I do want to, you know, offer my condolences to uh Landon Watson's family. He's the young man uh who was killed. You know, law enforcement does not come to work to kill people. Uh on the flip side of that coin, law enforcement doesn't come to work to be killed. And what we had the other night could have very easily ended up with a Daytona Beach sergeant being killed. So at 9:28 we get our first 911 call at 1402 Derbishshire Road for somebody stabbed. 9:31 we get a second call that somebody showed up at a doorstep of another home saying they had been stabbed. We're on location at 9:34 p.m. And based on everything that we're hearing, there's possible victims inside of the home, other victims inside of the home, the stabbers inside of the home. We call for mutual aid. And what that means is surrounding police departments now have the authority to enter the county jurisdiction and take law enforcement action. And with that, Daytona Beach shows up, Holly Hill shows up, and uh Orman Beach shows up. So based on the the crime scene, there's blood all over the door. There's blood going into the house. The decision is made to tactically enter the house to look for more victims. And you'll hear the officers and the deputies on body camera footage say that. So they form up. They do exactly what they do, what they're trained to do. Holly Hill officer is at point on the shield. You'll also hear that they call for less lethal. The less lethal is in that line. And then they head in and you hear them as they're entering the house saying, "We're here looking for victims. We're here looking for victims. They're looking for people who are who are hurt." And as they go in, you'll see the house is important to note, is only 900 ft, if it's even that. So you're in a tiny area, lot of furniture. And the suspect in this case, Landon Watson, screams and comes right at the Daytona Beach Sergeant and gets probably within a millimeter of him or he may have even struck him with the dagger. This isn't a butter knife. We're going to show you a photo. It's a dagger. And with that, everybody opens fire and strikes him. Um, it's important to note that Landon was arrested on 620 of 25 for lawyering and prowling. And at his arrest, when they asked you different mental health questions, he just he said that he wanted to die. So clearly the sad part is there's a mental health issue here. Uh, you have two victims who were stabbed and again when we show you this was a dagger. had that got into the sergeant's neck or the sergeant's head or the sergeant's face or his juggler vein, we we'd be having a completely completely different story. And as we sat back, and I'm not speaking for the chief, the chief's going to speak his own words. I watched the videos over and over and over again, I am extremely proud and support, 101% what those officers did. They didn't go to work that night to kill anybody, and they certainly didn't go to work that night to be killed. It's a sad situation. uh you know now we have to deal with the mental health of the officers that are involved and again I do want to extend uh my sympathies to the family you know they did lose an 18-year-old so chief thank you sheriff so just to echo that I too want to extend my sincere condolences to the family of the victim like the sheriff has already stated this is not something that we responded to uh with hopes of having to take a life uh but the sheriff's already pretty much uh explained For the most part, our involvement was a mutual aid request. So once we received that call, uh it was a very dynamic and violent situation. I had approximately seven officers respond prior to shots being fired and then an additional three or four after the shots were fired. So my initial officers were assigned to some of them were assigned to the outer perimeter around the residence and I had approximately three of them that were on that entry team. So, as we're watching this video, I'm watching them do everything in their everything possible to try to locate a suspect and help any additional victims that may have been inside of that residence because that was originally why they made entry because the information we had was that there were possibly additional victims inside of that residence. So, I also support the decision to go ahead and make entry in there. And then once you see that video and you see how close the suspect came to stabbing the officer, this could have been a completely different conversation. I could have been unfortunately having, you know, a conversation about an officer killed in the line of duty. So again, it's unfortunate that, you know, we had to take a life, but you know, all of the officers are physically okay, but we're following the standard protocol of placing them out on administrative leave uh while FDLE and the sheriff's office runs point on the follow-up investigation. And the Daytona Beach Police Department will fully cooperate uh with anything that is asked of us from the sheriff's office and FDLE. So, we're committed to full transparency as far as the follow-up investigation. And I just want to again commend, you know, the sheriff's office, Orman, Holly Hill, everybody that responded to that scene because that is the great thing about serving in law enforcement in our area is when that alert tone goes off, the uniform patch, the uniform, the patch doesn't matter. any and all available units are going to respond and do our best to, you know, restore safety to our community. So, before we play this real quick, somebody had asked me this morning, we since Mar since April of 2023, we have been to that residence 21 times in that in that time period. And some of the calls, we'll give you some of the call histories. Uh the re the two most recent calls were uh on 129 of 25 we assisted probation and parole in a home search. On 71 of 2025 a disturbance in gunshots was reported. Uh however when deputies got there uh there were no