep breath and tell me I can't understand you. What's going on? >> 911. >> Ma'am, this is 911. What's going on? >> I'm [crying] in Ruil La Madera. I'M AT 300 ROAD. >> YOU'RE IN LA MADERA? WHAT'S GOING ON IN LA MADERA? >> I think he's got killed. >> WHO GOT SHOT? >> As dispatch desperately tried to get more information, the call cut off. They knew they had at least one person shot, and from the sounds of the hysterical caller, if they didn't get there fast enough, they were going to have more. But, there was a problem. The closest officers were 30 minutes away from the home dispatch traced the call to. As officers raced to the location of the call, they looked into what exactly they could be facing when they arrived. The home belonged to the Herrera family. 49-year-old Maria Brenda Rosita Gallegos, her husband, 55-year-old Max Trujillo Sr., and their three children, 21-year-old Damien Herrera, 20-year-old Brendan Herrera, and 16-year-old Carissa. A hardworking Hispanic family who were known by their neighbors as kind, giving people that always had a smile and a meal to offer those around them. The possibility that the entire family could be dead wasn't lost on officers. And as the 911 calls continued to flood in from concerned neighbors, that possibility became almost a certainty. >> Yes, can I help you? >> This kid has gone nuts. He shot his mom, his dad. >> Shot his mom, his dad, who else? >> And and his brother. >> When they arrived on the scene, they discovered exactly what the caller had claimed. Bodies all over the yard. >> She's barely holding on. He's 10-7 and this one's 10-7 here. There's a rifle. Barely, but it's she's it's actually probably better for her to be where she's at right now. It's coming now, you know what I mean? >> Both 20-year-old Brendan Herrera and his son father Max were cold to the touch when officers arrived. Beside Max, his wife Brenda laid in a pool of her own blood. She was clinging to life, just barely, and paramedics were miles away. At this point, police knew it's their only chance to get the name of the killer. Was it really her own son? And if he was willing to shoot his own mother, who else was he going to kill? >> Who Who shot you? >> Brenda's wound was so severe that she was unable to speak with officers. Armed with little information, they pushed into the house to clear it, unaware of the killer is inside or if he has more victims in there waiting to be saved. >> Sheriff's office. >> Sheriff's department. >> I'm going to go right. >> Sheriff's office. >> Sheriff's department. >> Sheriff's office. There's a room to the right. I'm going to straight there's some broken glass. Sheriff's office. A lot of weapons here. >> The sheer amount of weapons in the home only added to the stress the officers were feeling. What kind of weapon did their killer have and what else was he planning on doing with it? Just as they cleared the home, relatives of the victims rushed to the scene, one of whom has a shocking claim. And if you enjoy killers like this realize they're not winning an Oscar, subscribe and check out our Spotify where we upload podcasts every week. >> Right here, I need you guys to stay over there. Uh you're going to have to stay over there. This is a crime scene. This is a crime scene. You're going to have to go over here. I'm sorry, guys. Okay. WE NEED WE HAVE MEDICS WE HAVE THE MEDICS COMING OVER HERE. >> [laughter] >> YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE to treat it like a crime scene, okay? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I got to come over here. Let's go stand Is that your car? Okay, go stand over there. I'm going to have to move my car for the ambulance. Okay, you can't. You can't. This is a crime scene. >> [screaming] [crying] >> Who's Damian? Who's Damian? Damian what? >> [laughter] >> Damian? >> My dad first and then my brother and my mom. >> Oh, where's Damian? Where is he? >> Who told you this? Who told you this? >> it. I was there. >> You were there? >> I ran. >> Don't touch me. Come on, let's go. >> Come over here and sit in the back of my car, okay? This is Carissa, a teenager who has just dropped a bombshell for detectives. She witnessed the entire shooting of her family, which means that she, above anyone else, likely knows where the killer has gone. What So, what happened? You were here the whole time? >> I was scared and took off in my dad's truck. My dad got home and he was I seen that he was talking