As a unit, we are assigned to target problem areas in our central district. The central bike unit is a very high-paced unit. Uh we have 12 guys, two supervisors. If you're like the kind of officer that likes to work hard, uh you should be in no rush to leave, and you would really like what you do here. Our main focus usually is the light rail platform, cuz that seems to bring a lot of our our criminals who come from other cities. Having a bike is a is a huge advantage when you're enforcing the light rail. On the bicycle, you can slow it down a lot, take your time, observe your surroundings, and that's usually how we end up finding people. It's Arizona, it's hot. You're going to have your windows up and blasting your AC. You're not going to be able to hear anything. Um we don't have that option, right, when we're on a bicycle. So, your ears are perked up, you're looking for crime, and if you're being attentive, you'll be able to pick up on the smallest of noises, wouldn't it be? Like somebody who just finished smoking drugs, crumpling up their tin foil, you know, uh throwing a glass pipe and breaking it. Like you the chattering the small chattering behind a an electrical box or behind a wall. It's very distinct noises that you can pick up while you're riding on a bike. We've been able to stop robberies in progress. We've been able to observe hand-to-hands like on our bike, hand-to-have drug hand-offs, people smoking blatantly like drugs right in front of us, a lot of violent crimes that we've been able to show up to and help patrol with.
