[Music] this is my beat speed 32 goes from main street down to broadway and from this area a little bit down to about on the school a little past there are beads smaller but well 32 is smaller but it gets the same amount of call volume as the other beads i think national police women day is really important because it shows a representation of women in the police force which isn't normally seen so it's a good day to celebrate the few of us that are here so women in policing to me is recognizing women in a male dominated field and how we are working our way towards a positive role model in this field at one point there was no women in policing now you know it's progressively getting more and more and more it's a great day to have the recognition but at the end of the day we're all here in uniform fighting the same fight and it's hard to see me any different from anybody else out there it is great that we have the day but law enforcement as a whole is a profession i think that we should all recognize the guys include you as one of their own your partners you're with them through thick and thin and i think it's you're getting more women and you're seeing more women in policing which is really good in my class for the academy there were seven girls which is really high in terms of how many girls they used to be before our class so i think it's women are going to start getting higher in the police field [Music] hello sir somebody talking with me outside how are you doing today i don't have a seat on the bench for me you've been hanging out here yeah well i saw you got your drink i just want you to know that the owners they didn't want you hanging out in there since you're asking people for money and stuff their private business so they want you trespass basically the owner called because a homeless man came in and he was hanging out there for a few hours begging for money from other customers he got a drink but he finished it so they wanted to be moved along so we added him to the trespass log gave him some resources for where he'd get food so he's not hanging out in businesses like this uh yeah it's a really nice guy so say it was a good call it is best advice to start with your best foot forward and coming prepared for the physical task that is being a law enforcement officer there are some guidelines on our website where you can actually look to see what we require in a good starting they have orientations through our hiring unit that actually give you a generalized workout that you can be doing to prepare yourself to enter an academy but the better prepared you are not only mentally and physically the better you're going to do coming from a sports background myself yes i think physical fitness is a big component especially when you're going into the academy when they focus a lot on physical fitness when i was preparing i was trying to run as much as possible doing sprints and doing the sit-ups and push-ups that they have online to know what you have to get in a certain amount of time i would say start looking at policy arizona revised statutes i mean you're going to learn it throughout the academy but just having a little notch up helps a lot you need to know how to use your words and kind of get them to do what you want and you can't yell at them you have to just be sometimes nice you have to read who they are in order to understand how to get them to kind of do what you want in a sense so it's not necessarily you have to be huge tough i mean i you have to continue training you have to continue working out and that's what i do i mean i am littler compared to all the other officers but i think if you just continue training that that works magic obviously if i see someone that's much larger than me for sure it you know you you look and you're like okay i need a couple more units here to help me out i don't think that's necessarily something i think that's pretty much what any officer would do though if they see someone bigger than them okay we need more than one person here to kind of handle this situation i am still very much involved out in the field there's a lot of oversight involved with being that patrol sergeant specific to being a sergeant over a different specialty unit there's an administrative task to a lot of the things that we do but overall i'm still out making contact with people i'm engaged working calls with my guys there are a lot of calls that require a supervisor to copy or respond to so i am actually in about uh we responded to a suicidal juvenile who was attempting to take a large amount of prescription medication after verbal altercation with his mom unfortunately his child we're familiar with who struggles with coping mechanisms right now they deal with a lot of it he's struggling with online school because of prohibit and it's frustrating for him so he was acting out and yelling and throwing some things around the house and threatening to kill himself mom was doing everything she could to intervene once we got here officers actually observed him trying to kick out a window and we're able to detain him pretty quickly based on him being in a state of crisis we've reached out mesa fire and medical they responded the scene and they're actually going to transport him for some behavioral health services i would just say believe in yourself because in high school when i would tell people that i want to be a police officer they're like you're too nice and for some reason i agreed with them and it's not the case you can be a nice officer i mean everyone here is super nice i think it's the same advice i would give anyone and that's just work hard you know be respectful and make sure you do your studies and things like that but i think hard work is the biggest component of all of it and don't expect anything to be handed to you just keep pushing through well we were actually doing a community event at red robin it was one of the tip of cops and a family came in and a little girl looked at me and she's like mom it's a girl police officer i was like oh hi and she's like i didn't know that you could do that and i was like yeah so i gave her a sticker and we took some pictures so she was definitely shocked and i think it was good that she got to see that it is nice to see sometimes the little girls that are they're shocked they don't understand hey that's a girl in a uniform that is that does it it brightens my day i've been on calls for service where they are just completely taken back by the fact that there's a female in uniform side by side with the guys doing the exact same thing and that's huge it's an impact that i didn't have as a child growing up and i wish i could afford that to more girls of that age so they can see the possibility
