WE HAVE TO GO. WHAT'S YOUR order up? >> DON'T COME UP HERE, MAN. >> INSIDE, the situation is divided. Jose is directly controlling Leslie and Janelle, while Janelle is trying to protect her mother. In another part of the house, Breanna, the one who made the 911 call, is hiding with her brother Jesus. But officers don't know this yet. As far as they're aware, they are dealing with fewer people than they actually are. At this point, a negotiator is called in to try and establish communication and bring the situation under control. Quick side note, I've been building something on the side that I'm really excited about. It's a documentary channel called Black Archive. The first episode is already up. The link's below. Now, let's get back to the case. >> This is Officer Whipple of the Greeley Police. >> What do you want? >> Well, >> I got two people in here. I'm here already. >> I I know. I just want you to come out safe. That's what I want. >> Well, man, you know I'm not going out. >> Why is that? >> I'm not. Hey, listen, man. If I hear this front door even coming to open to the go crazy, telling you. >> Well, we don't want anything to go crazy. So, what what got you here today, man? >> My wife, man. >> While one team focuses on communicating with Jose, another team begins clearing the house. And they are about to discover that there are more hostages than initially believed. >> Jose, you have a lot to live for, man. I think about your daughter. >> Windows, man. That's what I was thinking is. >> I don't want you to go anywhere. >> First week, I was seeing if you could tell if any of them were cracked or not. There's one right here. >> Is it cracked? >> No, somebody's waving at us. >> Open your window. >> Open. Let's get a ladder. Okay. We're going to need a ladder to uh rescue some kids off of this west side as soon as we can get it. We need to go up about 20 ft. Ask him if he can talk to him about getting the screen out. Hey, hey kids. Can Can you push the screen out? >> The children are clearly terrified. If Jose is watching them closely, any sudden move could make things worse, which is why officers have to be extremely careful. >> is is is your door shut? >> I'm not coming >> Okay. Is there just two of you? >> Jose. >> You two and the dog. >> everybody including myself. >> Yeah, we can get these kids out. We've got the window open. >> Jose, can I help you make this go smoothly, make this go okay? >> What side of the house you on? West side of the house? >> Yeah, west side of the house. You may have to come through the garage. You got to have a ladder. We got a ladder? >> While officers outside quietly prepare a ladder trying to create an escape route, the team inside is dealing with an increasingly intense situation trying to keep Jose engaged. >> We're not coming up here. >> You got a flash? >> Hey, I'm going to give up. >> Give up. SHOW US YOUR HANDS, BUDDY. >> SHOW US YOUR HANDS. STACK UP. >> STACK UP. >> STACK UP. STACK UP. >> STACK UP. >> STACK UP. >> HEY, SHOW US YOUR HANDS. >> GO BACK. >> PLEASE STACK UP. PLEASE. >> STACK UP. STACK UP. >> PLEASE. >> HER AND I THINK THERE MAY [laughter] BE ONE more up there. >> STACK UP. STACK UP. >> WE'RE NOT COMING UP. >> WE'RE NOT COMING UP. >> NO. >> ARE YOU TWO PEOPLE UP THERE? >> COME UP HERE. >> WE'RE NOT COMING UP. >> COME UP HERE. DON'T COME UP HERE. WE'RE NOT COMING UP. THEY'RE NOT THEY'RE NOT COMING UP. >> WE'RE NOT COMING UP THERE, MAN. WE DON'T WANT ANYTHING to happen to anybody. >> GET OUT. GET OUT, YOU GUYS. >> STOP. THEY'RE NOT >> WE'RE NOT COMING UP. >> WHAT'S THAT? I'M GOOD. >> GO. >> STOP. >> GO. TELL THEM >> OKAY. >> You guys tell them to stop the radio traffic. >> If you guys even try IT, I'M GOING TO [ __ ] KILL ONE OF THOSE LITTLE SHITS. I'M GOING TO [ __ ] >> We're not coming up there, man. We just We want everyone to be okay. >> Jose does not appear to be thinking clearly. His behavior suggests he's operating in a completely different state of mind. >> Please stay right there. >> We're not moving. We're not coming up. >> STAY UP DOWN THERE. [ __ ] DON'T TRY IT, MAN. >> Got a shield. You got someone in the middle or something? Got in the middle? >> We don't Hey, we don't want anything bad to happen, guys. >> Okay. >> I don't want anything bad to happen. >> Well, back up. >> I'm not going to back up. I need to make sure that everyone's okay. >> Everybody's okay. >> Can you Can you work with me a little bit, man? Can you just show me your hands? Can you talk to me about what's bugging you today? >> Yeah. >> For the first time, communication with Jose improves slightly. And while that's happening, officers outside are moving forward with a plan to get the kids out. >> Oh. >> Help me. >> Right up there. >> Dan, tell him what we're doing. >> Okay. Got it? >> Yep. >> I'm going in. >> You're going. >> Go ahead. >> Danny, you going in? >> Let me in. >> Just try to get him down. >> Okay. You guys start getting ready to go. Okay? Shh. Okay, we're going to go with this officer down. You want to come up? You got to go. You got to go. >> Green van just arrived in front of the target location. One guy take all traffic to TAC 5. >> Okay, be careful. I got you, okay? I