Now she's wearing a backpack and two shoulders. Here she's leaving. >> When store cameras clearly captured the suspects behind a theft, you would think making an arrest would be much easier. But things didn't turn out that way. >> That's not me. I'm pregnant. You're hurting me. >> YOU'RE HURTING ME. STOP. And let's not forget, even the loss prevention office has cameras, too. >> I was like, >> all of this and more is coming up in today's video. When shoplifterss think their full cart walk out couldn't have gone smoother. Next, let's look at the chaos that erupted when these Walmart shoplifterss attacked loss prevention staff. I want to wait for my parent to get here first. And I also No, I'm not. But she is and I'm not. >> On March 2nd, at a Walmart in Tampa, Florida, loss prevention agents detained two sisters for allegedly concealing merchandise in a purse, and their behavior prompted deputies to respond. It seemed like both sisters already had something in mind when the officers approached. >> Go get your parent out here. >> She's on her way. >> Okay. >> All right. All right, can we get your ID? >> Get your IDs. Come on. >> Make this easier. We can do it the hard way. I'm so >> I would just like I'll show you my idea. No, I'm Trust me, I'm not trying to not comply, but I want all the video footage to be shown. >> That's fine. We're going to see all the video footage. We need ID. >> We're trying to speed this. >> You need to give us IDs or you can throw in handcuffs right now. What do you want to do? >> What is the identify you? >> I want to wait for my parent to get here first. And I also No, I'm not. But she is and I'm not getting a minor about to go to handcuff back in my car. So, what do you want to do? unit ID or not. >> Okay, that's fine. Like I said, I want I want to see the video footage. >> This is so actually What do you think, my phone? >> Is this how criminals react when confronted with their own wrongdoing? But what really stands out is what happened next as the situation quickly escalated. >> You sure about that? We're about to add that on there >> cuz what you've been doing right now is resisting. I hope you know that. >> Oh, I'm being literally pushed across this room. I have not dropped anywhere. I did not find my phone. >> That's fine. It's all in body cam. >> I said she can have my phone and my purse. That's literally it. >> They're arrested. This whole thing is extra as hell. >> She's detained. >> Not arrested. Detained. >> Detained. >> Take a seat. >> No, I wouldn't. >> Mom says, "Stop talking. You're represented by >> So, at this time, the merchandise concealed in her purse." This one headbutted. All right. >> I don't know how the black dress starts concealing into the purse. I guess that's what like the ordering some like I said we haven't even recovered commercial so I don't have a dollar amount yet >> where's the purse >> price is right there >> okay >> she looked completely unconcerned as if nothing serious had happened meanwhile each item pulled from their bag added to the evidence against them making it harder to deny what had this one. >> So, did y'all just come from Washington State? >> Yes. >> And you all just come to Florida and steal? That's what we do. >> Okay. >> What's your name? >> All right. You can pass it easy or hard. You guys both stole. You don't want to cooperate, you can both go to jail. If you want to properate, we have other ways we can work her. I'm just asking her name. I'm not asking questions about this. >> I'm not willing to wait for her parent. >> You already >> She can wait for her parent. >> Come on. >> You can head her first name. >> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Some random person grabbing. How would anybody react? >> You're not being in charge for that. No, but I'm saying I still don't understand how a random employee could put their hands on you, but okay. >> After detaining the suspects, the deputies returned to the scene of the chaos. The footage from the loss prevention office helped provide additional evidence against the woman who had resisted. >> I mean, you're going to see I was trying to grab the bag. Look, I was trying to grab the bag. See? Yeah, the back. And she keep fighting me. But I was like, >> "Yeah, >> she's punching trying to get away." >> Bro, just hit the playground. Just hit play. Watch. Yeah. >> Yeah. The ranch remain silent. >> Shortly after, the parent of the other woman also arrived at the scene. It seemed that everything that had happened had left her truly disappointed. >> Multiple crimes. She won shoplifted from here, which in the state of Florida, it was just a misdemeanor. All she had to do is cooperate and we give her a court date. But she's refusing. >> Know that it was typical for law prevention to grab people. >> It is when they have their ID in their hand showing them on camera. That's right here. >> That's debatable. But >> I mean I have video. >> You can do whatever you got to do right now. >> I'm trying to talk to you about your other daughter. Trying to talk to you about your other daughter. >> Yeah. >> Same thing I just told you about her. You can't talk to her cuz she's an adult. I can't talk to her. All I did was ask the younger one her name and stuff. not to ask you permission to talk to me. Like I said, either go to jail for not cooperating or cooperate. There's other routes where she can go home with you tonight. >> No, I don't I don't want her to talk to anybody because they're out of here. I don't know. >> It's not coming from you, but like you >> I'm not I'm trying to help you out. Can you just >> defending a family member may be understandable, but the mother's confrontational attitude raises serious questions about whether she is teaching her daughters to take responsibility for their actions. >> Now you're arresting my daughter anyways. What do I got to talk to you about? Why did he tell me to get out like that? What is wrong with him? I've been civil to you guys. I'm losing my >> But I'm trying not to lose my on you guys. What is going on? >> I'm about to explain. I never said she was arrested. She's not arrested at this point. So >> Well, why did he say bye? Get out of here. Bye. What is wrong with him? He can't act like a human being just cuz he got a badge. I know damn well that police and sheriff do whatever the they want. >> All right. So, you want me to tell you what's going on? >> Yeah, I do. >> All right. Well, so today is her. She's no longer a juvenile. She's an adult. >> You guys didn't figure that out. >> So, now we're reading her her rights and she's going to be afforded the same opportunity your other daughter has. She wants to talk to us. She still has the right to wait for an attorney. If that is she's going, she's an adult as a she really wants to start off being in big boy jail on her. It's going to be up to her. But she's an adult, so she has to decide that on her own without you. >> Or she can take the diversion program, which is like the same thing I was telling you. >> Charge. No one gives a >> Okay. Well, she does. They do. So, she doesn't If she take the diversion program, she's not going to just go. >> I had a petty theft charge 20 years ago, and I have a job that probably pays more than the sheriff. So, >> I got you. But like I said, >> she's fine. Everybody's fine. I'm worried about that one. I want her to get processed. She has an attorney. >> Which one? The other one? >> The one in the truck has an attorney. >> The one in the truck's already in jail. >> She's not in my truck there anymore. No, she's in jail. Do you understand what's going on? >> In the end, the two sisters were charged with shoplifting. Accountability starts at home. Parents can defend their children without making excuses for their actions because protecting them from every consequence may only make it harder for them to learn from their mistakes. In the next case, watch how this woman faces karma after terrorizing a store owner. >> She stole your phone cuz you were recording. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Did she hit you in any way or did she just grab? >> She tried to hit me, but when she grabbed push me, I ain't worried about it. All I did was talk. I ain't do nothing. >> On the 6th of May, 2026, officers received a report from a store about a theft. Not only was the suspect allegedly involved in the theft, but she was also accused of assaulting an employee. The entire incident is being recounted through the employees account. >> She's inside the DSHS currently. >> Okay. She's the one that stole her phone, hit him, and threatened to him as well. And they saw her put something in her bag. So they're suspicious. She might have done something. >> She was going like this, acting like she was I was right there. So I watch all >> Okay. Um, so she stole your phone. She hit you. >> Mhm. >> How did this all >> Okay. This is my store. >> Okay. >> There was a three lady and they were coming inside and they were they tried to steal some item. I told her they have a backpack. I tell them backpack is not allowed. >> Okay. >> And uh and they not listen actually. They say I don't care. I need to go inside. I say okay if you guys want to go around but they just walk away and come back to get something to I have a video. >> If you can show me the video. Yeah. >> She was right right about here and she's backing up and she's going like like this just like somebody was going to draw us up. I go up. >> Was she saying anything? She's like just the other lady was telling her to get out of there and she wouldn't get out. Uh >> okay. Um and she stole she stole your phone cuz you were recording. