I'm Commander Daravan with the Mesa Police Department and I oversee the school resource officer unit. We're here today to emphasize the seriousness of school threats and the responsibility of parents, students, and the community to act. All threats are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. Even if it's meant as a joke, serious consequences may follow. Parents and guardians, you're encouraged to talk to your kids about the consequences of making or sharing threats. Please be aware the penalties are severe and have a high likelihood of resulting in criminal charges. Any threats seen on social media should be reported to authorities, not reposted. Keep in mind anyone who shares or reposts a threat becomes part of the problem and the investigation. Students are urged to report any threats immediately. Remember, see or hear something, say something. It is important to understand that threats disrupt learning and place a strain on resources. To maintain a safe school environment, everyone must remain vigilant. Report, don't repost because school threats are no joking matter. I would like that our community to know that these threats have been incredibly disruptive to our learning environment. Students are feeling very anxious, our staff is feeling anxious, absenteeism is up, and when kids are not in school, they're not learning. And learning is our number one priority in Mesa Public Schools, and let's focus on learning and stop this nonsense with the threats.