to him. I seen through the door that he was talking to him. And I didn't know anything. And my dad was coming back inside I was in my room. >> Did he Did he get the camera? >> And then my mom ran outside and my brother My brother ran outside and he got him on the ground and he >> [laughter] >> tried taking the gun away from him and he had him disabled and then I walked away and >> All right, seven central on two. We're going to need the crime scene van up here. >> And then my mom got UP AND SHE TOLD HIM >> ALL RIGHT, SEVEN central on two. >> My brother had an appointment today because I He's sick. I don't know what's wrong with him. >> But did they get in an argument? >> No, there was no argument. >> He just came up to him and shot him. >> I don't know. I was looking through the window and I seen them talking. And then I went because my sister-in-law got here with the baby. And then he just shot my dad. My dad, I don't know what to do. >> Police finally have a fully confirmed name for their killer, Damian Herrera, but they need more information on how and why, if they have any chance at tracking him down. Every second that passes is another second the killer is on the loose. Exactly what happened today. >> So, my brother he took my dad's truck and my dad was out for wood. My mom was at work and me and my brother they got over here. And >> [clears throat] >> dad got home and he was mad because that truck it's kind of broken so he's not supposed to take it out. And so when my brother got here I was standing in the screen door and I seen that me and dad was talking to my brother. But I don't know it didn't seem like they were arguing. I don't know. And then she got here with the baby so I went outside I got the baby and I took him inside and she went with me. And we went inside and once I took the baby out of the car seat the gun fired and he yelled for my mom. And he had a heart he was shot. I think he was shot twice I don't know. And then my brother ran outside and he got my brother down and he was getting the gun away from him. And my brother must have wrestled him down. And he Look and then my mom went to my brother and she told my brother with the gun to not shoot. And he shot my god. And I was by the truck and I just ran. Ran to the neighbor's house to go get the phone because when he shot my dad I called 911. And then my mom tried talking to them. And my brother with the gun took the phone away. And he threw it somewhere up there I don't know where he threw it. So we went to go look for the other phone but it didn't work. And and then he shot my mom. I ran to the neighbors and I waited there we called the ambulance. And he got in the truck and he just took off down that way somewhere I don't know where he went. But they left to go get my other brother, because he's working up there somewhere and he just stopped them and we don't know what to do. He's not my brother. Nick, I don't know He's not my mom. And >> When you're talking about him, who is him? >> Damion. >> Damion? >> Yes. I So, we know that he's sick. I know that he's sick and my mom took him for an appointment a few months a few weeks ago and he's seeing a counselor and she called him I think once over here and she He told my mom that she said he was fine. That Damion was fine. But I I didn't think he was fine and he had an appointment today at 4:00 at the clinic in Oklahoma City. And I don't know what that appointment was for. But I know I He's sick. He has to be sick. >> So, for the like he was already going to counseling and stuff because he was >> Yeah. >> What kind of sick was he? >> I don't know. He didn't tell my mom anything. The only thing he told my mom was that he didn't like the counselor calling him and um that he was fine. But they called him like a couple days ago I think and said that he needed to do blood tests and he didn't want to. And before like he My mom kept bringing him here because she wanted to help him or whatever, but he was living by himself forever over there in the housing. >> Yeah. >> Cuz my brother Brandon dumped him cuz he didn't want to live with him anymore because he was getting like really weird and stuff. And um but I don't know what kind of sickness he had. You can call the clinic. >> Are you okay? >> See my mom. >> No, stay right here. Stay right here. Stay right here. Stay right there. You have to be here, okay? >> I need to see them. I NEED TO SEE I NEED TO SEE MY BROTHER. >> I'LL LET YOU