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Did she hit you in any way or did she just grab >> tried to hit me but when she grabbed the phone I go back and it wasn't >> Okay. Okay. Let me let me wait for my second officer. >> Try and figure out what we got. They're still in the office right now. >> Yeah. She's being interviewed in the DSHS right now. So >> Okay. It sounds like saw fort felony harassment and aft um she stole someone's phone. So guy in the gray jacket's manager. Two girls walking the store with a backpack. He says, "We don't allow backpacks in here. You can't wear it." They started having a confrontation. Um >> just hearing this already gives us an idea of how chaotic the situation had been. At this point, officers had approached the location where the woman was working to detain her. >> Hello, Kent Police. Would you mind standing up? You're being detained. We're going to investigate a crime. We'll tell you about more outside. >> I'm going to grab this. >> No, no, no. You're not under arrest. You're just being detained while we investigate. And part of the investigation is talking to you and asking you some questions. >> Okay. >> So, come on out. >> So, I'll be right back. You can hold my ID. >> Uh, no. Why don't we take it with you? >> Okay. >> No, it's okay. >> And then just step out. Step out this way. And just go ahead and place your hands down your back. You're not under arrest, but you are being detained and not free to leave. Okay, >> just go ahead and let that go. >> I got the >> Okay, let's go out this way and we'll talk at our cars. Just follow 2K 58. We code for we have one detained. So, we're investigating an incident of harassment, theft, and assault. And I'll talk more about that in just a sec. But before we talk about it, uh I want our conversation to be official. >> No, don't worry about it. It's good. sit right here. >> I'm just about to talk to them. I ain't put my hands on nobody, so I don't care. They push me. I ain't worrying about it. All I did was talk. I ain't do nothing. >> Embarrassing, isn't it? Being handcuffed in front of your own co-workers. But once outside with the officers, that embarrassment seemed to disappear as she began telling her own story, accusing the store staff of wrongdoing instead. >> Um, me and my little sister had walked over there to see if they sell lighters cuz I was trying to smoke when I black him out. They had another black girl up in there and um the Muslim man was cussing out and treating her bad. So my sister was up in there before I even went in there or whatever and they was all fussing and I was like what's going on and my sister was like they was being racist or whatever [snorts] and I was like we can't I was like we not broke. We didn't come here to steal or whatever. I was like I got money. I was looking at sofa cuz I just got a house. So he went to stick his finger his middle fingers up and all of that stuff like that. And then I was like well I don't care you too. And I was like, "Y'all come on. We don't got to spend our money with them." >> So the man pushed me out the door. And then >> who was this man? >> Um he he was uh I guess the owner. I don't know. Not the one with the green shirt on the other one. And the lady had her phone in her hand. I did have a phone on her hand and knocked it on the ground and but I didn't touch her. But I did hit her phone and knocked it on the ground. And then I just walked out and went back up and up and gave and told my cousin what happened or whatever. And they was keep saying, "Come on, come on. Let's run." And I was like, "I'm not running because I ain't do nothing." You feel me? So, I didn't put my hands on nobody, but I did was telling them. >> Where is that phone now? >> I don't know. I It was I knocked it on the ground like right over there by them. I didn't take >> outside in front of the store on the sidewalk. >> No, like right by them. They start a phone like I don't know why they didn't pick it up. I don't have the phone. You can check my purse and everything. I don't have it. >> Okay. >> But I didn't put my hands on them, but I did knock it out because I'm like, "Why is your car?" >> So, and this is what we're trying to figure out. They're saying you stole the phone. >> No, >> you pushed the man. >> No, the man pushed me and I did push. I ain't going to lie. I did >> somebody with a gun. >> Yeah, but I lied because they kept running after us and I was like, "Y'all keep running after us. Then I got a gun." But I don't got no gun. You can search my stuff and everything. I lied. I did say that though. I ain't going to lie. I said that. But that's cuz they was coming after us and we didn't have nothing. >> A story that seemed to favor only herself, delivered with little enthusiasm. But her own actions had given officers reason to reach a very different conclusion. >> What's going on? And he just announced that he has probable cause for your arrest for thirdderee theft and assault fourth degree both misdemeanor. >> And so what where >> now I won't know more until I talk to him. >> So that's for now or that's old because I took >> No, no, no. That's for this incident right now. >> Right. But if they put their hands on me too. >> What was that? >> If the man pushed me and I pushed them back. No, they say for the >> he that other officer will come over and talk to you because he knows most of the stuff that's going on. >> Listen, I ain't tripping. Guy got me. Listen, Stang, look, they saying whatever. But I we but I didn't on God. I didn't hit her. I knocked the phone out hand and the man pushed me and I did push him back. Look, >> who is this? >> That's my sister. But no, the thing is the box they saying we trying to stole nothing was in the box. The box was empty. But if they take me to jail, good. God got me. Just tell Joe to buy me out. I ain't did nothing. >> We're listening to the radio to find out what exactly we're going to do. So >> them people lying, dog. [snorts] My phone gone, too. >> So So what's going to happen is uh you have several warrants. >> But I took care of all my warrants. That's what I'm saying. >> So you're going to get booked into score on the warrants. >> But I took care of that. >> That's something you'll have to discuss with the judge, >> man. They saw me. But listen, it's crazy because listen, I took care of that. >> And then you're going to get out of out of 10 police department, you're going to get charged with thirdderee theft. I saw four. >> Yeah, I'm going to score. It's good. It's good. It's good. I ain't scared of no jail. I'm d I'm telling you. BUT I'M TIRED OF THE DEVIL KEEP ME. them people is the they stuck up THERE IN THE F THEY TOLD US WE HAVE EVERYTHING WE DO now we came up to their money >> in the end the woman was charged with thirdderee theft and fourthderee assault trying to justify your actions by blaming others does not make you innocent [music] when a conflict escalates into alleged theft and assault your own actions can become the strongest evidence against you regardless of how convincing your story may sound [music] next when a shoplifting scheme involves an entire family including including their own son. >> I popped right up to you. I was in refugee and you kept playing the game. >> I didn't refuse. >> Yeah, but I didn't even do nothing. I had no involvement in me. >> Just a second. >> Yeah. >> On the 30th of January, 2026, a family from Palm Coast showed up at Home Depot. But their visit was far from a simple shopping trip when a box of power tools was allegedly stolen. More concerningly, their son was also reportedly involved, prompting deputies to respond. And here's what happened next. >> Behind my purse. I swear to you. >> Okay. >> All right. Just go ahead and step over here with us. >> I did not know that one thing was there. >> Who put in the car? >> No, because I did. I was in by them and I I thought we didn't find them. >> Just go ahead. Keep your hands out of your pockets. Just go ahead. Step over over this way. There we go. All right. What's going on? Keep your hands out of your pocket. >> Keep your hands out your pockets. What's going on today? >> We came and he he just walked up on us saying that I I took something. I ain't take nothing. I didn't take nothing. >> Okay. >> I swear to God, I didn't >> I didn't touch nothing or nothing. >> You don't have anything on your person? >> Ask him. I didn't touch nothing. Did I even touch anything? I didn't do nothing. >> Sure. >> You guys got your ID? >> Um, I do have >> Does he have an ID? >> Who? My son? >> No. >> Oh, I don't think so. Okay. >> What's your son's name? >> You have an ID on you? Do you have an ID? >> No, I don't. First name? >> No. O I S E S. >> Um, O I S E S. >> Yes, sir. Okasio. O A S IO. I don't have a middle initial. >> OC A S I O. >> Yes, sir. Roman numeral T. >> What is uh your date of birth? >> 10474. >> Delta 221 Delta type. >> Can I hit my vape for you? >> Do you have any weapons on? >> No, ma'am. >> All right. Before we go any further, before any talking, I'm just going to read you guys your rights. Okay. You and you. Okay. to him. So >> the deputies then addressed the theft allegations and the man immediately reacted defensively. However, his response appeared to contradict the store employees account >> and then started on >> statements. >> Yeah, I can get a statement. >> You want trespass? >> I've got the I've got all of that. >> All right, we'll get it all in the next package. >> Look, can we just not come back here ever again? >> That's not how it works. See, when you refuse I lost right up to you. I didn't refuse and you kept playing the game. Now it's not working. I didn't refuse to touch. >> Yeah, but I didn't even do nothing. I had no involvement in me. >> This a second? >> Yeah. >> I didn't have nothing on me or anything. >> We got nice cameras. >> I didn't I didn't touch nothing. I swear to God I didn't touch nothing. >> Do they have paperwork already? Do they need paper? >> They said that. I mean, I'll give them a statement on >> You guys already have our paperwork? >> Yeah, he said they're doing all that. >> You guys have camera footage. You mind showing it? >> Yeah, I'll go. You want me to go? >> Yeah. >> Okay, >> I'll go stand by 178. >> This is a stop at the door. Who was the one who put it in the cart? >> She put the tools in the cart and concealed them in her purse. >> They were both handling the tools together, looking at it, trying to decide, you know, if that's the one we're going to take. >> Okay. >> Not going to let anybody else get in trouble. >> Well, I appreciate that, but I mean, if we're we're tagging along and we know that those items are in the cart and we're hanging out with you by the registration. >> They didn't know. >> Okay. >> They didn't. I promise you. >> Okay. >> That's why they look folks surprised when they filled this out. >> Okay. You have any prior charges for for lararseny? >> I do. >> But they honestly I'm not going to let them get into something I did. They did not know. >> I appreciate being honest. >> They're looking at the video footage. >> Well, I know I'm going to jail, so I get it. I mean, there's nothing I can do. If they knew, I'd be honest with you, but they didn't know. >> I'm going to call you guys. >> Yeah, but you're you're I'm going to jail. I'm going to smell good. >> I'm going to jail, too. >> Do you have any prior? >> Yep. >> But they honestly didn't know. I promise you. You can look at the video. Nothing. I ain't doing nothing, bro. I want to stop. >> So, where's the sandpaper you take to that bag? >> Neither husband nor wife could seem to keep their hands still, appearing increasingly uneasy as the allegations were brought up. Was it a sign of guilt? The woman soon began offering her own explanations in an attempt to defend herself. >> The receipt. >> The receipt was in the cart, too. >> No, that's the receipt they gave him. There was just a little circular sandpaper. I paid 1070 for it or 1067. I'm sorry. >> I think that your phone is in the concrete, buddy. I hate for it to get messed