Commander Jones: I'm Tina Jones. I'm the very proud commander at North precinct. I lead one of the three precincts in the bureau. I think the best precinct and I'm a little biased, but we have a phenomenal team. North precinct covers over 58 square miles in Portland. It's a very long kind of narrow area. North Portland has just a really incredible history and we just drove through St. John's, it was established in the early 1800s. And we have a real history of resilience and just phenomenal people who live here, who work here. And our officers reflect that as well. They come to work with passion, with compassion, empathy, and just a level of grit and determination to serve this really wonderful community. Commander Jones: So you can start seeing down here, these are all the tows that are lined up. So the neighborhood response team is a full time day shift team, typically focus on livability issues, kind of chronic problems. Most recently, a lot of their work has been focused on a lot of the camps that are connected to criminal activity, areas where it's impacting the safety and livability. We've had some really significant issues out here. Hi guys. I was down here, not all that long ago when you guys were out here clearing out and I just, Speaker 2: You can go. Commander Jones: I'm amazed. Speaker 2: It's 300 yards more back in there. Commander Jones: So here's a catalytic converter. These get ripped off all the time and they're being sold for the metals. Speaker 2: This is six truck load and three 40 yard dumpsters already gone. Commander Jones: So this is a huge improvement from where it was yesterday. It's really work that our neighborhood response team does each week. They're addressing different areas, but it's very, very important work that they're doing to increase safety and livability in North Portland. We recently not that long ago, came out and our neighborhood response team did some significant cleanups out here on Marine Drive. And almost every car that was driving by was honking and waving and saying, thank you. And it was really mood lifting to just hear that support. We are experiencing just a continuation of challenging times. COVID that put a real stress on everyone. We continue to have challenges with staffing levels that are at historic lows. And then in addition, just going through what the officers went through with night after night, after night of civil unrest and a lot of violence that was directed at them, and we're still recovering from that. Commander Jones: We've witnessed repeated incidents where officers are having guns pulled on them, people shooting at them at a rate that nobody I know who has been in this career, some of them for over 30 years have seen in their careers. I just want to express my extreme gratitude to the men and women, both our sworn and professional staff who continue to show up every single day and give it their best. We have a wonderful community and they deserve exceptional public service and the caliber of people that we have, who continue to show up every single day and do this job really is meaningful. And it goes unrecognized sometimes, but it doesn't go unnoticed.