SEE THEM LATER, [laughter] but right now you can't, okay? I'm I was going to look for that now. You guys going to wait or not? Uh we're just going to close it for now until meds get here. Let's just fix the mirror. >> Yes. >> Yes. >> All right, so we have a central on two suspects. Going to be Damion Herrera and a grey Toyota with a headache rack older model. It went towards Petaca? It's going to be Petaca or El Rico? Send a bolo out towards El Rico. Where would he go? Does your brother know anybody in El Rico? Okay, I'm going to close the door. I have the air conditioner on, but we got to do some other stuff real quick, okay? It's going to be a Damian Herrera. Damian Herrera. >> Knowing the name of their killer and the direction he's gone is just part of the battle these officers are facing because the information Carissa has bravely given opens up endless possibilities. Damian has fled the scene of the crime in La Madera and entered what is essentially endless wilderness surrounded by mountains, forests, and dirt roads to nowhere and he already has a head start. It's been nearly an hour since the shooting took place, meaning he could be over 100 miles away and what his plan is is anyone's guess. Though his family has a concerning belief, one that's going to start a nationwide manhunt. >> She's She's still alive right now, okay? Did he leave with the gun or did he leave the gun? >> I ran down THE HILL BEFORE HE LEFT. >> What did he shoot him with? >> Oh, it was like a pistol. >> A pistol? >> Yeah, I don't know where he got it. >> [snorts] >> But that truck that he's on, it doesn't work. >> Did it come this way? It's a 40 female. >> Okay. No, no, no. In front of the red truck, female. She's barely breathing. Not yet, okay? Cuz I got to talk to you about what happened. So, how did it happen? They're right there in front of the red truck. Where is he? Where did he go? Where did he go, buddy? >> [laughter] >> What in what? In what? In what? Toyota? What does he have with him? What does Damian have with him? DID DAMIAN TAKE He's He might have one. All right. They're looking for him. Just leave it alone though, guys. >> [laughter] [crying] >> Damian's own family doesn't just believe, they know that he'll kill again. All over the county, officers are dispatched to be on the lookout for him and his vehicle. Though police desperately need to know what they're up against, they rush to speak to everyone on the scene in an effort to pin down what exactly Damian has for weapons with him and how much more damage they can do. >> Hello, sir. >> How you doing? >> Doing all right. How you doing doing today, Mr. Barry? What's going on? >> My best friend just got killed. And there was a struggle going on with Damian and the other boy. And they kind of went back into the garage and the girl their daughter went back there, too. And I don't know if there was one or two shots, but she came out saying "Oh, he shot somebody or something. I can't remember their names, but he did." >> The other boy? >> Yeah, and then Brenda ran back there and I followed her and as I went back I saw him pointing the gun at Brenda. Brenda was going like that at him. And as I passed the truck >> Standing? Standing up? >> Standing, yes. As I passed the truck, I lost view of him and I heard the shots. And when he came out, turned around, came out, I saw him he had the gun kicked open and reloading. He did reload. He didn't say anything out loud. >> So, it was a revolver? >> Yeah. >> Do you know what color? >> Black. >> All black? >> Yeah. >> So, he took that with him when he took off? >> I don't know. I He had it in his hand when I ran down the driveway. From then on, I don't know. >> Did he leave with a gun, too? Did he leave with the gun or did he leave the gun? >> I ran DOWN THE HILL BEFORE HE LEFT. >> What did he shoot him with? >> Oh, it was like a pistol. >> A pistol? >> Yeah, I don't know where he got it from. >> But the police are about to find out where he is. His family has warned that he'll kill again. And at 4:00 p.m., just an hour after he killed his entire family, they discover he's done just that. >> We have some other incidents going on. >> 40 minutes north of La Madera on Forest Road in Tres Piedras, New Mexico, a report of a shooting comes in. 61-year-old Michael Kite had just retired from working as an archaeologist in Carson National Forest. He retired to his beautiful mountain home where he found joy in being self-sufficient, growing