Our Father, [music] who art in heaven, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. >> Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us and trespass from the evil. >> Is someone responsive? >> Yes. Upstairs. >> Is she right here? >> Yes, I got a female. >> In Jesus [music] name we pray. Amen. What officers have just walked into is the Ohio home of 19-year-old Nia Patterson and her mother Angela, only to find Angela dead, murdered by her own daughter. >> There's a lot of blood in here. >> Months before this, Nia's relationship with her mother had slowly begun ruining her life. Is she trying to get me? >> As her feelings towards Angela turned from annoyance to hatred to homicidal until enough was enough. >> [laughter] >> Yeah. >> On April 26th, 2024, police in Ohio received a frantic 911 call from 19-year-old Nia Patterson. Not just reporting a crime, but reporting that she was the one who had committed it. >> 911 was location of your emergency. >> 911 was location of your emergency. >> You, >> what's the address? I just saw my mama. I don't know if she dead, but I need an ambulance and I need a 911. >> I need you to take it. >> I was in fear for my life. >> They are on the way, but I need >> the odd claim that her mom killed her siblings has police on edge as they arrive. They don't know if they're walking into a situation where there will be several victims or just one. And when they arrive, things only grow more confusing. South, please. I don't have a weapon. I'mma stand right here cuz I DON'T WANT Y'ALL TO THINK I'M COMING DOWN. >> Is someone unresponsive? >> Yes. >> Where? >> Upstairs. >> Where? Okay. What's going on? Where are they at? Here. >> Let's go. >> What's going on? >> Where they at? >> Where they at? Show me where they're at. >> She right here. >> What's going on? Yes. I got a male with a female. Looks like back. >> Yes, sir. >> Was there a gunshot? >> Yes. >> Where's your firearm? >> I don't. >> Did you shoot her? >> Yes, sir. >> 18 to the car's caller said that. >> Do not move. >> She was running towards me and she fell on the floor. >> Where's the firearm? >> It's It's outside. I don't have it. So, I'm sorry. >> Stand here. Cross your feet. Don't move. Yes, sir. >> The officer races back into the bedroom to confirm whether the victim is alive. He begins CPR while Nia sits in the hallway detained. The woman he's trying to save is 47-year-old Angela Bates, a hardworking nurse and mother who has dedicated her entire life to not only her children, but also to make the world safer for children everywhere as a gun safety advocate. For years, she provided testimony during National Gun Violence Survivors Week due to the fact that three of her children were killed due to gun violence. The most recent, her son Damen had just been killed 3 years prior. And tragically, she met the same fate as three of her children, but at the hands of her own daughter. Unfortunately, officers and medics were unable to revive her, leaving them with only one way to help, by getting justice for her. >> No, on the ground right there. >> Let's grab Let's get a re get her out. a few females upstairs. GFW to the back. Uh, two [snorts] cases up there. Spven bullet. She's had firearms outside somewhere. Start a crime scene. >> Okay. >> Where's that firearm at? Okay. Get in here. >> Okay. Before you say anything else, [snorts] >> I'm going to Miranda you before I ask you any other questions. Okay. Nia is mirandaized and left in the cruiser. But back in the home, police still have to pick up the pieces, namely, how the hell did this happen and why? And if you enjoy killers like this, realize they're not winning an Oscar. Subscribe and check out our Spotify where we upload podcasts every week. >> So, to me, it makes me think that what's her name? Angela like raised the chair up in the air >> to uh fend her daughter off. It looks like her daughter shot through the through the seat part of the chair. Okay. It went through. >> Yeah, it went through. >> Splintered. >> There's splinters on top of the bed. Uh, a big chunk of the seat part of the chair broke off and it's underneath the bed and the chairs over in front of the bed where the TV is. She shot through the TV. It penetrated and went out the wall. This is going to be a homicide. [clears throat] >> No one else supposed to be in the house? >> I not to my knowledge. I just She was up there. She said she came at her, searched and shot her and that was it. There's a firearm out here somewhere. She said, "Yeah, I got in the front seat of this car." >> Based on the wounds in the presence of a gun, law enforcement know that Angela was killed after being shot, but a neighbor provides interesting insight into what happened leading up to the gun being fired. >> So, the lady next door, the lady next door said she heard seven to 10 shots. She heard screaming. She heard yelling. No voice yelling. probably seven to 10 shots. >> And very quickly, police locate another way to narrow down exactly how Angela was shot. >> There's a ring camera right here. Right there. And right here. So, this house has Ring cameras all over it. >> Yeah. On the back on the garage right there. So, you mentioned something about having a Ring camera on when I first went in the house, too. So, we'll make sure. >> Right there on the front. >> I think maybe inside the house, too. Police promptly check the ring cameras, which paint a picture of either someone who is fully insane or is pretty good