Okay. My kids are way more important than little funky merchandise here. I'm being funny. >> Like mother, like daughter is not always a compliment. When a mother becomes a role model for wrongdoing, her own child may be the [music] one who learns from her. But what happens when those actions finally have consequences? Find out in today's video. When shoplifter mothers think they could get away with their kids, stay up to date with the most compelling police body cam cases by liking this video and subscribing to This is Law. Let's begin with the mother who tried to shift the blame onto her own family members. putting the stuff in the bag and y'all are all walking to the front and then you stop. >> We've been here so [snorts] many times and I get you're trying to protect your mom. >> But that one's on. >> Hear me out. >> On the 4th of June 2025, officers were dispatched to Target after receiving a report of a woman and two family members shoplifting. What made the situation worse was that this was not the first time they had been involved in such an incident, and the officers quickly recognized the faces of her family members. That's not how I raised y'all. >> I know you. >> Think I think everybody does at this point. >> Everybody knows me. >> We're sitting here. >> Wait, where do you know me from? >> I remember you. >> Where? >> How do you know me? >> I don't know you. I know. I know your sister. Is that your sister? >> Wait, how? >> I saw you down in Benel. >> I know you. >> When she just got charged for >> I'm not your sister. >> You're the one that was sitting with me and the baby. That's what I was sitting with you. >> You're pretty sweet. I like you. >> yourself, but I mean I'm out here with you guys again. >> No, she's pretty sweet. You and the one that was watching over me and the baby when you were going to rush it. >> I don't give a about that. One charge is already dropped. >> None of that. None of that matters. I'm not here for that. We're here for something different today. >> That charge got dropped. I went to court and literally they told me to go downstairs and then they go, >> "Oh, it's dropped >> yesterday morning." >> Yeah. See, I'm not here to hold anything against anybody. >> No, I didn't have a problem with the actual county. The state state trooper me and him cas hell went from the getgo and I don't >> He's a good guy, too. He's a good >> They spoke casually as if they were not the ones who had just been caught doing something wrong. They even innocently asked whether she could come back to the store and shop again. >> Trespass or not? >> What do you mean? >> Like, let's say >> they don't give you paperwork. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> And they say you're trespass. >> Yeah. Yeah. Your >> trespass. >> If I don't get it though and they say you like, >> you're going to get it. >> I ain't never got in this in over a year. >> Okay. But they were told you you were trespassed, right? >> Not really. They just told me um not to come in. >> That doesn't mean you're trespassed then. >> It was like one of the workers. He was having a bad day. He's like, I just don't want you back in the store. >> Yeah. It don't mean nothing. >> Hang tight for us. Okay. Let's figure out what's going on because Cor wants to do something different. >> Yeah. She watching the kids on the video. I watched the video. It's all on the on the surveillance. >> What's going on? >> We're trying to figure something out. I know my supervisor wants to do something different. Okay. >> What would your supervisor? >> That's what we're trying to figure out. Hey, remember look. You remember the last time we weren't scared. Nothing bad happened. >> I was scared. >> Nothing bad happened. >> What do you mean? Wait a second. You're like, "How do you know? >> We're Wait, let me let me see what's going on." >> You were like, "How do you know she's going to jail?" I was like, "Cuz." And then I was like, "Mom, you're going to jail." And look what happened. She went to jail. >> Look on my finger. I don't know what's happening now. >> Me neither. Cuz I just got told I'm free to go and then >> give us a minute and figure out what's going on. Okay. >> What the hell is going on? >> You don't get a job so hard. I'm not. >> The mother was handcuffed and detained while officers continued their investigation. When questioned about what happened, she completely lied about the story, contradicting what the surveillance footage showed. What's >> going on? >> Okay. All right. You want to know what's going on? So the there's video that shows that you put a blanket in your kid's possession >> and I told them not to do it. >> You told them not to do what? So you put the blanket in their possession? >> I put it in there cuz they said they want it and I looked at my wallet and I didn't have a money and I told them not to do it. >> As as the adult, why didn't you take the belonging away from them knowing that you couldn't afford it? Why didn't you take it away and why did you let them walk out the door? >> I didn't let them walk out. I was already out of the building, >> right? You didn't even you didn't supervise them on any aspect. Okay. >> And then you can even ask my daughter. She even told them I told her not to. >> All right. So, hang tight. >> What's up? >> She's going to jail. It's okay. >> She is going to jail. Yes. >> She is. Perfect to know. >> I told you I'd tell you whatever you wanted to know. >> Thank you. >> It's for putting in the bag. >> What's up? >> It's for putting in the bag. Huh? Because she told us not to shop list. >> I'm not really sure. I'm not the primary cops are not all cops are fakes. Most of them are so nice to me. Sadly, her family members seemed to accept what was happening to their mother without much reaction. Still unaware of how serious the situation was while the mother continued to deny responsibility. So, it's on video. You put one in the back. >> And I told him not I didn't have enough money and I told him not to do I couldn't and then you all and then all y'all walk out. >> I didn't all walk out. I was way over across the >> It's on video y'all right in front. You go and then they follow you out. So, why did you put the one in her bag? If >> I could pay for it, but my passport and I liked it because I didn't have enough. >> Well, unfortunately, this is where we're at. >> No, it's not. Whatever. Cuz now I'm getting >> You have the hard drive with the video. >> Yeah. >> Can I get that, please? >> All right. Do you I mean, so is there a reason why why she walked out with it? >> Do you I mean, you're you're the adult here. Is there a reason why she walked out? >> So, then why didn't you take the items out of your bag and and put them back? about the fish is gone. >> That's fine. You don't have to be against it this time. Is there a reason why? >> I just sat there and told her to put it back. She didn't put it back. >> Okay. But you're the adult one getting charged and they're getting because you're the adult. >> When I just got Why would your be charged when you're the adult and you're responsible? >> When the other cop just sat there and said he was going to give me a break. >> Well, no. We want We just watched the video. >> I know. Myself and Corporal Quint. >> The cop in there. He even said the