I would now like to invite Milwaukee police chief Jeffrey Norman to the stage to provide a welcoming address and a moment of silence. Good afternoon. You all know me by now. Thank you so much for that. As always, I'd like to start off by always recognizing the greatest and oldest police band in the nation, our Milwaukee Police Band, directed by our retired Lieutenant Karen Dupus. give thanks to the greater Milwaukee fire police pipes and drums. Appreciate them also in regards to the work they've done for [Applause] us. So, greetings to our families, of our fallen officers, to our brothers and sisters who wear the badge, to our city and government leaders, to our supportive community partners and residents. Thanks for coming out to show support and provide loving memory to those who have given their lives in service to our communities. We shall never forget. We shall never forget. We shall never forget. Those words were uttered on that fateful day, September 11th, or as we all know, 9/11. We had that sad day of domestic terrorism. We use those powerful words to remember the victims, but also as a reminder of those responsible for the incident. We shall never forget. Amongst those numerous victims were fallen heroes of public safety, men and women, police, fire and other emergency services. These brave individuals who ran towards danger and not courageous individuals who put their lives first or other lives first and their own lives second. This is why it's fitting to use those four powerful words today to remind ourselves of bravery shown by 100 individuals and for our families who also represent our fallen officers. We shall never forget the ultimate sacrifice that they have given on behalf of our communities. We shall never forget that they put community first and their own lives second. We shall never forget that their sacrifice represents the best of us in our profession. We should never forget Milwaukee police officers Joseph Glora and Leonard Wnookski, Len Police Officer Ronald Hing and Milwaukee County Sheriff Deputy Wallace Shilling. May God bless you all as you all rest in peace. We also should never forget their families, for your courage, for your sacrifice, for your dedication and your support. I want to thank you for being here, the support of this event and support of each other. In closing, like to thank each and everyone who was here wearing the badge. May we continue to remember the dedication and loyal service you all bring to our various communities. Our communities are safer because what you all do each and every day, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, even including the holidays. To the men and women of Milwauke police department, to our fellow men and women of the badge for our various police departments both far and wide, I appreciate you and I thank you for your service. To our community partners, especially those of you who are here in person, thank you for your support. Thank you for allowing us to protect and serve you. May God bless you all and please remain safe and healthy. We'll all now take the time to reflect and honor our fall officers by one minute of silence. Hey beautiful. Thank you chief. At this time I would like to call the stage general Josh calls. Thank you sir. Um thank you. Um thank you first of all uh to those who organized this event. Um, every year this event uh truly does serve as an honor to those who had recognized us. Um, thank you to all of those who were here today for showing your support for the fallen officers we are honoring, for their family members, and for those across the state to protect and serve their communities. Um, and most of all, I want to say thank you to the many law enforcement officers who are here today, uh, across Milwaukee County, um, and across our state for everything that we do in our communities. You know, I believe that public service is not just important to our communities, it's essential. And I think there's no clearer example of that than the work that law enforcement officers do here in Wisconsin. When you step back and think about the breadth of what we asked law enforcement officers to do and how many areas we have asked officers to step in and it's really remarkable officers if you talk to them tell stories of them themselves or of their colleagues intervening when somebody is going through a mental health crisis talking somebody down to help keep them safe from themselves or help keep them safe from others. Officers can tell stories about how they or their colleagues have saved lives when they respond to somebody who is going through an overdose. How they have administered Narcan to save lives and revive people so that they might seek treatment that can help them turn their lives around and address substance use disorder. Of course, we ask our officers to intervene when there is criminal activity that threatens the safety of our communities and to prevent harm to the safety throughout Wisconsin. And our officers, of course, are called on to do all sorts of other things to engage with the community, to execute search warrants, to make arrests, to testify in court, to brief prosecutors on cases, and call on officers to do an extraordinary amount and the difference they make is extraordinary. But at the same time, we ask an extraordinary amount of the officers who do that. And there is real sacrifice that goes into serving our communities. That might be days spent away from family, sporting events that are missed. It might mean that they're getting a call in the middle of the night and they need to respond immediately. There are all sorts of sacrifices that go into this work and that's why wellness has been such a priority for us at the Department of Justice and for agencies around the state. So, thank you to the officers who are here for the sacrifice you make and for the impact that you have in our communities. And today we are honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Officers