at acting like it. The following footage takes place after the shots were fired upstairs in the bedroom. [screaming] Here, Nia can be seen putting the gun in the car where police found it and then making a well strange choice in a string of strange choices. [screaming] When Nia's stepfather is shown the footage much later, he says what we're all thinking. >> And this is what I was looking at when I was >> you at the bar and you're looking at the light. >> I'm looking at that right there. But I call my wife on this phone. But my wife was never answering the phone. Then I call her phone. It went straight to me. >> [snorts] [screaming] >> Yeah, just >> that's where the living room from from uh from the time you left until the time >> from the time me and my wife left out to go to hide. >> Right. [snorts] >> And that's not the only fake behavior Nia displayed because soon law enforcement discovers more on her phone. social media posts she made showing her mother's body just moments after she fired the fatal shots into her >> [crying] >> My st my [screaming] I got She trying to get me killed. Yeah. [crying] Why you make me do this [ __ ] Why you make me do this [ __ ] [gasps] She killed my siblings. Y'all probably she got my siblings cube. >> And back at the scene, the crazy train is still making most of its stops at this station. Detained in the back of the police car, Nia talks to her dead siblings, her dead mother, and evidently God. Though my guess is he's not really picking up the phone for her right now. >> But that's what you deserve. God, please forgive me. I'm just kidding. on me. Do this on me. >> She has to die. She has to die. I never tell nobody ever. I guess that is. No, it's not. I know. I love y'all. Y'all just got me sent to jail for nothing. I thought that was the wrong thing to do. Self-defense. That's some real [ __ ] Self-defense. Regardless of how y'all put it, self-defense. Period. purpose. >> Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us and trespassed against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. >> Following her prayer and Ouija session, Nia is transported for booking. Though she picks up a different role once police sit her down and the reality of her situation begins to crash down around her. Now, she's not insane. She's having a seizure. >> Did she make it? I don't know. >> Can y'all let me know if y'all find out? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. We have no idea what's uh firing if they do anything about everything. >> Well, what we're going to do is we're just going to book you in. We're not going to ask you any questions about what happened. Our detectives are coming in. They're going to handle that. Okay. >> So, all the questions we ask you are going to be specifically just for the booking process. >> Okay. Cool. >> I was just I hear you. I hear you. I just, you know, right now that's where we're going to keep it. All right, we're going to do your left hand over here. [snorts] >> If you start feeling lightheaded or anything like that, you need to let me know so that I can almost >> that I can take care of you. Do you need to sit down on the floor? Yes. >> Why don't you just do that? Just right just like sit over here and looking against your back against there. Okay. If you start to feel like you're gonna pass out or anything, you got to let me know so that I can take care of you. Okay. >> I can drink water. >> Um I don't know if we have any cups for a drink of water, but as soon as I can find one, I will get you one. Okay. You just got to give me a minute. All right. But again, if you start feeling anything, you got to let me know so I can take care of you. Okay. [snorts] I had seizures, but I think I had a silk. You do you feel like you're getting ready to have one? Is that why you're telling me that? Yes, >> I'm going to have you do this. Why don't you just go ahead and lay lay down? Hey. Hey. You want to lay down? this under your head. She has seizures. It feels like she's having one. Come on. So, I might when I call the squad. >> When's the last time you had one, sweetie? [laughter] >> Just try to take some deep breaths and relax. I got you. Okay. I got you. Relax. Breathe. Breathe. Mia, you got to take some deep breaths, sweetie. >> Okay, you good. Nia, she's definitely You got to take You got to breathe for me. You're okay. I got you, Nia. I got you. I got you. All right. All right. I got you, sweetie. You got it. Take a deep breath. >> Deep slow breath. You're okay. I know you're okay. Take a deep slow breath. Deep slow breath. My mom says I have ADHD and I'm a friend, but the doctor said I don't have it. >> So the doctor said you don't have it. Okay. When's the last time you talked to the doctor about that? >> Uh, the last time I had the seizure. >> You talked about the schizophrenia and bipolar as well. And the doctor said nothing there. Just seizures. >> Yes. >> Do you know what kind of seizures they are? What type? >> It's from trauma. >> Just traumatic seizures. Okay. But if it don't stop, I can have them be. He had prescribed me some medication. >> Okay. Okay. >> Now, as far as we were able to tell in all the files and interrogations with her biological father and stepfather, Nia didn't have any known disorder that causes seizures and hadn't experienced one before. Judging by the display you're about to see, she's never actually even seen one before. >> What's going on right now? >> I'm having a trauma