I think he's >> I don't feel a fall. >> Anyone see anything? >> I was pulling up. He fell right in front of me. I pulled over and somebody was already on the >> So you someone hit him with a car? >> No, he said he was shot. But I asked where he was shot and he couldn't tell me where and just blood coming from his mouth and I cannot find a pulse. Lake one start rescue. We got a good GSW. >> He's aspirated. Blood out of his mouth. >> Sir. >> Sir. >> Grab his head. >> Yeah. >> Sir. >> Sir. >> Sir. >> Sir. >> Hey, everyone. I need everyone to go back to the car. >> Yeah. Sit in your cars. Sit in your cars for me. >> It's a little after 1:00 in the afternoon on March 2nd, 2025. [music] Route 120 runs straight through Lakemore, small town about an hour northwest of Chicago. Sunday traffic, gray sky, nothing unusual. Then a man staggers into the road. He's bleeding from five gunshot wounds and he's trying to reach the nearest car. A woman rolls down her window and he tells her who shot him. Then he goes down. Here's what you need to know before we [music] go any further. The person he named wasn't a stranger, wasn't a robber, wasn't someone who vanished into the night. That person was 100 ft away. standing calmly in his own driveway. And when police walked up to him, he told them he had no idea what they were talking about. One note before we start. This footage is real and some of it is hard to watch. So, we've blurred out what needs to be blurred. This is the murder of Ryan Pisanka. >> This is my car. >> This is your car? >> Yeah. >> Okay, I'll be with you. >> I gave I gave dispatch the license plate and the type of vehicle that took off from that garage. >> Yeah. You guys have videos. Awesome. If you guys can go to the banquet hall, I will definitely follow up with you. Okay. >> Thank you guys. >> He told me his dad shot him. His dad got in the car, pulled away, and drove that way. >> What did you see? >> I was just driving down. He fell. I pulled over and then all the blood started coming up. She was on the phone. Yeah. >> So, and this is you. Is that what you saw as well? >> Yes. All right. >> Okay. But the guy drove out with the That's the guy. He took a video and everything. I told him to take a video cuz I was on the phone with the police. >> Understood. I didn't see any shooting. I just heard the the shots. >> You Where were you? >> I was at this light right here turning going to turn left. I wasn't even going to turn left once I heard the shots. >> Okay. >> And then I saw him going like this on his phone. He started stumbling across. >> What way did the vehicle >> That vehicle went that way >> and it's a black The guy has a video of it. He >> He went that way, right? >> Yes. He went. >> So, who car is this? >> This is her. >> This is hers. You get all her information. Got I was coming this way and I saw him laying on the ground and full of blood and so and then he got up and then he staggered to my car and then he was hanging on my car and then he went down. >> Okay. >> And he said he was shot by his dad. >> Okay. So he was kneeling and kneeling in the street. He was laying laying he was laying in the street and then he got up not standing up but he sat up and then he stood up and there were a couple of us like holding him telling him to sit down but and then he was hanging on my car. >> Ryan was 31. For years he'd been chasing one thing, a pilot's license. He was close, too. Almost qualified to teach other people how to fly. Being up there gave him a feeling he went looking for everywhere else. A kind of freedom. His co-workers used to hear the motorcycle pull in. And a few seconds later, Ryan would come through the door with a joke already loaded. He had a dog named Sunny who went just about everywhere with him. And he shared a house on Rand Road with his father. Remember that last part. >> Sir, was it your dad? >> What's up? >> Your dad's the one? >> My dad's the one who >> who shot him? >> Shot him? Yeah, >> he's shot. No, I just I just came here just now cuz I saw that this was happening and the guy that guy was like leaning over the >> Do you live here? >> No, I don't. I live down the street but when we saw this >> Oh, you just saw it. Okay. >> Yeah, cuz he was standing up it looked like. >> Yeah. >> I thought he had a head shot. >> Yeah. >> Like more one from Kenny. >> Go ahead. >> Yeah, he's got >> come back on passenger van. Is that accurate? Where do you see the gun? >> Is it out of his head? Back of his head. >> Was he carrying this? Was he Was he carrying the helmet? >> That was over there. So, we