YOU SHOW ME YOUR HANDS NOW. >> STAND UP AND WALK TO ME. >> STAND UP NOW. >> Let him get ahead. >> Hell's here. Hell's coming. >> Monroe Township, Ohio. June 15th, 2023. At 4:30 in the afternoon, the quiet of a rural neighborhood is shattered by the sound of a 22 caliber rifle. When first responders rush to the property, they don't find a frantic shootout. They find a 32-year-old father sitting peacefully on his front steps, waiting for them. But in the grass nearby lies a reality too horrific to comprehend. How does a workingclass union man, a little league coach, and a provider suddenly fracture so completely that he targets his own blood? And what happens when a mind breaks, but the system misses the warning signs? >> Sounds like the male still on the porch. There are multiple in the yard 37. Here. Here. Here. >> We've asked. That's the last place we've been told. >> YOU SHOW ME YOUR HANDS NOW. STAND UP AND WALK TO ME. >> WALK TOWARDS US. >> STAND UP NOW. >> NOW. >> WALK TOWARDS US. STAND UP WITH your hands up. >> We got a visual in the mail. >> Not showing his hands. Not following commands. >> STAND UP NOW. >> NOT SHOWING HANDS or following commands. We got to go. >> Got to find cover first. If we ain't safe or >> SHOW ME YOUR HANDS NOW. STAND UP. Stand up. >> Moving. Moving. HOLDING. >> STAND UP. >> STAND UP NOW. >> STAND UP. >> STAND UP. EMS whenever you confirm that there's people that need first aid and that's for sure. He's not complying. >> Get the EMS over here. Well, I I do drugs when I do drugs now. >> I'm sober. >> I'm not trying to fight you. >> 63. Get your butt inside, Gatlin. Get your butt inside. >> We on primary. >> 29. We got three kids down. >> 63. We're 21. Have EMS respond over here. >> What do I do? My life? >> What are you doing, man? >> Hey, are you copying all this? >> Can I roll over? I ain't going to hurt you. I ain't going I ain't going to hurt nobody. >> You got anything on you? No, I ain't got nothing, man. Phone, that's it. I >> ain't mad. I ain't I ain't nothing. Just make sure that dog don't come out. I don't think he'll bite you. Just don't reach for him and try to grab him and pet him. He won't bite you. >> What's going on, man? >> Nothing. Uh, can I stand up? It's kind of uncomfortable. >> I'm going to get you. I ain't running away. You can do whatever you want with you. >> You the only one else inside the house. >> What? >> You the only one else inside the house. Sit down right here. My My daughter, she ran over to the fire department. >> Sit down. Uh, >> it's my stepdaughter. >> Put him in the cage. Oh, >> no. I got three of them. >> I got three. >> Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. >> Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. >> Huh? >> He's right there. We got him because Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. Right here. Need one right here. I'm not breathing. >> No. PS5. >> They're all being advised to come. They've requested two additional medics. There's also air flying, but they need an LV. The medics haven't answered it yet. >> To understand the nightmare on Laurel Lindale Road, you have to look at the months of pressure building inside the home. 34year-old Laura Dorman homeschooled her children trying to hold together an increasingly volatile household. She and her husband Chad shared three young boys, ages seven, four, and three, along with Laura's 14-year-old daughter. To the outside world, Chad was a hardworking fire protection installer. But behind closed doors, he was crumbling. The family was drowning in financial terror, their home facing repossession. Chad refused state assistance out of pride. Friction was the baseline. Neighbors regularly heard alcohol-fueled screaming matches. Yeah, I knew where and away. Hold on. We need information. Shooters information. Has him in the back of his car. Where is she at? >> She is sitting right here on the back. He >> Okay, >> I'll get information and then I'll go back and get it from Why are you banging your head, dude? Cuz >> it's hot as crap in here, man. Look at this. All right, we'll get the air on for you. >> Holy [ __ ] >> Do I need to put a helmet on you? >> No, but when you loosen, I will not hurt anybody. Any any person, any kind. >> Let me lock this down on you. >> I don't think we got them all the way locked down on you, big man. Here you go. You sit back, too. They won't tighten down. They were unlocked, so they tighten down while you're sitting. >> No. Can you can you like loosen them up >> just a tad, dude? I mean, honestly, like it's I'm not going to hurt anyone. I'm not I'm not worry about that. >> I'm not going to hurt myself, hurt anyone. >> It'll be up to him here in a second. Let's get the AC on for you. >> All right. See back here. >> Clear the house. >> I don't know. >> All right, we got to clear the house. See if there's any Nick, there was a dog. I missed it. It ran out. But >> did we remove the dog already? >> I missed it. And it's I don't know where it is. There's some blood in here. >> Sheriff's office. Anybody in here? >> Sorry. Some more here. >> Do we know where the third victim is? >> Ask. >> I've seen somebody was in an ambulance. >> Go ask field. They said uh so one of the seveny olds come out running. He turned around one time. Not sure where the field's at. One of your detectives are going down to university or wherever they're taking to any more depth. I searched the house with Khauer. There was blood inside where the shooting began. Um didn't see any other victims. We think all the victims are accounted. While firefighter Carl shielded the teenager behind the dumpsters, Laura fought for her babies. Displaying immense heroism, she physically wrestled Chad in the grass, grabbing the barrel of the rifle to rip it away. During the struggle, she took a bullet straight through her thumb, but Chad overpowered her. The 7-year-old managed to flee the house, sprinting into the adjacent open field. Neighbors sitting on their back porches watched in paralyzed horror. >> Get you down to UC. We got some detectives that'll meet you down there to talk to you there. Let's get down there to the hospital. Let them uh work on Okay. >> Did you witness anything? >> You did? Has anyone other than the other officer spoke with