All right, here we go. Today is a huge day for us. I love the fact that we had to get such a big room today. Twenty-two police officers for this very big hiring and promotion ceremony. Probably two lines, right? It’s nice to have too many people to get everybody up here to raise your right hand. This is the most we have appointed in one ceremony in decades. Raise your right hand. I, [state your name]… We’re hoping to continue in this manner. Priority one for us is hiring, training, recruitment, and retention—consistent with the charter of the City of Portland and its laws. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that my heart’s a little heavy today, as I think of the challenges we’re facing as a community and even as a nation, as well as the risks that our officers continue to endure. And I will faithfully, honestly, and ethically… You are stepping into a time of real challenges. But I am hopeful. I’m hopeful because I’ve seen it in our community. This is a city that is resilient. This is a city that is striving toward a commitment to safety for all. And you’re stepping in at a time, I think, of unprecedented opportunity as well as unprecedented challenge. To the sergeants: these are the men and women that are on the front line. They’re out there with our officers—guiding, supporting, challenging, holding accountable. The sergeants are the culture of the Police Bureau. And for the family and friends that are here, thank you for being part of this community. You are now part of the PPB family. Whatever we face, however we show up, we’re going to do it together. And we’re going to do it in the best interest of Portlanders who deserve that high level of service. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve with you as an officer of the City of Portland. Congratulations.
