On February 12th, 2026, Arkansas State Police Legend Trooper Jacob Bird stepped into a different role, training the next generation while intercepting a reckless pursuit tied to Little Rock police. Instead of showing off for the rookie beside him, Bird calmly coached every move through the chaos, turning a dangerous chase into a rolling classroom at high speed. >> We take primary. Just stay calm. Listen to me. I'm going to put you through it. Okay, slow down for this bridge. Slow down. Slow down. It's messing. It's going to be a little rough. Watch the boats. You're clear. I got my I got something in my body. I got shot. last year. Y >> the pursuit came to a stop with officers pulling the driver from the vehicle. While one suspect claimed he had been shot previously in the year, Trooper Bird's measured instructions and steady control during the incident only added to the legend surrounding one of Arkansas State Police's most recognizable pursuit specialists. On October 6th, 2022, Cabat officers recognized a maroon Chevy Tahoe connected to an earlier escape attempt and decided this time the driver was not slipping away again. The situation escalated instantly outside of Valero station when the suspect sped off while officer Starks was still hanging on to the passenger door. >> How you doing, sir? Don't you do it. DON'T YOU DO IT. >> GO. Hey sir, sir. 48 Kevin Keep in mind 430 is shut down. >> All right, this space coast road exit one. Space coast road exit one. Check exit one. Mallerie Lawson eventually landed in custody after officers discovered he had an active felony warrant and a suspended license. Suspected marijuana was also found in his possession. Investigators hit Lawson with charges including aggravated assault felony fleeing reckless driving possession of a controlled substance and furnishing prohibited articles after the pursuit left officer Starks injured but medically cleared. July 17th, 2023 brought another Arkansas pursuit. This one ending with a driver refusing commands even after the chase had already run out of road. The suspect's non-stop arguing only made the scene more chaotic as troopers wrestled him into custody beside the battered vehicle. >> I'm 67 South at Curtis southbound going towards G. Are we like y'all pray? Why y'all Why y'all? >> After the arrest, the driver continued shouting accusations at troopers while officers worked to secure the scene and restore order. The confrontation ended with the suspect detained after resisting commands during the stop, adding even more tension to a pursuit that had already pushed everyone's patience to the limit. On July 8th, 2022, Texas authorities chased a red Hyundai Elantre toward the Arkansas state line after bundles of suspicious white powder started flying out of the car windows. Once the pursuit crossed into Arkansas, troopers quickly realized the driver had no intention of slowing down for anybody. >> Another lane. We just slow this traffic down. >> 21. We're going to slow traffic down for you. Hang on. Hang on, man. Hang on. Go ahead and call 21. We're clear to the next. Slow roll down >> over there. Draw that string all the way out over here. [snorts] >> Lariel Pope and passenger Kendrick Bailey were both taken to the Hemstead County Jail after the chase finally unraveled off the interstate. Pope was charged with felony fleeing aggravated assault and multiple drug offenses, while Bailey also faced controlled substance charges after marijuana and suspected ecstasy were recovered from the vehicle. August 8th, 2023 started with reports of a man riding a bicycle through interstate traffic. Like the laws of physics were merely optional suggestions. Are you wanted? >> No. >> Then why are you running? >> I got a little I don't know, but they run me for no warrant, bro. All right. >> Well, you're going to get seen by an ambulance. Once they're done with you, you're going to jail. >> Joseph Thomas Smith survived the incident and was treated by medical personnel before heading straight to jail. Investigators later confirmed he had a suspended license and possible warrants. While troopers made it very clear they were tired of dealing with the same reckless behavior week after week. On August 10th, 2023, Trooper Ibara spotted two vehicles racing well above 100 mph. But the Chrysler 200 quickly separated itself from the pack for all the wrong reasons. Even after one intervention forced the car into a ditch, the driver somehow managed to jump back onto the interstate and continue running. I just got two racing. You're staying right there till someone rise. >> I'm being bad though. >> Yeah, that's on you. >> I know. I'm sorry. >> I'm just stand right here. It's hot in here. I'm sorry. Daniel Robert O'Connor was found standing inside the rolled vehicle with visible facial injuries after the second intervention sent the Chrysler flipping into the woods. Troopers later discovered the car was stolen and loaded with multiple firearms, leading to charges including theft by receiving felony fleeing involving serious physical injury, reckless driving with injury, fictitious tags, and racing on a public highway. On February 1st, 2023, an Arkansas trooper noticed a Honda Accord carrying a suspended registration while icy roads still covered parts of Fort Smith. The driver initially acted like a normal traffic stop was coming, then suddenly turned the morning commute into a dangerous winter pursuit. Just the final stop be Rogers to the garage. on Rogers. It crossed O and kept going north subdivision. Troopers eventually called off the chase after the suspect blasted through intersections and ignored worsening ice patches across the roadway. Although the Honda escaped that morning, the driver's reckless decisions and fictitious registration ensured investigators already had plenty waiting for them afterward. August 17th, 2023 turned into a stubborn standoff after a stolen Chevy Silverado rolled into the trees and its driver still refused to come out. Even with shattered glass and repeated commands from troopers, the suspect stayed planted inside the wrecked truck as if ignoring police might somehow reset the situation. get. >> Okay, you're good. Alex Whitaker was eventually pulled from the Silverado and taken into custody after officers used OC spray and physically removed her from the vehicle. The pursuit ended without further incident once Little Rock police secured the suspect and prepared the stolen pickup for towing and investigation. On April 18th, 2024, trooper Jacob Graham clocked a red hatchback flying down Highway 412 at 100 mph before the driver suddenly veered through a fence and into a pasture. The situation became even stranger moments later when the fleeing suspect was discovered completely nude, except for a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. 