up. >> Yeah. >> In the dry concrete. >> I will have bond and I have the money in my account. I'm going to have each other. She bonds me out. I'm going to transfer the money into my account right now. >> I'm going to step back over here. >> Yes, sir. >> Look, tell her I have no money in my account. Who are you going for? >> I'll be anything. I love you. >> I don't know. >> You said that's his first. >> That's one of those. >> Yeah, that's my charger, >> you have anything else on your person, ma'am? >> No, you can search me. >> All right. You do understand at this moment you're being detained. You're not free to leave. Nobody. >> All right, cool. >> I'm not going to lie to you. >> You're under arrest. >> I figured they're just bons. >> But there's your receipt. >> Oh, there it is. >> Listen, I know he doesn't smoke them, but I know they're going to throw this away. Can I just give this thing to give to my mom or can I give my mom? >> No, we we No, I mean we can't we'll figure that out later. He can't go with that, but we'll figure we'll figure that out. If your mom comes here and you want your mom to have the baby, >> she's not going to get here before me, is she? >> Well, I mean, we have I don't know. I haven't spoken with her. Have you? >> No. >> I mean, I would start I would probably give her a call to come get your son. >> Is he going to jail? >> You can go ahead. >> Is he going to jail? >> 109. Father, you say father. >> The woman's explanation seemed to get her nowhere as the deputies were not about to let sympathy override the evidence. Soon after, they made their decision on how to proceed. >> Sir, turn around. Put your hands behind your back. >> For what? >> Let me lock them first. For what? >> Okay. >> Well, I'm going to I'm going to ask you again. >> Can we put everything down? >> Absolutely. >> Just set it down. Doesn't need to be pretty. >> Okay. >> We can put that down, too. Do you have any family members in the area that are going to be able to >> That's all I want. >> That's all. >> Say again. >> Can I just hug him? That's what he's asking you. Can I give him a hug? >> We'll let him give you a hug once we get everything taken care of. >> That's you can turn around. >> I mean, you have a warrant. >> I know I have a warrant, but besides that, I didn't touch nothing to do with that. >> Well, I mean I mean at the least you have a warrant. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> That's who I'm getting with. >> I don't I don't know yet. I mean I mean at the least you have. So >> sorry >> because I really didn't take nothing. I mean you can crash them. I had nothing to do with I didn't take nothing. That's my phone and my sunglasses. >> Delta 221. >> You want to go get your car and bring it up here. I can stand by anywhere. I promise you my kids here. >> You cannot run. >> Even if I could, I wouldn't fly without it. >> Have a whispy fox on a whisper. Um, I think I'm needed if I >> So, where did the man's initial unwavering denials come from? Perhaps the answer lies in his criminal history, which his own wife brought up shortly afterward. >> Where's the rest of his belongings? Sitting up there hanging on. >> Yeah. Let me put on new gloves. I just It's mess. >> What's he going for? What is he going for? Uh, he had a warrant for petty theft and then he also has drug therap. >> He has a he admitted to my partner he's got a bubble pipe. He's got a met pipe and it just says positive. You tell me he's sober. Are you going to be okay in the same car with him? Yeah. >> Okay. >> Go get a picture of the car. My other HP is finishing statements for you guys. I'll get a nice packet together. Bring it out here. Take a minute video. >> Okay. I'll say it. Appreciate it. Thank you. >> Tight. Thank you. >> That's his jacket. Here's his cell phone and his glasses. >> This is going to go with him. Okay. Hang out right there, bud. Hey, ask ask what the brother's name is that's picking him up. Step out over this way. That way we don't get run over. >> Lean against the car. People lie all the time. I know. I know. >> I just tell you. >> People lie all the time. Even, you know, our partners. It sucks. But >> I'm just saying I'd tell you if I had to. >> I know. But we still got to do our next so you're not like, you know what I'm saying? >> Nothing on you is going to stick, hurt, poke me. >> You're not going to get mad that I'm stuck with a needle or something like that. >> That's another charge, isn't it? >> Could be. And then having it on you could also be another charge. And you know if you get to the jail it's been another felony charge if you find it on you. >> What is the brother's name? >> Hardy was charged with possession of fentanyl hashish marijuana over 20 g methamphetamine drug paraphernalia petite theft and shoplifting after a prior conviction. Okasio was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for theft. Dishonesty and denial cannot erase evidence, especially when surveillance footage and witness statements tell a different story. Prior convictions and outstanding warrants can create additional legal consequences, making it even more important to cooperate with law enforcement rather than make excuses. So, what happened that caused this next thief to completely lose control? Stop me. I'm pregnant. Stop. [screaming] You're hurting me. YOU'RE HURTING ME. STOP. >> YOU GOT to stop. Okay. STOP BANGING YOUR HEAD. >> NO. >> On the 18th of July, 2023, police officers were dispatched to a Target store after receiving reports of a theft. The suspect was reportedly a woman who had pushed a cart full of merchandise out of the store without paying, unaware that the entire incident had been captured on camera. >> It wasn't her, was it? >> Uh, it's Quebec. >> It's like 123. >> Yeah. Yeah. A call came in. Uh, >> she had a ton of soft lines. I don't I couldn't even tell you what was in there. I bookmarked her cuz I was dealing with the other this person. >> Yeah, that's going to be cuz I see the green pants. >> I was dealing with >> Okay. >> Don't know her name, but you'll probably recognize her. >> What's she wearing? >> I can give you an ID for her. >> She's passing the lanes right now. She has a blue shirt on. Okay. >> Is that the one he was in earlier? >> Short. >> He's coming up towards the bathroom. Do >> you have an item? >> Mhm. She just came in. Where is somebody called? sent him a shirt, came in, grabbed the cart, >> and then said to Karen, "Oh, I forgot my keys." And she went out the front door, >> and she's back in. >> That's the same one that had the bicycle in the store earlier. >> There she is. She got a book bag now that she did not come in. >> No, she's looking for Levis's. They're gone. And she's wearing a backpack and two shoulders. Here she's leaving. >> Not once, but twice. She really seemed to treat the store like her own personal storage room. Yet, when officers approached her, she reacted in a way that was hard to understand, causing the situation to descend into chaos. >> Turn around. Drop the backpack. >> Okay, I don't want to go to jail. Can you see me? Okay. Okay. >> Turn around. Turn around. Turn around. >> Stop moving. >> You're hurting me. >> Stop moving. Stop moving. You're hurting me, sir. >> Stand up. Stay right there. Stay right there. Stop moving. Stop. >> Stop moving. >> You're hurting. >> Stop moving. I'm going to tell you right now. Stop. >> Okay. I'm on my comments. >> Are you arresting me? >> I'm at the front entrance of Target. >> So, are you arresting? >> You're being detained at the moment. Jasmine, >> can I sit down? >> Front entrance of Target. This woman was acting like a child. She kept pretending to be remorseful, but in reality, she was constantly looking for ways to escape the consequences, shamelessly begging officers to let her go. >> I want to jail, sir. That's all I want to know. >> You're just being detained at the moment. >> Can I sit down? >> Please don't take me to jail, sir. Please not take me to jail. >> Stop moving. >> Can you not take me to jail, >> Jasmine? >> I don't want to go to jail, sir. Please. Stop gripping my fingers. We're going to figure it out. Okay. >> Okay. >> Do you want to sit down? >> Sit down. Okay, cross your legs. >> Okay, >> stop. Don't move from there. Jasmine, >> can you not take me to jail, please? >> Tell me your last name, Jasmine. >> Okay, I want to tell you something right now. Okay, I'm going to read you something. Okay, >> these are your keys. Are they? >> No. Um, I'm holding on in I'm holding on to >> Okay. Okay. So, but these were with you. Okay. Yes. >> Okay. I just want to know. >> Okay. Can you take me to jail? At this point, backup officers had arrived at the scene to help take the woman into custody, but that was exactly what she wanted to avoid. And once again, chaos erupted. >> She's moving around. >> Calm down. >> Can I go? >> Stand up. >> You're hurting me. >> Stop. You're hurting me. You're hurting me. >> Let's go. You got to walk. Please, please. >> You're going to get a resisting charge if you don't walk. >> I don't want to go to jail. Please, I don't want to go to jail. >> I don't want to go to jail. Please. Please. Please. I don't want to go to jail. So, PLEASE. [screaming] PLEASE. I won't come back. I won't go back, sir. I won't go back. I will break in the car. I'm breaking. >> Get in the car. Stop acting right. >> Get in the car. >> Please. Okay. >> Get in the car. >> Get in the car. >> I swear I'm going to kill myself. I'm going to I swear to God. >> You need to stop. >> I don't want to go to jail. >> You shouldn't go. You shouldn't have shoplifted. >> Please. I'm supposed to go to rehab tomorrow. Please. >> There was no peace inside the patrol car either. The situation continued to escalate as she engaged in multiple acts of self harm. >> Somebody swear to God. >> You got to stop. Okay. >> Stop banging your head. >> No. >> I'm going to >> stop. >> I'm going to I swear to God. Please. >> Listen. Oh, why can't we talk? >> What's your name? >> Huh? You won't even talk to me, but you want me to release you. >> Please, I want to go to detox. Can you please release me? >> You got to talk to me. Calm down. >> What's your name? >> Jasmine. >> Jasmine, what? >> Please release me, sir. I want to go to detox. Please. >> Well, hold on. Please >> calm down. What happened here today at Target? >> I was shoplifting cuz I have an addict. I'm so stupid. >> Hey, but what were you stealing? >> Um, clothes so I could get something to eat and make sure I was well, sir. Please, can you just take me a detox? >> Hold on. Listen. >> I don't want to go to jail. >> I need you to take a deep breath. >> Please. >> Listen to me. >> Okay. >> Listen to me. >> I genuinely believe she may be struggling with addiction, especially given how she repeatedly loses control of her emotions. As a result, even the officer's procedures become much