got you. >> The kids are successfully brought out, and that changes everything. The situation isn't over, but it's no longer as critical as it was moments ago. >> Okay. Okay. That's a [ __ ] up place to be in, man. No judgement. >> Don't try it, man. >> I'm not trying anything. I'm just trying to talk to you, that's all. >> What the [ __ ] are you trying? >> I'm not trying. No one's trying anything, dude. We want everyone to be okay. >> I see you guys. Can you let me step up here? >> We're not taking any steps up, man. What's What's your name? What? >> Jose. >> Jose? >> Yes. >> My name's Seth. >> What's up, man? >> Not too much, dude. >> Since Jose isn't allowing officers to come inside, they're forced to look for other ways to gain access without escalating the situation. >> You coming up? Hey, do you want to use this as a staging point? >> Yes. >> Yeah, I agree. Oh, [ __ ] >> Who's she? Yeah, he knows we're going to come that way. They're saying there's another kid, Steve. There's a teenage girl and maybe another mom. >> Janelle and Leslie are still inside and that's the biggest concern right now. The situation is unpredictable. At any moment, Jose could panic. So, instead of rushing in, officers rely on the negotiator to keep things under control. >> I'm not going to hurt my kids and my wife, nobody. >> You're not going to hurt your kids or your wife. >> No, no. Thank you. I appreciate you not hurting anybody. No, I'm not going to hurt nobody. >> All right. What about yourself? >> Yes. I'm definitely going >> Why? >> Because I don't got nothing to live for. >> Well, I think you do. You have those kids that you're not going to hurt. >> You're going to have to have to take me out of here in a body bag. >> We don't want to do that. >> No, no, look here. Tell them to get the [ __ ] away from that other side. No, the other dude that just walked across. >> Jose is clearly agitated. He's repeating the same things over and over, showing frustration and a lack of trust toward the officers. There's a pattern in his behavior. Agitation, repetition, and distrust. All of it points to a situation that could turn quickly. >> Come back over here, talk to us. >> I'm not playing any games. I just want to talk to you. >> Don't [ __ ] try it. >> We're not trying anything. We haven't moved. >> You got a [ __ ] shadow right there. I'm serious, don't [ __ ] try it. I ain't [ __ ] playing no games. >> Right now, the priority is clear. The two remaining hostages, Janelle and Leslie, their safety is everything. But instead of calming down, Jose begins making demands. Get your cigarette if you come talk to me. >> I said give me a cigarette first. >> All right, where they at? >> They're in my truck. >> Where What The only truck >> Don't come UP HERE. DON'T [ __ ] COME UP HERE. >> JOSE, I'm not. I'm trying to hear you. >> They're right there on the center console. >> Center console in the truck in the driveway? Is there a lighter in there cuz I don't have a lighter? >> Yeah. >> All right. Give me a minute. >> You bring me those and then I'll be cool. >> Okay, I'm getting them. Okay, he's going to get them right now. >> Cigarettes for him. He said they're in his truck. Says he'd be cool if he we get him his cigarettes. >> I don't know, if I have enough room. They'll both hit. But, we'll see what value it holds. >> Jose? >> Yeah. Throw them up here. Throw them. Throw them. Never mind. >> At this point, officers are hoping for a surrender. There's a possibility this could end peacefully. But, Jose keeps adding more demands, delaying any resolution. >> Right here, dude. I'm [ __ ] tired, man. I know you guys I know you guys ain't playing no [ __ ] games. >> We're not playing any games, man. We just want to make sure everybody's safe. >> We are. >> Okay. >> We are. I didn't do [ __ ] to them. >> Okay. There's two sides to every story. >> There's three, and then there's the truth. >> Okay. I agree. >> And the truth are the [ __ ] videos and recordings that I got. >> Okay. >> A [ __ ] year and a half of them. In my house, when I'm a [ __ ] sleep. And asking her to stop, begging her to stop. Let this change, man. >> At the center of all this is something deeply personal. Jose believes his wife is cheating on him. And that belief, whether true or not, is driving his actions. >> Don't try to pull your [ __ ] hero move, man. >> Dude, I'm not. I'm right down here. You know me. >> I don't [ __ ] know you. >> Oh, you do. I'm right here. >> Where is that other [ __ ] Do you see him? >> He's behind us. >> Don't get away from that other [ __ ] agent. On the other side. Hey, give me my phone. It's in the truck. >> He He a gun in his hand. >> He does? >> Yeah. >> This is so [ __ ] up. Where is that Where is your phone? >> He wants his phone in the truck. >> I'm not going to use your [ __ ] You're not doing anything. I just want to [ __ ] I don't want anything. >> Phone in the console. >> Where is your phone at in the truck, dude? >> Look at the truck. >> He says look for it. >> I'm going to set your phone on the stairs. Do you want your >> You're going to [ __ ] throw it up here. >> It won't break, dude. >> Throw it. I don't give a [ __ ] >> All right, I'm