based. >> Yes. I got you. >> Okay, >> when's the last time you had one of these? >> Okay. All right. Okay. Well, we got to stand up. Okay. >> Okay. >> Can we stand up? >> Yeah. >> All right. Watch your head coming up. Watch your head. >> [snorts] >> was more of a which one. >> I have nothing as of right now. Let me go. You got to relax. Okay. >> There's a bottom section of that form that you're going to need. What's your >> weapon? What's your last name? >> After paramedics exchange an is this for real glance, they load her into the ambulance. >> All right, [clears throat] Nia, we're going to get up to the hospital. Okay. >> Okay. >> Nia is taken to the hospital. I didn't say rushed because, as you can see, they don't have much to rush for considering the fact that her seizures magically appear and disappear at random throughout her transport and hospital stay. >> Yeah. Just sit back. Okay. I don't want you pulling her socket or anything. Okay. Sit back. Just trying to get her real quick. Okay. >> Okay. At this point, Nia seems to have realized that there's no getting out of the situation she's put herself in. The tears continue to flow as she's kept in the hospital for monitoring and eventually transported to a holding cell. Nia doesn't answer law enforcement's questions, which leaves them scrambling for answers. First, they go and speak to her stepdad who had left the home just minutes before the shooting and tragically saw Neo running down the stairs in the aftermath on his Ring camera app on his phone. >> And there's no cameras on the second floor. No, it was one up there. But I've been I've been down like when she got locked up and went to Detroit and I put it in the driveway. >> Who got locked up? >> She she [snorts] locked up for like two years. She >> came down from up. >> What was she locked up for in Detroit? >> [ __ ] I think it was um she was here a Cleveland police officer. She had assault on her. I think that's what it was. So at at the time they didn't have a a facility for behavior of kids. So they sent her to Detroit. >> Yeah. Yeah. She was she been off the chains man for quite some time. >> I just told her man like how can you ever think your killed your brother and your sister? He tricked himself man. >> Right. The mother was here. >> I don't think we ever got it clear. >> Nia's mother suffered the loss of three children, all within just a few years of one another. One of her children took his life while two others were shot as a result of street violence. She suffered a grief that no mother should have to endure, not just once or twice, but three times. Her only remaining child was Nia, and for some reason, Nia became convinced that her mother had killed her siblings despite the fact that she hadn't. Police ask about Nia as a person. Keep in mind, unfortunately, her name and Angela's are both redacted in the footage, but we're confident you can fill in the blanks. >> So, help me understand, right? So, live with you guys, but eventually she went to go live with her her dad in a >> m >> when was that? like six, seven months ago. >> Okay. Six, seven months ago. >> And in that six or seven months since she moved to dad with Akan, she come visit you. >> Mhm. >> I cuz I know that cuz we we were we were called there, right? >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Okay. So, she lived with you guys since you moved into the grosser house up until six or seven months ago. like that. >> She left for maybe two and a half years cuz she was up in Detroit back and forth. >> It's been an ongoing. >> Okay. So, I I know you know on Friday and Saturday morning we talked quite a bit. We talked on the phone a couple times. All right. >> I'm going to run through what what I put together in talking to you, right? and tell me if I'm missing anything or adding it or I need to add it. >> Okay. >> Right. >> So, you come to find out that about a month ago told her bio dad that she thinks had her siblings killed. Correct. Right. Um, fast forward to uh the Sunday prior to this >> Mia is at your house. >> She she says to you, "Hey, Dad, I think mom had my siblings killed." >> No. Well, see, initially started like I was laying in the bed. I'm in my bed. I'm laying just like this in the bed. Why did you leave? She walked in the door and she said, "Uh, Dad, I need to talk to you." So I still ain't never [ __ ] up because I'm I'm always saying about she stay on [ __ ] You know what I mean? I'm like what's going on man? I'm looking at the floor like what's going on? She said no. She said you remember you told me whenever I feel I can always come to you and I can talk to you. I said daughter what's going on. She said you ain't going to judge me about what I'm getting ready to say. I talk about what's going on. So I said no daughter I'm not going to judge you. I told you whenever you need to come to talk to me about anything you can and if I don't have the answers for you I'll make a phone call for you because I know you deal with ministry you know what I mean so I don't know what you about to ask so she sit on the on the end of the bed and I said what is it cuz she has to take she's not asking I said well what is it so she said dad I hope you don't judge me man listen daughter what is it I'mma be honest with you dad I know in my heart and I really believe mama had she didn't say she killed them she said mama had them killed I said straight up in the bed at my little house she was on I said what did you