more difficult to carry out. >> I don't want to disappoint my mom no more, sir. Please. >> Okay. Sit back one more. >> Okay, sir. Please. >> It's okay. Just hang out with me. Okay. >> I'm going give you a couple scenarios. Okay. A misdemeanor shoplifting prank. You'll get out in the morning. It's the week. It's the work week, right? Okay. But if you act up here and you get a felony, you won't be out until they hold until pre-trial. Okay. >> So, am I going to jail? >> And there's two options here. One, you could get released after you you're medically cleared. Two, you can go to jail. Okay? And there's another option with that jail is you can go to jail just for this misdemeanor >> under the tongue. >> Okay? Or you can go to jail for a couple felonies, which I I don't suggest, right? >> Listen, if he chooses to take you to jail, the faster we can get you there, the faster they can release you. >> They won't release me until the night >> the night time. >> Yeah. Please, every time I see that tomorrow, >> tomorrow's Wednesday. >> On my point, I'm going to jail. >> In the end, Jasmine was charged with shoplifting. Shoplifting may seem like a minor offense, but resisting officers and engaging in dangerous behavior during an arrest can make an already difficult situation much worse. Cooperating with law enforcement and seeking appropriate help is a far better choice than allowing panic and impulsive actions to create additional legal consequences. Before moving on to the next theft case, let's take a look at this dine and dash incident. It's >> like a probably like a six, seveny old Chevy. Looks like a Equinox SUV. >> Yeah, >> I would take that from responsibility. So, my little sister does not get handcuffed. How I feel being like this. >> On May 11, two women visited a restaurant, enjoyed their meal, but then left without paying the bill, prompting an employee to call a deputy. At this point, the only clues he had were the descriptions provided by the staff. Well, I would probably say about half hour, 45 minutes ago. Had uh two younger black females. Okay. >> Sitting on the other side of the patio. Um I took a uh >> Who you the server? >> Uh this is the server right here. >> I took a copy of the bill. >> That's the what they owe us. >> Okay. >> Um they ran >> Oh, they ran. >> Yep. Down through the parking lot. They witnessed the whole thing. Jumped in their car. almost hit a couple citizens walking down the sidewalk as they peeled out of the parking lot. He was only able to catch a video of the back of the car going by the street sign right here. So, we have a video of the car, but we >> have a license plate. >> It's It's blurry. I mean, you try to go still frame by still frame to try to make it out, but it's like a probably like a 6, seveny old Chevy. Looks like a Equinox SUV. >> Yeah. >> If I give you a phone number, you send it to it. >> Yeah. You have video surveillance in the store. I mean inside the restaurant. >> Unfortunately, I have nothing past the end of the building here to the patio and I don't have access to any kind of back reporting. That'll be something owners. >> I gave them the drinks. >> Who's them? >> The two females that D and Dash from us. >> Can you describe each one? >> One, they were both, if I had to guess, African-Amean, darkkinned. Um they had one had long braided hair. Uh probably about if I had to guess somewhere about my height. Okay. >> Um and then the other had a had short really short red hair. Um she had a neck tattoo. If I had to guess, four or five letters on the neck tattoo. Uh they were both really skinny. >> Based on the employees descriptions, the deputies soon located both suspects alongside the SUV. be linked to the incident. But did they even know why the deputy had shown up? >> What were you guys doing tonight? >> Literally leaving a place. I asked her to give me water. >> What's that? You asked her to get you water? >> Yeah, we stopped at a bar to give me water. >> Okay. How many bars were you guys on the beach? >> No, we just got the place I think like 3 or 4 miles from here. Not even. >> Are you guys from here? >> No, Maya. >> Okay. Did you guys just drive down? >> No. My little sister has a boyfriend here. >> Okay. >> And literally out that's the only reason why we're here in Florida. >> Okay. >> I know I know nothing about Florida. So like if I go to jail in Florida, my mom's going to be mad. Like my family's going to be mad. >> How old are you? >> I'm 21. >> Okay. >> Just turned 21. >> Yeah. >> So I'm like I have no business to be in trouble. I'm not trying to be in trouble. I didn't do anything. Only thing we know, we just literally left a bar. >> What bar did you guys leave? >> My sister can tell you. >> I can tell you from from GPS. Okay. >> When I charge my phone, I can tell. That's the only thing about police. I can tell you the actual address. If you if you guys followed us, you'll see. I stopped there to get water literally cuz she dropped me off from a restaurant and I got drinks. I'm 21 years old. I'm allowed to drink. Get >> drinks for what restaurant? >> She's old enough to drink, so she's certainly old enough to be held accountable for her actions. But when questioned about the incident, her response was strangely irrelevant to what the deputy was asking. over. >> Listen, we had we had something happen over there at the beach. So, two people didn't pay their tab. >> Same car you guys are in. It >> has nothing to do with us. >> Has nothing to do with you guys. Why Why are the people there saying you two match the description? >> We had to go. Okay. I probably Okay. >> Do you remember talking to a waitress or anything? Maybe Maybe he you gave him your his he gave you his number or anything? >> You or your sister? You got a waitress's number? A waiter's number? No, >> I got to wait with it. >> Listen, I'm just asking. Like I said, I'm not trying to I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, but you got to be honest with us. >> I am. I'm not. >> You live here now? >> Literally 3 days. >> Okay. Like four. >> So now you're living in Florida, right? >> Like four altogether. >> Okay. Where you live at? Where is >> Port Charlotte? You live in >> Port Charlotte. >> There's a bunch of ways to go about this. Okay. >> We just moved here. Now straight up. I'm gonna be straight up with you. >> Please do it. >> Okay. You were out at the Waverly. >> No. >> And you walked out on a bill. Okay. >> Me and my sister. >> Yes. >> No. >> Okay. There's eyewitnesses. There's video. >> There's a description of your car. So, you're going to tell me it's somebody else. But there's several things that can go on here. You live in Port Charlotte and stuff. We can do, you know, you can I can write your ticket and you can appear in court or I can physically take you to jail. But that depends on your honesty. Okay. >> But the other 20-year-old woman reacted quite differently. And the moment the deputy brought up the word restaurant, things seemed to get even more complicated. >> So, I'm not I'm not I'm going to cut straight to it. We're not playing games. We know what happened tonight. Honesty goes a long way. You guys live in Port Charlotte now? >> Yeah. No. >> Okay. Your sister was how many? She's a little intoxicated, so I'm trying to You're Are you Have you had anything to drink tonight? >> A little bit. >> Okay. So, in what we can I'm believe in the ball in your court. Honesty goes a long way. Why we're here is because Were you guys at the Waverly tonight? The restaurant. >> I don't even know where we're at. >> That's That's It's a restaurant/bar over there on the beach. >> Where are you guys over there? >> I'm not answering no questions. >> You don't want to answer any questions? >> I'm ready. Just do whatever you got to do. >> Do whatever I got to do. Okay, you done? You're done talking. >> I understand like why we're here. I understand what you have to do. I might just what I was explaining is when I was explaining your sister was just not really understanding when we we can work with honesty cuz you live here, correct? You have >> Look, we're from I'll tell you. You want to know? We're from Ohio. We just came down. We don't got nothing in our pocket. We don't We're down here struggling. Like >> I understand that. >> So like I'm telling you I'm ready to do what you got to do. >> You guys have an address down here. Uh, you just stay in the car. I got you. You guys have family down here that brought you here? No. >> Any reason why Englewood or anything? >> No. Uh, we're really originally Port Charlotte. We went to Englewood cuz we started working here. We just got a job so we can start >> Okay. Where do you guys work at? >> It's called Arthur's. >> Arthur's? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> We just started working there. Today was our first day. >> You don't have any permanent addresses or anything? Well, the same explain to your sisters like honesty goes a long way. We can honestly go with the court date if we get honestly. But like I said, balls in your court and you say you don't want to talk to me no more. That leaves me that leaves me with one choice. You understand what I'm saying? You're here because of the waverly. >> No, no, no. >> Okay. You don't want to talk no more. >> Two women, two different versions of the story. Were they really homeless or did they have a home to return to? With their explanations raising more questions than answers, the deputy eventually decided to make an arrest. the restaurant you guys are at, you and your sister. >> Hey, does margaritas ring a bell or anything? >> Waverly on the beach. You walk down. >> You said you're going to miss me since you break. >> Yep. I've been lied to. >> So, what do we do? >> Right now, you're going to do >> I don't need to go to jail. I'm literally college student. Like I understand. >> I know. >> And I don't explain it to you. You don't know. You don't understand. You don't understand what I have against me. >> And that's why I actually I'm not a I'm not I'm not from Florida. I'm from Ohio. >> And he's holding my back. And I have no I'm not aggressive at all. >> I got you. Just once you're in handcuffs, you're our responsibility. >> And that's understandable. But you being a person employee of the government. But however, I will I will genely take whatever whatever whoever whoever at this point at this point whoever did whatever and run out or whatever I would take that responsibility. So my little sister does not get handcuffed. How I feel being like this I don't want her to do this. I don't want her to go through that. Her she's 20. I'm 21. >> Okay. >> I had that responsibility to say that. She doesn't even hear me. But I would tell you I would take whatever and I will go in that back seat so she doesn't I'm sorry I didn't take a couple shots. I will go in that back seat so she doesn't. >> So