you? >> No. Okay. They're going to want to get a statement from you. >> Okay. >> But first, I'm going to get that command to you. >> Nandy and Mandy. Okay. And what was it that you saw? >> Well, I saw the guy running at my back door. Not thinking of anything. I seen the thing with a gun, thought it was a toy gun, but I looked away, came back, ran on the ground, was running back to the house. I not moving in the grass. I went out and took my trash out. I'm sorry. I didn't even tell this to the owner or the other cop. It's a lot. It's okay. >> I took my trash out. I heard the on the ground saying, "You just killed." I ran back in the house. My brother called me. He's on the fire department. told me to lock myself in the house in my room and don't go outside. I didn't know what happened after I heard that. >> Did you hear anything? >> No, I didn't. I hear I heard son of a kind of a gunshot when I went down, but I hear gunshots everywhere out here. That was it. >> So, you saw him running with the gun and you saw running away? >> No, I saw running to the back. >> Yeah. >> So, the running is not a nor it's normal for him to run that far. I thought it was a toy gun, but I looked away, looked back, was on the ground, got up over or got up and ran away back to the house. >> Okay. Did when he ran back to the house? Did he have anything with him? >> He had the gun with him. I don't know which one it was. I know they had three. >> You know about how old? >> It wasn't the youngest one. It might have been the middle one or the oldest one. >> He was wearing it was like brown or black t-shirt, jeans, and boots. He didn't have any hat on like he normally does. So pretty much this gap right here is where we saw it right about here and pretty much you can see the caution tape. That's where we saw him run across. Right. >> Mhm. >> Then heard the gunshot, saw him come back towards the black deck. Few moments later he came back out and then we saw him carrying uh I think the the body that he was carrying. We heard people in the road. So you said he s you saw him carrying a body back? >> Yes. >> From this vantage point pretty much right where that caution tape is towards the black deck and it was over his right shoulder like this, you know, draped over him. And he was a little taller than you, a little shorter than me, right? Like hereish. >> Okay. >> Heights probably. And pretty average build, you know. >> Okay. Did you see if he had hair? If he had what color hair he had? couldn't really see like his >> if he had anything on his head. >> Couldn't tell. >> Okay. >> I called 911. So, it was like >> Did you call 911 right when it happened? >> It was like not even 2 minutes. Couldn't have been 2 minutes. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine something like that would happen. Like the guy was kind of a jerk, but never would I have thought that he would go unhinged like that. >> Do something so horrendous. Yeah. Totally freaked out. Really? >> Yeah. I can't even believe it. >> Hello. >> Hello. Can I come in or you step out? >> You can you can come in. I didn't we didn't hear anything. I wasn't home yet. And it's my mom. She's very hard of hearing and she didn't even know anything was going on until you guys were all out there. >> Are you guys familiar with the family at all? >> I know that the man yelled an awful lot and I mean I just kind of think that that was his way of communicating. Okay. >> But other than that, no. >> Okay. If you don't mind, can I get your name? >> Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. My name is Kenneth. >> K N. He was loud and always yelling at something, but I just kind of thought >> What kind of house did he live in? >> The guy on the corner. >> Yeah. >> Well, it's just it's just it's just like the converted double wide or whatever you want to call them. >> Did you hear or see anything today in regards to the incident that we have going up on the corner? >> No, I I just looked I happened to look out the window and saw some ambulances and stuff and just >> Do you know around what time that was that you saw that? >> Uh about 4:30 4:40 something like that. I'm not sure exactly when it was. Do you guys have cameras that would face over there or capture any audio? >> We do have that camera. >> Is it motion only or does it record all the time? >> It records motion >> only at motion. Yeah. >> I mean, it faces down this way. It's probably not going to capture anything up there. >> It It might have catch caught sound if you wanted to. >> Yeah. You said that's at 4 right now. >> Yeah. >> He's You said it was about 4:26, I think, is when Shane got on her stuff on the scene. So >> yeah, we can hear well on hers at least at 42522 you can hear the male saying show me your hands and then between 42522 and 426 there's kind of you kind of hear male voices yelling cars are kind of going by after 426 I didn't hear any more male voices yelling so I assume at that point on the video he was already 21 dispatch said it was pretty I think within a minute of them going on scene versus the 21 time sheriff's office if I have conversations with What occurred today? Okay. >> Yeah, we only lived here a couple months ago. >> Okay. Is that just what you heard or have you observed that? >> Yeah. Her daughter used to live here until she got married. She know >> um you guys said you heard the gunshots. >> Yes. >> Okay. How long have you guys been home today? Since what? >> 3:30. >> Have you guys said she asked me what what was that? Were you guys outside when it happened? >> Because it went bang bang bang bang bang bang bang. Then it quit and I said, "Oh, I take guys practice." >> You say he was target practicing? Yeah. >> Were you guys able to hear any yelling and screaming after the gunshots? >> No. No. >> Around what time do you think you heard those gunshots? >> 3:30 maybe 3 3:30. >> How many gunshots you think you heard? rough estim she said, "What was that?" I said, "I believe that guy's crash." >> By the time the first deputy swarmed the driveway at 4:25 p.m. The massacre was over. Paramedics rushed into the yard, desperately performing life-saving measures. But the injuries were incompatible with life. Chad offered no resistance. He was handcuffed and placed in the back of a cruiser. At the Claremont County Sheriff's Office, detectives Mike Ross and Mike Rain began the interrogation. For the first hour, Chad played a frustrating game of evasion. You drink water there. Um, like I was saying, I'm Mike Ross. This is Mike Rain. We've met before, but you probably don't remember. Back in 2015, I came out to your house when you were on uh Virginia Drive when you lived on Virginia. Do you remember that? >> I want to talk to you about what happened today, but I got to read this to you real quick. Right. It says you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court? Yep. Do you understand? Oh, good. Do you by chance remember me at all? >> Hayes. >> Or have you ever been married previous? >> You're all right, Chad. What's your birthday? Where you living at? You all right, Chad? Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable? Are you hungry or do you need any like do you take any prescription medications that I can get for you? Do you feel okay now? >> Kind of. >> Why don't we do this? Why don't you just Why don't you just tell me what's going on? What happened today? >> I don't have anything to say. I don't really know. >> And that's okay. And maybe we can work through this. Maybe we can help you remember. >> I have no clue. What am I doing in here? >> Well, that's what we're trying to figure out. When's the last time you slept? >> Monday. >> Do you know what day it is today? >> Thursday? Friday? You'll be right Thursday. >> The origin of his final break began months earlier following a car wreck. Refusing medical treatment to avoid the bills, Chad pushed through the pain. The stress shattered his sleep cycle. By midJune, he hadn't slept in nearly 5 days. His exhaustion morphed into severe terrifying paranoia. The timeline of that Thursday morning reveals a man desperately crying out for help. At 8:28 a.m., Chad texted his boss, Tom, a cryptic and chilling message. He went into work, but the hallucinations overwhelmed him. >> Do you know what the date is? It's all right. I [clears throat] had to look myself. It's today's the 15th. Why don't you take a drink of water? Maybe that'll help you. Maybe you're just a little dehydrated. Are you tired now? >> Not really. >> When's the last time you ate any food? Breakfast? lunch. You remember what you ate? >> I didn't eat anything. >> Did something make you upset? >> I wasn't upset. >> What? What? Uh Were you feeling betrayed? No. Happy? Was there the weight on your back about something recently? What happened today? >> We were living in hell like the world. Hell in the Bible. You shoot shoot first, second, third. Well, first your wife. >> You didn't what? You didn't first. >> No, I didn't get it life. >> You didn't get to finish your life. I I don't know. >> Why? Why is that? >> You don't know who I am. [snorts] >> You say that, do you mean you just kind of lost your way? >> I'll wait for a lawyer. I I really don't know. Like, give me a couple days and let me [snorts] talk to a lawyer so that way I can get nice good answers. >> Do you have a lawyer? >> We have family lawyers. >> Who's that? Is there somebody [snorts] I can call? >> Keith Dorman. >> You related to you? >> Yes. >> Who's Keith to you? >> My dad, [snorts] Ruby Franklin. She's in the CIA. Call her. >> Is she a lawyer? Is Ruby a lawyer? She's in the CIA. >> I know. I heard you say that. I didn't know if maybe she was a CIA attorney or [snorts] But you said your dad is a lawyer. >> We have a family lawyer. >> But you don't know who that is. >> No, I don't think I've ever met you either. >> We've met. I remember you. You were the nice guy that lives on Virginia Drive. You like a drink of water. You had left your uh door open and you were worried about someone having a key to it and I checked it for you. >> Who would have had the key? >> Um I think you just left it open. I don't think anyone had a key. >> Oh, you didn't check it. Did you lock it all up? >> Well, you were there. I mean, we didn't have to lock it up. Do you remember having to come home cuz you forgot some tools? >> Tape like um the silver uh duct tape or what kind [clears throat] of tape we talking about? >> Duct tape. >> Did you get it? And did you go back to work after you got the tape? >> Chad left work early, driving to a local psychiatric clinic. But when he walked in and saw the front desk was temporarily empty, Chad drove home. Around 4:15 p.m., he told Laura and the boys to lie down in the master bedroom for a nap. Then he walked to his gun safe. He was the only one who knew the combination. He pulled out a Marlin Model 70HC.22 caliber rifle and loaded it. When the first shots echoed through the house, the 14-year-old stepdaughter witnessed the unthinkable. She grabbed the three-year-old trying to shield him, but the rifle was turned on her. She dropped the toddler and ran barefoot out the door, sprinting toward the fire station next door. >> And then what happened? Um, where were you working at today? Like onsite, a job where >> orthopedics. >> Oh, okay. And uh where's that at? And Amelia and Anderson. And then at some point, did you decide that you wanted to go home and take a nap or did you finish out your workday? Chad, I need you to stay with me. It's important. You good? You good? Do you remember asking you today if everything was okay with you? >> My thoughts and crazy thoughts and how I needed to go to the doctors and I scheduled appointment at the little clinic to go there. I didn't go there. I went home back to the doctors looked at me and said, "Yeah, the hospital." >> Tell me about those thoughts you were having. >> You got to the Bible's important to I want I'm curious of what kind of things you were thinking. Were you thinking about hurting yourself? No. >> Were you thinking about hurting? >> I was going to go to hell. Let them go to heaven cuz we're living in hell. >> So, you wanted to go to heaven? What about >> And how were you going to them to heaven? Chad, did you shoot? >> No. >> Did you shoot? >> Is that how you were going to heaven? >> Children in heaven now. Yes. And how to heaven? >> Why? >> Like an angel. >> Like an angel. >> Is that where you deserve to be is in heaven? >> In heaven. >> In a better place. Yes. >> And and so you your your idea was to make out