Hi, I'm Mayor Tom Barrett here to remind all citizens of Milwaukee that all fireworks are illegal in the city of Milwaukee, even if they were purchased outside of the city limits. The use of these consumer fireworks can cause serious injuries as well as property damage to friends and neighbors. That is why any item that emits smoke, a bang, or sparkle is considered illegal and can result in a substantial fine, including fines for an adult who consents to the use of fireworks by a minor. Please enjoy the safe and legal displays and respect other people in the parks and neighborhoods. As we celebrate our nation's birthday and other events, celebrate the Safeway. Thank you for your cooperation from the city of Milwaukee. Each year in the United States, over 9,000 people are treated at hospital emergency rooms for injuries due to exposure to fireworks. Over 2,000 fires are caused by fireworks landing on homes. Numerous arrests and fines are imposed for possessing fireworks. In the city of Milwaukee, no person may sell, offer for sale, possess, or discharge any item that emits smoke, a bang, or sparkle. This includes any firecracker, bottle rocket, cherry bomb, colored smoke bomb, toy cap, blank cartridge, toy pistol, sparklers, display wheels, torpedoes, skyrockets, Roman candles, or aerial salutes. These items are considered illegal. Any adult who uses or consents to the use of fireworks by a minor upon conviction are subject to a fine of not less than $500 or more than $1,000. We as parents would not let children play with matches. But did you know that sparklers burn at a temperature of 2,000°, the same as a match? So, kids, if you find or see someone using fireworks, the same precautions apply as a gun or matches, stop, don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by letting the pros handle it. You will avoid personal injuries, house fires, arrest, and fines. Thank you for helping make our city safer. [Applause]