she doesn't. And I was not unwaverly but I will say I was so she doesn't. I'm sorry. I will say that you can take my phone. You can take my phone and you can take me. So she doesn't. I'm sorry. She does not deserve that. We are both in college and you can literally look that up. Literally my dad will cry. He will [ __ ] be so mad at me right now. And I will take that. I will take that. >> I'll take >> You want to >> I will take that. >> Put in them. >> I'll take that. >> Ultimately, based on the available evidence, 20-year-old Micaia was charged with defrauding an inkeeper under $300. Honesty and accountability matter, especially when confronted with evidence of wrongdoing. Trying to avoid responsibility through conflicting explanations can only make an already difficult situation worse. Next, this woman seems to think that being pregnant is an excuse to get away with her crimes. >> Um, also I'm pregnant and on method I only saw him like since serious like health concerns. Hey, the shoes. The shoes. The shoes. These aren't mine. >> Yeah, that's good. That's why I asked you, are you wearing hakas? >> No, those are um >> On the 21st of October 2023, officers were dispatched to a Walmart after receiving a report of a pregnant woman concealing merchandise and removing tags from products. When approached, she already seemed prepared to face the officers. >> Hello. >> Hi. >> Hi. >> You come talk to me? >> Come on. >> We're going to take this buggy to We're going to take this buggy to the loss prevention office and have a conversation. >> Well, we're going to talk about that when we get there. Okay. >> I'll show you. Open my Oreos. >> You're pregnant? >> Yeah. >> Huh? How How many uh How many months are you pregnant? >> Uh just almost to three. >> Almost to three. >> And he's already squeezing on your bladder >> a little bit. >> Yeah. Interested. >> I'm already started that unless it's a belly mouth. >> I'm always sorry. I mean, I'm homeless. I'll bring it in a free thing. So, I was trying to get some warm clothes. Like I know that's not acceptable obviously, but it's just so cold and I can't get my propane thing to work. They gave me like a a heater um that goes directly on the tank. >> Whatever I have don't fit. So I'm freezing to death in there. My husband just left me yesterday. So like I don't have body heat. >> So I was just trying. >> The woman immediately admitted to her actions which could have made the situation much simpler. However, her criminal history brought the situation back to a more serious level. >> You ever been arrested before for shotlooking? >> For shoplifting. >> How many times you been convicted? >> Uh, apparently twice. Once in 200 like 8 and then that's what I'm on probation for now. >> For your first one or your second one. >> This that was my second one. >> Oh. Yeah. >> 2008 what actually happened. I was working at a gas station and I let somebody walk out with a case of beer and they let they because I told him the truth that I let him do it. Um they prosecuted me but I didn't know they did it for shoplifting. But anyway, when they pulled it when I got in trouble at TJ Maxx like 6 months ago, they said that it was considered shoplifting. So they had it as that on my record. I've also been arrested for several felonies a long time ago. I didn't I wasn't in trouble. >> Have you been convicted of any felonies? >> Yeah. >> Several four. Uh no. Yeah. Four. >> Uh no. >> Yeah. I had two possession of a control substance and two death of control. >> Do you have any violent felonies? >> Well, that was back in 2007 and 2009. I wasn't getting any trouble. So, I ended up homeless. I got most of her job at TJ Maxx all als. >> No, I am busy. I have I have one already. >> You look like my brother. [laughter] I keep I keep staring at you cuz you look just like him. Sorry. >> Hey, sir. I'm just waiting on criminal history and the items list. The disqualification is >> The woman calmly explained her situation without showing much embarrassment. She even brought up her health problems afterward, seemingly hoping to gain the officer's sympathy. >> Um, also I'm pregnant and on methodone, so I'm like serious like health concerns. They try they're supposed to come dose me from all. I have a release of information signed if I was to ever get arrested for them to give me my medication cuz I can kill >> plenty of medication at the jail. No, they don't have methodone in jail. >> They have an RN. >> They should. >> And my baby going to die like you. >> Why? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Why is Say that one more time? >> Because I will go into withdrawal. It can kill the baby. >> I understand how that works. But what do you So what are you on with what do you draw? Meth. >> Methadone. >> You You're on methadone withdrawal. >> Yeah, I will be in methadone withdrawal. Yes. Okay. >> I go to the clinic at Alliance Recovery Center on Sycamore every day. >> Every day? >> Yes. >> For me? >> Yes. >> Yeah. I don't get my take home to get like a week or two supply at the time because it's free to dose there, but I have to pay to take it home because of my insurance. >> So, yeah. >> Otherwise, I have take homes I can turn. kind of help and I already had a stillborn that work if I went to rehab my baby. >> It was no coincidence that the woman gradually revealed details about her circumstances and family. She later made no effort to hide her desperation as she pleaded with the officer to give her another chance. >> Sir, my tent is really here. I don't want to spend 180 hours on my tent cuz it collapsed on me. Like you can't write a ticket. >> What are you saying about your tent? >> It's going to get stolen. Everything in it is going to get stolen if I'm going to get stolen. Buy another one because it collapsed. >> So you're saying what? You saying the sheriff's office is going to steal your property? >> No. I'm not sharing her new tent that she just got wherever she left it is going to get stolen. You made the decision to be in this position. >> You also have the option to write me a ticket. That's something you should have thought of, man. >> Actually, it wouldn't be an option. The it's called a disqualification to that citation is the history based on the policy put forth by our department. So, I can't violate policy for for that. >> I mean, they told me that after my third time, I would get >> No, after your third time is a felony conviction is a disqualifier for uh for pre-arrest aversion and citations. >> I don't want to keep you. I don't have bail money. Like, I'm going to have to sit there like I have no bail money and nobody can come bail me out. Like my mom sure is hell going to make bail money. So like everything [ __ ] I've lost ever. >> You were in huckers. >> At this point, the woman was being taken into custody. And that was when the officers discovered more stolen merchandise she had been carrying on her person the entire time. >> Palms. Touch your palms. Touch your palms. >> We had an interpreter in there. Hey, bro. The shoes. The shoes. The shoes. These aren't mine. >> Yeah, I was good. That's why I asked you. Are you wearing hakas? >> No, those are >> any freaking shoes, man. >> My shoes are in the uh in the store. My real one in a box under the um in the kitchen area. >> Yeah. >> Turn. Turn around. Turn around. Turn around. >> Pull. >> Pull. Pull. No. Pull your feet. >> Oh, my feet. Oh. Oh, sorry. >> Take my kids my kids shoes off. >> Yeah, she just admitted to the shoes, too. >> Yeah, I'm sorry. I forgot all about the shoes, dude. >> They charge for her to light a cigarette in this building. >> I've heard of people I've heard things about lighting cigarettes in certain >> Yeah, I'll look at the Yeah, I'll look at the code. >> Um, we're going to ban her now for that. >> Yeah. [laughter] The woman was charged with shoplifting. Her circumstances may explain the struggles she was facing, but they do not erase responsibility for her actions. Being honest after getting caught does not guarantee leniency, especially when a criminal history can limit the options available to officers. What do you think about cases like this? I'm sorry. >> No, you're going to jail now. >> Please. I'm going. >> The 1st of October, 2025, officers were dispatched to a Walmart after receiving a report of an active shoplifting incident. Every [snorts] move the suspect made was being monitored by loss prevention staff and officers through the surveillance cameras. >> So, it's this one right here. She just put back the dress right now and some of the jewelry, but she still got some other. >> It's the cheap jewelry. It's not that expensive. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> But she put some other in some of the white >> the wide packs that she's running right now. >> I don't know what she's doing right now. Do you have an one? >> I got one. Oh, one there. >> Oh, there she is. >> That one right there. >> Yeah. >> Oh, yeah. We're going to talk with her in just a second. Right after. >> So, she's been walking on top and she's just going around and around. She's selected. >> Okay. >> I got six. >> So you will go now. >> It's your fault. If you want to go, we can go and ask her inside or we can wait for her to try to exit. >> Well, I mean, it's it's only >> What do you guys want? Do you guys want her to Do you want your stuff back? Do you want to catch her for that? >> Well, I would like to trespass her and persecute, but if we stop her inside, we're not going to be able to do that. >> If we stop her inside, >> Correct. >> because she might say, "Oh, I was going to pay for it." What just happened proves that the saying Walmart cameras are better than bank cameras may actually have some basis. From the surveillance footage alone, the employee continued providing officers with detailed information about the woman's actions. >> Was with a male. The male was on the phone the whole time and she was on the front end like this like she was falling asleep. So that's what I told the operator that probably she's under some influence. >> Yeah. >> But she was like she was fallen. Um and then she'll start walking in select the merchandise. >> She going toward exit all at the front. >> Yeah, she's coming to the front right now. Hopefully she's going to try to exit >> cuz she has been doing the exactly same thing like three four times. She walked to the back and then come back in and go apparel. >> So let's >> She's going to check out right now. Is is that where she just turned to or went back? Oh >> she just turned into the funeral. >> This is the front towards us. Yeah, she just put the dress in one of those shelves. Let's see if she selected once again cuz she just selected the dress fell so she grabbed it and put it in one of the rides. >> I think she's walking to the dress. Yeah, she's walking to the dress. >> I think