believe that motorcycle is his. >> Was this his phone? >> Yeah, I got the camera. >> And we don't know whose this is. Hey P. >> Yeah. >> Where's she when you uh call Lake County? >> Yes. >> Go ahead. >> Huh? >> And then he stumbled out into the street into that lady's car and said, "Call the police. I've been shot." Lakemore one. Copy 28 on a motorcycle 100 ran road. >> Going up. Going up. >> Yes. Where are you guys going? Bipsy. >> Mckenry. >> Mckenry. >> Hey, officer. I was at the gas station and I heard what I thought like five shots and a guy come running by and there was a yellow Cadillac and he said, "We got to get out of here." I don't know if that had anything. >> Oh, no. That I know who that guy is. No, >> I just checking. >> Whose bike is it? >> My son, Ryan. >> Is that the one that is the one that was in the street? >> I don't know. I don't know. The shots came from inside that house. Ryan made it as far as the road before his body gave out. By the time officers arrived, the van a witness saw speeding off was already gone. On the pavement, they logged what he left behind. His motorcycle on its side, his helmet, his phone, and they had the plate number because someone who stopped to help had the presence of mind to hit record. >> I just saw it laying around. >> What's your son's name? >> I just told you Ryan. >> Ryan. >> Same last name. >> Yeah. Who lives here? >> Uh, Ryan. Me and my dog. >> Who is here in a black Toyota? >> Well, I have a black Toyota. >> No, not a black Toyota SUV. >> I have a a minivan. >> You do? >> Yeah. I was coming to get the dog chain cuz I forgot the dog chain. >> Where was it at? >> It looked like he left in a minivan, man. >> Yeah. I'm going to grab uh I was going to take the dog, but I forgot the the extender chain. >> All right. So, you were here. What's your son's name? >> I already told you guys five times. Ryan. Ryan. Yeah, that that's the license plate they said fled from the scene. >> I didn't flee. >> Oh, sir. >> I can't. Why would I be there? I live here. >> Your name's James, right? >> Yeah. >> All right, let's let's start over. You left the scene a little while ago, right? >> Yeah. >> You saw your son? >> What do you mean I saw him? >> Do me a favor. Don't be reaching around. >> My hands are falling down. I can't. >> You have any weapons on you? >> No, I don't. Search me if you want. >> It's okay if I search you. >> Sure. >> You might turn around. >> Let me try this real quick though cuz they keep falling. I keep losing weight from these pills. Is there anyone else in the minivan? >> Just my dog, which I need to get her. >> What kind of dog is it? >> It's a Labrador. It's a She's a real nice girl. >> All right. Can I have permission to search your van? >> Sure. >> All right. I appreciate it. >> My Let me grab my dog out there. >> Well, let me search you real quick. All right. Do a favor. Just turn around. Face the car for me. All right. Anything that stick me, poke me, hurt me in any way. think you told me I don't why and not >> Hey, I appreciate your cooperation right now. I >> I had a stroke. You got a >> No, I understand. >> All right. So, you left here a little while ago. >> I was going to take the dog, but I forgot the pulley chain. >> Okay. Where were you going to take the dog? >> By the lake over there. She likes to chase the dogs. Like look at the dogs and stuff. >> Yeah. Did you go over to the lake right now and realize you forget the chain? I forgot the extender chain. >> Oh, okay. So, you came back for it? >> Yeah, but I forgot to take my pills, too. I need to grab them. >> This is James Bizanka, 64. Ryan's father. He's got a small, tidy story. He wants the officers to accept. He'd taken the dog out to see the ducks at the lake, forgot a leash, and doubled back home. That's why his van matches the one that fled. That's the whole explanation. Keep an eye on that leash. >> All right. Did you get before Okay, sir. >> I need you to stay here with me for a second. All right. Did you get in any type of argument with your son before leaving? >> No. >> Any type of words or No. >> Did you say goodbye to him? >> No, I didn't know he was leaving. >> You didn't know he was here? >> I don't know what the hell is it what's going on. You're not explaining this. >> Well, I'm trying to ask some questions because we're being told one thing and you're kind of seeming like there's it's not another. You know >> what do you mean? Did you see your son before you left? >> Before I left? >> Yeah. Before you went to take the dog out? >> I was I just left. >> You just left. Was