video. The full video wasn't done at No, we're past that. Like I said, >> the video that we just watched, you're deliberately putting the stuff in the bag and y'all are all walking to the front and then you stop. You start walking and they follow you right behind >> and I was talking to them, telling not to do it, but I didn't have the money for it. >> She seemed to be trying to put all the blame on her family members to prove her innocence. She was then escorted away. But the situation did not end there as the officer had some advice for the remaining family members. >> Hey, we've been How many times have I seen you now? >> Twice. But it's my fault. This one. >> Hey, listen. What's your name again? >> Ashley. >> Ashley. We've been here so many times. And I get you're trying to protect your mom. >> But that one's actually >> Hear me out. Hear me out. >> Because I have my cash and all money. I know you're trying to protect your mom, but it's wrong. She needs as as your parent, she needs to look out for you. Look, Ashley, you cannot continue to protect her decisions. The choices she makes is the choices she makes. Okay, I want to see you do better. I've seen you more than enough times in situations that you should not be in. It's okay. >> Wait, so I'm not I don't have to do nothing because Okay, thank God. >> How did they get here? the van. >> Okay. Cuz she has suspended license, too, and she knows that. >> So, I just wanted to at least talk to you and give you an idea. Uh that that's kind of what's going on. So, >> would you want me to go ahead and take the van? Would you rather it sit here until tomorrow? >> That's up to her. It's her van and that's up to Target. If Target's okay with it staying overnight until someone can get it. >> I can take it. Like, that don't bother me. >> Okay. Do you want to Will you take her uh to go ask her if she wants her to take the van out of here and all that? >> Sure. >> All right. So, you're okay with her taking your kids in the car? All righty, we'll do. >> In the end, the woman's children were allowed to leave with their guardian while the mother was charged with petite theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The case showed how quickly poor decisions can place an entire family in a difficult [music] situation, taking responsibility instead of shifting blame is crucial, especially when the evidence clearly tells a different story. The next mother was even worse, using her own family members to carry out the thefts for her. So, same kids. We think adults are putting them up to stealing stuff. >> Yes. It's the same car every time. Drops them off. >> But either way, >> on the 13th of October, 2024, police received a report from Target about a theft that had taken place. The suspect was believed to be a mother who had involved members of her own family in the incident. When officers arrived at the scene, the mother was not present. So they quickly approached the remaining individuals and this was what happened next >> outside. He was she was at the game stop him a game >> and then I had came in here we was going to go look at the you know the electronic section we going to go look at stuff. >> Okay. All right. Where's um y'all have a cell phone on you? >> Mhm. >> Okay. Is it mom, dad? Who's driving you around? >> Okay. What's your names? >> J. J. >> Okay. Is it J A Y? How do you spell J? >> J A Y. >> J A Y. And this is your real name? >> Mhm. >> Okay. You know it's a crime to lie to me about that, right? >> No, it ain't my real name. >> What's your actual name? >> A L. >> What's your last name? >> What's your last name, buddy? >> Smith. >> Smith. That's your real last name. >> Whose mom or dad or whoever dropped you off is in the car? Mama. >> Your mama? What's your mama's name? >> Tequila. >> It's what? >> Tequila. >> Tequila is your mom's name. >> Like the liquor. >> I don't know how to spell her name, but her name. >> What's her last name? >> What's your first name? >> What' you say your last name was? >> What's your last name? >> Both boys repeatedly gave different answers, clearly trying to hide information, forcing the officers to warn them once again. this [ __ ] of lying back and forth and names not getting because you told him your last name was Smith. >> What? What? What last name did you tell? >> Okay. Can you not remember your last name? >> How old are you, my man? >> You're what? >> You're 10 years old. So, you know what your last name is, right? >> Hey, how you doing? >> Are you mom? >> Yeah. >> Okay. They are jumping over security counters and looking through electronics. trying to get they going back. >> What's your name, ma'am? >> What's your name about? >> Yeah, I don't know. I haven't seen security footage or anything. Um they from what the security guard told me was that they were watching them on the cameras jumping in and around the electronics. your mom. >> The mother thought the situation was caused by a family member's problem, unaware she was actually involved. Meanwhile, Target's loss prevention team shared their suspicions. >> But this is the car and this is the license plate and I can show you um the individual. >> Hang on a second. >> Yeah, that's her. >> Okay. >> Okay. Um have y'all reported this in other counties? Yeah, this is all this is a districtwide >> districtwide thing. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> This is in the Atlanta area. This is the farthest they've like they've just been coming out farther. >> So that's him. >> Okay. That's the same kid. Yeah. >> Okay. So we think that um >> Yeah, that's him. >> Yeah. So same kids. We think adults are putting them up to stealing stuff. >> Yes. It's the same car every time. Drops them off. They do it and then it comes back around and picks them up and they drive off. >> So, what's her involvement in it? How do y'all have pictures of her in the store? She's dropping them off. >> Sure. How we have pictures? >> It was troubling that the mother had involved her own children in her actions. That may also explain why she showed little surprise when the officers presented the allegations. >> If you wouldn't mind, uh, this officer can go and and just take a look just to make sure. I don't again, I'm not saying that you know, you know, but maybe the boy snuck something in or something like that. Okay. So, if you don't mind, I would love to let this officer just take a peek in and just make sure that there's no stolen target stuff in there. Okay. Um, would you mind handing him the key so he can do that? >> Okay. What you say about >> If you consent to it, obviously. What' you say? >> Would you want you to just wait for my rights? >> Yeah. So, I just because I'm I'm asking you questions about a potential crime. I'm going to go ahead and advise you of your rights. That way, you know that you have them. Okay. >> I just want to know what's going on. Like, is this stopping me stopping us from leaving? And they didn't. Uh cuz right now we're investigating a theft. We're investigating whether they stole products or not. >> Okay. Again, it's just >> again it's entirely up to you. So is that you you have to be be the one to give consent. >> I mean it's it's nothing in there. >> Yep. iPhone box right off the cuff. We got an iPad and five cell phones so far. It looks like six cell