gunshots and then there was no disturbance was noted and then obviously on 75 we have the incident that occurs. Andrew, I'll let you hit the the button. This is your emergency room. That's when the beach. Okay. 1403 derby. Emergency. He's stabbing. I got stabbed and I ran. Okay. They run the doorbell and I open the door and I see driveway full of blood and a bloody man sitting out there. Yeah. The person that sus the suspect is probably across the street. That's where he lives. He lives over there at 1402 Dash Road. He got stabbed over there. Yeah. This guy here sitting at the door dying. Hold on. Let me just check on Who stuck you, man? Talk to me, bro. Is the guy right here on the bike with the dogs? That's who stuck in That's not a suspect. Probably or it is. Probably. Probably ain't [ __ ] good enough. Where's he at, dude? He was in the house over there. Yes. Okay. Way for any agency right now to contain that house. Hey, that house that y'all are holding right there, that's where he said he last saw him at. He was in the house when he saw him. 7 Delta 10 central. I'm going to answer that call. Okay. 71 central. Well, I was told he was in the house, but we don't know for certain. What was your last win? White shirt. Doesn't know about any shorts. White shirt is the only thing he could tell me. And the last time he was seen was in the house. 71 in the house with blood on a shirt. Okay. So, it's confirmed he is in the house. Correct. Send four. All right. When RK9 gets there, I want to start making announcements to that house. Le police department. Come on now with your hands up. You got enough for receiving team. We need additional body. We have enough for receiving team. The house is now with your hands up. To come out with your hands up. Do it now. It's possibly in here. Possible. Hey, we're going to go in slow. Do we have another shield? Cuz we're going to have to break left and right. No, just hold left. Stand back. Yeah. Less lethal. Put you in the back. Hold right. Yep. Hold right. Ready, Chris. Moving. with your hands. Looking for victims and other suspects. Yep. Hold that. Once you get enough, push it with you. Your blood trail goes left right to that door. You got blood on this door. Hands up. One more in the room. [Music] One person talk at a time. One person talking at a time. There's more in Hey, stop [ __ ] moving. Stop moving. I think he's [ __ ] You're good. You're good. There's more people in that room. I understand. He's He's doing his last thing. He's dead. I have him covered. Chris, if you want to watch that, somebody need to watch that door. I got the door. I got door. One person talk at a time, guys. Okay. Hey, we're good. We got one subject down. Can someone the the two victims were sleeping when he attacked them? The 39year-old and the 16-year-old. Uh so, anybody got any questions? Right now, I think you heard the chief say it. FDLE is in charge of the investigation with the state attorney's office. Um, you like any any police discharge, they look at uh we look at me and the chief look at policy issues and training issues and the state attorney's office will look at criminal issues and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement looks at that same exact thing. Standard operating procedure. Uh, all the officers and deputies involved are on administrative leave uh till we decide the time is right to return him to duty. You said since 2023 they were called 21 times. We've been there 21 times at that home. Only one call involved him and that was the night of that incident. So all three of them lived in that that home to the best as we could tell. Yes. People in there know when you see how quick the encounter was and how split second of the situation, what comes to mind for you? It comes to mind, thank god the sergeant wasn't stabbed. You know, it's one of the things I said in the beginning. You're going into 892 square ft with furniture all over the place. There's not a lot of room to maneuver. So to all the armchair quarterbacks out there, oh, you should have shot him with this, you should have shot him with that. You saw how quick that was. And and I'm telling you, we we can't tell you with 100% certainty that the sergeant wasn't stabbed, but there's a good chance he was and his vest may have stopped it. We don't know. We don't know that 100%. But that's how close he is when he comes out with that dagger. And again, he's not holding a a knife. You got one thing to do and your reaction is going to be do what you were trained to do and you're going to use deadly force, you know, and and there was there was really no other option that confined area and you know, you can sec second guess what you all you want. You know, do you not go in and there's other victims there and they bleed to death and then you get, well, why wouldn't you go in, you know, and think to something, an active killer doesn't necessarily have to have a gun, you know? An active killer can have a knife and could be killing people while you're standing outside, you know, debating on what you do. So, like I said, tactically they did and and Chief said this, it didn't matter what their patch were. You saw how they formed up, announcements were made and they went in and when he came through that door, there wasn't a hell of a whole lot anybody was going to be able to do to stop that threat. Good question, Chris. Chief, you want to close it? So, just in closing, um, when you look at the video, I think I could speak for the sheriff. It goes back to training. I think both agencies, the sheriff's office and Daytona Beach PD, our training mirrors each other as it pertains to use of force and it centers around the sanctity of human life. So even prior to watching the video, you can never be 100% sure, but even prior to watching the video, I felt pretty comfortable based on the training that if they had to shoot someone, it was absolutely necessary and they had no choice.
