I spent all night worrying about my husband and not today. >> Why are you jumping to his death? >> I'm feeling accused is what I'm feeling. >> This is 49year-old Star Meers and she's [music] just killed her husband and their desolate Wisconsin home surrounded by acres of forest and miles away from help. >> He was from God. It just hurts. It >> Because if Star couldn't have Richard Bourke, then no one could. as she now pretends to be a morning wife, aiding police on the hunt for Richard, unaware that they know everything. >> Is it true that you went and asked your son and his fiance to help get rid of the body? >> I didn't want them to take him. >> You're going to be going to prison. That's tough. You're going to be gone for a while. >> On March 9th, 2023, police in Wisconsin responded to a rural property to file a missing person's report. there. 49-year-old Star Meers claimed that her husband, Richard Bourke, had been missing for 2 days. But from the get-go, there's something wrong with the situation. At this point, Star has no idea that police are already eyeing her for the disappearance, but she's going to learn pretty quickly. >> Gay. So Steve had Steve talked to him earlier this week, like the beginning of this week, he said, but hasn't talked to him in the last two, three days or two, three, four days. Um, doesn't know where he'd be at, but uh, did you did you call his mom and dad? >> Okay. >> But he's my whole world. It's my gift from God. I need my husband back in worried feel that I can't breathe without it or died. But >> as far as anywhere I can go to check where he would be, you can't think of any place. >> When he takes off for a drive, he spit up a church down there. He sees he sits in the parking lot and kills me through Wi-Fi. Um the farm, but they were told because I called his sister and called his mom. Um, Walmart. He likes to just drive around. Now I'm worried. Do we need to leave a note? No. I can't say. You can never tell what a person's thinking. You can never tell what a person's going to do. And I'm not saying that's what happened. I have no idea. >> If I'm person, I didn't noticed it. I was worried about me. >> I I get it. >> From the start, Star's emotions are over the top. And police already know one reason why. At the time of this call, Star was actually waiting to report to prison for drug trafficking charges, specifically drugs of the Walter White variety. And it's not her first rodeo. Throughout the early 2000s, she racked up charges for battery, DV, and driving under the influence. Murder is new, but to police, it isn't exactly surprising. >> So, I guess what were you guys talking about on Tuesday then >> before you left? What was going on? >> Me and him. >> Yeah. >> Um nothing. He was still sleeping. I gave him a kiss on the um cheek and I told him that I was going to talk to her and he's like, "Are you driving?" I'm like, "No, I'm not driving." Cuz I don't drive. So, she came with me out. He's like, "Okay, I'll show you when we get there." I'm like, "Here's your coffee." Knife was blood on it so it would be warm. And he had it. And he like cigarette and he left. We didn't fight. >> Okay. So, he he lit a cigarette and then you left. >> Yeah. I don't smoke. >> Okay. >> She doesn't smoke the green is what she means. >> And as far as the camera, does that cover any video? >> It's not on. >> It's not on. >> No. >> Okay. >> Yeah. He's had them unplugged. She's got a new set of cameras sitting there that he hasn't heard of yet. >> Okay. >> Um would you be okay if I came inside and check look around the house? >> Um I guess there. Um you're just looking >> I just want to take a look around the house. See if anything seems out of place. If there's anything I can see I can kind of put together something that may have happened because you weren't here. Who's to know if someone in came inside the house and did something to get them out? Okay. >> Would that be okay? >> Yes. You're just looking for that. >> Yeah. I'm I'm not just want to try and corroborate something. >> Police enter the home and Star has every reason to be worried because in the small home in the back bedroom is where she took her husband's life by shooting him as he lay in bed sometimes several days earlier. By the time she invites police inside, however, she's already swapped the sheets and tidied up. But cleaning a crime scene completely isn't easy for the smartest of people and Star is well definitely not that at the time. However, the officer has no choice but to thank her for her time and dig for what he needs to get a search warrant. >> Well, again, I don't have any other questions. >> Um, any questions for me right now? >> Um, do you have a card? >> Yeah. So, I did speak with my lieutenant and based on and based on the information, there's not enough to want to do a ping on the phone and being that his phone is off, we're probably not going to get any hits on it. Um, but we also do not have