going to throw it down. >> Back back. Okay? Put your [ __ ] gun I don't have it. I want you right there with the gun. >> I don't have it. >> This [ __ ] right here. >> Look, it's nothing. I put it away. >> a gun on you. [ __ ] it. Get the [ __ ] away from me. >> Dude, I put it away. >> No, put that away. >> You can see my hand. >> No. I don't care. >> All right, I gave him his phone. >> With some of his demands addressed, the negotiator makes one final push, trying to convince Jose to let his daughter go. >> We're trying to work with you. Okay? So, you come to the front door with your hands up. Keep the phone in your hand if you want to. Keep talking to me. Come outside with the phone in your hand, nothing else, okay? >> All right. Give me a minute. So, these guys are backed up in the stairway. Stay well. >> Can you come out the front door for me? >> Give me a minute. I just backed I just backed up, bad honey. Turn around. Just keep going your way. >> We don't want that, man. We don't want that at all. I know you're scared. But I also know you're brave and you're a man of your word. >> I know that I'm actually scared about >> You're scared of what the future holds. Don't be scared of what's going to happen outside this door. >> You want to go out? Are you going to come out? >> No, I'm just going to finish this up. >> Would you like that? >> Yeah, I'm okay with that. >> Janelle is finally released and makes it out safely, but Leslie is still inside and the situation is far from over. In fact, it has become even more serious now because Jose is left alone with his primary target. >> All right, hold on now. I got to pat you down real quick, okay? Put your arms out your side. Nothing in your pockets here? Okay. >> Well, I think my headphones, I don't know. Nope. >> Okay. Have a seat here, okay? So, where's your dad in there? >> Um, they're in the kitchen. Oh, my mom's name? Steve was calling her Teresa. I don't know why my dad said Teresa. >> Okay. And she's doing okay in there? >> Yeah, I gave her my phone. >> Your mom has your phone? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Yeah, it's her phone right now. >> Yeah, but it's she doesn't know my password though. >> And why is the subject calling her Teresa? >> I don't know. Um, I guess my I don't even know. >> And you have to be completely honest with us right now. You cannot mislead us in any way here. >> Even with progress, officers remain extremely cautious. Situations like this can change in seconds. >> is the same as yours, is to get Is this your mom that's inside? >> Yeah, that's my mom. Her name is >> her out safely. Okay. Is Is the man that's inside Is that your dad? >> Yeah. >> Biological? >> Yes. >> Okay. I I know you're in a tight pinch right now because you don't want something bad to happen to him legally, okay? But that The legal side of it is not important right now. Okay. The whole objective is to get your mom out safe so she does not get hurt. >> Yeah. >> Okay? So be honest to us to that extent. Did he ask you to say anything >> No. >> or to tell us anything or to present any information to us? >> He just told me to shut the door and like that. >> Okay. When you walked out, where were they at? >> They were in the kitchen. My mom was sitting at the dinner table and my dad was standing next to her with the gun still in his hand. >> He's standing next to her >> Mhm. >> in the kitchen. >> Yeah. >> Let's see. Did they have a kitchen table? Is she sitting at a chair there? >> sitting at a chair. >> Has he been pointing the gun at you guys? >> Well, before um before what's called you guys um came, um I was protecting my mom. Told them to shoot me, not my mom. >> [snorts] >> He just kept telling me to shut up, so. >> There's no other people in the house that we're unaware of? >> Mhm. Yeah. >> Okay. So just your mom and dad are the only two left in there? Okay. Has your dad done anything with furniture or anything in the house? Is he moving stuff around? >> Mhm. Well, he told me to put a chair next to like the stairs so I could see if um the guys were going to come up the stairs. >> Okay. And did you do that? >> Yeah, I did. There's a chair next to like the stairs going down. >> How big is the chair? >> Um, it's wide. It's pretty big, actually. >> It's It's like a big >> Yeah, we have a big tall table, so. >> Like a sofa type of chair? >> Like a din- dinner chair. >> Like a dinner chair? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Janelle is made to sit inside a patrol car to keep her safe and warm. Meanwhile, officers shift their full attention to getting Leslie out. >> Don't go outside or >> me outside. >> If you go outside, I'm going to kill myself. with my head. >> They're calling me >> I swear to god I will. Don't go outside. >> Listen to me. Follow her outside. >> If she goes outside, I'm going to kill myself. >> Follow her outside. Follow her. >> Come here. >> Push. >> Hey, no. >> Follow her outside. >> Please. She went outside. She went outside. >> In a brief moment of opportunity, Leslie manages to escape. And just like that, the final hostage is out. >> With that in mind, there's a full collection of true crime inspired merch available now at strangerlabel.com. Now, let's get back to the case. >> Okay. Okay. Can you stop? Are you all right? >> Yeah. He just said he was going to kill himself. >> I know. I understand. >> But he's on drugs. He's on meth. And he was smoking while we were in there. >> Smoking meth? