[Music] Chief Bob Day: Hi, I'm Portland Police Chief Bob Day. As we close out 2025, I want to take a moment to reflect on a year that has been busy, challenging, and filled with important work across our city. First though, I want to acknowledge the lives lost this year to homicidal violence and traffic crashes. Each loss affects families, friends, neighborhoods, and our entire community. We remember them, and their loved ones remain in our thoughts. I want to thank our sworn personnel, our professional staff, our partner agencies, elected officials, and most importantly, you, the Portland community. Your support, partnership, and engagement are critical to our success. As we look ahead to next year, I'm optimistic about our momentum and we remain committed to building a safer, stronger, and more connected Portland. It's impossible to showcase all of what has occurred this year, but the following is a small capsule of some of the great work done by our members, especially those who work in support roles. Thank you, and I wish you all a safe and peaceful new year. [Music] [Newspaper headlines begin] [Year-End 2025 Review] [Portland vote to extend police chief's tenure speaks to city's focus on 'stability and consistency' - The Oregonian] Mayor Keith Wilson: I'm honored to present to the City Council, my nominee for the chief of police, Robert Day. Councilor Loretta Smith: What keeps you up at night as police chief? Chief Bob Day: The what keeps me up at night is the risk that we will squander the time that we're seeing where Portlanders are coming together alongside of law enforcement, which has not always been the case, but really holistically as a community. And what lies ahead, I think is incredibly more opportunistic and exciting than maybe even what we've seen in the three decades I served before. Portland City Councilor 1: Aye. Portland City Councilor 2: Aye. Portland City Councilor 3: Aye. Portland City Councilor 4: Yes. Portland City Councilor 5: I vote aye. Portland City Councilor 6: Aye. Assistant Chief Chuck Lovell: Do you like these? Speaker 20: Portland Police plungers ready to go here. [Cheers] [Music] [Chapman Bike Bus] Chief Bob Day: Good morning. Thanks for joining us today. Appreciate it. [Sunshine Division Holiday Meal Delivery Day] [Music] [List of arrest headlines] Acting Det. Chris McDonald: Our folks in patrol, we always stand on their shoulders with everything that we do. And I think this also speaks to the efficacy of our neighborhood response teams at North-Central, and East. And of course, the expertise that our narcotics organized crime division gives us. [Young boy joins dad at hiring ceremony wearing police costume] Oh, that's awesome. Put him right there. [Music] [See Spot run! Portland Police unveils new robo partner - KATU [Large-Scale March Concludes, PPB Collaborates to Help Ensure Safety for All] Chief Bob Day: The fact of the matter is, and it's been highlighted so many times so well, but I just want to emphasize, this is one city block. City of Portland's about 145 square miles. This is one city block. And even the events that are happening down there do not rise to the level of attention that they are receiving. We are seeing this true for our society in whole. I'm not going to try and editorialize too much, but these 30 second, 20 second, 15 second clips, clips that are brought in from months ago or maybe even years ago, we've seen Portland portrayed through the events of the lens of '20 and '21. And what's actually happening in the response that we're seeing both from Portlanders and from the Portland Police Bureau is not in line with that national narrative. [Music] [Portland Police Bureau is using Dialogue Liaison Officers to help de-escalate at ICE protests -OPB] Officer Ruch: Our main goal is to build relationships with people, specifically people who haven't had a lot of interaction with police before. We wear this particular uniform so people can tell that we're not there strictly for enforcement. I'm here to communicate with people, point out safety concerns we have, hear what they might need. Sgt Ismail: Basically, make the event safe for everybody, both those that are part of the event and those that are observing the event. [Music] [How a British psychology professor is guiding Portland police's response to ICE protests - The Oregonian] Professor Clifford Stott: I'm delighted to be here. I think the fact that I am speaks volumes about the extent to which the Portland Bureau of Police is forward-looking and leading edge. [Music] [Forgotten no more: Portland Police officer killed in 1917 honored after century old story resurfaces - KPTV] Speaker 28: Andrew J. Laugeson. Jean Zornado [Fallen Officer's Granddaughter]: But this is a super great honor that they have shown us today. It makes us feel so honored and so proud of him. [Music] Officer Mathew: We still go out here every single day to make Portland safer. We just keep working for a better future for our generation and the next generation to come, and make it safe, not just for the people who live here, but the people who visit our town, and make it a welcoming place for all. Speaker 31: You're doing your job and you're you're actually working for the people and helping people out. That's amazing police work. Speaker 32: Thank you for the service guys. Officer Mathew: Have a good one. [Music] [Be Safe This New Year 2026]