enough to report him as missing. So what we what we can do what I will do >> is send send the telet type out a message out to all surrounding counties to be on the lookout check welfare of Richard Rick Bourke and they'll call us. I'll include your phone number in there too. I'll email my co-workers too with your phone number should so that if Oaklair County called and said hey he's up here he's fine then my partners will know to give you a call. So, um, >> you don't know. I I have no idea. This isn't the first incident like this. It's like my lieutenant said, it's peculiar. This is definitely weird, but we still there's not enough to report him as missing. And it's the same it's the same situation >> for a while. Can't that change though? He doesn't >> know because that people that guy did a year later. >> He's I mean he he's an adult. He's not diagnosed with anything. He's not on any medications that he has to have. >> He said that he had a weapon. >> It it might change some, but he's still an adult and adults can adults can straight up leave and go anywhere at any time. >> But there's more with it to meet that criteria for it. And it's always different in any situation. >> Just come back and tell me if I'm okay. Don't come back because did something for myself. >> No. And that's way overthinking. >> No, that's that's way overthinking. It's way overthinking. >> You don't have to think like that right now. Obviously, it runs through everybody's mind in any situation like this. I get it. [snorts] >> He was my gift from God. >> Everything was so dark. I lost my smiling back. He literally is my heart and my smile. >> I get it. It comes to when I married him to everybody on this planet on heaven or earth or any other planet in this life or any other and I'm not doubting that at all and I get it. I do completely understand. I do. >> He was my gift from God. >> Past tense. Undeniably, the officer catches it too, but he tries to comfort Star, hoping she'll slip up again. Some people react to stuff differently. If someone has to get away for a little while before something happens, that's not uncommon. That happens more frequently than anybody even thinks. >> So when he does that, then that's him getting away. Not him not loving you, it's him getting away. >> It's not him not loving you. It's him. If he's got to separate himself from something that's going to be tough for him, you're going to be going to prison. That's tough. If you're going to be gone for a while, it's going to be tough on them. It'll be tough on anybody in in your guys' situation. If you're married to someone and they got to go away, you don't have any other choice. It's tough. And some people react that differently. Everybody reacts differently to every situation. And you can never you you never know how someone's going to react to something. It hurts so bad. Is there somebody I can help and talk to? Because it just hurts. >> After leaving, Star probably felt on top of the world. In her mind, she had outsmarted a police officer. She got him to comfort her. He left quickly and he didn't find anything while searching the house. What Star doesn't know is just moments after the officer left, he had her trapped. Because while Star didn't crack immediately, her son did. And when police called him and put the pressure on, he squealled immediately, which meant the very next day, police took her into custody. After sitting in jail for several hours, Star begs to speak with detectives. At this point, she knows that her son has talked to the police, and she believes he's taken the blame for what happened. So, putting on the best mama bear energy she can muster, she begs to speak with detectives so she can take the blame instead. Though, the blame for what? She's not exactly sure. She's really hoping her son told the cover story she had planned, that they found Richard dead and decided to just dispose of his body at home. Unfortunately for her, that's not what her son told police. So, >> you remember special agent Frederick, right? >> And you don't uh you don't care if I shut this door, do you? >> No. >> Okay. >> Button. It's all the button that's outside the the uh >> so they can know we're in here. >> Yeah. >> So, it's being recorded. >> So, it's our understanding that you had written a a note or something to jail staff or some I don't know if it was Cat and Rich or somebody else, but saying that he wanted to talk to us. Is that the case? >> Yes. >> All right. So, >> whatever my son said, I did it. >> Okay. Well, before we get any further here, I like I like I told you before, I'm going to read your Miranda rights. So, >> you have the right to remain silent. >> Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. >> Yes. >> You have the right to talk to an attorney and have your attorney present with you while you are being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you before questioning if you wish. And you can decide at