just say she said d now you try to judge me I said no I'm not going to judge you repeat what you just said to me though she said I believe mama behind and kill I said daughter come Oh, man. I I did just like this. I said, "Daughter, daughter, you got to be kidding me, bro." I did this what I did, man. I said, "Are you serious, man?" I said, "What make you think that?" She said, "Dad, I'm telling you the truth." I said, "Well, that mean that you know it's not true." I said, "How could your mother ever have them killed and damn shot in the back of the head? Your sister got killed down on shield by the hardest felons dudes in a little shootout at the wrong place at the wrong time. How could you ever collaborate in your brain that your mother had them? She said, "Dad, now you trying to tell me. I'm just telling you what I think." I said, "You know what? You don't need to think that." I got straight went downstairs in the kitchen. My wife was on the phone on the phone. She said, "Yeah." I said, "Man, tell me." So, I'm standing there. She She ain't never came down. She in the room. wife from that girl told me that [ __ ] two days ago. >> Oh, on the Friday. >> Uh, no. This was that Sunday. >> Yeah. No, no, no. What I'm saying is Nia told the the Friday prior. >> So, she had to cuz my wife my wife said my wife said she told me she said that [ __ ] to me two days ago. I told that girl out my face. That's what she did. And she brushed me. She threw one hand off like that. [snorts] >> Nia held beliefs that her mother had killed her mom, not just for days or weeks, but evidently years. She'd been mentioning the belief on and off to her family members, including her biological father. And as time went on, her beliefs and anger seemed to grow. >> You mentioned that had threatened both you and your wife before. >> Oh, plenty of times. >> She did. Tell me about those threats. >> It's be like like when she always felt like what she hated I think about her mother. She felt like her mom didn't love her because her mom was with me. And she always used to say, "Yeah, I can't believe you going to choose your daughter." She used to say that all the time. >> You know what I mean? [ __ ] You going to choose this [ __ ] over me? So my wife like, "Listen, that's my husband. You gonna have a husband one day. You can't just be being disrespectful in this house." >> Why? Why would you say that? I mean, >> because because what it be before I got the cameras in the house, this girl, man, was my house. I hear the dogs barking one night. If y'all remember how the house is. I came out of the room. I said, "Damn, that that bathroom window was wide open, right? And I and I looked I said, "Man, I my whole spirit said that somebody was just in my house." So when when I go back to my room, I tell her, I said, "Man, I think somebody was in here." I said, "Man, go check the rooms." So Nia room was right here. She um had pushed a dresser or something up against her door. So, make a long story short when her and get into it and then she had that boy screaming in there. He been climbing out that back window. He he step up on the garbage can and and clean up. I was wondering why that gun was hanging down. >> So, I mean, so just just not not to cut you off, but just just so I have a general understanding. So would say that she that she's choosing you over her because you >> you have rules accused her of doing something and >> she never been with a guy that cared about her and and and and set some boundaries and some rules around was running they was running around when I met her >> because N was mad that her mom didn't stick up for her stick up for her when I directed her. All right. >> Is that a fair character? >> All right. Um, now [snorts] we also talked about that chair. >> Okay. >> That was in your room. That wooden chair >> that's normally in your room. >> Yeah, that's always in. >> Okay. >> Her stepfather, who was a big fixture in her life and had been for several years, wasn't just hated by Nia. He was despised. [music] Not because he was doing anything wrong, but because Nia wanted it to just be her and her mother. Here is her biological dad talking about her relationship with her stepfather. >> Why did Why did she so much? because didn't let her get away with the stuff that her mother would like. I don't know if she felt like one was in a way of loving her mom, loving her, how she wanted her mom to love her. But I would have to tell her all the time like everything she's just so focused on, I'mma break them up. I'mma break them up when I be talking to her, you know? And >> she tell you that. Yeah. And and I'll be like, "Nia, don't say stuff like that." I'm like, "Your mom's not leaving her. That's her husband. You're going to grow up. You're gonna go away and get married, and this is who she's going to be with. Do you want her to be old and by herself?" And, you know, all of that stuff. So, we talked about it. Like, she never really told me no hate that she had for her mother like that. >> Leading up to the murder, Nia was staying with her biological dad. However, she began to disobey his rules, disappearing at night and eventually sneaking to a local park where she got a tattoo on her neck. At that point, her biological father told her she had to move back in with her stepdad and mom. And that didn't go so well. >> I said, "Okay, you could be grown outside my house. That's the final straw. You got to go." And I told her that right