Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, a routine speeding stop in Kentucky quickly became more complicated after the driver appeared to provide identification that did not match who he really was. As officers worked to confirm his identity, the suspect suddenly bolted from the stop and allegedly began tossing suspected narcotics from the vehicle. >> Look, man. And the case expanded far beyond the original speeding violation as evidence collected during the incident became part of the criminal investigation. May 4th, 2022, officers assigned to a multi- agency narcotics investigation approached a vehicle that had pulled into a Houston gas station as part of an ongoing operation. 23-year-old Jimmy Brian was asked to step outside, but investigators say he instead pulled out a pistol and opened fire at the officers. >> You don't have the ID on >> here. Friday, January 5th, 2024, what began as a stop for a missing license plate became one of the most widely discussed roadside incidents in Oklahoma. 16-year-old Mason Treat was still speaking with Canadian County Deputy Jose Taoua Mendoza when a pickup truck slammed into the stopped vehicles. his vehicle from that crash on Friday morning. The Canadian County Sheriff telling me it was the actions of his deputy during an ordinary traffic stop that probably saved his life. >> It was a very violent impact, very violent. So, he was at the passenger side of the vehicle at the front window talking to the driver through the window and then bam, got hit. So, um there's no doubt in any of our minds if he would have done a driver's side approach on that traffic stop, he wouldn't be with us today. Canadian County Sheriff Chris West says his deputy, Josea Mendoza, was nearly killed after a pickup sideswiped his cruiser and hit a car Mendoza had pulled over. This all happened on I40 near Gar Brooks Boulevard on Friday morning. The deputy has several broken bones and is still recovering in an Oklahoma City hospital. >> He's doing pretty good. Uh, of course, he's in serious condition. He's got uh a pretty nasty break to his ankle and to his elbow. So, I was over at the hospital earlier today and they were taking him back for surgery. So, we're still praying for him. Senate President Prom Grey Treat's office confirming the prom's 16-year-old son was the driver who had been pulled over. His son Mason suffered life-threatening injuries, but the prom saying he too is recovering. He credited first responders and medical staff with saving Mason. >> Okay, I tell you what. I was going to give you a written warning for the through the license plate. >> I'm not even going to do that. I don't want nothing to show. Hey, you okay? Is it Canadian County or Oklahoma? Had County. Both Mason Treat and Deputy Joseé Tayahua Mendoza suffered serious injuries and required extensive medical treatment while investigators later determined the pickup driver was fatigued rather than impaired. The incident eventually led to a civil lawsuit filed by former Oklahoma Senate President Prom Greg Treat while the Mason Treat Act later became law to reduce the amount of time newly purchased vehicles travel without permanent license plates. On June 24th, 2022, an Arkansas State Police trooper noticed a silver BMW weaving through traffic at 86 m an hour in a 65 mph zone.