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> So, but he's wanted me to stay in there and I had to leave. >> I know. That's fine. Why don't you take her down there? >> Okay. >> I think this is my brother-in-law right here. My I don't know where they are right now. >> Okay. Walk her down to the command post and if they want what's what they want. Were you trying to get him to come out with you? >> Yes, he wouldn't. >> What what what was he saying? Was he saying he just wasn't coming or >> He wants to kill himself. >> Okay. >> And I tried to get as close as the door as I could and I finally just took off. >> Yeah. All right. I was told to bring her down here to you guys. You okay? Just sit sit here. >> Just scared and I'm shaking up. >> Just stay here. >> We were worried about you. >> Oh, I was scared for myself, for my life. >> Was he Did he still have the gun in the top of the stairs? >> Yeah, he had it with him. He didn't even set it down the whole time. He had it in his hand. >> After giving her a moment to breathe, officers begin to ask Leslie what happened inside. Because at this point, her version is critical to understanding everything. >> Okay. >> This is Joel. He does the same thing. You okay? >> Okay. >> Our our goal is this, I just want to talk to you about what's going on inside. I want to get you over to your kids, okay? >> Okay. >> They are safe. They're with their aunt and their grandmother and everyone else. >> Okay. >> So, I just want you to know that, okay? >> Okay. >> I know you You through some traumatic stuff, all right? Do you need a moment to gather yourself, or are you okay to talk to me? >> I'm okay for right now, yeah. >> appreciate that. All right, so our goal right now is just to figure out some minimal things, all right? Number one, we're for sure there's nobody else in the house except for him right now, all >> it. >> That's it? >> Did you guys get the dog out? >> We're working on that. I I don't have an exact answer, but I'm not sure. >> Okay. >> All right. Number two, have you seen any other firearms on him? >> That's the only one I've seen him show. Yeah. >> Okay. Do you know if it was like a It was a pistol, right? >> I think it's a pistol. It's yeah. >> Is it Does it have a cylinder on it, or is it >> It has I don't know. It kind of looks like a toy gun that you would buy like a like I don't know. I really don't know my guns or anything like that, but >> I understand that. But you haven't seen any other weapons. >> No. That's the only one I've seen. >> Since since he was at the house with you, I know that that when he came in, there was an argument and so on and so forth. Can you walk me through what happened, please? >> He just came to the house, and cuz he's he actually had a court date. We were going to planning on going to his court meeting, the kids. >> Okay. >> And he came to the house. It was about 2:30, and we heard the garage door open, and we're like we were freaked out. And um it was me and my daughter right there at the table, and my other daughter had just came downstairs, and my boy was upstairs playing. And she's like, "Dad." And I'm like, "Call the cops." So she ran up there to call the cops, my oldest girl. And me and my younger girl were down there. >> Mhm. >> And so that we he just we were just talking about he thinks I'm cheating on him and all this stuff, but basically everything is just because he says he's got an audio and stuff, but he's just on drugs, and that's what he's hearing and seeing things. >> Did you see Did he take any more drugs while you guys were in the house? >> Um he he was smoking a a little bit of uh the meth when um we were in the house. >> Okay. He was smoking meth? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And now comes the moment they've been trying to avoid this entire time. >> But I'm pretty sure he was on it before, cuz I can tell. I can see it in his eyes, Yeah. >> Can I ask you this? When he came in, did did did he hit you at all? >> No. >> No? >> No. No hitting, no nothing. >> Did he point the gun at you? >> Um well, he had it kind of just walking around back and forth. So, I don't know if that was exactly pointing it to me, but he was just walking back and forth with it. >> Okay, did you feel like he was going to hurt you with it? >> I did. >> Okay. >> I did, yeah. >> You felt in danger? All right, relax. We don't know what that was. Cuz there's a lot of deployments and flash bang stuff we use. We don't know what that was, [snorts] okay? I don't know what that is. >> All right, all right. >> All right. Let's take a minute. Come on [laughter] over here. Come on. >> This video ends at this point. Inside the house, Jose Ramiro Martinez does not make it out alive. With Jose gone, the investigation didn't have much left to pursue. The situation came to an end, but not without leaving behind a heavy weight. Thank you for watching.
