hello I'm detective Brandy Myers with the Mesa Police Department's media relations unit this critical incident Community briefing is intended to provide you with information about an officer involved shooting that occurred in Mesa we will share information related to this case to help you understand details based on the present facts all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law the images and language in this video may be disturbing viewer discretion is advised on February 3rd 2025 just before 9:30 in the morning a woman called 911 to report a possible suicide 911 emergency hi I'm I'm the police and a right now what's your address um hold on I'm sorry okay take a deep breath for me I think my step that shot itself you Ste outed making suicidal statements that you're aware of or yes like tell my mom this isn't the first time that this has happened officers responded to the apartment located at 432 South 32nd Street where they spoke with the woman he's the only one in there yeah he's the only one in there and you said he had a gun yes okay what kind of gun I like a handgun I haven't like really seen it okay and did you did you hear what happened I like he was yelling he was banging and then I heard a boom and then that was it and then I Tred to knock on the door and he didn't answer the woman explains further what happened last night to another officer last night he they were arguing about something something stupid he came out of the room he's yelling and he shot the gun he ran downstairs and he talked with my mom and like held the gun up to her head officers surround the apartment and a negotiator tries to contact 39-year-old Ricky Robertson Jr by phone well I don't have to talk I have no I I have no obligation to you if you want to come and see me come to the front door you one man by yourself we'll have a conversation but I don't have to talk to you brother better get your man out of here get your man out on here Robertson Jr starts to yell from his apartment and walks outside put your hands on top of your head and put your hands on top of your head do it now and face away from us hands on top of your head interlace your fingers and face away do it now hands on top of your head do it nower ball hands on your head face away hands on top of your head do not go back inside officers continue to speak with Robertson Jr as he exits and re-enters his apartment he then fires a handgun in the direction of officers and an officer returns fire should see that we have to deploy [Applause] down down hey you want to bound 7 hey do you guys want to bound or no you want me to do Focus or no start bounding backwards to that F-150 start bounding start bounding start bounding go ahead go hey down down down moving behind BL behind theine block behind the engine block after some time Robertson Jr walks out of his apartment and officers shoot less lethal 40 mm and bean bag rounds at him come on man it doesn't have to go this way it doesn't have come on out he's pulling down his pant he's got no weapons hey come out to us come on hands up do it now come on don't do this in front of your daughter come on get down get down on the ground Robertson Jr was taken into custody by Gilbert SWAT and booked into jail for two counts of aggravated assault and for being a prohibited possessor there were no injuries to officers or to Robertson Jr as a result of the gunfire this officer involved shooting is being investigated by the temp Police Department as part of the East Valley critical incident Response Team EV sir includes members from Apache Junction chanler Gilbert Mesa Paradise Valley Queen Creek Scottdale and Tempe police departments eer will provide greater transparency and accountability because agencies involved in the critical Force incident will not be directly involved in the criminal investigation thank you for taking the time to watch this critical incident Community briefing