any time to exercise these rights and not answer any questions or make any statements. I wanted an attorney, but whatever my son says he did, I did. >> Okay. >> Okay. I'll let you finish reading. Sorry. >> Well, >> there's a couple things that we have to clarify then, okay? Because you put that letter out there and you wanted to talk to us again. >> Just hear me out on it, okay? >> And because there's [clears throat] rules that we have to follow, okay? >> And if you say you want an attorney, then we can't talk to you. But >> I don't want >> Okay. So, I don't want to pressure you or anything because you need to decide this on your own. But if you want to talk to us and we can go forward, then we can do that. But it's got to be your decision to do that. >> Okay. >> Whatever said he did, I did. >> Police finally managed to read through the Miranda rightites after Star interrupts them another two times saying the same thing. >> Whatever he said he did, I did. >> What a martyr. Well, until police address her with what her son has actually said she did. Then she's not quite as keen to take the bullet for him. >> Okay. I did. >> All right. So, there's We're going to back it up quite a bit. Okay. Because uh obviously, like I told you last time that we met, we've we've talked to a lot of people. We've searched your house, as you know. We searched his backyard. We searched through the barrels. We searched everything. Okay. Um, so, um, what I'm going to ask for you is just to be honest with us and if you don't >> I do whatever it is. >> Okay, hold on. If if I ask you a question and you don't understand it or if you don't want to answer it, just please just tell me that you don't understand or you don't want to answer it. >> But she said that and that makes me look guilty. >> It does not. I It It does not. I'm just asking you I'll ask you very direct questions and if you don't like the question just say I'd like to not answer that and go on to the next question. Okay. But as you know as I just told you we talked to a lot of people. We've done a lot of searching. We did a lot of uh we found a lot of stuff. Okay. So this is where we know a lot of the answers to the questions we may be asking you. But there's one a couple things that I don't know and there the why might be there. Okay, the why is one that I don't really know. And as we as we started doing this investigation, there was fragments of the investigation that we were able to collect and be able and what I want to do is talk to you about everything that transpired on Tuesday and then walk us through what happened. [clears throat] Okay? because it's my understanding and I [clears throat] don't know if this is true or not, but you can tell me um I I shouldn't say it like that. I believe this is fairly accurate because based on what we've been told that there was a gun involved and there was a shot. And if that's the case, I want you to walk us through what transpired, what took place, and then we'll go from there. Okay. So, what happened on Tuesday? Like you before you told me that at about 6:30 in the morning, got coffee ready and uh Rick, right, Rick? >> Rick. >> So, and then Rick was still laying in bed and you had had a cup of coffee for him and he only had one sip and then you ended up leaving at 650. So, what walk me through Tuesday? What happened on Tuesday? >> I got my son today. >> Okay, let me ask I'll I'll ask you more pointed questions. Did you end up shooting Rick? >> You didn't shoot him? >> No. >> Okay. Why would your son say that you shot him? >> He shot? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Okay. Did you shoot him or is that not true? That's not true. Okay. Did you kill Rick? Okay. You didn't kill Rick. No. >> Okay. Again, I'm I'm going to go back to I would like you to be honest with us. >> I am. >> Okay. >> I'm looking you me right in the eye. I did not kill my husband. >> Okay. Rick died of natural causes. >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> Got off the cross real quick, didn't she? Star's son told police that she came to him in a panic, revealing that she had shot Richard and she needed help disposing of his body immediately. Her son along with four other people helped her. First by burning the remains in the backyard, then by dumping it on the side of a rural highway. [music] It's soon after police have revealed her son's confession to her when she gets a call from him right in the middle of him panicking about police issuing a search warrant on the home they share. come to the door with their hands up and come out and accept in instructions. