Picture this. You're on your kayak or paddle board, the water is flat, conditions are perfect. By the time you turn around, the tide have shifted and the wind has picked up to 15 mph straight into your face. What felt effortless an hour ago is now impossible. Before you hit the water, check two things: tides and wind. Do it the night before and again right before you launch. Florida wind can be calm at sunrise and a completely different story by noon. Wear bright colors, have your required safety gear on board, and tell someone your float plan before you go. If things go sideways, stay with your vessel, blow five short blasts on your whistle, and call 911. Don't fight the current head-on. Angle toward the nearest shore, even if it's not where you launched from. Our waters are beautiful and you should enjoy them. Just make sure you get home safe.