he in the garage getting ready to take a ride or did he get just get home? To be honest with you, I'm not sure. >> So, the officers ask him the obvious things. Did you and your son argue today? Any fight? Any weapons in the house? Listen to how he answers. >> I'm not I don't know. I just decided to leave. >> You just decided to leave? >> I didn't see that though. >> Was there any type of altercation before you left with your son? >> I need to get something to drink. I can't swallow. I'm serious. I have I'm on medication for a stroke. >> You need something to drink out here? >> No. You come with me. Do you have any weapons in the house, sir? >> No, I have nothing. >> No. No guns or anything in the house? >> No. I don't have I don't He has guns, I think. >> He has like a No, but >> does he live here? >> Yeah, he used to have I don't know what he does. >> Where Whose room is this right here? >> That's Ryan. >> Does Ryan own a uh Harley-Davidson? >> Yeah, it's right there. >> Okay. Does Ryan have a black helmet? >> I think he does. He doesn't always use it all. I think >> What was Ryan wearing today when you left? I'm not sure >> where where did you get the minivan from? Where did you pick the minivan up from? >> You picked it up. Bought it? >> No. Like today before you came back here just now. Where were you? >> It was in the garage. >> It was in the garage. You left in the garage? >> Yes. >> Is anyone else home right now? >> No. >> Would have said they were in the garage for a little bit before the minivan. >> I thought I heard some [ __ ] but I don't know. >> And I give up on all this crazy crap they do. Is there a particular parking lot you go to that that you pulled into to go walk the dog? >> Yeah. You know, right by the the lake park. Man, I'm from Chicago guy. I I don't know. You know, I don't know. >> It says Wakanda right there. >> I know. I know. I have a transfer, >> you know. I don't go in that thing. Let me get the power. He told them he drove back to the house for the dog's leash. That was the whole reason the van was moving. So, watch what one of the officers spots sitting right there on the front seat. >> I'm going to put your chain on you, your collar. Don't be scared, girl. Okay. Stay right So, you said you forgot the the extended leash. >> Yeah, the one the pulley one. I can't find any >> the pulley one. Is that the one right here in the driver's seat? The passenger. So the extendo leash that he was came back home to get was right here. >> Okay. [snorts] >> Oh, Trevor. So he came up here. He ditched the plate. Got it. Do you have a picture of your son? >> Um, no. Oh, yeah. On the um Oh, where did I hang it up? Hold on. Let me see. It takes me a minute. My brain's fried from the throat. Um, a picture. What did I um Oh, yeah. I got it right here. I just hung it up on something. Tell me what's going on. >> There's a man that's severely injured that was out in the street that got shot. >> Okay. >> Oh, so what what's going on? >> I don't know if it's your son >> or soaking wet >> or what? I don't know what happened. I have no idea on the kid on the kid. >> Let me see if the picture's right here. Oh, yeah. It's right here. Right there. Come on. But first of all, I asked him. >> Yeah, he doesn't know. He's from Wakanda. >> And then I go, >> he's just up here to help me down there. >> He's up here to help. >> The leash was already in the van. He never had to come back for it at all. Inside the house, the officers keep him talking. This is where it gets strange. >> So, the cameras work or no? >> This [ __ ] >> Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. >> Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. How do we know if they're working or not? >> I can look right now. [snorts] >> Is this your phone? >> Two Lakemore one Lakemore one from Lakemore 5. Where do you need it? >> You just had your phone. >> Where are we going? No, no, no. Let's sit here. I need >> You got to pull up the camera footage for me. >> It only works if you like. Like if you're >> send me the card if you're in this room. >> I'm telling you. Some weird [ __ ] >> Something to do with the internet. And the dog can ran out. >> Good thing I did from here. >> All right. What do you [snorts] want to know? >> I need to see the video camera footage from about >> an hour ago. >> Which one? >> From the front camera. >> Would it be okay if we searched the house? >> No. >> Were you able to pull up your cameras? >> Yeah. Which one you want? You said >> I want the one right here. >> Oh, that one never worked. You never How >> about