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department, we have a search warrant for this house and the property. I need everyone inside the house to come to the door and accept instructions. >> Come back this way. >> Keep your hands up. Keep your hands up. Keep coming back. Keep coming back. >> I got a guy from the police department. >> I need you to face way. Face away. Okay. Come back this way. Come back this way. Come back this way. You have any weapons on you? >> No, I'm not sure. >> Oh crap. >> All right. Just come back this way. >> Are you still on the phone with them? >> No. >> No. Okay. I put put you in handcuffs. All right. >> Um >> how many people are in the house? Four. >> Four. >> For including you or >> what's that? >> Can you tell me what this is about? >> It's a We have a search warrant. >> I said I'd never get arrested. >> Hold on one second. Inside. [music] Her son Jeffrey was panicking and he chose the worst possible time to call his mother about it. Now Star's in trouble. Not only has she learned that her son already told police the truth, but she's learning they're at her home about to discover all the evidence she believed would never be found. And she reacts about as well as you'd expect. >> Or my son is calling >> anything like that. Um, yeah, you can you can take it right now. That's fine. >> What? the house. >> Okay. Okay. Okay. Here. I'm hold. >> Okay. Jeffrey. >> Okay. Jeffrey, >> why don't you just put on speaker? >> Why >> put my speaker phone? Then we can >> Jeffrey, we can all talk to him. Okay. Anybody can help. >> Just put your phone on. Get your phone. >> Okay, Jeffrey. Hold on. What? >> Okay, Jeffrey. I don't know. Okay. Hold on. Here. Okay. Okay. Jeffrey, make sure. Okay. I need to go. >> Okay. Let me see. I'll talk to you. >> Please. Can I go? I'm not a nervous. Please, can I go? >> No. Right now, we're going to just take your phone right now. >> Okay. Can I go? I need your phone. >> Please put on the speaker. Can I please put on a speaker? >> Police confiscate her phone. And back at home, eventually Jeffrey and his friends do the right thing with a bit more convincing, of course. >> The Jackson County Sheriff's Department. We have a search warrant for this home and the property. Everyone inside the house needs to come to the door and comply with instructions. Failure to comply could constitute commission of a crime. You could be arrested. Come out of the house to the door. This is the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. They have a search warrant. >> Never get arrested. >> Hold on one second. >> Police are nervous to approach the door at this point. Despite Star's son saying there are no weapons in the home, they know that's not true because her son already confessed that Star used a gun to shoot Richard. But desperate to close down the scene fast, police dare to approach and order everyone out. Sheriff's department. Sheriff's office, come out now with your hands empty. COME OUT WITH YOUR [screaming] HANDS. >> SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, we have a search warrant. Need you to come out >> to the left. >> Come out now. Hands on top of your head. >> Come out now with your hands on top of your head. >> SHOW YOUR HANDS. Show them your hands. >> You got contact. >> Two coming out. >> Sheriff's office. Keep your hands up. >> Both hands on top of your heads. Come out slowly. >> Yep. One at a time. We're going to get somebody to receive them. >> One at a time. >> One at a time. >> Come on out. >> Face away. Face away. >> Hands on top of your head. >> Slowly come to the door. Put your hands up. >> Keep stepping out. Keep stepping out. Keep stepping out. Turn around. >> Face away. Face away. >> Walk it backwards. >> Anybody else in there? >> Girl in the pink. Put your hands up. Put them on top of your head. >> Anybody else in there? >> Come to us slowly. >> Okay, there's two more in there. >> Stay right there. Turn away from us. >> Okay, back up. >> Okay, here. Wait. Right here. You just want to take spots switch real carefully. Step about 2 ft down. Step out with your hand. >> We have a search warrant for the property. We can explain later. >> Hey. Mine's a lot pass. >> We're going this way. She knows. >> Back in the interrogation room, things are getting worse for Star by the minute because she knows it's only a matter of time before police find [music] what she's tried to hide. >> So, let me ask you this then. Um, there's a couple things that >> And I'm tired of it. >> Do you guys Do you guys throw away your garbage? >> Yes. >> And does do you have garbage pickups? >> No. Um, do you burn your trash? >> Mhm. >> Where do you typically burn your trash? >> In a burnout. >> In a burn barrel. Okay. Uh, is that normal? Like if you don't have scheduled garbage pickup? >> No. Is it mine again? >> I think so. >> And I see >> it says Nick Bro. >> Oh, >> so you don't don't have garbage service up the house. You don't go do you go take your stuff to the dump at all? >> Um, >> I guess is like part of your township. Do you guys have it down? >> No. >> Okay. Um, burn burning the stuff in a burn barrel. >> I actually I don't know if we if it's prior. I Rick handles all that, so I don't deal with that. >> Okay. Do you have like garbage cans that like are >> Yes. >> like