there in a good way, in a kind way. >> No talking. >> When when you go hunting, do you have a particular gun that you use for hunting? >> No. Mustard. [clears throat] >> Describe it to me. Does it have a Woodstock? >> Is it a shotgun or rifle? What do you hunt? >> Yeah, we got some deer hunters here, too. Do you have more than one hunting gun or just one? Does your Mossberg shoot shotgun shells or does it shoot a different caliber? Have you been using drugs? Street drugs? >> No drugs ever. >> Meth? [snorts] >> No. I've joked around about it, but never did meth. Never did any type of speed. Never did anything. >> No ice. >> Nope. Nope. >> No coke. >> Nope. Nope. >> No fentanyl. >> Nope. Nope. [snorts] >> Just drink alcohol? >> Yep. Love beer? I haven't had a beer in a while. Actually, should I drink? No. I haven't had a beer in a while. >> What's a while to you? [snorts] >> Like two days. Usually I got to at least drink three, four, six a night. You know, >> you got And again, I don't >> I don't have to, but like that's what I do. You know, I go home, mow grass, drink a cup beers, >> and there isn't anything wrong with that, but again, I don't >> do that. >> I don't want to offend you, but do you have a drinking problem? I mean, I mow grass and drink. But I'm just asking, do you >> I don't I don't think so. I think like by the weekends, I mean, yeah, you might drink seven, eight, you know, but on weekdays, you only drink two or three. You go work >> and you've never had a DUI, so I don't think that you have a drinking problem. >> No, I haven't had a DUI. >> All right. So, yeah, I I mo I drink, too. I get it. >> Can you tell us a little bit about why you want to go to the little clinic? was poisoning me for a while >> when >> months ago. Just putting [ __ ] in my food was so bad I couldn't even eat because I would taste it. And >> do you normally drink beer to help you relax and sleep? >> Yeah, sometimes. But now, but I feel like for the last eight months I feel off. I know it's off. Real off. >> You seem a little off this this afternoon. You feel like you're in and out of thinking things. >> Yep. >> Your thoughts, do they do they bother you? >> Never listen. Listen to and over. I said, "I got bad thoughts. I got bad thoughts. Help me out. Take me to the doctor." You know, cuz I don't know. I don't know where I was going. I got I'd go to work and I didn't even know I'm going to work. I kept kept calling mom. I kept calling dad. Kept calling everybody. >> I know. My whole family to help me. Nobody would help me. BUT >> NOBODY HELP ME AT ALL. Just take me somewhere. >> We're going to get you some help, Chad. That's why we're here. >> No, it's I've asked and asked and asked. I can't do everything. >> No, you can't. >> Can't do it all. I can't do it all. >> Do you make the money? >> So, you're you're working hard every day. You're making the money to pay the bills and [clears throat] you're just asking for some help and then you're not getting it. >> Oh, don't make me mad. I do it all. I just do it. I don't care. I need to argue and I don't care who does it. It just needs done. All finished. Let's go. >> Is that why you were mad today? >> I wasn't mad. >> Cuz you couldn't get help. >> I'm not mad. Not mad at all. Nothing. Wasn't drinking. No mad. What happened? >> That's what I want to ask you. What happened today? I don't know. I wasn't there. >> I don't know what happened today. What happened? What? When you came home from work today, did you go to to your safe? >> Foil tape. >> Say what? >> Foil tape. >> Yeah. Earlier today, you had to come home because you forgot tape. And then um later today, did you get in your safe? >> Did you keep the gun in your safe, Chaz? Can't get to it. >> Yes. >> So, is that where it normally is? >> If there was guns in it, how many guns do you own? >> Four. Five. >> Are they all uh long guns or are any of them pistols? >> All of them long guns. Do either of those 22s have like a wooden stock? >> All of those are wooden stocks. >> And the reason I'm asking is because earlier you told Mike and I that you wanted to send heaven. >> They're in heaven. >> Um, and so I'm that's why I'm asking, did you need that rifle to do that? I don't I'm I'm confused. I don't know how you would send to heaven if you didn't use your rifle. How would you have done that, Chad? Heaven. How come only were sent to heaven? Why were >> the Bible >> What's the Bible say about women going to heaven? >> It's good. >> People did deserve to go to heaven because they didn't go. Why didn't they get to go? >> Cuz I I don't know. >> Well, you got to help me understand it. I >> Why did I get to go? >> You said that you were going that you wanted to go to hell. >> I don't want to go to hell. I'm in hell. >> I'm sorry I misunderstood you. But help me understand why I didn't go to heaven. Is it because you wouldn't help you? >> Well, I didn't get to go to heaven. I don't either. And I'm only repeating what you told me. You told me to heaven. And I'm trying to figure out >> Yeah. I don't know. >> Why did not >> I wasn't there. >> Chad, you were there. >> I was working. >> You did work today, but you came home. >> Huh? I didn't go home. There ain't no way I went home. >> Tell me where you >> What time is it? >> It is now. >> What are we doing here? >> 7:10. >> What are we doing here? It's 7:10 tonight. >> Chad, I want to know who shot. Yes. >> What are you talking about? >> And who shot these good? >> Who sent him to heaven? >> Well, you talking about sending them to heaven. >> Well, that's what you said. >> What? >> You told us you deserve to go to heaven. >> Yeah. All kids should go to heaven. >> Yeah. Okay. But deserve to go, too. >> We're all God's children. >> So, everybody deserves to go. >> Yeah. He'll be saved. So, did you help today to get there? >> What peace? >> Through this field. That's why I printed that picture out. I wanted you to show me where you were. >> What are you talking about? >> A neighbor told us that you were chasing through the field and you had a rifle. Did you? >> I'm here. >> Holy [ __ ] >> Yeah. Holy [ __ ] So, what happened? >> I don't know. >> Have you ever had these thoughts before? >> No, never. I've been I've been having crazy [ __ ] like thinking like watching people's