phones. >> Okay. >> Everything I found so far is right up here. Um, the majority the white iPhone box that's on the bottom right there was down here in the floorboard. Those three iPhones and that Motorola box were in the center console. And I'm just telling you this just for your reference. I'm obviously going to write it down. Okay. >> Beyond this theft, police found footage of her family members appearing at multiple stores over about 2 and 1/2 months with $25,000 in losses and believed she was directly involved. Faced with these allegations, the woman gradually lost her composure, appearing genuinely worried. >> Don't listen to me. They may not go to jail today. Today, the only question I've got is whether you're going to jail or not. >> But either way, they are not going to be with you if they go to jail. >> Now, >> don't know. The question right now is whether you are going to be cooperative and get honest about what's going on >> or whether everybody is going to separate defects homes and Jacob. >> No, no, no, no. >> So, what's happening here, Mr. Tequila? What's going on? >> Now, you need to do go ahead and talk to him while I go talk to some of these investigators. >> Mr. Tequila, you Hey, ma'am, I need you to get off the phone, okay? You need to talk to me. You I'm the most I'm the person you need to be concerned about right now, okay? No one that's on the phone. You need to be concerned about me. >> Okay. >> So, you need to tell me what's going on. >> Mr. Tequila, have you ever heard of a RICO charge? Do you know what that is? >> It's called a raketeering and criminal organizations charge. That's what a RICO charge is. >> So, I'm going to jail right now. >> It You need to start telling me what's going on. Please. >> And I would recommend you not get on your phone because like I said, I'm the one you need to be worried about. >> Nobody get Lord. >> Okay. So talk. >> Clearly, if she had truly been concerned about her family, there would not have been repeated thefts. Worse, when confronted again, they denied everything, as if that was what their mother had taught them. [snorts] >> Not right now. She's uh in handcuffs in the back of a cop car right now. >> For what? >> She's being detained for investigative purposes. >> Yeah. What? What? What? >> We're investigating thefts. >> Thefts? What? >> Hi. >> We're going to steal an idea from stealing them. >> Okay. >> I actually sent one of my cops to go get a car seat because they already they're getting it from your car. You got a car seat in your car? Okay. keep going to get it from the car cuz I already checked it. So, and your mom just called and said she's on 85. There was a minute there where she didn't have a ride, but she got one. She's on her way. >> You sure you thought that's my mom? She at home. >> Alicia, she said it wasn't going to make the trip. That's what she said. But she got somebody to come. Hey, is this >> Can you grab your shoes for me? >> Here. >> Just step right here for me real quick. >> Hey, I'm right here. I just put you on speaker with Missa Sarah and she just wanted to make sure that you were coming to get her children. >> See where she got a couple of 85. >> In the end, the woman was charged with felony theft, racketeering, conspiracy, and contributing to the delinquency of minors. Children should never be used as tools for criminal activity or taught to hide the truth. involving them only creates deeper consequences for everyone involved and can turn repeated bad decisions into serious criminal charges. This woman still seemed to believe that she was a great mother. >> So you'll get a citation. You'll have to go to court or something. >> Can I pay for that stuff? >> No, that's not how it works. >> When he came to my baby, you had an absence and I'm a mother at the end of the day. >> Okay. On February 24th, officers were dispatched to a Walmart after receiving a report of a woman who was allegedly shoplifting while accompanied by her children. When officers approached her, she even separated the unpaid merchandise when asked about it. >> I need to pay for it. >> Oh, I'll pay for it, but I wasn't. >> You got your ID on you? >> Mhm. It's connected. >> Just let me see your ID. We'll we'll figure it out. ID here. Let me get it. >> Just come to the loss prevention office and we'll figure it out with your ID. >> Oh, I'm good. >> You ever been in trouble before? >> You never been in trouble. This won't be a big deal. But they were watching you and they said that you didn't pay for a lot of the stuff. So, let's go in here and see what's going on and >> we'll figure it out. Just I'm >> sorry. >> No, that's fine. I'll tell you what. Since your kids in there, we'll let you push the buggy over there. Okay. >> They can push it. >> Well, you can push it. Your kids in it. >> Push it. >> Your kids in it. >> But I can pay for whatever. >> We'll figure it out. 3369 central. >> Sorry guys, my init condition for >> I'm out. >> The woman was taken to the loss prevention office so the merchandise could be reviewed and recovered. [snorts] She remained cooperative throughout the process, but her behavior did not show any real sense of guilt. >> I have a lot of stuff. >> Yeah, it's going to take a minute. >> I just spent $400 something. >> You spent that much? This is $400 and something dollars. >> Yeah, >> clothes are expensive for kids. >> Yeah, they are. Do you ever >> I'm trying A lot of the stuff I gave her back said I didn't want. So, I'm trying to figure out what did I >> Well, they were watching you on video and they said you didn't scan a bunch of it, but we'll see. We'll see. >> A bunch of >> Well, they some of I mean you if you paid that much >> anywhere. I know this. >> You don't have to be afraid, dude. It's okay. >> Hey, buddy. It's okay. >> Who's that on your shirt? Is that Woody? >> 228. >> What's in that bag up there? >> What is that? >> Oh, a rebuff bag. >> No, I don't know where the rece >> can you go see if it's at the thingy. >> Well, they can. Yeah, they can pull it up. She paid for a lot. >> Yeah, >> it's going to be a minute. >> It would have just had to It would have just came out, right? You just can't find it. I don't Yeah, I can't find it. It's probably one of the bags. >> All right. Are they getting you a bag? >> Okay. >> Here, help me just put this stuff in there. >> Absolutely. >> You paid on your credit card, right? >> Yeah. >> Well, we're just, you know, >> we're just going to see. >> Well, they were watching the cameras. They said you didn't pay for some stuff. So, >> who are they? >> The Walmart loss prevention people. All the people who work here, >> it's their shop. >> While the loss prevention team confirmed the value of the merchandise, the officers discussed the situation among themselves and shared a few observations about the incident. Think >> it's just going to be a citation. >> She uh she didn't pay for a lot of stuff. They're sorting it out now. She paid for like $400 worth of stuff, but she didn't scan about half of it. So, >> she has done citations that were >> But none shoplifting? >> No. >> That then it doesn't matter. So, here's her ID. They're still going through all the stuff now. She's got her baby with her. She's being cooperative. I told her she's probably just going to get a citation, get barred. So, >> all