Hello everyone. My name is Dan Butler. I'm the executive assistant chief for the Mesa Police Department. I'm here today because I want to clarify some information regarding the Mesa Police Department's involvement with immigration enforcement. I want to talk a little bit about the Mesa Police Department's involvement with a process called 287G. You've probably heard about it in the news recently. Since 2009, the Mesa Police Department has been involved with the process of the 287G, but we have the jail enforcement model. This means we do not go out into the community and actively search for people based on immigration status. But what it does mean is if someone is arrested, they are taken to the holding facility and they are asked their immigration status. if they report back to the Mesa Police Department that they are in the country illegally, we have an obligation to notify ICE on that topic. Again, we do not actively go out into the community looking for people simply based on their immigration status. Next, I want to talk to you about an ICE warrant. It is standard practice for a Mesa police officer when they come in contact with an individual, whether it be on a traffic stop or during a criminal offense, to do a criminal justice background check or a check for warrants. Uh these warrants can be in a state database or a national database. Uh if the individual who the police officer is contacting has an active ICE warrant, it is protocol and practice to contact the agency, in this case it would be ICE, and notify them that we have an individual detained with an active warrant. After that, it is up to ICE to make a determination if they want to respond to the scene to take the individual with the active warrant into custody or not. The Mesa Police Department doesn't have any further involvement with that process. We are here at the Mesa Police Department to serve and protect our community, all members of our community, and as a practice, we do not ask victims or witnesses of crime their immigration status. victim. department. Bye.