food for his home and community, and woodworking. But as he walked out to his car, he was shot by 21-year-old Damien Herrera. Damien grabbed his truck and left, leaving Michael's wife to discover him dead in the driveway. Now, Damien had a different car, and he had proven that it wasn't revenge against his family that he was after. He was killing out of pure bloodlust. One team was dispatched to hunt Damien down in the stolen car. Meanwhile, his sister, friends, and neighbors were brought in for questioning by another team, desperate to try and find out where Damien could be heading next. And what they had to say only made police more certain they were running out of time to find him. >> When you saw him leave, he went down towards >> towards El Cajon >> towards El Cajon Canyon Road? >> Yeah. Took him a while to leave the area. I don't know. >> So, he was probably getting rounds. >> Mhm. >> He might have gone back. He might have went back inside. I was gone. I don't know. >> Probably got more rounds or more guns. >> Mhm. >> Did he ever uh point the gun at you or to make threats [snorts] to you? >> Uh no. I was um when he shot Breann and then he shot my mom, he was on the side of the other truck. I was on this side of the truck, he was on this side. And when he shot my mom >> Yeah. He was by the tree. When he saw that when he shot my mom and he seen that I seen, he didn't do anything. He just started walking. >> Okay. If he had a Glock style of gun on him, it would have been a little pocket clip one or shooter 22. >> that big, but I don't think >> Four shooter 22, does it fold? >> Yeah, it's a folding one. But, I don't think >> He always has that on him. >> Mhm. >> He always carries it on him. >> I don't Yeah, but I don't think he would have wanted to shoot them yet on >> [snorts] >> Yeah, he always has that on him. The 22 long? >> Yeah, I think so. Yeah. >> And [snorts] is that like a revolver type, too? >> Mhm. Yeah, just a four shot. >> one. >> Okay. Is there anything else that you could think of that could help us tie in what happened today? >> I mean, anything. I didn't talk to him. >> Has he made any like um remarks that he wants to hurt himself or >> others? >> He's made remarks where he wants to hurt others. That's why um Brendan moved out from their house in Albuquerque because he was saying things like that. >> Did he say that he would want to hurt others because they were after him? >> he's just said that he wanted to hurt others just for fun. Like just to do it. >> Damian has wanted to kill for a long time, not for revenge or out of anger, but for fun. And at this point, police are terrified because from the spot of Damian's last known location, he has two different directions he can go, into the mountains or towards Santa Fe. Santa Fe, the big city where there are plenty of innocent people he'd love to gun down. >> Is there anything else that you could remember? Did you see him um hurt anybody else or do anything else? You just saw him hurt >> Max? >> Yeah, and and I pretty much just saw Brendan trying to take it away from him, which it it was really giving him a hard time to to take it away from him. >> Okay. >> And Brendan, they're both trying to get it away from him. And I could tell they were struggling to take it away cuz he was really persistent on >> So, when you say Brendan was trying to Brendan said that Max was dead? >> No. >> Or Brendan said that Max was dead and that's when he said "He's not dead yet." >> No one had said that. Um when we had looked up the the door, she was crying and yelling at his name and she's trying to give him CPR. Brendan was yelling at Damion because Damion, I guess, looked like or seemed that he was going to try shooting him again and that's when he yelled at him, "He's dead." to Damion and Damion yelled it back that he wasn't dead yet. But he wasn't even moving or anything. >> And did you see anybody else with guns? >> No, I saw Brendan trying to get the gun away from Damion and he succeeded at one point and then Damion tackled him and they started wrestling over the gun and me and Shay left to call 911. And as we were leaving, I need to tell you this, as we were leaving, um and I was putting the baby in the car and jumped in the car, I witnessed Damion dragging Max's body from where he had shot him, the front door, around towards the back door where we ran out of the house. >> door? >> Well, it's a side door, I guess. >> So, is that