Hello everyone. I'm Detective Brandy George with the Mesa Police Department. This critical incident community briefing will provide you with information about an officer-involved shooting that occurred here in Mesa. You are about to see relevant video footage and learn about evidence and police procedures related to this case so you can better understand what happened based on what we know right now. Mesa Police Department conducts thorough use of force investigations. Typically, investigators interview multiple witnesses, view numerous hours of video footage, and analyze a significant amount of forensic evidence. These investigations take time to complete, which means things could change as additional evidence is collected, analyzed, and reviewed. This video will not draw any conclusions about whether these officers acted consistent with our policy until all the facts are known and the investigation is complete. In this video, we will be sharing our officers' body-worn camera videos as well as 911 calls and any other surveillance video obtained as part of this investigation. We do want to warn you anytime a police officer uses force, the images and information can be graphic, disturbing, and difficult to watch and the video may contain strong language. Viewer discretion is strongly advised, especially for young children and sensitive viewers. Hello, I am Sergeant Chuck Trapani with the Mesa Police Department. On February 8th, 2022, Mesa Police officers responded to a family fight call in the area of 300 North Sycamore in Mesa where a mother was reporting her adult son was being confrontational outside her home and was possibly armed with a gun. 911 Yeah, we have um my son we have an order of protection that hasn't been served yet. He's talking to him through the door. He claims he has a gun with him. But we don't know if he has like a toy toy guns. You know, not real guns, but we don't know. He's an addict. Knocking our lights out. At about 3:20 a.m. officers arrive at the entrance to the housing complex of 302 North Sycamore and locate the son that was reported being confrontational and possibly armed with a gun outside his parents' home. Officers begin to give the son, later identified as 36-year-old Brian Schneider, verbal commands. Here is video footage of one of the officer's body worn cameras as he arrives at the scene. As the officers give Schneider commands, he raises his arm pointing a silver handgun into the air and then lowers his arm pointing the handgun in the direction of the officers. This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. GET ON THE GROUND. BOTH OFFICERS FIRED THEIR DUTY weapons striking Schneider. Schneider then falls to the ground and is later pronounced deceased at the scene. Here is video footage from the second officer's body worn camera. During the course of the investigation, a handgun was recovered near Schneider. This handgun was later determined to be a replica handgun. This is a stock photograph of the replica handgun that was recovered and pointed at responding officers. At this point in the investigation, we know that one officer shot six lethal rounds. He has been with the department for 2 years. The second officer shot three lethal rounds. He has been with the department for a year and a half. This was the first officer-involved shooting for both officers and the fourth Mesa Police Department officer-involved shooting in 2022. All the information and evidence in this case were presented to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review. Thank you for taking the time to watch this critical incident community briefing.