hands flick and the the whole entire world just moving so fast can't keep up. It was just driving me insane. I kept I keep telling everybody like I'm going nuts and they're like go get help. Well, go get like anxiety medicine or whatever kind of medicine or whatever is wrong with you. I don't want to talk to you. I'm done talking to you. >> I should have took you to the doctor today. Absolutely took you to the doctor and helped you. What are you looking for? >> What? >> What are you looking for? Chad, you'd mentioned to me and Mike that you believed here was poisoning you. Would you be willing to let us check to see poisoned you today? >> Oh, yeah. And I swear on this, I have not had any drugs in my life. >> I believe you. And I'm concerned I was trying to poison you. So, um, I'm asking you if you said yes. You let us check. The way that they check that. >> You can pull out my hair or my blood, whatever you want to do. >> Okay. Thank you. I appreciate that. Y >> because that's important to find out if you were poisoned today. >> You can go to my back spiral. I don't care. >> How do you think they got shot today? >> I don't know. >> Okay. If you had to guess, how would you what would you think happened to them today? >> I don't know. Is it really 7:00? >> It is 7:00 at night. I can get you a snack. What do you like? >> Dinner. I was talking about dinner. Like >> I can get you something to eat right now. >> I ain't hungry. >> I don't know if maybe some M&M's would help you feel better. >> No. >> How late did you work today? >> 2 2:30. You're just gone out of it. You felt like you were out of it? No. No. No. I felt like I I was I was just upliving my life talking to you like, you know, I was talking to you and I was just >> And so you take you to the doctor to the little clinic. Where is that from your house? Is that pretty close? >> A million. >> How far is that? >> And you because you thought the people there might be able to help you with these thoughts. Is that the help you were looking for is to stop these thoughts? >> Did something hurt? >> What? >> Did something hurt? Is it like a headache or a stomach ache or >> My ankle hurts? >> Your ankle? >> Yeah. It hurt too bad. The shoulder always hurts. >> Is that why you want to go to little clinic or to get rid of the thoughts? >> The thoughts. >> And you thought they might be able to help you. >> And were those thoughts you said you felt like you were stuck in the Bible? >> Yeah. >> And did the Bible did this story you were stuck in tell you to do something? >> I printed that off. I like I said, I was I thought I knew you, so I was trying to figure out where I knew you from. >> Where's that at? Where did I get that picture? Is that my license? >> Yes, sir. >> Have you ever had thoughts? >> I'm dead. >> I'm dead, ain't I? >> I'm in hell. >> You're not dead, Chad. You're not in hell. >> Talking to me and Mike. >> I'm just going to do this until the fire comes up and I'll just be burning inside this room. >> Do you ever have thoughts of hurting other people? Is that something that you were going to talk to the doctor about? >> No. No. Never. I would never hurt anybody. >> Unless you hurt me, but I would never hurt anybody like shoot anybody or anything like that. I'll go knuckles to knuckles with you all day. Well, you've been in some some fights with your brother, right? I fight with my brothers. >> Oh, yeah. We got fist fights >> all the time, probably. >> Yeah. >> Me, too. >> Yep. >> But you've never had any thoughts to hurt yourself. >> Yeah. >> What about other people? >> No. >> Even a fleeting thought? Not something that you acted on, but just something that popped in your head and popped out. >> No. I need a cigarette. >> Can I smoke a cigarette? >> I have some cigarettes, but I can't give them to you just yet. We need to talk a little bit little bit more before I give you a cigarette. All right. >> I don't even smoke. >> It's up to you. If you want one, I'll give one to you here in a little bit, but not yet. We need to talk a little bit more. >> I don't know. >> So, maybe not heavy. >> I don't know. Is this your water? You have to drink this. >> That's yours. You can have it. Did you Did you fire your gun today, >> man? I need to step outside. >> You getting hot? >> I'm getting antsy. >> Yeah. >> No. Did you Did you fire any fireworks today? It's getting around that time of year where people put off fireworks. No. What if I told you that you did fire your gun today? Would you believe me? >> Maybe. >> What if said you fired your gun today? You be lying. >> I don't know. >> Lie. >> Yes, I know. >> You lie about >> No. [ __ ] >> Chad. >> I don't know. >> You do know. >> No, I don't. It wasn't me. >> Well, then who did? >> I don't know. >> Who shot those? >> I don't know. Who? Why am I in here? Why am I out there? >> That's what we're trying to figure out. >> That's what I want to figure out. >> So, help me. Okay, let's walk out here and go find go find and go find a [ __ ] that >> you told Mike and I that are in heaven in heaven. Dead. But let's >> Yes, they are dead. Chad, who shot the >> I don't know. >> You do know. You're not helping me. >> I don't know. >> How did you know that? >> You said somebody >> That doesn't They're dead. >> So they're alive. >> You told them dead. >> They're alive. >> Chad, you told dead. >> No, you said somebody >> I did say that. I have never said they were dead. You dead. How do you know that? Cuz you they got shot >> after you told in heaven >> you got shot. >> Who? And don't give me some you know I don't know [ __ ] You know tell me who shot him. >> That wasn't Chad. >> If it wasn't Chad, who was it? Cuz you know who it was. >> I don't know. But it wasn't Chad. >> Was it the bad version of Chad that you don't like? >> I don't know. >> The Chad that has problems with their thoughts. That Chad. >> Holy [ __ ] >> Holy shit's right. >> You take these off me. I will not hurt your guys whatsoever. No, >> I don't hurt nobody. No, I will never hurt anybody. I don't hurt anybody. >> Well, then why are dead? >> I have no clue. >> Do you very much more than anything in the world? >> Well, then why tell me if you >> I didn't. >> Yes, you did. I got to step outside a cigarette or something. You can't step outside. I will get you a cigarette at some point, but not right now. I'll get you food if you want food. >> Stay. I can't even stay focused. I have no clue. There's no focusing in here. >> Why don't we take a break? We'll go to the bathroom. If you wanted some food or a drink, we'll get you a drink, but we need to talk. All right. >> Dip dip with you. So, there's the Chad that goes to work every day, makes a living, brings home a paycheck, cuts the grass, has a beer at night, gets along pretty well, has a family, does hunting, does fishing, sounds like a pretty happy Chad. There's this other Chad that has these feelings, you know what I mean? And doesn't feel good is so that's a that's a different Chad. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And so, how often does this other Chad that doesn't feel good, is that like every day? Is that getting worse? Is that why you asked for help? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. But you didn't get the help that you needed. >> No. >> So this other Chad that doesn't feel good, is he the one that want go to heaven? It's probably not the good Chad. The Chad that goes to work every day and drinks a beer and cuts the grass. It's a different Chad, right? >> Yeah. >> So could this other Chad have done that, which is why you don't remember it? You think that's that could happen? What? So it sounds like there's two different >> shot. >> That wouldn't be the Chad that goes to work every day. >> What's that? >> Did I shoot? >> You did. >> Yes, Chad. Not going to lie to you. Yes. And what Mike is asking, was it the the bad Chad that you don't like or was it the the happy Chad? Which Chad was it? Oh. You did, Chad. [laughter] >> No, no, I didn't. What the [ __ ] for >> Well, >> they don't deserve it. >> Well, but you said you want them to hell. >> That, right? >> Deserve to live their life, then go to heaven. >> What? I agree with you. >> Yes, >> I agree. >> Yeah, I agree. Look, you guys are messing with me. >> Chad, we wouldn't do that. >> I would never mess with you about this, Chad. And I need you to be honest with us and tell us what happened, >> dude. I don't know. I just had I just I didn't I I want you to tell me I did it. I told you I didn't. You don't understand that. We're trying to understand. I'm >> not against you. All right. I'm not sitting here saying I didn't do it. I'm asking you to tell me if I did. That's why I'm sitting in this chair. >> Well, let me Chad. I wasn't there and Mike wasn't there. We don't know what happened, but we can tell you was said that you we want to know what happened. >> I have no clue. Ask >> Okay, >> good. I will. But I also want to know from Chad just >> she will tell you. >> I'm gonna I'm gonna ask every one of your neighbors. I'm going to ask >> that is okay. >> But I also want to ask you what happened. >> I have no clue. >> Jed, it's important to understand the why so that you can get some help because it's really important to understand the why. >> You said you need some help. >> Yeah. But you got to get past the why. >> I did need help. I feel adorable now. >> What did you feel? >> But I can't believe I did that. >> I don't believe that [ __ ] at all. >> Well, who do you think did it? >> I don't I don't know. >> See, I think it was the other Chad. I think it was the unhappy Chad that didn't feel very good. >> Is that your gun? >> That's your gun, isn't it, Chad? >> Yeah. >> What's that shoot? What rounds are in that? >> Borla 22. >> What is it? >> Barl 22. And do you normally keep it topped off? The magazine topped off >> in a separate part >> in a separate part of >> so >> your safe. >> Yeah. Well, >> okay. So the gun >> for two of the safe and then it clips out of the gun and it's up in the top shelf of the of the >> Okay. So for this gun to look like this, you would have to get the empty gun out of your safe and get the the the loaded magazine and put the mag magazine into the rifle. Correct. >> Yes. Do you normally keep it topped off, you said, or do you have to load rounds into the magazine? In other words, is the magazine in your safe empty or loaded? >> Loaded. >> And how many rounds does it typically keep? Do you typically keep >> you do you always keep 10 rounds in it? >> Good. Yeah. >> Okay. And you said before that does not have access to that safe. Huh? >> You told me and Mike that does not have access to the combination before >> ever get in your safe. >> I don't see I don't think so. >> So, who got that gun out of your safe today? >> Oh, it's not me. >> The detectives didn't buy the amnesia. His DNA was the only DNA on the weapon. Aside from the victims, they pressed him on his timeline, his texts, and the paranoia. Slowly, the erratic defense crumbled. Chad hadn't just snapped in a blind rage. the extreme sleep deprivation had triggered a severe biblical delusion. He genuinely believed the world was ending, that they were living in hell, and that a twisted interpretation of a Bible story demanded the ultimate price. >> It had to be you. There's nobody else that has >> It was not me, dude. >> Was it? >> No. No. >> Do >> But it was not me. >> Does your father have access to your safe? >> No. >> Your mother? >> Nobody does. >> It was not me. Okay. So, follow me, Chad. You're telling me nobody has access to your safe but you. Yet, I have a picture of your gun. >> It was not me. >> It was not me. >> How did we get a picture of your gun? >> It was not me, dude. >> Is it Is it possible that it was the Chad that has the thoughts? Is it possible that you did it but don't remember because it was a different version of you? Was it that version that needed help that couldn't get help? That had those thoughts? >> What? >> You said there was another version of you that had those bad thoughts. >> What is going on tonight? Listen, Chad. Listen. >> I I know. >> I really don't know. >> You do know. >> I don't. >> Listen. Listen to me. Okay. Let me talk here for a second. Okay. I've watched a little bit of you talking and every time that we talk about put your head down, your face is beat red. Somebody who doesn't know what happened, your face wouldn't be beat red because you really wouldn't know your face is beat red because you're nervous. >> No, I'm not nervous. >> What What What happened? What