At 7:20 a.m. on a quiet Monday morning, Charlotte Meckllinburgg, police received a call from a resident at the Woodland Estates apartment homes. The caller reported a car break-in. But there was something even more alarming. The suspect wasn't just breaking into vehicles. He had pointed a firearm at a nearby resident. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. What they didn't know yet was that the suspect they were rushing confront was only 14 years old. Charlotte 911, do you need police, fire, or money? >> Outside of my apartment was a guy with uh a pistol trying to stole my car and he was point of me. He was trying to kill me. >> All right. And when did this happen? >> Right now. >> So he tried to rob your vehicle? >> Yes. >> And he had a gun? >> Yeah, he he was pointing to me. >> What did he look like? Was he white, black, or Hispanic? >> He's black. He has a a a black boot pack and he has a black pen and and black um um >> Okay. And he had a pistol >> sweater. Yeah, he had a pistol. He he is still right here in the apartment. >> Okay. So, he pointed the gun at you. Is that right? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, when you confronted him, he pointed the gun at you? >> Yes. Yes. He put the gun in my head. All right. And he's still in the parking lot. >> Yes. He's in front of the office. >> On the [ __ ] ground, man. I'm not playing with you. >> I'm not [ __ ] playing, bro. Get on the [ __ ] ground. [ __ ] Oh, [ __ ] When officers arrived at Wingellem Court, they spotted the suspect. A chase began. During that pursuit, the teenager opened fire, striking one of the officers in the upper body. The officer, later identified as Officer Whitley, was hit in the shoulder. He collapsed but survived thanks to immediate response. He was rushed to Atrium Main Hospital where doctor confirmed his injuries were non-lifethreatening. CMPD officers fired back but quickly managed to take the teen into custody alive. No one else was hurt in exchange. >> 1100, hold the channel. Bank three units taking him into custody. Some pointed to the teen's age, asking how a child could be caught up in such violent behavior. Others demanded accountability, reminding everyone that an officer could have lost his life that day. For CMPD, the message was clear. They were grateful the officer survived, and they considered it a miracle the situation wasn't worse. Keep going.