purchase at a store or provided to you by a garbage company? Do you know? >> I don't see you know what he's talking about. Like you see those wheeled uh >> we don't have those. >> You don't have those. You buy like the the barrels the 40 gallon barrels or whatever that you get at like Ace Hardware. They might sell them at Walmart. >> Um he bought from some guy who pays 10. I don't Yeah. >> Okay. >> Okay. So you burn all the garbage at at the house >> in a burn barrel. >> Yeah. >> Do you um do you guys have like bonfires at your house at all? >> Yes. >> Okay. When was your last bonfire that you had at the house? Um, uh, I think, uh, Wednesday burned my Christmas tree. >> Wednesday burns your Christmas tree. >> Yes, that sounds funny, but I had >> No, I did because I do that. I do the same thing with mine. >> Yeah, so do I. >> I burn my Christmas tree and they go up like that. It's just a It's um >> so the main portion of it just the needles that go really fast. >> Um anybody there with you at that time when you bring the Christmas tree or anybody home or >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> Okay. See, this is the kind of question that I'm not getting where this has to do. >> Oh, because because uh your husband >> who knows who's there. Was there a fire in your backyard on Wednesday? >> I think so. Yes. >> Okay. I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you a little bit about my background. Okay. >> Right. >> Um I worked in the arson bureau for several years. >> Okay. >> And I'm able to locate and identify many were uh damaged as a result of fire. Okay. So, were you outside tending to this fire on Wednesday? >> Just I just I'm just looking for honesty. Sorry. I mean, we're we're at this juncture. >> No, but I didn't kill him. >> Okay. Who killed him then? I don't know. >> You don't know or you don't want to tell us? >> I don't know. >> Okay. >> You want to know how much I love my husband? >> I curled up in that bed with him for 24 hours. I'm not kidding. He gave my whole world and everything I said is true. I have been as honest as it possibly to try to find out who did it. But I I didn't want them to take I didn't want to take him. Rick and I, we had this joke that if something happened to him and this I could wear second Bible, too. I would I ask where any sisters are from. If he died, I want to cry over him until we until we figured out how to fix him. I curled up in the deck with him. So why was in the backyard >> you start? >> It was It wasn't. I was still curling up again. >> Okay. Was that Tuesday morning? You could smell smell or was it Wednesday? >> Wednesday. >> Okay. And then >> but I still crew up next to him. >> Okay. >> I held him and I literally my plan was just >> That's the problem right there. This lie is Star's best plan. And that lie is unbelievably that her husband and she agreed they would essentially keep each other's bodies after they passed until they could bring the other back to life, which of course is crazy. >> Is it true that you went and asked your son, his fiance to help get rid of the body? >> No. Okay. I don't know what that part >> or to or to help him help help you. I don't know for sure on that. >> Okay. >> Uh I I don't >> I'm not lying. I don't I don't >> And if you don't recall, you don't recall. That's okay. >> I don't. >> Okay. >> But he didn't do He had nothing to do with it. He didn't. >> So, let let me ask you this. I'm I'm going to tell you exactly what your son and his fiance told us. And what we learned from uh Chuck and and other people is um is it accurate that you gave Chuck and what's her name? >> Kathy. >> Kathy. Thank you. Chuck and Kathy a gun to get rid of. >> Well, they actually took some gun to get rid of. I didn't want them to. >> Okay. >> I But it is accurate. There was a gun that they had that they took. >> They took Yeah. >> and got rid of. >> Yeah. >> Okay. You didn't tell him to get rid of it. >> No, I didn't tell him to. I didn't. Yeah, I didn't ask him to. I didn't tell him to. Um, he started telling me what to do. >> Chuck did. >> Yeah. He came in and started telling me what to do and he just assumed that I killed Rick. He started telling me that I don't remember the story. It didn't make any sense. He Yeah. what he wanted me to do. >> Okay. And is it accurate that >> they wanted me to leave and they wanted me in fact they talked me into leaving. They wanted me to put the flame on. Yeah. And I'm like no, I want to go back. >> Who helped you move uh Rick from the bedroom to outside to the backyard? >> No, I I didn't. >> You did it yourself through the uh your bedroom door there. >> Okay. Um how much Let me ask you this. Um so as a result of uh I'm I'm going to try to try to simplify this as much as I can. Uh when fire attack um when fire damage and there's also other things that are um other materials in that fire like blankets, clothing, that kind of stuff. They're kind of in in the