Melissa already got it. >> She like hit it or something. >> No, she concealed. Oh, yeah. The dress is right there. >> She concealed. >> She concealed a dress inside her jacket, but it fell. So you just grab it from the floor and put it on the front. >> Oh. >> At this point, things began to escalate as employees spotted the suspect moving toward the exit. Officers immediately moved in to confront her. They said stop. That means stop. >> I don't have any more stuff on me. >> Better way. Police. Put your hands behind your back. >> It's all in there. I don't have anything on me. I promise. It's all in vain. I'm not >> relax your arms. Why are you arresting me? >> Relax. >> Cuz you're stealing. >> I put Yeah. I >> your arm. >> Why are you arresting me to arrest me? >> Listen. Look at me. Look at me. >> Why we're arresting you is cuz you just stole. You don't get to drop the items. And that's how it work. >> I'm sorry. Please. >> No, you're not. You're sorry. You got caught. That's what it >> I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Please don't arrest me. I'm begging you. >> Too too late. You're already arrested. >> I'm begging you. Please don't arrest me. No. >> No, you wouldn't. cuz you didn't even want to stop. >> I was doing >> you talking about yourself. >> The suspect's attempt to run became a clear admission of her actions and she began showing remorse only after being taken into the loss prevention office. >> Guess who's going to jail now? You. >> No, you just call me a piece of >> I'm sorry. I'm sorry. >> No, you're going to jail now. >> Please. No, that's how it works. >> And you had more [ __ ] in your pockets. >> Those are mine. I got those from Target. Those I got from Target. >> You probably stole those from Target, too. >> No, I did not. I bought those. >> I bought those on >> Okay, stand up real quick so I can search. >> All right, go ahead and take a seat. >> What's your name? Maryanne, is that one word? >> Did my partner let you know you have a warrant as well with Redmond for assault for and theft? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Yeah, I'm just letting you know. And that one's for I think like 5,000 or something like that. >> So, are we doing new charges or we just >> No, I'm doing new charges, too. But we'll do a site for her new charges. She'll get booked on her warrant. So, we'll give her >> Yeah, we'll just give her a physical copy that can go in her belongings. >> Correct. I will go do the site then. >> Cool. You're never going to get out of jail for your misdemeanor warrant. >> I bet you'll be out like next week. >> It turned out this woman was no amateur as employees soon discovered even more merchandise from other stores among her belongings. >> I'm very good at my job. I know damn well it was me. >> All right. Sure. So, she has a receipt from Target in there. >> Okay. Yeah. Everything that's Target's is hers. >> Yeah. It's just the grocery that she has receipt for. This is going to be our >> That's all of your stuff. Your product. Okay. This stuff is is Targets. >> No, that's going to be ours. >> Oh, this is yours, too. >> I mean, what is on the back? She has a receipt from Target, right? And it's inside. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> This stuff is hers. >> Yeah, she got the receipt. >> Okay. This is your stuff. So, this is your new citation for the theft recharge, right? This is different from the warrant that we're taking you in on from Redmond. Okay. >> So, this has your court date on it as well. I need you to listen for a second, Marian. This has your court date on it and has your case number. >> I don't care. >> Okay. Well, you're going to have another warrant if you don't kill anybody, so I don't care. >> So, we can't take any of it. That's to go home. >> Yeah. >> And then this food is full. >> I'm never going to get out. >> Well, that's not our fault. You can't keep committing crimes and expect to just stay out free. >> No, I don't. I just want to go home. I would do anything. >> No, you you have active warrants and then shoplifting on top of that and then I mean I can get you with obstructing if I wanted. >> Go ahead. >> Okay, then you just stay in jail for longer. >> Stand up. We're not going to play this game. Let's go. In the end, the woman was charged with shoplifting and taken into custody on existing warrants. Dropping stolen items does not erase the crime, especially when surveillance footage has already documented what happened. Trying to run can only make the situation worse. >> My money and my phone in both of my hands. >> Explain to you, you're under investigation for a theft and I have the right to detain you. >> I am not in prison guard. My fourth amendment is amendment right. On the 13th of April 2022, officers received a report from Walmart about a 66-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman who were skip scanning items at the store. As soon as officers arrived, both suspects were stopped and the merchandise was recovered. >> So, I have a feeling some of this stuff. Yeah, that's Is that even paid for? >> No, >> there's tags on it. >> It's not. >> All right, this is getting out of here. >> You want to go down? Yeah. All right. Cool. >> Yeah. >> So, here's what's going to happen. >> Let me I Let me get her information first. What's your name? >> I didn't steal nothing. I need my name >> because supposedly you have the receipt. He has the receipt. We don't know. >> Okay. What's your name? >> Betty. >> Betty. What? >> I got no money in my >> What's that? >> Okay. >> What's your last name? >> 227 headph. >> What's my last name? >> Kenry. >> No. Kryine. No, but I know who they are. >> Are you from Philadelphia? >> Betty Beverly 12751. >> 12751. >> Then who are you? >> You know, >> I knew something, >> you know. Yeah, cuz you got good instincts, right? You should listen to them. >> Yes. >> That's all right. Just learn from it. Yeah. I'm 48. You're how old? 66. You're not too young to stop. You know what I mean? >> It's all right. >> I think that's my word. >> You know who I am. >> You look familiar. >> No, but I'm saying >> we're going to walk down to the loss prevention side. Okay. my boyfriend and my driver's license. >> Since there were still several unpaid items, [music] both suspects were asked to go to the loss prevention office for further investigation. However, the woman remained completely convinced [music] that she was innocent, making it difficult for the officers to handle the situation. >> I don't have any. >> Where are we going? >> Just follow him. >> I'm going to the other side. Yeah. >> Huh? >> Okay. Well, you're under investigation right now. So, >> I'm what? >> Under investigation for theft right now. So, you're detained. We need to have you come over to the other side. >> We're going to watch the other guy. >> All right, Miss Beverly. Listen, we're waiting. >> Okay. I'm not Listen, I'm not saying >> Okay. I'm not saying you stole anything, but he's saying that you have the receipt. Is Is that the receipt in the front pocket there? >> No, that's my card. I didn't receive. Is that the receipt? >> Dad, I ain't got my name. That's for my car. >> Okay, listen. I'm trying to be as nice as I can. Like I said, I'm not saying you stole anything. >> Yeah, he didn't. >> He stopped you cuz apparently he stole some stuff that was already admitted to. >> He stopped. >> The loss prevention gentleman stopped your boyfriend. >> Stopped your boyfriend. >> You were in lockdown. >> I understand that. He went outside to get the receipt from you. Your boyfriend's saying you got the receipt. He's saying he gave it to you. >> I got my I got my receipt for what she asked him if she took anything. >> No, I I did not. I said the woman who did that. >> Is the uh is the lady suspected of anything? >> 227. >> But we haven't watched the transaction to see exactly right. But the stuff that she has is good. She's refusing. She's She's giving her a hard time over there. >> Although the theft initially seemed straightforward with both suspects cooperating so far, they appeared to think the situation was not serious and began refusing the necessary procedures causing the situation to escalate. >> What? >> Can I have you have a seat for me? >> Well, I got you sit down. >> Can I have you have a seat for me? >> No, I'm not s down cuz I got you. All right. Put your hand behind your back. What? >> You're being detained. >> I got to go to the restroom, man. >> Put your hand behind, man. Man, >> you're going to get this is going to turn into something way bigger. I need you to put your hand behind your back, please. >> You don't have to do all this, man. >> Right now, you're going to be detained. Okay? I need to put you in handcuffs until we figure out what's going on. So, I need you to put your hand loose. Okay? Turn me loose, man. >> I need to put your hands behind your back. I'm telling you one more time, >> man. Just turn me, man. I'm going to put my hand behind your back. I got my money in my hand. Come on, man. Put your hands behind your back. >> Everything is in my hand. >> Put your right hand behind your back. You're going to go to the ground. >> Everything is in my hand, sir. This all I'm trying to say is I'm trying to put my mother pocket. Come on, man. >> That was completely unnecessary. >> Sir, I'm Come on, man. Look how tight you got this [ __ ] >> Damn, man. >> Step back to the wall. >> I don't have a problem working with you, but when I tell you I need to put your hands on your back, you got to listen. >> But you would tell me to put my hands behind my back like I did did something wrong with you. I got my money and my phone in both of my hands. Like we explained to you, you're under investigation for a theft and I have the right to detain you. You started walking around. I didn't I didn't like that. >> I didn't walk nowhere. I came all the way back. >> You were walking up behind them. I didn't dudes right there. >> I'm not I'm not going to argue with you. I'm done talking to you too. >> I been on this, man. You know, >> it was very unnecessary. >> You But you trying to act like I'm a kid and you damn a super cop. You ain't got to treat me like that, man. >> Like I said, I'm not arguing with you anymore. >> Arguing with you. >> All this got bagged and it wasn't even scanned. He showed no signs of someone who felt guilty. While the store's CCTV footage clearly revealed the details of what both of them had done that they're right there while he's not scared. >> Yeah. And the whole like all this is taking place right here like on the bull which is going to be a farther away shot. But he drives over here apparently and just bags it up. What it looks like. >> Oh, he went away from the registers and bagged it. >> Yeah. >> So he takes >> So he took the coat, >> right? and he goes over here and >> just puts it in his