a jury has found an akran woman guilty of stabbing her mother to death more than three years ago investigators say cydney Powell and her mother Brenda got into an argument in March of 2020 it turned deadly when Sydney stabbed her mother several times Sydney was 19 at the time of the crime she pleaded Not Guilty by reason of insanity the jury found her guilty on all charges including murder she'll be sentenced next month this video contains the interview of man whose daughter murdered her mother when his daughter cydney Powell returned home from college unexpectedly Steven Powell sensed something was wrong when he confronted her Sydney was evasive determined to get to the root of the problem Howell contacted the school and discovered that Sydney had been expelled both he and his wife Brenda were concerned but they agreed to do whatever was needed to help their daughter Brenda went home early to talk to Sydney so they could decide what their course of action should be after texting with her husband she stopped answering a short time later Powell was told that the police had been called to his home and that his wife was in the hospital Brenda Powell had been struck in the head with a cast iron skillet and stabbed in the neck over 30 times do you have any nope I mean he can go home with with and Dave said he go there but that that just outed I open that ready yeah I uh but I mean he was supposed to stay the key is to make sure he stays there until I can figure out what the hell I'm going to do I don't know I mean get to do something tonight she's not we're not going back home I don't know when am I going to be able to get back home back home yeah like getting to the I mean today oh okay yeah they'll do what they got to do it's yeah I mean you you'll be able to go back home that's what I mean what I want to is the question that's what I get well but I can get in there once once once they're doing they got like I said they have things they have to to do out there the crime scene will have to be processed including a cleaning crew before Powell returns to the house facing the scene of the tragedy so soon may not be the best choice the pieces the puzzle together figure out what's going on Etc and then once they're done doing what they're doing it takes a long time whether it's for you or whether it's for me or whether it's for anybody else it takes a long time and once they're done doing everything and they'll open it up so at that point you know right now it's just you know limited to who who they allow to come and go and then once they clear that up which be sometime today that's me there somebody down the the hospital then with Brenda they'll interview Brenda they'll interview Sydney because they were talking to say Sydney was just laying there just it was clear shock you saw those cars that out there so the protocol is and I can't tell you this happened because I wasn't there and I'm sure what happened is when they left with Brenda in Sydney Somebody went with them or follow them to the hospital separate trans that's usually what happens that's the protocol what happens people remove themselves from the scene like I said or file F down to the hospital answer your question somebody be down you said bren's mom and dad br's mom and stepdad are going hello I'm at the police station I don't nope my yeah why is that they said they're not at akan City the's mom said they haven't processed her yet where would she be went to City yeah I heard City they were going to Dave came back and said they're going to city maybe the information isn't input yet or something I don't know but it's been a long time my mom should be there too and so should my brother yeah I just talk yeah all right I don't know yet I don't know yet he was supposed to stay for a cross practice supposed to stay from from 3: to 5:30 yeah but he he he will be okay and then we'll go from there all right how about they haven't gotten there yet that doesn't seem got there they processed sorry does that make sense in a trauma I'm assuming what would be there is a note of hostility and combativeness in Powell's voice this is hardly surprising given his shock and grief he needs an outlet for his frustrations and the detectives have been trained to handle such a reaction well they they would take them in and startor okay yeah I mean that makes [Music] said uh female in distress I said well that's funny because Brenda's there my wife so I said well let me call so I call Brenda and it rings and rings on the cell phone no answer I call Sydney back rings rings and Rings no answer I call Rend back ring ring ring no answer I'm pacing around I call Jeep back and as I'm on the phone with him telling him there's no answer my doctor calls me back he said oh Mom's on the phone with the with uh M Union and so what cops her on the way and she went there's going to break in and there's she just started going off she said she was there's been somebody broke into the house there's blood everywhere and I'm like stop and then I started that's when I called I I mean I'm sure there was conversations after that but I'm not going to remember the detail she was hysterical a crying I called je back and said yes I don't know what I told you I don't know if I said it was legit or G that cops on the way there's been a Breakin C and I and I left drove home and saw about so at first you talked to her she said which your wife was on a phone with M yes as soon as I said cops are on the way the hysteric started the university his daughter mentioned was the one she had been attending before the school forced her to leave due to her failing grades is she still attending well as far as we knew up until today yes but apparently not for the last I don't know maybe couple weeks according to Sydney's best friend Sydney had lied to her friends and classmates until being forced to