then and there. And um I called and I said, "I got a call. I said, "You better come get her cuz she can't stay here no more." And can Oh, I left out the part. She hit her brother. She hit and he's only 10, but he's the same height as me. He's not no little kid. And he comes running down and he's crying to me. And he like, "Dad," he was like, "Um, I hate her. I want her to leave." And I'm like, "Why?" He like, "Cuz she just always doing stuff to me. She be torturing me and I'm scared of her." And I'm like, "Why are you scared of her?" And he was like, cuz she be talking about killing people and stuff and she was be talking about No, he said she be talking about killing. And I said, what? Killing who? And he said she be talking about killing and it be scaring me. And so to see him and know that he was >> scared and coming to me saying that, you know, and then those actions, it was just enough like, okay, you have to go, you know. >> So, but but she didn't she didn't they didn't pick her up till Friday. >> Yeah. Yeah. And he he told me this like on Wednesday or something cuz he was sitting there playing this game and she threw some water on him and she threw I watched the camera. She did it a couple times. Like she was purposely trying to like destroy his equipment cuz he's a gamer. Like that's >> that's his stuff. >> Yeah. I don't know how to work any of that stuff. So >> Yeah. [laughter] Me. Yeah. You got to make all these. >> He's definitely a gamer. >> Yeah. I buy the stuff that he asked me if he keeps his grades up, you know. So, >> well, it looks like he's got good grades. [laughter] >> Nia's anger was boiling over, not just for her mother, but for almost every member of her family, including her halfb brotherther, biological dad, and extended relatives, and it wasn't subtle. >> Alone told me she's been planning in this for 3 months. But I don't want to say that. I don't. He said it was something in the journal or something that said that she'd been talking about killing for for for months or so. Not specifically three months, but he was like she'd been talking about killing people in her journal for months, you know. >> So, do you guys have a journal? >> Yeah. >> Of hers. >> Was she talking about doing something to me or my son in this journal? >> We we didn't see that yet. We're still we still have to go through those. We're still working on that, but we you know we we took them for a reason because we were seeing some stuff in in them. >> Okay. >> Um but we haven't had a chance to totally go through them. >> Okay. >> Uh that should happen in the next, you know, few days or weeks or >> Right. because I would like to know like cuz she was saying I I cuz I I didn't I knew that Imani had a mental illness but I never got to see any of it because all of the bad things that people said she did. >> I never got to see any of it whenever she would be around me. It just >> they just the kids don't I know I don't play. So they did not especially my daughters they just >> were always in my eyes. I don't know if I you know they say love can be blinding so I don't know ignorant to but >> so like even you know I had fought with to even put her in the mental places in the past because I'm like ain't nothing wrong with her. They just stopped making her take them pills. I just I didn't believe in the medication and the mental therapy that a been putting her through her whole life. But it's guess as good as she was. >> Yeah. What was Nia diagnosed with that? You know, >> I don't know. Um, but you know, she was diagnosed with something. >> Well, I Yeah, I just know that she's been in mental facilities. >> Armed with all of this information, her stepfather proposes a theory on his wife's last few moments alive. >> I believe when I left, that girl went down the steps cuz my wife was occupied. She had a whole bunch of papers on that bed. She was occupied with whatever she was doing or looking for. I believe that girl came down and probably look out the window, watch me bag out and go down with this [ __ ] happened to you. I think she went back upstairs right here. I started to tell her, "Put that up. This is where the gun was laying at." >> All right. All right. So, let me stop here. So, when you left, the gun was laying right there right there. >> But, see my bed or on the >> stand. So, when I left, I believe that girl came down the steps and watched me pull it off. She must have came back and picked up and stood in that door because why I say that is >> this bullet holes right here right >> where my wife was standing I don't know like just saying that's the door if she stood at that door >> and said whatever she said to her and fire shots and missing my wife move that's probably how the TV got knocked out then and as my wife probably was trying to make her way around here that's why I seen two holes in the TV. I think it was some discussion going on because that spot where the TV was and where the refrigerator was at, I see no blood. So, but it shots there and I'm saying to myself, she must have was missing her and she was coming around there to try to get to her. And when she got directly in the line of fire, Reverend, that's when she hit her. And that's where that's where all the blood ended up right here in my bedroom. >> Ultimately, despite her attempts at acting insane, Nia was found guilty of murdering her mother and was sentenced to life in prison [music] with the possibility of parole after 18 years.