right. I'll go ahead and get to this. >> All right. So, we were looked at your criminal history. It doesn't look like you had any shoplifting. Looks like you got some thefts that got dismissed. >> Yeah, that was like situation. >> It doesn't matter because it's only shoplifting can matter. So, what she's doing is she's working on a citation. So, you'll get a citation. You'll have to go to court or something. >> Can I pay for that stuff? >> No, that's not how it works. I mean, once they catch you, they catch you. So, just let them do their thing. And you can take the stuff you paid for, obviously, but uh just let them do their thing. I'm going to leave my bag in there. Because she had a large amount of merchandise mixed in with the items she had paid for, [music] the inspection was not finished yet. However, the impatient one was the suspect herself as she kept urging them to speed up the process. I'm >> not trying to be rude. Could you please tell them cuz they put a pep in to go the same way they rush and charge me, they didn't rush so I can go home. my baby ready to go. >> They've got a process they've got to go through. It's going to take some time. >> But at the end of the day, I have a 4 week old baby and I'm ready to go home. It does not matter. >> Y'all may not be moms, but you know, end of day, I'm a mom. >> Okay. >> They move to be funny and I know it, but I'm not going to let nobody get me out of character and go to jail. At the end of day, they're not trying to be funny. They want to get you out of here, too. >> Trust me, they're being funny. I know somebody being funny and I'm black already. >> Has nothing to do with it. >> Trust me. I'm black. She's being funny. >> I don't understand being a black person. They're being funny. >> And we're just waiting for that so I can um finish filling out your citation. >> Come on. I ain't got nothing on my background. The police kept asking me that. Oh, no, sir. 29 not 12 month. >> So you were on probation for theft by taking that was 12 months. When was that? >> That was not 12 months from now. >> It was like I was like 23 2. >> It was at the way me and this girl I was working with. >> At this point the receipt had been verified and the officers explained what she would have to face next. >> You will have to go to court on April 11th at 9:00 a.m. for that. And then if you can sign right there on the X. It's not admission of guilt. It's just saying you received it. >> Ain't no way in the hell I had almost $200 worth of stuff together. I don't believe that. >> They really did be doing it tonight. Ain't no way in hell. >> Well, we've got it. We'll just list it all in the report for you. And >> I don't believe that. But I pay for it. No way. No $200 worth of >> We'll have that video in court so you'll be able to review it then. >> I mean, I ain't at you all that. your mouth really smart. >> Oh, I'm just saying. >> I'm just saying, too. It's not >> Should nobody but the police be talking to me. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Like she did say, you'll have the video available in court to review. >> At the end of the day, like I said before, when she came back, I do be feeling like they be trying to be funny. >> And I don't like the end of the day, it is what it is. Okay? And I ain't say nothing about you doing your job, but my thing is when it came to my baby, you had an attitude. And I'm a mother at the end of the day. I ain't saying that. Okay. My kids are way more important than little funky merchandise ais. I'm being honey. >> All right. >> Cuz I was on the street for real, bro. I'm not going to tolerate nobody disrespect me when it come to my never disrespected you. >> You really did. Cuz you trying to tell me about my heard. >> But y'all didn't need me here to do any of that. So, if you if you feel like there is an issue with that, you can talk to um the manager here and you can file a report with them about that. >> Oh, no. I'm fine. I'm done. I don't have no issue. >> She was charged with theft by shoplifting and received a citation along with a 2-year ban from the Walmart property. She later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months of probation [music] and $395 in court costs. Being cooperative does not erase the consequences of a theft. Taking responsibility early is far better than trying to argue your way out once the evidence has already been documented. Next, this shoplifting mother showed absolutely no concern for the crime she had committed. >> Is somebody coming with them? >> I'm calling. >> Okay, >> I got the kids on me. I'm under arrest. On the 2nd of September 2024, officers [snorts] stopped a vehicle believed to be involved in fleeing after thefts from multiple stores. Inside the vehicle were a woman and several children. Here is what happened next. >> Hi. Do you have your ID with you? >> Oh, no. Actually, I don't have >> You don't have your license on you? Okay. Can you turn the car off? Yeah, I believe I got it. Just start me at 10 to Columbia. Hey, keep the keys out of the ignition. >> Keep the keys out of the ignition. >> What initially appeared to be a smooth stop quickly took an unexpected turn when the woman suddenly made a dangerous move, putting both herself and others at risk. >> Do not move. Get out of the car now. Get out of the car. Get out of the car. >> Stop. What are you doing? >> Hold on. Okay. Let me just make a call for the kid. >> No, not right now. >> I'm not going to move. I got you. Y got I'm not moving. Tay T. Let's head to the cops. Okay. Don't get scared. Yes, sir. Turn and face the car. Do >> you have anything on you I got to know about? >> No. >> No. >> No. >> Knives? >> No. >> What's in your pocket? >> Nothing. >> Your what? >> Nothing. >> There's something in your front pocket. >> No. Check it. >> Just do you have pants under these? >> Yeah. >> Is there something in there? >> It's okay, guys. It's okay. It's okay. >> What's under your pants? Leggings. >> Yeah. I'm not moving. I'm not moving. I got you. >> Your legs, >> baby. Watch out. Watch out. Watch out. >> Hey, look, buddy. Watch you up here, buddy. >> Do you have your ID with you? >> Where is it? >> In here. >> Yeah. >> Just lean up against the car. >> She did not seem concerned about her family member as he got out of the vehicle. Instead, it was the officers who had to take the initiative and ask her to find someone to come and pick him up. >> Can I call somebody to get the car? >> You can call somebody to get the kids? >> Yeah. >> Who do you want to call? Yeah, I'll cover you. Can you turn the car off? >> We'll take care of it. >> In a field. Can you just call because they the kids are here? >> Mama. >> Grandma, I need you to come get Call my dad so you can come get the kids. >> What are you pulling in your pants? >> Nothing. I'm fixing my >> Is somebody coming to get them? >> I'm calling. >> Okay. >> I got the kids on me. I'm under arrest. >> I know. I'm lucky she got stuck. >> She would not have stuck. >> She She would have rammed me. >> Think so? >> Yeah. >> She's very comfortable with them. Like she's like agile or something. >> Shortly afterward, officers searched her vehicle and discovered a large amount of Nike and Victoria's Secret merchandise, suggesting that the total value of the stolen goods was far from insignificant. >> We were all on this road cuz she wasn't leaving. But I p I pulled up in front of her here >> and she immediately started to drive forward. This whole seat is loaded with Nike. Victoria's Secret. I got some questions for you if you go for time. >> Okay. >> I'm gonna read you your Miranda rights real quick. Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Any you say Ken will abuse against you in a court of law. Having these rights in mind, do you wish to wave those rights and talk to me right now? >> No. >> No. Okay. >> What's your question? Oh, but I'm not What's your question? I don't have to answer. >> I'm not I'm not asking any questions unless you agree to talk. >> I agree to talk. >> Okay. You You're willing to wave your right to a lawyer and talk with me, >> but I don't have to answer you. >> That's right. >> I can ask for a lawyer at any time. >> Okay. Go ahead. So, you're good with me asking a question without a lawyer and you'll decide. >> If I want to speak to a law, if I want >> if you want a lawyer at after I ask a question. My question to you is where did all the Nike merchandise come from? >> It's mine. >> It's yours. >> Yes. >> From where? >> The store. >> Which one? >> Kohl's. >> Okay. Kohl's in Enfield. >> No. >> Kohl's is another town. >> Yes. >> Okay. Do you have receipts for those? >> Um, Apple Pay. Yeah. >> Okay. Would you mind showing me your Apple Pay receipts? Like if I have to show proof in order to get anything back, I got you. It's not. >> Okay. I mean, yeah, that's that's kind of what I'm looking for right now because if we don't have proof that it's yours, presumably based on the call type, we would seize it and hold it until we get the proof. >> Okay. >> Are you going to show me the receipts so I can just keep it in your car? >> What's up? >> Hey, it's okay. One of them is right here. Two of them from the cash up transaction. Apple. Apple. >> So, it was all So, my last question is, why didn't you just stop? Why did you take off? I have anxiety. >> Anxiety. >> Yeah. >> While she denied stealing anything, another officer went back to the store and heard a very different story from the employees. >> You guys, is there any chance she came in and out before you guys saw her stealing the one item? >> It's certainly possible. Yeah. >> Can we check the cameras for that? >> Yeah. I mean, it would just be kind of a crapshoot to >> Yeah, cuz her car, the passenger side, was completely loaded with Nike merchandise. Could she have her kids in here with her? >> No, they were in the car. >> And where was the car parked? Like a Was it a handicap spot or something? >> No, it was like midway down. >> Okay. >> Just a lot. >> Just I mean it's a quiet car. So >> yeah. >> How did you guys know it was on? >> We watched her get in >> and just take off. Yeah. >> Oh, so no keys were input or anything? >> No, there was no way. Like she got in so quick cuz I was just come back from break when my system manager coming outside like watching said, "Look at her." And then we thought she was going to get the passenger seat cuz you could like see that it was on like the brake lights, whatever. >> Okay. >> And then she got in before the door was even closed. She was already driving away. I'm guessing she's not being super cooperative of where she got it all >> a little bit. But she's saying like, "Oh, I previously purchased all that." Gotcha. Okay. So, Jasmine right there, who works up front, got the bad vibe from her. >> Okay. >> So, that's when Heat. Heat. N. In the end, the woman was charged with one count of endangering a child, three counts of larseny, one count of possessing a shoplifting device, one count of interfering with police, one count of engaging officers in a pursuit, and six additional counts involving motor vehicle and child safety violations. s. [snorts] This case showed how quickly a theft investigation could escalate when a suspect chose to flee instead of cooperating with officers. Denying the theft did not erase the evidence, especially when surveillance footage and witness statements revealed what had actually happened. Next, this woman cared about her children so much that she resorted to stealing things for them. Aford? Are you getting it for your son? Just what's going on? >> You had your hand in the kid's pants. Did you stuff something in his in his pants? >> What did that? >> On the 17th of August 2024, police received a report from Marshalls about a woman who had been caught stealing from the store. Even worse, she had not come there alone. When officers approached her, she admitted to everything. >> Hey, Kelly. Officer Rumbler, of police. [clears throat] >> No. >> So, I understand you got caught stealing. Why were you doing that? >> Okay. It's not a forer. You getting it for your son? Just what's going on? I don't know. I >> It's just stupid even talking about it because I feel like no one believed you. >> Well, what's up? I Why don't they believe you? What's going on? >> Well, because I caught people before the Facebook mostly my sons at home because they had to watch their dad overdose and there they didn't ask for it. My son was talking about these things he wanted for school and him and his friends and I just saw it and I don't know bills at home like $500 and a half in the hospital right now. Sounds like you're going through a really hard time right now. >> The mother dismissed it as nothing more than a stupid mistake, but the loss prevention team told a different story, proving that her actions had been deliberate. a roach she concealed into her purse, including pair of headphones that she removed some alarm system on that we have. So, we got that back. Some toys that were taken. Um, this side had a tag that was removed off of it. And then we have a few other random things that uh there's some shopping bags for sure. >> Is there anything like else missing that we know about? >> Not that we know. That should account for everything. We didn't search it first cuz we're not allowed to. That's up to you guys if you want to. >> Kelly, why are we stealing this? This isn't something new. >> Yeah, you can stop acting sad >> cuz I've given you summons twice. Officer Deal's given you a summon and I believe officer Cero has as well. >> So why did we have we not learned our lesson? >> I thought I don't know. >> No, >> I don't know. >> Do we just not have money or what are we doing? >> No, I don't I had no business even coming and spending the money I had on that stuff. I >> Why do you have your kid out this late anyway? How old is he? >> He's three and a half. >> So, is he three or six? That's a big difference. Oh, okay. >> Obviously. Jeez Louise. So, the only thing she did pay for was the diapers. >> You know, everything there was paid for. Here's the other receipt, but she's been honest with us so far, as far as we know. She trespass. >> Go to the store for you in here or what? >> Besides the theft at this store, police also noticed bags of merchandise from other places, raising suspicions that this was not her first theft. This prompted the officers to ask if they could check her belongings. >> What do you think, Kelly? I know you stole from here. I know you stole them from Walmart. There's a Marshall's receipt in your bag and I see a Marshall bag on your seat. Is