tell the truth about her expulsion Sydney told her friends that her the weekends a little just odd little frequently not not never seemed odd for sorts you know I mean acted perfectly normal but she came back and I'm like questioning why aren't you at school why you coming home and you know it's all the same just you know the vague non answers and so she turned off her her like Life 360 app but I think on that app you can't see where she's going you can kind of see highlights of where the phone was well you know I'm kind of looking like going well you're not where you're supposed to be this is kind of weird so I called her on it and I said you know M because I went on so then I tried to go on the M Union website and I say I figured a I just see if there's anything on that I parents only have so much you know I'm willing to pay the bill and everything but if you want to find anything about it you're out of luck right but I figured I'm going to try so I sign on it says your passwords password or log password ID doesn't work like that's weird so I recover my password and I put in the right answer and it didn't work and I did that a few times and just I texted her back and said something's not working what's wrong she comes up with something that says the website's down basically and and you know but I'm working on it so few days passed later nothing seems out of the ordinary until I maybe it was today I tried to get back on oh Mount Union calls me today because I sent them an email that says my user ID is this my P my ID is this my password is not working my recovery answer won't work and I know where I was born I know my car and it doesn't when you type in your your uh uh recovery email it it the system just it kind of it didn't recognize it so I sent Mount Union Billy an email and says basically what's wrong so she calls me back today and says well the reason you can't get on long story your daughter's unenrolled so I went what what's going on so I text Sydney like oh give me a call I have a question to ask you I call her no answer I say give me a call a question to ask I have a question to ask you and I look on that that little that little light 360 app and her car was at home like wow that's kind of weird so I leave my phone at home so she can't track me and I go home and there she is she's at home perfectly normal she's crying because I L I said what's going on are you now SCH she was I'm overwhelmed in school and I don't really like what I'm doing and it seems like it's a waste of my time and your money I said well but that's all part of it nobody's going to tell you you need to do what you're doing when you're 20 you need to figure it out but you have to work through the problem you can't just ignore the problem and have it go away I'm sorry when did you have that conversation today like 1130 I don't remember yeah it was it was I left work I left work because it was before lunch it was maybe around 11: because I was probably there from 11: to 11:30 so from her phone call so that I mean that's what I said you know my recommendation is call the school back call the Student Union get reinstated and then if you have to take the summer off take the summer off figure out what you want you're supposed to take summer class because she changed a couple majors and that's what she goes all my friends have their together and I don't I said well I'm 54 and I'm have my together you don't don't look at it that way you need to you need to work the problem you can't just have the problem sitting there and they hey ignoring it is not going to do you any good how's story doesn't give his daughter a very strong motive they understood that she was overwhelmed and were willing to help her work her way through the problem so I went back I called my wife and told my daughter's phone she picks up she was working down at Children's and she goes what's wrong and I basically told her I said you know I mean Sydney I think the reason we can't get H because she's unenrolled she hasn't been going to school she goes well then we talked to Jill her boss and says I'll see if I come home so I left on the way home I get I either on my way back to work or when I'm at work I call Brendon and she's like well I'm just pulling in now so I let it go and then I get a text from Brendon says she says something to the effect of she was on the phone waiting for someone from student Affairs to call me back and that was at 12:36 says how much was the check that they're returning CU Mount Union told me too before in the phone conversation we're returning your check like you don't want nobody to return a check so I said I texted her back at 12:36 and I said I had no idea it was electronic I said check on the scholarship too make sure she didn't lose that at 12:37 at 12:39 I got on the bank account and I said I said maybe I go $ 5,435 and then at 1241 what did you discuss with her and that was it so 1241 was last 12:41 was the last and I don't know how to tell what time I got his call Rec 1254 1254 seems like it because then I called I called I maybe it was a little before that maybe it was 1251 that sounds maybe right what is you so at 12:49 I called and I think it went right I don't know if it connected not 12:51 I call from Jeep and I 1252 I called Brenda 1253 I called s syy 1253 I called Brenda 1254 I called Jeep and said there's no answer you so I I don't know so I called Jeep and said there's no answer then while I'm on the phone with Jeep Sydney calls back and that was that conversation hi yeah Crystal how are okay so then that was it then after that then I just I I left once I talked to Sydney and I high tailed at home how are you doing do anything for you right now no no no go where I need to be yes that's fine that's now was she how long has she been acting fun with your da just been a couple weeks I mean yeah maybe I mean