28's going to be Adam the 68 Mary has his hazards on. [screaming] >> No. No. Stop. I'M PLEASE. PLEASE. NO. I'M NOT TALKING. PLEASE. I DON'T LOOK AT MY HEAD. NO, NO. I don't. >> Huh? >> Huh? >> Great. >> Glenna Fleetwood was eventually transported to the Madison County Jail after resisting arrest, slipping out of handcuffs inside the patrol unit, and leaving troopers with one unforgettable cleanup job. She faced charges including felony fleeing, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, speeding, and obstructing governmental operations after the bizarre pastor chase finally came to an end. On July 25th, 2023, Trooper Carrie Perimeter spotted a blue Mazda 3 driving without a license plate and attempted a simple traffic stop along Highway 165. The driver instead cruised through a gas station parking lot and accelerated away while casually waving out the window like he was leaving a parade route. Watch secondary. Get your feet in there. >> No. Sit down right here. >> I'll hand it to you. What? Can you adjust these? Put your back towards me. Both of them. I'm not trying to escape or anything. You Hey, I want to put my wrist around. >> Mark Huff was taken into custody without further incident and later transported to Spring Hill Baptist Hospital before heading to the Palaski County Detention Center. Troopers also located four glass smoking devices inside the Mazda, leading to charges including felony fleeing possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, and operating a vehicle without insurance or tags. July 13th, 2023 became another short-lived pursuit after Little Rock police called Arkansas State Police for backup on a fleeing driver. Trooper Shoemate wasted very little time catching up and bringing the chase to an abrupt stop before the suspect could turn city streets into something far worse. Just went through MLK. What started as a pursuit led by Little Rock police ended with Arkansas State Police wrapping things up in remarkably fast fashion, leaving the suspect face down on the pavement instead of disappearing into traffic. On August 26th, 2023, Sergeant Steven Briggs noticed a Ford Mustang drifting off the roadway in Palaski County and decided the driver needed a closer conversation. Instead of pulling over normally, the Mustang accelerated through a residential neighborhood. While the smell of marijuana would later explain at least part of the bad decision-making anymore. It was almost 0 46 last night. Hey, put youring hands up. Put your [ __ ] hands up. Turn the car off. >> Get [ __ ] >> Turn the car off. Roll the window down. Roll the window down. Hands up. I ain't got nothing longer, bro. >> Stop, man. >> Oh [ __ ] >> No, we made it last. >> No. Perry Ford ended up in the Palaski County Jail after troopers discovered suspected marijuana and a digital scale inside the Mustang. He was charged with felony fleeing possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, careless driving, and failure to provide proof of insurance. May 20th, 2022 featured a silver Volvo S60 that managed to slip away from one Arkansas trooper before another unit spotted the same car again moments later. The driver kept gambling on narrow roads and risky passes until his luck finally ran out beside an 18-wheeler. Hey Harrison, he's taking off. Going southbound. >> This darn car 13. I was pulling off. I thought you were stopping the truck. I pulled in behind you. >> I thought I just stopped in the truck. >> Okay. All right. >> The suspect identified as Brian was taken into custody after the Volvo crashed into a ditch and deployed its airbags during the second pursuit attempt. Troopers secured the scene, searched the damaged vehicle and continued investigating why the driver ignored repeated attempts to stop in the first place. On July 28th, 2023, North Little Rock police requested help after a high-speed pursuit began bouncing between agencies around the city. Trooper Ellison quickly took control of the chase and forced the suspect into a desperate sprint toward the woods instead of an open highway. >> Airport Road. If you get stupid, you're me. Somebody bring us a flashlight. The foot chase did not last long once officers warned the suspect that a police dog was closing in behind him. Troopers eventually dragged the exhausted runner out of the brush and into custody near College Station Elementary after the multi- agency pursuit came crashing to a halt. August 22nd, 2023 began with an Arkansas State Police examiner calling in a motorcycle rider who looked determined to set a land speed record on Highway 70. When troopers confirmed the Yamaha weaving through traffic at nearly 100 mph, the rider responded by doubling down and pushing the bike to 140 mph. He's going to be making purple. Get off now. >> About 10 minutes maybe depending on traffic. Put >> your hands right here. >> Hands right there. Spread your feet apart. Spread. You listen to me. You understand? You >> call anybody his teacher or mom or dad. >> All right. >> Tell them they didn't teach you right growing up. Tanner Templeton eventually pulled over after several miles and admitted he accelerated because he saw the trooper coming. Investigators later discovered the Yamaha lacked registration and insurance. While Templeton also did not have a motorcycle endorsement or an Arkansas driver's license despite living in the state for nearly a year. On August 2nd, 2023, a Dodge Durango turned a speeding stop into a dangerous interstate sprint after the driver attempted to loop back toward Memphis at more than 100 mph. Traffic on Interstate 40 became part of the problem when the SUV started squeezing between vehicles and forcing drivers onto the shoulder. RC point. >> Thank you. Drop right there. Drop to your knees. Put your hands on your head. >> The Durango overturned after striking a concrete wall, but all occupants were taken into custody without further incident once the chaos stopped spinning. Investigators prepared charges including felony fleeing, reckless driving, speeding, improper passing, improper lane usage, and following too closely after the interstate pursuit ended upside down. December 9th, 2022 started with a suspicious GMC Yukon carrying fictitious tags and a driver who appeared far more nervous than the traffic stop required. Things became even more awkward when the driver admitted the tags belonged to his wife. While the passenger's identity immediately raised additional questions for the trooper enforcement 1024 grand and north 12th. I'll be out with a GMC Yukon. It's a fictitious tag. Arkansas.