cart, >> right? >> And then she had it in her cart, so he must have gave it back to her once they cleared. >> Well, I think they [snorts] when when they went past the point of sale, the only thing that she had in her cart was that >> that's this pocket knife right here, it looks like. >> Yeah. Was that So, he's still >> Was this purchased or was this just taken or did he bring come? >> I'm not sure. Says bag. >> Did he open anything with it? That was a open knife right there. >> Um I don't know. Mike could see if he uh used it on the um sporting goods back there on the Blackmax product to open up. She's already out the door. He's leaving >> and she knows that whole card ain't worth two or three items that she scanned. I'm sure the receipt was only like 20 bucks. >> Well, nobody's paid yet. According to this, it's the merchandise is going right out the door now. We're stopping him and there's no payment made >> and let's see what happens. Maybe there's no payment at all. She [snorts] started pulling some receipt out of her purse. >> Okay. So, comes over and they scan the ginger ale. You can tell by here there's only a couple items. See the bar right here? Yeah. >> There's only a couple items. >> Returning to the woman, she had no idea that she was being watched on camera. So, she continued to falsely deny any wrongdoing. [snorts] I'm >> not supposed to stay here >> until Yeah, until I have >> You're not under arrest, but you're being detained right now. So, here's the thing. But I am not a prisoner. >> Okay. >> White man had us prison since 2000 years. I'm 71 years old. >> Okay. >> Well, your boyfriend did steal. >> I don't get I'm getting my groceries. I need my >> Not until I tell you you can leave. >> Why? You ain't my mother. >> No, but you're being detained right now for real. >> Okay. I'm trying to be as nice as I can. >> I am too. So, I'm going to get my >> No, you're not a You're not free to leave. >> I'm not a prisoner. Don't you understand? >> I am not a prisoner. Got you. >> My fourth amendment is a amendment rights. Arrest me for being a prisoner. I don't think so. >> You're not free to leave. >> I know my fourth amendment rights. >> Now, come on. >> You're not free to leave. >> But you're in trouble now. >> Let me get my phone, baby. >> Do what you need to do. >> Yeah. Well, unless I have committed a crime or in the process to commit a crime, you cannot. And I knew that this is my fourth amendment. >> 35. >> This is ridiculous. I got apple pie in the oven and you're passing with me. >> Does your baby take my pants off? I got a diaper on >> for real. Listen to I got a high and you're going to have to wait just a minute. Wait. Listen. You said I don't care what that means. >> Did you you said you didn't want to go all the way to the LT office cuz you didn't want to walk up there with me. Okay. That's why that's why we're waiting. >> Back in the loss prevention office, the man continued to deny any wrongdoing despite the evidence captured on camera. But clearly his denials changed nothing. >> Hey y'all load me up with char. >> I'll get it for you. Don't worry about it. >> Nothing. You ear. >> You want them bar? >> Yeah. I got to get through that real quick. You're barred from Walmart property. That means Sam's Club, Murphy's Gas Station, the parking lot in here. If you go to any of Walmart property, you can be charged for trespass. You understand that? >> Okay. >> Uh, I need you to step over here and stand and look in this down picture of your off. >> I'm not I'm not going to take the handcuffs off. >> Just let it loose, man. >> Which one? There they got There is plenty of room in there, man. [clears throat] >> So, you are going to be charged with that. But listen, if you're going to be charged with theft, now listen. So, what I'm going to do, hey, listen to me, >> okay? >> Cuz I don't want to take you to jail. I'm going to write you a summon, >> okay? So, I do need you to come down to the office with me. >> So, you'll just listen, you'll have to go to court. Tell them what happened. >> So, they watched the video. I didn't get a chance to look at the video. They watched the video said that you're going to be charged with it and then you can talk to them and get some more information from them. But like I said, just follow me down here. That way I can get that paper summon. >> What's that? >> Yeah. And we'll get the car key as well and whatever key is cuz he uh it sounds like he was fighting a little bit. So yeah. Yeah. So we'll go down here. We get get the rest of your groceries. >> I in the oven. Thank you. Give me an appointment to >> Yes. We'll get to >> Let's try to have my pie. >> I'm got diialysis applied in the morning. >> Okay. >> Well, you're not. >> I got to go to key at 110. >> In the end, Arthur Matthews was charged with theft without consent, resisting [music] arrest, and obstruction of official business, while Betty Beverly was charged with theft without consent. Denying wrongdoing does not erase the evidence against you. When surveillance footage clearly shows what happened, refusing to accept responsibility can only make the situation worse. Really good chance that they're going to apply for forfeite and you won't get that vehicle back. >> Ma'am, just look at it this way. We're not questioning you or accusing you or anything. On the 26th of May 2023, an officer approached a woman after receiving information that she was allegedly involved in the theft of an $1800 necklace from Chanel. She quickly denied all the allegations. We're looking for you. All right. So, you're expecting the theft at Chanel? You in Chanel today? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Necklace. It's like a necklace. We got footage of it happening today. Exactly what you're wearing. Exact description, glasses, everything. >> Do you have the item on you still? Just I don't have >> You're wearing mask. Yeah, but do you have the item you stole from Chanel? We have footage of it, ma'am. We know you've been looking for you. There's many stores that know you [clears throat] steal items. Do you have the Chanel item on you right now? >> I do not have >> Okay. All right. Well, you're going to be placed under arrest for now. Okay. I'm going to take your items. All right. Place your hands behind your back, ma'am, please. You have rights to remain silent. Anything you do can use against you to court of law. You have right to attorney. You cannot afford to attorneys. You got arrested last week too. Ed in prim. >> Yes. Okay. So, you're familiar with this, right? >> It turned out that the woman had a habit of stealing. Even the items she was carrying and that officers checked were suspected to have been stolen as well. The case became easier when officers already had information about the woman. Because of this, they had clear probable cause for the arrest. And with the missing necklace valued at $1,800, she could potentially face a thirdderee shoplifting charge in New Jersey. But for now, she continued to stall the officer from searching the vehicle where she was suspected of hiding the stolen item. >> Not just take the necklace out of the car, they will apply for forfeite of that vehicle. We will not get that vehicle back. So, is it worth it to you to lose that vehicle or would you allow us to retrieve that necklace from whatever vehicle you may have put in? >> When you say allow you, does that mean um >> if it's your vehicle and you came here with it, we need your permission to enter that vehicle. Is it your vehicle? Did you drive here today? >> Yes. So you would enter the vehicle and search or do I >> we would you would sign a form that would allow us to enter the vehicle to retrieve data >> or the other route like my supervisor explained was we will potentially take the vehicle for search and seizure and then you could potentially lose the vehicle as well. Would before signing the form, would you allow me to speak to my lawyer? >> No. No. There's no need to speak to a lawyer about this since you're here, right? >> Yes. But before signing any kind of form, I would like to consult with him. >> We need to consult consult with an attorney before any questioning. You read her her Miranda? >> Yes, I did. >> You didn't read your Miranda rightites? >> No. >> Um, we're not questioning you. We're just asking you for permission. sign the form, the release form to allow us to enter your vehicle to retrieve the item. >> Our objective is to uh retrieve that necklace that you took that we have on camera footage of you taking the item, putting it into your pocket, concealing it, and walking past all points of sales. Since this was not the first time she had faced the police, she clearly understood what she was doing. From speaking slowly to giving lengthy explanations, everything continued to show that she was trying to stall for time. >> The thing is, if I allow signers for allow you to search, you may find anything else you like. >> Well, if you find anything else along the search for that for that necklace. Yeah. If it's if it's something with tags on it, sensor tags, no no receipts. It's it's >> No, I there's a whole bunch of stuff, you know, that I have. There's no sensor tags, but that I've purchased before and I don't You might take, you know, you might let me explain what what'll happen then. If there's items that are in bags that don't have receipts, you're saying you purchase other items. I I can understand that. And if you purchase them legitimately, you have a receipt somewhere electronically or or or not. >> No, I'm saying that that's fine. If we do come across something that appears to be >> Yeah. I mean, honestly, you have items from other stores. They they witnessed you select this this necklace and put it in your pocket and walk out with it. If there's anything else that's new merchandise that's in bags that doesn't have receipts that will be held. You're not going to be charged for anything unless there's there's anything that that proves any criminal activity. But if there's items that are new items that are in bags or whatever that don't have receipts, we hold it for safekeeping until you bring us receipt and then you'll get that returned to you. So you're not going to lose those items. Okay. So those items has to be held. >> Well, if there's something in there that that has it's brand new in bags that, you know, doesn't have any tags or or it has tags on it or doesn't have a receipt with it. >> The process dragged on for roughly 20 unnecessary minutes just to explain that she could voluntarily sign the consent form before officers took the next step of seeking a search warrant. The officers also explained these options to her. It's pretty much simple as that. We know you came here, did something like your party, right? Right. Holy [ __ ] We're not, you know, we're not we know what you did. So, we're not, you know, accusing