anything from there stolen? >> No. >> Do you mind if I check the receipt up to match? >> Yep. >> So, car unlocked? >> Yeah. >> If not, I know your key was in your purse cuz I put it back in there. >> I like to help. >> All right. Could you just step over here with my partner, please? Just leave it. >> What's that? Just set that back in there for me. Hey, buddy. Can I get in here? >> Grab your toys. Hold on to these guys. Okay, >> it's Spider-Man. >> So, there's a shirt in there. >> Straw. There's something in this. >> Did you check that cigarette pack? >> I did not yet. >> Oh, it's that's dope. Careful. >> Well, there I already opened it. There was like >> some type of gray stuff in here. >> It's probably heroin. >> Is that what that is? >> Uh, I don't know. Probably gray. It's probably some kind of heroin mix. So, be careful. >> Want to take a look at There's three of them. >> What's What is this? >> Okay. Well, the his dad just overdosed in front of them not that long ago. He's in I had to drop him off at um a silver living. >> It's not smart at all. And I I think it's [ __ ] too. It's sitting right in the center. We got a >> I have I I literally I don't I >> Well, here's here's the rub. It's yours now. Okay. So, you're getting arrested tonight. >> What came out of the pack? >> Cigarettes. I I promise. >> What do you mean? What's in it now? >> Nothing. and it's empty. >> With this new discovery, the case had gone far beyond simple theft. As the situation became more serious, Kelly grew increasingly emotional while sharing a story that seemed aimed at gaining sympathy. >> Everyone makes mistakes. >> I teach our tips all the time. >> I just dropped him off to so he just >> And you can you plead that in court. Okay. >> I know. No, you don't. You really don't. >> It's what I do for a living. >> I've seen much worse situations. >> Of course. >> I understand that. >> You don't. >> How long till he gets here? >> How long till he gets here? >> 7 minutes. >> Okay. >> And that's his child's father. >> Mhm. >> Or someone he's safe with this guy. >> Yes. >> Okay. What's his name? >> James. >> Last name. >> Behinger. >> Would it be cool if I show him the police car and all the lights and stuff? Yeah. You want to go see the lights on my car? >> You got a >> You got a a snooder in the council, three bindles of dope and a and a pipe in your back pocket and two torches in the car. >> Just took it out of the car when you guys went and said you were going to go look in the back. I did. I got scared. I >> It was sitting there. It was sitting there before we even got out here. >> Yeah, I know. It's first take. I literally just >> While waiting for the child's father to arrive, the female suspect was still allowed to remain free to care for her son. However, she soon made a move that caught the officer's attention. >> Hey, Kelly, come here real quick. Just ask her. We're not doing it, but you ask. >> So, when we when we were in there, you you had your hand in the kid's pants. Did you stuff something in his in his pants? >> Why did I have my hand in his pants? >> You had your whole hand in the kid's pants. >> No, there's absolutely I'm not checking your kid. >> Never do that. All right. >> You got I I'll pull his pants right now. >> No, we're not doing that. But it But >> me and him both saw it. And I just want to make sure you're not putting a kid in danger by by doing >> that. Don't be offended. I got to ask. >> A couple of us. >> He can take all the groceries >> and you can give him the key to the car if you want. So the car is not sitting up here. Does he have someone he can get to jockey this car back to your house? >> So we have to we don't have to tow it. That's fine. It can sit here overnight >> if he can get it out sometime tomorrow. Yeah. >> How you doing, sir? Good. >> Thanks for coming out. >> Come here, buddy. Hey, your daddy's here. I already got it. >> Hey, can you uh we're going to let the car sit here and not tow it. >> Can you if she gives you the key? >> I'll get it taken care of. >> Okay. I guess if it's got to sit overnight, that's fine. >> I'll get it moved tomorrow. >> Okay, perfect. >> And then >> we're going to let you you take all that's all the stuff she paid for. >> So, if you want to take get all that loaded up in that car. I don't know if there's any refrigerated. >> Yeah. >> Okay. I'll take it to the house. >> Okay. And as soon as you you take off, we'll do what we got to do here. What? Buddy, >> thank you. >> Bye. >> Hold on. >> You said you did get his stuff. >> Yeah. >> Okay. You don't have >> No, I was all the folds. All the folds that were >> How many times do I tell you? >> How many times we need to >> There's nothing you don't that I'm not already aware of. Kelly was charged with endangering children, possessing criminal tools, possession of controlled substances, [music] and theft. A difficult situation does not excuse repeated criminal behavior, or putting a child in danger. Once additional evidence is discovered, attempts to gain sympathy cannot erase the consequences of those choices. Next, this mother would have to confront her late regrets over the consequences of her actions. >> Food stage, can I do that? I don't know where I go. Let me pay for a [laughter] little. >> On the 30th of July 2024, officers were dispatched to Target's loss prevention office after receiving a report that a woman had been caught shoplifting with her son. Upon arriving at the scene, she immediately explained the boy's condition, seemingly trying to gain sympathy. >> What happened today? Obviously, I'm just getting here, so I didn't talk to anybody else except for you. >> Um, my son's birthday was this weekend. >> Mhm. >> And, um, it's been exciting weekend. And, uh, I I I spent a little money And um he got hurt today on a scooter and 911 came to our house, picked him up, changed the camera. Um he grabbed his elbow and >> what what happened once he got here? cuz we got and we left the hospital and came to get excuse me if you want. Do you have somebody that can come pick him up? >> He's coming. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you want to wait until your son's aren't here and we can talk after that? Clearly, the story she told was not the answer the officers needed. They quickly brought up the theft directly so they could get her statement about what had happened. What did you We know you stole items that's not really in question. So, what did you steal? >> Cat food, chicken. I think those are the So, there was things that weren't scammed. Um, [snorts] so did you just steal food items? Oh, so are those the things you stole? >> And why? And why did we do it today? Sorry. >> The woman was clearly overwhelmed with regret, causing her emotions to spiral. The officers then tried to calm her down and reassure her about what would happen to her family. Cuz I just want to make sure Carter's okay. You're 100% okay letting this guy take Carter? >> Yeah. >> Are you okay with it? >> Be a good dude. >> Yeah. >> Cuz if I need to fight him, let me know. I'll fight him. I'm joking. I'm not going to fight. Go get the dog. >> This dog's probably the meanest. >> So, should I go in? David, what should I do? >> Well, real quick, who is coming to pick him up? stuff on her like her ex-boyfriend. >> Do you guys