Cmdr. Dobson: I'm Craig Dobson. I'm the Commander for Central Precinct. I've been working for about just over 24 years now within the police bureau and thoroughly enjoy my job. Central Precinct is probably one of the most diverse areas. We have heavy industry as well as our commercial center. Our core of the city is downtown. We've got everything from the West Hills and the largest park to residential areas as well. This is the edge right here. Our community is great down here, they're tighten up. We've got several different community groups down here between the businesses and the neighborhood associations. We have a lot of support from the community. Regularly, I go to community meetings, and they are asking that they can have officers on walking beats, just have contact with officers and the police, and it's been refreshing to be able to go to the officers and say, "Hey, the public really wants you out there and really needs you out there, and they want that connection, that one-on-one time." The challenge we face is we just simply don't have the bodies to be able to do all of the things that we would like to be able to do. Over the last 24 years that I've been down here, I've seen lots of changes, some good, some bad, but we face the challenge is especially coming out of 2020, how do we recover as a city? How do we get businesses back into downtown? How do we make people feel safe with increasing crime, with increasing murder rates, dealing with the challenges of homelessness in the downtown area. All of that make it extremely challenging to deal with the day-to-day regular calls that we take, but the officers that are down here are down here because they want to be, and so they face the challenges and they're always up to the task of what's next and how do we work through those problems. Several big projects that we've had downtown were working with the Old Town Chinatown community, and part of that was working to identify criminal elements down there. We've worked several missions, drug missions in the area, and we've worked in the southeast area and lower southeast area to help decrease the criminal element down in that area. I think our biggest success thus far has been our Entertainment district, and what we saw was we had some serious shooting issues in that downtown core area, and so we reformatted and reformulated our Entertainment district. There we have a group of officers in a sergeant that work strictly in the evenings, dealing with the bar events and the scenes down there. Since we've had it up and running, we've seen a huge drop in the instances of violent crime in that area. Dispatch: Can I have the [inaudible 00:02:59]. Cmdr. Dobson: The amount of compassion that I see my officers that they put into the job is amazing. Our job is to hold people accountable, and yet we also are human beings and see the people in their plight. They're not there just to deal with criminality, they're dealing with people. Everybody has issues and we try to help them with those issues. And so, I appreciate every one of them and what they do and the efforts that they put in to keeping people safe and serving the community.