when you're looking at the house, is it the door um >> When you pull up the driveway, it's like right here on this side of the house. Like you can see it when you pull in the driveway. The door. >> Okay, it's out in the back by where the sheds are? >> No, that's um that is Max's old room. That's the door that leads his room. This is the door that was in I guess the like the dining room living room area, I guess it would be. Yeah, cuz we ran like through the kitchen and downstairs and then the door was right there. And there was a dog >> door that he dragged it to? >> When we ran outside, he was dragging him towards that door. Like over towards like I don't know what he was doing and Brandon was screaming at him and running after him telling him to leave him alone and put him down. And then Damion was screaming, "He's not dead yet." And me and Shy black >> [snorts] >> I don't know why he'd be dragging his body, but >> I'm really sorry for your friend. >> I don't understand why. >> Did um in your experience and past of like knowing him and stuff, cuz you you seem very observant based on what your statement that you're giving me and that's the drawing that you're giving me. >> Yeah. >> I this is really really really helpful for me. Did [snorts] he look or appear different than normal, Damion? >> That's the creepy thing is he didn't. >> He didn't? >> He seemed like he knew exactly what he was doing. Like he knew like he had the intention to do it. Like it was planned. Cuz he seemed like so calm. Like he wasn't freaking out. He wasn't like, "Oh my god, what did I just do?" He was like like he was trying to bury him and get rid of evidence or something. Like he was I don't know. He acted like he knew exactly what he was doing. It did not seem like an accident or anything. >> [snorts] >> Cuz he shot like right here, like the blood was all over it right here. >> It was Brenda who who came around and said she she shot him. Max was shot. >> Max was shot. Then you saw him and um Brendan um scuffling >> scuffling or >> That's when you heard a shot or two. >> Uh-huh. >> And did you see >> I didn't see, no. >> That was >> And I walked around the corner, I saw him laying on the ground. And that's where I looked up and saw uh Duman standing there with the gun. And Brenda was just getting up from Brendan going like that. >> And did you see what happened after that? After Brenda came up with her hands? >> No, I heard the shot. I didn't see it actually hit her. >> And that was before she had the gun with the cylinder? >> That That was before, yeah. You The shot happened. I passed the cab of the truck. He turned around, passed you on the other side. And I saw him at that point. He looked straight at me. And I thought I I thought he was going to load up again and shoot everybody. There was just nothing there. Just That's why I thought we were next. There's nothing. >> When you say like the look on his face >> It was blank. Like just like poker face, you wouldn't believe. >> Like a blank stare? >> Yeah. No emotion. >> For 2 hours, police have no idea where the deranged killer is. They hunt mountain roads, send out a bolo for the stolen vehicle, and desperately canvas neighborhoods in the hopes of finding him. And when they finally do get a hit, their worst fears are confirmed. He's killed again. Manuel Serrano, 59, a security guard with a love of art, was pumping gas at Bode's store in Abiquiu, New Mexico, when Damien approached him and shot him in the back. He then stole his vehicle and took off, leaving him bleeding by the gas pump. Damien is fleeing south on the freeway, heading towards Santa Fe. And if they don't catch him, there's no telling what will happen. Fortunately, an officer heading north spots him and gives chase. For over 10 miles, Damien swerves in and out of traffic, nearly causing several accidents. >> He is now driving in the northbound lane, northbound lane passing vehicles. He's coming around the curve of uh 198. He's going to might go head-on. Oh my goodness. Almost going head-on, Central. Oh, he's going to wreck. I think he's wrecked. I think he's flipped. >> As Damien tries to veer around a car, he crashed into a tree, wrecking the vehicle in a plume of smoke and flames. >> Got your vehicle, Larry. Call for ambulance. Call for ambulance. >> Is that him? >> Damien has a call an ambulance, but not for me moment here. Just as the officer is calling for help, he sprints out of the smoke, gun and