still talk really at all? >> Yeah. Yeah. He was just at his birthday party this weekend at the home with us cuz like >> we were together 10 years. We've only been separated 6 months. >> Okay. I I just want that warmer knowing that he's going to spot. Okay. So if you stay [laughter] by later you already spoke to Jeff so sorry the way She was overwhelmed with regret after being caught, but she still held on to hope that she could change the outcome, repeatedly pleading with the officers for another chance. >> [panting] >> Oh God, just please let me pay for this. Please, God, let me pay for [laughter] this. >> I'll uh once once someone comes and picks him up, um we'll we'll talk. Okay. [laughter] >> Is she going to go once they pick him up? Hm. >> Is she going to go once they pick me up? >> I'm going to talk to her once once they come get you. Okay. >> He said he was 45 minutes away and then he was >> Can he go and like if I was in the store, I would allow him to go and >> it's he's responsible as he be. Like I said, I'm a widow. His daddy's dead. It's just I have no family. He has no We don't have family. It's just me and these boys [snorts] that work too [ __ ] difficult. [laughter] >> I think Harley's almost good if you want to do whatever. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Just one second. >> Afterward, her children were handed over to the boy's guardian. She seemed completely devastated, but clearly none of it changed what was going to happen to her. So take take a minute. I I'm not even going to try to say that I understand or you know because trust me I feel bad about this [laughter] sober. I'll explain after you have a minute. Okay. Nobody goes to jail. >> So [laughter] clean. That's I mean and obviously your son loves you so much and I can tell you right now, Deputy Schmidt and I like our hearts are breaking right now doing this because if there weren't extra factors the trespass. >> No, no, no. Are you on probation? Between the probation and then you have a non-extraditable warrant for failure to appear. >> Yeah, that is fair. >> So, so hear me out. >> Okay, that that for for underage consumption. So, that's I was 21. >> I understand. But when we have factors like that, I can't >> But that's the only >> I'm between the probation that's felony. >> But there's nothing else that you guys think I did, right? >> No. Okay, listen. Listen. Take a moment. Okay, I'm going to tell you. I'm being so serious with you. If I had the option to let you go, I would give you a court date and call it a day or forward charges to the state and let the state decide. But because of the failure to appear and you being on felony probation, I have to. >> The woman was charged with petite theft [music] and was arrested due to her felony probation violation and failure to appear warrant. >> [snorts] >> Shoplifting can quickly become far more serious when other legal issues are already involved. No matter how emotional the situation becomes, pleading for sympathy cannot erase the consequences of breaking the law. The woman showed no shame at all as she came face to face with the consequences of her actions. >> I'm not [ __ ] On the 15th of September 2023, officers were dispatched to a Walgreens after receiving reports of a woman suspected of shoplifting. When they approached her, she appeared completely calm, as if she was ready to face the officer. >> I'm officer Bana with Police Department. The reason I'm contacting you is >> employees have seen you unpackaging some stuff and putting stuff in your purse. >> No, I didn't unpack nothing earlier. You can look. >> Okay. Do you have an ID on you, ma'am? >> No, I don't. >> No. I've not done anything wrong. >> Okay. >> No, no, look. No. What you're doing is you're accusing me of something. Now, can I tell you something? I've not done any No, I'm not. Listen to me, please, sir. I've not done anything wrong. I'm showing you my back. >> I No, listen. Please. I have not done anything wrong. >> What is your name, ma'am? >> No. You can tell me to leave the store. Listen, sir. >> Call your No. Call your supervisor. Call your No. Call >> No. No. I'm not going to put my I'm not going to fight you. Call your supervisor. >> I'm going to detain you because the way you're behaving. >> No, please do not. I'm You ask you to call your supervisor. I'm not behaving in any type of way. >> You can ask me to leave the store. No, listen. I'm going to identify. >> No, you do not. You have no right to identify me. You can look in my bag. >> I don't want to find you. >> Please don't. Please don't. I'm not I'm walking. >> She gradually escalated the situation with her uncooperative attitude. Her actions that followed even led to a charge of resisting arrest. Sir, I'm not resist. >> Yes, you are. Stop. Stop. [snorts] Andrew, help. >> Ma'am, please >> do anything wrong. You explain like that. wrong. >> Get your hand off of it then if you're not doing anything wrong. >> That's why I had >> something. Okay. By the way, >> I do. They're yours. Do you walked in? No. No. >> Okay. >> Do you have any injuries? >> Yeah, I do. I need medic. >> Okay. >> She was then escorted outside to prevent further disruption inside the store. Instead of showing any remorse, she appeared to play the victim in an apparent attempt to avoid further questioning about the incident. >> So when they inventory that we'll get her name. >> Yeah. >> And what was your complaint as far as needing medics? Ma'am, >> I can't breathe. I got slammed by my face. >> You can't breathe? >> I like some ice. >> Okay. >> Sorry. >> Do you have any medical conditions we should be concerned about? >> Okay, ma'am. What's your first name? >> Alison. >> Alise. L I Z E. >> A L I Z E. Okay. What's your last name? >> Garcia. >> Okay. What's a good phone number for you? >> I don't have your name for a second. While you're doing identifying her, >> what's your name? Can we start off with that? >> What's your name, ma'am? So, Bananao did use force. He's in there sweating away. We have two individuals. She's the one that he got into use of force with that other female that showed up. They had like a bit of a miniature conversation in front of us. So, she's actually being detained. Also, I don't know what crime we have yet, but uh she's complaining of being slammed on her face. >> Okay. >> She was opening food items like chugging milk and had possibly concealed stuff in her purse. Had been in the bathroom for like an hour, I think. >> Meanwhile, officers began questioning another woman believed to be her friend. Her attempt to help her friend resist the officers ultimately led her into this situation. >> You lady right over there that we have to take. >> She's your friend. What's her out of your >> What's that? >> Tiff. >> Tiff. >> Is that short for anything? >> You just know her as Tiff. Okay. How long have you known her? >> Quite a while. >> Quite a while. >> Boyfriend came out. While officers were questioning the other suspect, the original shoplifting suspect suddenly did something outrageous that [music] instantly sent the situation back into chaos. Taking >> Hey, it's Tiffany Pope. >> Why? That's not You're obviously fine then, right? If you're running around. >> Okay, better in my car. And that right there, keep an eye on him. >> Ma'am, >> hey, I'm gonna