this one? That one? I don't They're like worthless. They don't work. They work for like months. Can we walk around the inside of the house with you >> or what? >> Just want to make sure nothing started inside the house. >> He just walked in there with me. >> Yeah. All right, we'll walk in there. But >> so the cameras working at all or No. >> This one? No, that one though. They never work. That one didn't work. >> Where are your other ones at? >> There's one on the side of the house. >> What about that one? Does that one work? >> Don't work either. But the one inside works. >> The one inside? >> No, the one to the front works. >> All right. Can Can you pull that one out for us? Yeah, but it doesn't record or nothing. It's just like watching at that moment. >> It's a live feed. >> You know what Wise is? >> I don't know. >> My mouth is so dry. Wise camera. They're [ __ ] >> When was the last time you saw your son? >> He was eating. >> He was eating. >> Oh, he had pizza. I warmed up pizza from last night. >> Okay. So, he had pizza or you guys both had pizza? >> We all three. We all do. >> Who's the third person? >> Oh, her. I gave her some. >> Who's her? the dog. What's going on with my son? >> That's what we're trying to figure out. So, what happened this afternoon? >> What do you mean? >> Like you saw you we talked about you. >> You having pizza? I don't see it over here either. So then when when was your son going out? >> Oh, no. He went to a flight. He was taking a flight. >> Okay. So when when was he out working on his motorcycle? >> I don't know. I don't >> Did you see him out there working on it? >> No. We got to watch you to make sure you're okay. >> I'm fine. >> All right. Great. >> You're on my property. >> I know. >> Okay. >> I've got a right to be here. So, >> you have right to keep an eye on you, too. >> Yeah, we do. >> What? >> I've been talking to you about that for the last half hour. >> All right. Ma'am, when he came up to your car, what did he say to you? >> He said he had been shot by his dad. >> He said his dad shot him. >> Yeah. Okay. We had a >> And then some people said that a white van took off. >> A black van. Yes. >> A white. They said white. >> Oh, no. The one the one lady showed me a picture of a black one. >> Oh. >> And we found it. So >> Oh, okay. >> All right. >> All right, sir. Do me a favor. Turn around. Put your hands behind your back. >> I can't put my ammo. >> Oh, you can't? Because of your health issues? >> Yes. >> All right. I'm taking you into custody um because of the injuries to your son. appears to be their attempts to be attempted homicide. I'm not going to be asking you any more questions at this time. >> So, my dog's in there. What? >> Where's your dog at now? >> In the bedroom. I guess she's going to >> My partner will make sure that your house is secured. Okay. >> Please don't push me, man. I got her pushing me. >> I'm holding your arm. That's all I'm doing. >> You're pushing into me. >> Let's go. All right. Watch your feet getting in. >> Wait. Let me do it myself. >> I am. I'm just holding you up. I'm not pushing you or anything. >> One like more one. You got a pile? Is there any reason to believe there's any other suspects or anything? >> No, there is not. Not at this time, though. >> On the tape, you'll hear the officer say attempted homicide. That's because at that moment, Ryan was still alive in an ambulance headed for the hospital. He didn't make it. He was pronounced dead just before 2:00. James Pisanka was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, plus aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated domestic battery, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. That last one matters. He had old convictions out of Cook County, robbery and assault, which meant he was never allowed to own a gun in the first place. The gun itself has never been found. A judge ordered him held with no release. And as of now, the case is still open. No trial, no motive ever entered [music] into any record. And that's the one thing none of this footage can give you. Why? Police never released it. And the man in the driveway never offered it. What's left is the distance between two people on the same afternoon. A son who used his last clear words to tell a stranger the truth and a father who told the people trying to save that son that he simply didn't know. Brian wanted to spend his life in the sky. He was almost there. [music] If you want the cases, the algorithm buries, the ones we follow all the way through. Stick around. We'll see you in the next one.
