You called 911. You got into a car accident, but the car that hit you drove off. A 911 call taker answered. They're getting your location, finding out what happened. How many people are hurt? All the details... That's where I come in. I'm a public safety telecommunicator, aka a dispatcher. The connection between your call and law enforcement help that arrives. I'm right there reading all the notes of your call, sending deputies to your location and giving them updates as you give them to 911. I keep in contact with the deputies constantly, sending back up if needed. When help arrives, you hang up. But I'm not done. You gave a description of the car, so I put out a BOLO. Deputies located it, and when it flees again and crosses into a neighboring jurisdiction. I'm already on the line with that agency, giving them the BOLO. One deputy on your call hasn't checked in. I radio them. Nothing. I contact my supervisor to remote into their body worn camera to make sure they're okay. That's one call, yours. While I'm working it I'm managing several others at the same time, all in different stages. Every one of them has someone on the other end counting on me to get it right.