you trying to fish for information. What we're trying to do instead of to calling your car to headquarters, applying for a search warrant and waiting for, you know, 3 to five business days for you to get your car, we if you sign the search warrant, we'll leave the car here for you. So when you're released because shoplifting, it's not that big of a deal. I don't know if you have history or not. I can pro, you know, but if you are released today, all you got to do is just come back and drive home. I understand now that I was um explaining to your supervisors that I had other items in the vehicle and if you >> Can you define other items? We're not going to take your items from you if they belong there. >> Well, that's the thing. I don't know. >> The items have no proof of purchase. >> Who does other items like me? >> All right, ma'am. You're allowed to be present. How about that? You're going to stand by and you can observe us. I understand that your supervisor explained to me that all those items will be taken in and and recorded and and put in storage. So, and I have to provide a receipt in order to retrieve them. >> In the end, she agreed to sign the search consent form, but she immediately became concerned about whether there was any way to stop the search. It clearly showed the anxiety of someone who had something to hide. >> Um, >> do you want me Oh, do you want me to be present? Right. >> Yeah. can be present. You don't have to be present. We don't want you to do anything. I want you to tell me what you want to do. >> I'm If I'm present and as soon as you pull the the item, then you don't search further. Do you? >> Ma'am, we have to search the entire vehicle to make sure. How do I know it's there's one item, 10 items, 15 items? So far, we already found we have two items you know you taken. We have we have video footage of you taking. So, there's potential you were shoplifting more items tonight. Maybe you didn't, maybe you did. But in our search, if we happen to find more, we'll continue the search and look. So, >> yeah, definitely. >> You're concerned. >> I know you and you're saying that I have to provide the receipts. >> All right, ma'am. We have been We have been quite patient. Um, what's your decision today? Would you like it? You can say yes or no. So, how do you want me to do this? >> If you say no, we take you to headquarters. We process you for what went on today. If you say yes, we search your car and we go from there. >> You can say it verbal. Everything's being recorded. >> Oh, okay. So, you don't need me to write that down now? >> Right on. >> Okay. Yes. >> Or do you want me to go to the car right now or? Well, we're going to we're going to drive up there because we want you to be present while we're while we do a search. If you're willing to let us do that, we're going to stand by the officers who search the bar stand by with you. We retrieve the items that we're looking for. And like I said, you know, if you're willing to do this, fantastic. It'll help expedate the process. We get what you need out of this. But if you don't, definitely we're going to apply for the search warrant and we probably get it and we'll go for everything. So this this is the the better of the options, but you know, it's your choice >> again. Um, so do you want me to >> Yes, we'll take a start with a yes or no, man. What's your answer to that question? >> Yeah. Okay. >> Yes. that. Okay. >> Hold stretch. >> You left-handed, right-handed? >> Right-handed. >> Why don't we uh drive? >> All right. Yeah, >> that's why I was asking. >> All right. Yeah. >> Finally, the woman was charged with thirdderee shoplifting. This case showed that delaying and making excuses could not erase the evidence against her. Once the police had probable cause and the stolen item was connected to her, her attempts to stall only made the situation worse. >> At least tell him I'm getting arrested. >> You will? stand up for you. >> You don't just a couple days ago. >> Yes. >> And how long were you with us? >> How long? Wait for my >> On the 9th of September 2024, police were dispatched to a Home Depot after receiving a report of a woman detained there for suspected shoplifting. But when officers arrived, the situation quickly became tense as she began denying the allegations. >> I wasn't shoplifting. And I was trying to call my friend to come for cuz I know my phone's not working. And I just said to them, "Two people are in here right now shopping, looking a major amount." And I was waiting to get my card from the person. I was just standing right there waiting for them to bring the card to me. I swear my life I said I'll pay for it. I can't [laughter] I can't cuz I can't afford to get arrested. I can't. >> Okay. >> I can't afford this right now. >> You have a picture. >> I don't My phone's not working. >> What you got? >> No. $55.96. >> What was she doing? >> What? What? 500? What? >> Let me talk to him. >> Yo, please. Man, just let me just breathe now. I can't figure out what's going >> Yeah. Let's figure out what's going on. Breathe. >> Selected to put it inside a tote. She went to >> do that all the time. >> Plumbing fitting and then walked out the door with the tote with these concealed inside of it. >> But people walk people put things in there all the time. I see you doing [laughter] that all the time. Like I don't get it. >> I don't get it. >> Are you going to arrest me, >> ma'am? Just wait. >> Please don't wait. >> You said you had names of other shopping. >> Yes, I told them other in here right now [laughter] and they passed us when they were walking in here. >> We'll get that information, too, so that that'll help. >> Despite denying any wrongdoing, she kept a suspicious grip on her bag, raising the question of what might be hidden inside. And as the officer asked her to separate the bag, she became increasingly panicked. >> I'm getting arrested then. >> No, listen. Just just stand up for me. >> Can you listen to me? Can you listen to >> All right. Listen, try to relax. Put your phone down. You're not being arrested here. We got to figure out everything that's going on. Okay. But I need to put you in handcuffs. No. All right. But that doesn't mean you're arrested. It's a procedure. We have to procure being arrested. That means >> just stand up. Listen to me. Ma'am, >> can you just listen to us? >> I'll stand here. I'll stay here. Please. Just don't. >> You're going to have to stand up regardless. >> I know. We're not real. Please leave. >> Yeah. We're done. Let's go. >> Okay. Wait. Okay. Okay. Okay. We'll do it. Please. >> Put your phone. Just put your phone down. >> All right. I can't breathe right now. I'm getting arrested up. >> Not yet. >> We got to figure out what evidence. >> Yeah. We got to do our investigation right now. >> Can we talk to you, please? >> Yes. Yes, you can. But do us favor. >> Before you arrest me, please. >> Okay. Go ahead. Say whatever you want to say. >> Listen. You're not being arrested. Okay. You're being detained. There's a difference. Okay. I need to put you in the handcuffs. Do you understand that? It's something I have to do, but doesn't mean you're going to come with us. All right. So, I just need to stand up and put your hands behind you for me. Please. Can you do that for me? >> Can I just say something? >> You listen. Let me do that and then you can tell me everything you want to tell me. >> Can I just say first before you do this, please? I just got in trouble with you guys not too long ago, like a couple nights ago, cuz my >> listen, don't worry about that. We're going to Listen, today is about today. So, listen to me, right? I did a year for a shoplifting. Listen to me. What's your name? What's your name? Valerie. I can't do this right now. Listen. My name is Officer Shot. Right. >> Listen. You were asking me if you're getting arrested or not. Yes, you are getting arrested. Please >> for shoplifting. That's what I'm saying. But I didn't leave the store. >> It doesn't matter. Once you conceal items. >> Yo, I see people. >> Valerie. Valerie. Listen to me. Listen to me. We're past that. I am helping you, right? >> You said you have information about other shopper. [laughter] And they're here right now. >> Okay. So you could give us that information and that will help you cuz we tell the judge that right now. >> She showed no intention of providing the information the officer requested which appeared to signal resistance. The officer [snorts] then took action and the situation quickly descended into chaos. >> Come on, let's go. >> Why are you DOING THIS TO ME? >> YOU ARE HORRIBLE. >> I wasn't even leaving. >> I wasn't even leaving. >> Okay, let's go. We're going to get to come back together. Let's go. >> Why? You just said I'm getting I'm not getting arrested and you said I'm detained. >> Come on. >> And I told you. >> Now you're saying I'm arrested. >> Yes, you are. >> What the [ __ ] Why did both of you? >> Why am I arrested now? What's the deal? >> We're shoplifting. >> But please. Yo, am I going to like Am I going to go to jail though? >> No, you're not going to go to school. >> How do you know? >> How do you know? Have my bag. That's my bag and my my phone and [laughter] everything. >> What the I'm just saying. >> Are you going to walk normal? Yes, we can. Please, man. >> We'll get you some stuff. >> We're going to grab your stuff. Let's go. >> Meeting. >> Come on. >> Hey, sir. Sir, >> can you grab the receipt and stuff and then just meet us in the front? >> Thank you. And then >> how do you know I'm not going to go to jail? >> Well, it all depends when we get there and how you're acting right now. >> I'm going to ask. >> So, if you're cooperating with us and [clears throat] if you give us other information, >> I have so much information. >> Well, that's going to help you right now. >> Let's go. resolution. >> Yes. And that bag in the box. >> Okay. >> Which bag? I got >> that's hers. >> All [clears throat] right. >> Yes. >> Yo, can I at least fix my shirt, please? >> Here, let me help you fix your >> fear of going to jail completely took over her. She repeatedly begged to be let go, even admitting during the chaos that she had been arrested before. >> I wasn't even leaving. [ __ ] OUT OF HERE. LET'S GET UP. I'm going to go to jail today. >> Huh? >> What' you say? >> I'm probably going to jail now. >> Listen, you said you uh >> you dealt with us a couple days ago. >> Yes. >> And how long were you with us? >> How long? Like for like six, seven hours. >> [laughter] >> You listen. You're going to come in. You're going to do the paperwork AND YOU LEAVE. >> YOU said that to me the other night. >> Well, I wasn't here the other night. >> Wait hours. [screaming] >> They work differently. >> I was hours. I need to help you. I can't. That's why I became a CI. I know you don't get it. I can't afford this right now.