world of fire, they call them fuels, okay? And uh not what we think of fuels like we think of fuels like as in diesel fuel or gasoline or lighter fluid. >> I can't burn him. >> Okay. >> I didn't burn him. >> Okay. And I'm I'm being blunt with you and being very honest with you. Okay. I spent all day yesterday doing that along with a bunch of team and I have identified as human remains through an anthropologist that I work with. Okay. >> And they're Rick. >> DNA will prove that it's going to be Rick. Plus, his glasses were there that you described. >> There's some other medical uh devices that Rick had in his >> Yeah. Yeah. >> that were >> his shoulder >> that were located as well. So, that will help. And he had a back surgery, right? >> Yep. >> Yeah. So that stuff does not get consumed in the fire that survives. >> At the scene, police found blood evidence showing that Richard was indeed shot and killed in the bedroom. In the fire pit, they found even more evidence. Metal hardware and even his glasses left behind. And the reason why he was killed? Well, according to Star, because she found out Richard cheated on her. If that is true, which we have no proof to support, then there is another option. Divorce, which seems to be lost on every single person we cover, but especially on professional victim Star. >> So, I'm asking you, Star, >> so you know he wasn't shot. >> Well, why would you why would your son tell us that you came to the room and said like, "Oh, [ __ ] Oh, [ __ ] Help me out. I I I just shot him." >> You are you saying your son's a liar? >> No. is is are you saying that statement is accurate from your son that he told us that >> I'm saying I told you already whatever he said I I did >> are okay answer that question though please uh not with a roundabout answer but are you is that accurate that you you told your son that you shot Rick >> if he said that yes >> okay is do you remember telling your son >> no I don't >> that at all okay >> no but if he said it I did and start. I'm not I'm not saying that you intention like you wanted. >> I don't know. See, you get like this and that's when you confuse me. I >> I'm being >> my head is all you're making my head all confused. >> I'm being very direct with with the question. Not I'm not trying to confuse you at all. >> You are though >> because I say something and then you say something and then now I'm confused on what is real and what's not. Okay. >> All I'm looking for is the truth. That's all I'm asking for. >> If he said I said that, then I did. >> Okay. Did you shoot Rick? >> No, I didn't. >> Okay. You didn't shoot him? >> No. >> Okay. Why is there blood in the bed? Why was there blood on the mattress? >> Was Rick bleeding when you discovered him dead and he started stinking? Okay. Where was he bleeding from? >> I didn't look. I didn't want to know. >> Okay. Was his face down at the foot end of the bed or was his face at the head of the bed? >> The head. >> Okay. And then did you move Rick to the foot end of the bed? Like where his head would be over towards the foot end? >> Okay. How where was the blood coming from? Was it the head port or was it the >> I don't know. All I know. >> Did you see blood? >> No, >> you didn't see blood. >> I saw his face was purple and um and I I curled up in front of him. >> Okay. Did you have uh new bedding purchased? New sheets? >> No new sheets? No. >> No new sheets? >> New bedding? >> Um I needed another comforter because it was cold. >> Okay. Did your son go to Walmart? >> Yes. A comforter? Yes. >> Did you go to Qu? >> I don't know if you're [clears throat] purchase diesel fuel. I don't know where diesel is. >> Okay. Did you Did your son go and purchase diesel fuel? I don't >> Would that be accurate if he told us it? >> I don't. If he said that, I already told you this. If he said it, yes. You're [clears throat] asking me to confirm what he did. At that point, I was upset about what was going on. I don't know >> what was going on. Why were you upset? >> Because my husband is my home world. >> Okay. And he's no longer in your world. >> No. Can we get a hold of my attorney so I can get this because I'd like to talk to him and I'd like to get this done. I don't want to Is there any way to get a hold of him so we can get this >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> ASAP. So I want to >> Yes. >> I want to talk to you guys. I want to >> Yeah. And it's your constitutional right to have your >> I know. But what do you understand what I'm saying? I'm I'm not I don't want to postpone. I want to Can we get a hold of him? And >> Yeah. You know what? We'll we'll actually work on finding your attorney's number. >> What's your attorney's name? >> Because I want I want this done just as much as you. >> Yeah. I It would be very helpful, especially for Rick's family, cuz obviously his mom and dad want to know, and his sister wants to know, and [clears throat] it's It's sad all around. >> Yeah.