I don't remember when she when she came home that first time kind of out of the blue but that was she said she was stressed out she told me that today she told me that today she was overwhelmed is she having any medication no no has she ever tried Sydney was not on any type of medication but she had suffered from various levels of anxiety for years marijuana I don't know I I didn't think she drank until the first time she drank and she realized it was last year it was her freshman year and I'm sure she does I'm not gonna be you know I'm not gonna say she doesn't but I don't think it was ever a problem but I don't not an expert in that field has she ever had any psycholog problem no always been you know shy and you know reserved and that's what always the problem is you know she never says anything you know so well Brenda said she didn't realize she was having her period until tampons are missing she's my language so that's just the kind of person that she was it was all you know internalized and that's why I told her now I said well you know nobody can help you if you don't tell what the problem is she say anything else about the break in or anything like that just no just hysteric said there was a Breakin and there's blood everywhere and where's your mother and she's just nothing what is your daughter I don't this does I don't know I'm barely I know mine sure I know how to do this what call correct you know were you able to go in the house at all I made it in far enough to see the back fit there's when you go into the front door you come around the kitchen you go in you can see the U there's like a pass through between the kitchen and the family room the back of the house I could see the right hand there's two big sliding windows I could see that window was clearly it looked like it was busted and the uh the blinds were they looked like they were pushed in went down the hallway probably about 2 feet just enough to see blood all the way down the hallway and then somebody told me I gotta go as I was yelling there was no response R now the back door sliding door do you guys use that at all no there's a couch in front of it we do in the summer when the couch moved the love seats usually moved from the uh the sliding doors here the couches you moved over into like this area we can go back up that back door for the uh like the patio and stuff and that's locked uhhuh do you have like like a safety there's a lock and there's a the lock on the bottom of it too okay and the sliding glass one there's no there there's a lot but I don't sure the button wasn't on the window or the window sliding Windows is what was busted open right okay yeah there's the sliding door that we don't we haven't used it since last probably fall once we got our Christmas tree and Thanksgiving we moved the couch out the way put the tree in [Music] that well really bad news your wife what happened we're not sure it looks like I don't think someone broke into the house I don't know if your wife and daughter got into an argument that physical I mean the window was broken but there's no forced entry into the house the window's broken but nobody actually came through that window the sliding door was a lot so did your wife and daughter ever have like really heated no arguments no no my son's here yes we got from school because a situation the way social media is people we didn't want him to be at school by himself would you like one of us to just go be with your son I don't know don't know take your time there's no R how is too stunned to make a decision it is almost impossible for him to process not only that his wife is dead but that his his daughter may have murdered her are there any other family [Music] members her mom's at the hospital they didn't tell they're not going to tell her anything who's that my mom yeah tell them my mom I didn't even know she was at the hospital I know she went but I wasn't sure [Music] where brown brown for is there anyone who look your child he here he's here I mean do you want him to stay with you I don't know don't know what to do do that's why we're here all where to go nothing to do can't go home before he could go home there's investigation that has to happen hours [Music] hours we have invations can I go to the hospital city am I allowed to go try to know who do you want to go see your wife yeah prob not going to let you see her I don't know what do protocol is at the hospital I can always call and see I see my mom is there or my her mom yeah I mean you go wherever you want to we don't have you if you're not at custy you can go where you want which I probably would not go to see your daughter what's going on there well she she got some few mind cuts on stff she got she might be a city they took one to AC generality where oh well that's yeah my my there at at city I thought Bren was going to city she could has no idea where to begin or what if anything he will need to do for his daughter clearly they think Sydney did this i l two she's going ja forever wife's dead I know they're going to do everything they can to make sure that they find out exactly what happened nothing's definite as of yet they still have to do their investigating did he go check to see he check and see the hospital sure where's does not realize that his sister may be responsible they don't know they haven't told me they're investigating so yes your mom I think is in active City inter me that's me yeah yeah right now I want I don't know I don't know what to tell you I want to huh probably shouldn't go to City why because they're going to be taken care of Sydney and I don't know if you're going to have access to it right now so Bren is at aan General yes is that there was strong evidence to support that Powell suffered from temporary insanity but ultimately it was decided that she was in her right mind at the time she