happened this morning when you went to work? >> I went to work, couldn't finish it. Couldn't finish the duck work cuz I need roll tape. Extra roll tape. I had I need one more. went home, ate. After that, I back and put the tape back on there or on the duck because Cory only gave me a roll one roll of tape for the duck rack and then I went back home. >> Were you feeling well? Were you sick or you home? Well, you said you ate when you went home the first time, right? So, you didn't go home for lunch? >> I forced myself to eat. >> Okay. Ate my walk. >> How come you haven't slept for a few days? >> I don't know. >> What kind of stress are you under? I mean, is it stress or >> I don't know. I don't think it's stress. I don't know what it is. >> Who you had trouble sleeping in the past? >> Never. >> Never. When did this start? What do you do like when you can't sleep? Do you do you you got a hobby that you do? Do you go out in the garage? You go outside? Do you do something >> to keep yourself occupied? >> So, let's say through the night when everybody's asleep, >> you just lay there. Do you watch TV? >> Try to, but I I don't like I can't. >> And then what? The alarm goes off and you start the day again. >> No, the alarm don't even go off. I turn it off before alarm even goes off. >> Then you take a shower, eat breakfast and go or what? >> Uh, no. I sometimes take a shower. >> Yeah. In bed and you and you said you said remember I'll always love you. Thought it was kind of odd. Not that you say you just the way you said it. You said you've been acting weird for a few days. Just off. Didn't know what was going on. >> Yeah. Uh, I I I've been I've been asking everybody for help. >> Asking people for help. >> Yeah. >> Do you have You have insurance, correct? Health insurance. >> Yep. >> Why didn't you go get help? Why does somebody else have to do it for you? >> I mean, you're the provider of the house, right? You go to work, you you do everything. If you needed help, why wouldn't you go to the doctor? >> I don't know. >> I don't either. >> I was I was always told never go a doctor. >> Why? >> I don't know. >> She told me the doctor sick. I would. >> Yeah. Yep. >> You know what happened tonight? >> I didn't put my picture. I have over >> what? Help me understand what set you off tonight to make you just do the things that you've done. >> I have no clue. >> But something has had to have happened to be building this up for days or whatever how long you've been feeling like this and not sleeping. >> Something's something has triggered or something has set you off. Something traumatic has happened. >> No, nothing's traumatic has happened. >> It was you. You shot these. You're a monster. >> I'm not a monster. >> [ __ ] >> I'm not a monster. >> Well, I'm I thought that I believed that you weren't, but I'm start. You won't talk to me about it. You You say you can't remember. That's [ __ ] You remember something, >> dude? I didn't do it. >> You got to remember getting the gun out of the safe. >> I didn't get the gun out of the safe. >> You're the only one with access to the safe. How the [ __ ] are you not the one that got the gun out of the safe? >> I didn't. >> You said your own words. Your DNA is the only DNA on that gun other than these three. You're scared. >> We're not here to to talk about if you did it. We're here to talk about why. >> I don't know. >> We know you did it, but we have witness independent witnesses. >> I don't know. I don't know why. >> I want to understand. >> I don't I I really don't. I want to understand, too. I want to understand, too. >> But something has happened that led up to this. >> Nothing. I had no clue, dude. from what? >> Everything. We're in hell, dude. This is the fiery gates of [ __ ] hell. And Jesus is coming. You don't know who's going to get stuck in his top. >> You were afraid that it was coming to an end. You wanted to make sure. >> Right now, just lined up. >> Lined up. And who did you shoot first? >> I messed up. In order to get to heaven, in order for it all to work, that had to be 4 3 2 1. Then I went, "Oh, never shoot myself." Because if you shoot yourself, you go to hell. When did you what order? First, >> I don't know. >> Second. >> Start with the youngest and >> I [clears throat] don't know. >> The youngest. You said you lined them up. >> Where'd you line them up at? But where did they line up at? >> I don't know. >> Well, see, now we're back to the I don't know [ __ ] We were We were having a good conversation and now we're back to the I don't know crap. Chad, >> I don't know. >> You just told us you love and you had an order and it has to be in a certain order. So, what's that order? >> I don't know. You you hadn't figured out the order or whatever you did because then what happened? It's supposed to be >> you told me seven was 13 is not 13. >> No 13. >> Okay. How old? >> Three. >> Be the next one, right? >> Yeah. >> Why? Because when when the Bible it says something about [snorts] it says something and you got to give up and then sacrifice when then when God the thing and says uh you you do this and then to heaven and everything else and he and he test you and you have to do it. You you can't deny it. You have to do it. You can't stop. And you did >> for God. Now I'm in hell and he's going to come down and it's going to be a it's going to be a mess and I feel so bad because I don't think I I didn't get it. I didn't get [laughter] it. I should have did first that suffered. >> Fall into that. >> Chad believed that by executing his family, he was saving them, sending them to heaven before the apocalypse. When asked why he didn't shoot his wife or himself, his logic was rigidly locked inside his own psychosis. Suicide was a sin, meaning he had to be the one to carry the burden of murder to ensure they reached the gates of heaven. He told detectives his only regret was that he messed up the descending order because Laura fought back. As the interrogation stretches into its second hour, Chad spiraling further into his delusions, asking for his spinal fluid be tested because he believed his boss poisoned his food. which is why you let her run. >> Yes. >> When did you come up with this plan? >> I didn't come up with it. >> When did it come upon you