Let's start in February 8th into the night morning of February 9th, 1987. Opal Weel was a 82-year-old woman living over in the Lealman area by herself. Somebody broke into her home. They cut the telephone lines. They came in through the rear door. It looks like they probably armed themselves with a knife. They confronted her in her bedroom and ultimately there was some form of a physical altercation that cost her life. She was strangled and she was beat. During that fight, she was courageous enough to pull out a chunk of suspect hair and and those hairs were recognized even in 1987 before DNA. They were collected as potential evidence. They were looked at microscopically against a lot of other suspects over the years. And then in early 2003, we came up with a DNA profile, but it never matched anybody. Fast forward to 2021, we performed a genetic genealogy investigation on those hairs and ultimately identified one of three brothers as being the suspect and one brother early on really kind of stood out. One was deceased. One was already exonerated. His DNA was already in the system. And so ultimately we met with him up in Mississippi. He was living in Mississippi and had a a quick interview with him and he denied knowing her. Made several excuses for why he was not in that neighborhood at the time of the murder and for several years around the time of the murder and obviously we knew that not to be true with the hairs and ultimately we made an arrest on him and um he sat in our jail for a few years until we finally went to trial just a couple weeks ago. >> And what was the result? >> Luckily the jury saw that he was guilty. They took about an hour and a half to deliberate and find him guilty. Very thankful that the jury could see that case for what it was. And so yeah, we're very happy with the outcome.