whose lives were tragically cut short when they were serving their communities, when they were making a difference in the lives of others. To the family members of those officers who were here, thank you for being here. And I want you to know that you are in the thoughts of everybody who is here. We meet every year to honor those family members. We honor them not just because of the sacrifices they made, not just because of the tragic loss of life that we are honoring, but because of the lives they lived, because of the impact that they had on their communities. the impacts like those that all officers have as we have talked about but also the impacts that they continue to have and the legacies that they have left. Each of your family members work with colleagues and they have left an indelible imprint on the lives of those they worked with. They carry on their legacy in the service that they continue to perform. Each of your loved ones made a difference in the lives of members of their community. And those impacts continue to be felt by those who benefited from them. And your family members continue to serve as an inspiration for people around this state who understand the importance of the work that they did and who want to follow in their footsteps and make a difference in the lives of others. So, thank you all for being here and thank you for your service to everybody uh who is here and serves the public. Thank you. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Thank you, Attorney General. I would now like to welcome to the stage county executive David Good afternoon. First and foremost, I want to say thank you to Milwaukee Countyy's law enforcement leaders for bringing us together today at the War Memorial as we gather to honor and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice and service to our community. The job of law enforcement, as we all know, is not an easy one. It requires courage. It requires dedication. It requires a deep commitment to the safety and the well-being of our entire community. Every single day, law enforcement officers put themselves in harm's way to protect us from the dangers that threatened our neighborhoods, threatened our families. They do this with unwavering dedication and unwavering commitment to the principles of both justice and fairness. But sometimes, despite their best efforts, tragedy strikes. We lose officers in the line of duty, and we are reminded of the risks that they take every single day to keep us all safe. And that's why we're here today to make sure that we remember those brave individuals. We also remember their families, their friends, and their colleagues who have been left behind to carry on their legacy. And we remember the importance of law enforcement, the vital role that they play in our communities every single day, and of the need to support our entire public safety community. And you know what? We owe it to them. We owe it to these fallen heroes to honor them on not just today, but every day. And so, let's make sure that we encourage everyone in our community to take a moment. Take a moment to remember those who have given their lives to our community, giving their lives in service to public safety. Let us honor their memory. Let us pledge to continue to support and honor those continue to serve us today. I want to say thank you to not only our law enforcement officials, but thank you to the families who are here as well. You paid this sacrifice, but you also serve as well. And to that, I say thank you and God bless you. [Applause] Thank you, sir. I now like to welcome Mayor Katherine Johnson to the stage. Say a few words. Good afternoon all. Really a pleasure to join each and every single one of you here again this year as we remember remember the lives of those brave law enforcement officers who are no longer with us. And we stand here all together on this beautiful day to join community members and local law enforcement in solemn remembrance of the officers, the deputies, the agents who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice to protect each and every single one of us. And not even just those of us here in this room, but those of us outside of this room, in the city, in the region, across our greater community. You know, as mayor of the city of Milwaukee, I've got the privilege, and it really is a privilege to represent some of the finest, the absolute finest, the finest men and women in law enforcement uh in our community. These men and women who bravely stand between danger and safety each and every single day for constituents all across our entire community. Now, while my role as mayor may bring several rewards, it also brings moments of very deep sorrow. Each time that I get a phone call late in the night or text message early in the morning, each time some communication comes to me and there is an officer involved shooting or perhaps some other serious incident that happens, my first thought, my literal first thought, my first prayer goes to the officers. So, I want to make sure that those folks who have stood up, who have taken the oath to protect and serve our community are okay. Think about worry about we continue to recognize and honor each of those officers who have fallen because they were brave individuals who gave their lives while serving in the line of duty. Their names, their names are permanently imprinted into our monuments. But even more importantly than that, those names are eternally engraved in our hearts. So all of us here today, all of us, including myself, carry it forward their legacies with immense respect as well as lasting gratitude. Also want to pay tribute once again to the family members, some of whom I've had the chance to know over the years that have had a chance to serve as mayor co-workers as well as all of our fallen herbs. Your pain is not lost. You see it every day. Every time you go to dinner and that