that this is what you were going to do? Probably last night because you were telling >> No, not last night. >> Well, then why were you acting differently towards >> kind of just kind of lay there? >> I mean, would that be the >> Well, no. It wasn't last night. >> Knows you well and last night something was going to happen. >> Would it have been in the past? Is this why you can't sleep? Because you knew you had to do it. >> Yeah. And I was sick to my stomach. sick to my stomach for forever. >> See, Chad, now I believe I believe that. Now we're talking. Now we're having a conversation. >> It's all through that Bible. And I trusted God. >> Where's that Bible now? >> I didn't read the Bible. Well, I I never read the Bible. I got told the story, but it was in church. And then >> what church? >> I don't know what church I went to. >> How long ago was it? >> Years. But I think my dad also told me the story. >> Did you take any notes anywhere? >> No. >> Have you wrote any of this down anywhere? >> No. Did you ever >> how to order signs all over the [ __ ] place? People are walking like zombies and it's going to be a nightmare down here. It's going to be [laughter] it's going to be a mess. And I'm not going to have my family anywhere near harm. I don't know. >> Or that you're about your feelings about it. >> No, I don't think so. Cuz you should never put that ever. >> That's a heavy burden. Dad, do you remember trying to stop you from shooting your >> Yeah, that's why you you got first. >> Tell me about what happened. How why messed up? You didn't stop. You didn't really But I was didn't really put up that much of a fight. >> Trying to get the gun away from you. >> No, not really. >> How come you didn't sit down in the yard and you were standing on the porch? >> Cuz I thought I did it in the wrong order. >> What is the order that you did? >> I don't know. But somebody's got to get it right. Somebody has to get it right. Dude, >> when you say you didn't do it in the right order, you're you mean um first you shot You say you did it in the wrong order. You should have shot first. Is that what you're saying? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> I'm just trying to go by the scripture. >> Do you know what scripture? >> I was told it >> by >> I just listened >> by your father. >> Yes. >> So, can he tell me what scripture? >> I don't know. >> When did he tell you the scripture? I I when I was probably little. I remember being little when he told me. >> Okay. >> So, for sure when you were little. Not probably when you were little. >> Yeah, for sure. When I was little and it did not hit me at all and I didn't know and I didn't think about it at all until recently. >> Is there something that happened that triggered that in your mind to make you think about it? >> I don't know. We went to church a while ago. >> What church? >> Uh the one over there about in Ailia and and we went over there in Memphisville. We went over there and then uh >> was it a Catholic church or was it >> n Catholic Christian >> Christian >> and then it just I started remembering all the things about the Bible and Jesus and God listen everything and that's that's that's I didn't start thinking about it then you know that might have triggered it maybe I I don't know I don't know what happened cuz I didn't want to keep going to church cuz I couldn't live with myself. So sometime in 2022, >> yeah, >> you knew that you had to do this. >> Uh 222. No, no, not really. I didn't know I had to do it. I knew I had You're supposed to give up your >> immediately. That's what I was told. And when I was little, I forgot all about it. Every bit of it. And then you did it later. >> Did you? >> And then if you have one, then you got to do it in order. You can't you can't just have two. Like you got if if you just have one, it's easy. It's supposed to be easy. If you have if you have uh more than more than one, it's harder. The love, you got to beat it. >> And when you went to church, you remembered all those things. >> Yeah. >> Are in heaven. >> Are in heaven. I know they are. I know for a fact they are the best thing. I mean, I could never give them anything else. >> Um, since you're being honest with us now, the rifle, did you get it out of the safe? Yes. >> And did you um separately grab the >> I don't remember that. >> But you said that you don't normally keep the rifle and the magazine together, right? >> Yeah. I don't I don't. So I had to. >> All right. So you got the rifle out of the safe. >> Do you remember what room lined up in? >> Yeah. They didn't light up. Well, they they sat on the bed. >> Was that in your room? >> Yeah. >> Is that where the safes had to? >> Yeah. >> And then did it that continue to the outside area? What >> did it then continue outside? It started in the bedroom, but did it not continue outside? >> Who ran through the field? >> And did you have to? >> Yeah. >> And then did back into your yard? >> Yes. To run. He wasn't going to run. It's hard. You're in heaven. Hell is here. Hell is coming. There's [snorts] how to order signs everywhere. There's everything. All the signs are there. I try to look past it. Every time I look up, I see it all. So, I look down cuz I know the signs. And then I look up and I see every bit of the signs and I know what I had to do is I was still from a little boy. You're gonna have to do this. This is on you. Well, I appreciate you being honest with me. I was honest with you and you were honest with me. Tight. All right. >> Chad Dorman didn't want to die. He just wanted control. He was charged with three counts of aggravated murder and multiple counts of felonious assault. The Claremont County prosecutor called it >> one of the most monstrous craven cowardly acts will ever be our misfortune suit. >> Prosecutors initially sought the death penalty, but to spare Laura and her 14-year-old daughter the unimaginable trauma of taking the stand and reliving the massacre. The state offered a plea deal. On August 2nd, 2024, Chad pleaded guilty. 3 days later, Chad was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus 16 additional years. He will die in an Ohio prison. It is easy to look at a man sitting calmly on his steps after executing his children and see a monster. This is unmasked.