open the door real quick. I'm Sergeant NZ. >> I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions. Are you willing to talk to me? >> I'm fine. >> Are you willing to talk to me? >> What's up? >> Uh, what happened inside? >> Um, I didn't want to go to jail until um, >> here I am now. >> Okay. Um, why didn't you want to go to jail? >> Cuz I hate jail. >> Okay. Okay. >> And I knew I had warrants and he started asking my name and I hadn't done nothing wrong. >> Okay. Did you like try to walk away? Did you Did you >> Yeah, I tried to and he stopped me. >> How did he stop you? >> He like blocked me with his body. >> Did he ever Did you ever Did he ever identify himself as a police officer? >> Yeah, he did. He didn't do nothing wrong. Can you just take me to jail, please? >> Just a couple more questions and then you can then we can get you on your way. Um, did you know he was a police officer? >> Yes, dude. I knew he was a cop. >> Okay. All right. Um, are you hurt in any way? >> I'm fine. >> Any injuries? anything, >> please? No, we can go on fine. >> Okay. Um, I do have Well, so I do got to take a picture of you. Um, and I'll have the officer do that once he gets to the jail to take a picture of you. Okay. >> Thank you. >> Her actions only made the evidence against her [music] even harder to deny. At that point, officers explained the charges she was now facing. >> Is the Venmo card in your name? >> No, it's my friend Max. >> Your friend Maxmore? >> Okay. And that was in the purse? >> Yeah. >> But the purse belongs to Yeah, >> that's her face. >> Yeah. >> What's her name again? >> It's I I just call her a bit. I I don't um her name is I don't know her name. >> Okay, >> got it. >> I'll look into that. >> There's still a bunch of other felonies. >> Okay. Okay. >> So, the shoplifting, I don't know. You don't contest all that stuff in court, but trying to take my taser, headbutting me, you know, it's nothing personal. I'm not upset about it, but you know, it's a crime. We're going to go in. Um, we're going to do things peacefully. If you run and you try to fight me, it's not going to end well for you. >> No. Why would I do that? I'm already in cuffs. >> Well, you tried to run away from us when you're in cuffs. >> Well, that's cuz I thought that um had a chance of not going to jail. >> In the end, the woman was charged with shoplifting, larseny, fourthderee battery upon a peace officer, thirdderee felony disarming a peace officer, concealing identity, and resisting arrest. Trying to flee, [music] resist officers, or hide information can quickly lead to additional criminal charges that carry far more serious consequences than the original offense. >> Just it's it's too late for that. It's Yeah, it's already too late. You've already walked out. >> What? Oh my god. >> You don't think they're going to let me out? I can't. >> On the 20th of February, 2026, police were dispatched to Walmart's loss prevention office after receiving a report of a woman detained for suspected theft. Upon arrival, multiple suspicious details about the merchandise were pointed out. >> Good afternoon. >> We haven't gotten everything just yet. Oh, >> but if you look like just on those boots alone, those boots are $56, but it's got a tag on it for >> Okay. >> And I'm just going by the tags are on it. Okay. >> 366 cheese. >> How much? >> 366. >> 36. Yep. There's one. Have you been arrested for any kind of retail theft or anything in the past? >> Okay. >> And was going with what was on it. >> I had a girl at the register. >> Monroe County, Florida. Theft and forgery. >> That was 10 years ago. >> Okay. These are these are for life though. >> So once you >> over 10 years ago >> Yeah. But once you have one for for the rest of your life if you get one that makes it automatically a felony. If you take a stick of gum it becomes a felony. Oh yeah. >> But see the thing is is that purchase what I thought the tax were. >> So do I get reimbured for whatever. >> She did not understand the seriousness of her situation. More notably, despite switching price tags, the woman still intended to deny it and shift the blame onto the store. >> Well, we're waiting for her to come back with the training receipt so that he knows how much the amount was that wasn't paid for. >> Okay. So, do I get a difference for what was scanned? >> I mean, we'll tell you whenever. Yeah, we'll tell you >> what y'all owe me for what was scanned because everything was scanned. >> So, there was a price paid. So, how many items had these tickets, these stickers on them? >> Quite a few of them. >> Like I I don't know what the prices were for each one, right? >> Normally, we wouldn't differentiate the difference. >> That's okay. >> We would just I mean, cuz you >> I'm just going with what was on the items. So, I don't know. >> And usually whenever tags are wrapped around things like that, we don't think that the checkout was honest like it was supposed to be. We get a lot of people taking tags and sticking them to things. I understand >> comp a little bit more complex. >> I mean, if I get the difference, I don't know what the difference adds up to, but if not, it's okay, too. >> To see what he wants to do, the guy that just like is the boss. >> It doesn't I'm okay with it either. >> Normally, we don't uh make up the difference. >> Normally not. She only questioned who would cover the tax difference, clearly showing she had no intention of taking responsibility. At that moment, the employee returned with the total value of the loss she had caused. >> So, $198 is going to total up to be off of it. That's what the the theft and also the uh stuff that wasn't. And then this is what she actually scanned and paid for was >> 31. So, 160 bucks. >> Yeah. At least [clears throat] still 160 bucks. >> Okay. All right. Do I get a difference for it or >> It's 31. No, it's actually $31 is is is all that you paid for, but it was $200 after taxes is 215, but we don't do taxes usually on that. So, it was $198 of merchandise that was either stolen or ticket switched. So, it was a different price. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> Well, I'll be going through a live person from that one. I'm not doing self check out anymore. Crazy. Even though I had a little bit of help, you know, with her with the big items. >> Yeah. You have somebody's going to be able to come and get your uh stuff. >> What? Me? >> Yeah. >> Come get my Come get this stuff. >> Yeah. To come and get your stuff. >> I'm I'm outside. I'm parked outside. >> I know, but you're going to go with me. [music] >> In reality, she still believed that she could simply pay the difference and walk away. But the police revealed an outcome she did not expect. Take a look at her reaction. You're going to be placed under arrest for it's a felony. I explained that to you a minute ago. >> Oh my god. No. Please. >> No. I mean, they don't they don't have any leeway on it. I mean, that's their policy. >> Yeah. >> No, I didn't. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I mean, that's No, please. >> That's quite a bit. >> What? >> Yeah. The the Okay, so the dollar the dollar amount >> the difference. >> Yeah, but that we're way past that. The dollar amount part of it isn't the issue because if it was $300, it would be a felony in of itself.
