On the afternoon of November 6th, 2022, at about 3:40 p.m., police officers were dispatched to reports of a man assaulting a woman near the intersection of West Lafayette Avenue and North Fulton Avenue. The suspect, later identified as Tyrie Morhead, was allegedly armed with a large knife during the attack. Body camera footage shows officer Zachary Rutherford arriving on the scene in West Baltimore and witnessing Morehead pinning a woman to the ground while pressing a butcher knife toward her head. Despite repeated commands from Rutherford to drop the weapon, Morehead refused to comply. Fearing for the woman's life, Rutherford discharged his firearm several times at close range. The victim managed to roll away unharmed and was neither stabbed nor struck by gunfire. Additional footage from officer trainee Michael Hazel captured officers immediately providing medical assistance to Morehead, who was then transported to the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center. He was later pronounced dead. Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison described the incident as a seemingly random attack. The victim told investigators she had been out running errands when Morehead suddenly confronted her. Morehead was widely known in the city for creating no shoot zones, a campaign in which he spray painted antiviolence messages across Baltimore neighborhoods.