chair is empty, you feel that pain. We know it. It's not faded, but neither is our support. The loss you endure daily is immeasurable. But know this that all of our hearts, they remain with you each and every single day. Your courage, your sorrow, your endured strength, they're seen, they're honored, and they're held in the highest regard, not just by us gathered in this room, but indeed by our entire community. So, as we move forward in our work to improve public safety in Milwaukee, the well-being of our law enforcement officers remains a top concern, not just for me, but also for our dedicated chief of police that you heard from, Jeffrey Norman. So, I continue to pray that I'll never again have to make a visit, a phone call to console, a grieving family. Those are without question some of the hardest days some of the hardest days that I have serving as mayor. Just as we focus in on physical safety, we must also make sure that mental health is a priority. I want to thank our partner at Milwaukee County Executive Crowley for all the work that they do to make sure that mental health is at the forefront here in our community. We want to make sure that mental health is a priority for our officers who face daily stress, daily danger, and for families who carry the weight of those risks, who live with heartbreaking loss. Because an officer serving is one thing, but a family also serves alongside them, too. That's why you're here today. So, we're committed to ensuring support is available, that it's accessible and ongoing for those who serve, and also for those who love them. I remain unwavering in our e efforts to build a stronger and more importantly a safer Milwaukee. And I thank I really do the dedicated men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department and all of our partnering law enforcement agencies here today for your tireless service and your enduring commitment to safety here in our community. Thank you all so much. [Applause] Thank you, mayor. I'd like to invite the president of the Milwaukee County Law Enforcement Executives Association, who is also the chief of the White Fish Bay Police Department, Chief Patrick Whitaker, to the stage. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. On behalf of the Milwaukee County Law Enforcement Executives Association, it's both a privilege and a solemn duty to be a part of this memorial program. We are gathered to honor the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of the brave men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty protecting the citizens of Milwaukee County. We come together not only to remember their service, but to celebrate their unwavering commitment to the communities that they serve. Every day they put on their badge knowing the risk that this profession holds. Despite those risks, they serve with honor and integrity. While they pay the ultimate sacrifice and are no longer here in person, their legacies continue to inspire us, reminding us of the true meaning of heroism and the profound impact of their service. To the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen, we extend our deepest sympathy and gratitude. We acknowledge the unimaginable sacrifice that you have endured, and we honor the strength and resilience you have shown. Please know that you forever remain part of our law enforcement family. Your loved ones commitment to service will never be forgotten and their memory will live on in our hearts and the communities they serve so bravely. As we pay tribute to these heroes, let us also renew our commitment, our commitment to supporting those who continue to serve. May we honor our fallen heroes through our renewed dedication to justice, courage, and compassion so that their legacies continue to live on each one of us. Thank you. [Applause] Thank you, sir. I would now like to invite the president of Milwaukee Police Association, President Alex for remarks. Thank you all for being here. I want to thank the families um who I've gotten very close to the last uh couple months. Um, I want to thank everybody that wears a badge, um, that gets up every morning and puts on a badge and goes out there and does what they're supposed to do for our community. Thank you all for being here today as we honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. As a president of the Monte Police Association, I stand here not only as a representative of officers, but as a voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves, our fallen officers. Each of the names we honor today represents a life lived in service. A commitment to protect and serve our community even in the face of unimaginable danger. These officers gave everything. They ran towards what others run from. And in doing so, they left behind families, friends, and fellow officers who now carry the weight of the of their absence every single day. But let us not forget the sacrifice does not end with a badge. The families of these officers have also paid a heavy price. Spouses who sleep besides an empty pillow. Children who grow up with memories instead of moments and parents who bury their child they once held in their arms. Their grief is a quiet echoes of the loss. And their strength is our testament to the courage that lives that lives with our law enforcement family. Today we don't we don't just mourn. Today we remember. Today we honor. And we recommit ourselves to never letting their names fade from our hearts or their legacy from our mission. To the families here today, your loved ones are not forgotten. They are heroes yesterday, today, and always. Thank you. [Applause] At this time, we will prepare for the Memorial Week presentation. Each Memorial Week symbolizes the beauty of each fallen officer's life. The wreath also symbolizes eternal life and that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. The traditional layer of the morning wreath is done as a sign of respect and remembrance.