knife in his possession. >> Gun. Stop right there. STOP RIGHT THERE. HANDS UP. WATCH MY BACK. >> I'M DOWN. >> WATCH MY BACK. >> I'M DOWN. >> HEY. HOLD ON, JOE. >> WATCH MY WATCH MY BACK. >> I'M DOWN. >> WATCH MY BACK. >> I'M DOWN. >> STOP. >> YOU STUCK YOUR [ __ ] [ __ ] >> IN THE STRUGGLE, choked out by the smoke, Damian managed to get his hands on the officer's gun and fired off a single shot. The officers froze, unsure who had been shot, and thankfully the bullet had missed one of the officers by just inches. >> OKAY. >> CAREFUL OF THE KNIFE. CAREFUL OF THE KNIFE. >> I GOT THE KNIFE. I got the knife. >> Hands up. Hurry up. >> I'm down. I'M DOWN. >> KEEP GOING. KEEP GOING. >> I'M DOWN. I'M DOWN. >> GUN. I GOT A GUN. I GOT A GUN. Get the gun. >> I'm down. I'm down. I'm in jail. >> Watch your >> I didn't do anything. >> Put your foot. >> I just swear. I swear I didn't do anything. >> Where did you get a gun? Where did you put your gun? >> Okay. Okay. I'm out. I'm done. I'm done. >> You in what? >> I almost got shot. >> What did you do? >> I was trying to sell. >> He almost got shot. >> Oh, man. >> Shut up. Shut up. Yeah, homie. He almost got shot. >> What did you >> He was trying to He was trying to grab my gun. >> It's all good, bro. >> Well, no. Did you He kept grabbing my leg and you were reaching. >> He was grabbing my gun. >> Yeah. >> I wasn't trying to get anything. You guys [ __ ] tackled me. >> Yeah, vehicle clear. >> [gasps] >> I had a .22 rifle, man. >> Where's the rifle? >> It's somewhere in there. You guys >> Thank you. >> I had to defend myself. >> It's no surprise to officers that Damien is pulling the I didn't do anything card. But after what they've been through tracking him down, they aren't having it. So he punched you. He punched you so you shot him, huh? >> In the back of the cop car, Damien laments his bad luck. >> Some [ __ ] man. You guys know how it is. America. Nobody knows. Come on. You take off these cuffs. >> All right, two central. >> Sir. >> No. >> They're making my wrist bleed. >> All right, two central. We have anybody at booking? >> I have rights, bro. It's You're good. Get off these things. Loosen them. Loosen them. What did I do wrong? I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't touch you, right? Cody, he's going to push my face. >> Finally, police transport him to the hospital, the same one where several of his victims have been pronounced dead. And yet he shows no remorse. >> So what happened here? >> I crashed my face into a hospital. >> Who's involved in the crash? >> No, are you a suspect in it? >> Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Relax. >> Just like I said, Damien, just relax. Okay? >> I got guys pursuing me, but I don't want to keep saying that he had an accident. >> From my understanding from what he's saying, he didn't. I don't know because that's under investigation. >> Was there an accident? I just need to know if I need to get a CAT scan of his head or [ __ ] like that. >> Um >> We got some vital signs right quick. >> One of our deputies and two of our deputies and the medics that were there >> Yeah, he didn't roll He didn't roll over. What did he do? >> He just went the axle broke. He went off the roadway instead of off-roading. >> And it was a rollover. >> He rolled off the road, man. But he didn't roll the truck at all. So he shouldn't have >> Got you out. >> That's all I care about because if he's not injured from that, he's cleared to go, so >> You have medical problems? >> Um >> Psych, I'm guessing. Yes. >> You don't take meds? >> Yeah. >> I'm drug free. I'm something. >> Police believe that after hours of chaos, things have finally come to an end. But Damian isn't done making everyone's life a living hell just yet. A month later, on July 15th, Damian tricked a correctional officer into his cell by asking for help with his sink. Then he locked the guard inside, grabbed a flashlight to use as a weapon, and readied himself to attack. Unfortunately for him, the guard was just as ready. He defended himself with a chair, and back up arrived to restrain Damian. As of the publishing of this video, Damian is sitting in prison after being handed four consecutive life sentences for murder, in addition to 9 and 1/2 years for other charges. He has continued to defend and diminish his actions, claiming he killed in self-defense. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this horrible crime. Thank you for tuning in.
