Kind of like moving him with my foot. Like nothing. As soon as he gets up he goes he goes he goes I was like I was like, "David, what did I do?" He's like, "You what you did." I did not do anything. I promise you you were sitting at this bar out here. We were talking to these two guys. He was talking to them all night. I was talking to them all night. All of a sudden he just walks away in the I promise you I have no clue what I did wrong. I was trying to get him up out of the grass and get into our hotel room and get him to sleep. He just goes off. shoving pushing to the ground. I got up. Did anybody see this? I mean, I don't think anybody saw it, but somebody heard and that's why they called the cops and then yes. >> Did anybody see anything while was going on out there? >> Yes, she came back with a swollen lip. >> She did? >> Yeah, and she she did say she hit him. >> She said she hit him. Did you saw her like leaving like getting leaving uh the lobby? >> Well, she ran in and out of here three or four times. >> Okay, so her lip was at one point not swollen and now it is. And then did you see anything about the guy? >> No, I haven't seen the guy at all. >> Okay. >> He's been in the middle of the parking lot the whole time. >> Okay. >> For some reason when she came down here she was looking for him. He was not in the building and she was all over I think he was walking away you know like trying to get away from her. >> Okay. Yep. >> And then after about less than 5 minutes, right Jess? About less than 5 minutes she went outside and then we started hearing screaming. >> We're not certain what exactly happened but >> Okay. >> like he was trying to get away from her to the >> This whole trip he's just been stand-offish like like all this and I'm just like I do not want to press charges on him. I do not want him to go to jail. He owns a business. We're all the way from Minnesota. We have a flight to get on on Friday. Like and I guarantee he's over there telling a whole different story. >> Well, that's usually what happens. >> Yes. >> Let me talk to him. >> And I'll go find him. >> Okay. There were some shenanigans that happened tonight. Do you remember know happened? >> No, what happened? >> I'm asking you, you were there, I wasn't. >> I don't know. I want to know. >> So, your girlfriend >> right guy, trust me. Yeah. >> Is that your girlfriend? >> My girlfriend, yeah. >> Okay. What she's saying is, I guess she was trying to wake you up. I guess you pushed her or something. >> I don't know what it is. >> I don't know, I wasn't there. >> I don't know either. >> Well, I'm going to have to I'm going to have to take both of you. I hate doing that, but >> I know that I hit him in the face. I can tell you that for sure. If you want to arrest me, whatever, that's fine. I am the one that actually threw punches and hit him. I don't know how I got in that position, I cannot tell you. I know I got shoved, I know I got pushed to the ground. All I know is I threw first punch. I was repeatedly hitting him in the head. That's all I know. >> But you were not throwing a punch at all, and you had not been pushed and then smacked in the face. >> Yes. >> This person >> Yeah. >> Can you be honest with me? >> Yes. >> Do you remember getting pushed or not? >> I can't tell you, I don't remember a single thing. All I know is I went to try to wake him up, that's all. >> Can you do me a favor? >> Yes. >> Can you stand up? >> Yeah. Uh-huh. >> Yeah. >> Can you put your hands behind your back? >> Why am I getting arrested, bro? >> I was hoping you would have dressed up. >> I just really couldn't tell you what happened first. All I know is he wouldn't want me arrested, and I don't want him arrested. >> And I appreciate you, and I appreciate your honesty. >> I believe, cuz like I told you, I don't get set off unless somebody puts hands on me first. >> I understand. >> So, like the lip cuz I can feel them on my lip. I can >> I can see some redness there. >> Yes. He definitely put hands on me first. That's all I know. >> Okay. >> So, I don't just go off like that for no reason. >> Okay, but can you just I'm going to go right in and ask him. >> But why? >> Because >> he has scratches, and he has wounds that are more of an aggressive aggressor. >> Okay, so what like a total >> You have a swollen hand. Okay. All of this, everything you told me is going to go on your record and ultimately the judge and the state attorney will decide where the case goes from here. But for tonight, you you have to go to jail. >> I I know you're going to be like, "Oh, you're switching your story cuz you don't want to go to jail." No. I was telling you that he did not aggress it because I didn't want him to go to jail because he owns a business. He's successful. I'm not successful at all. And I was trying to look out for him. Seems like he's not looking out for me at all. And but I can tell you for free, he pushed me, maybe not to the ground, but he shoved me and that's what set me off. Okay? I was just trying to protect him and now I feel very stupid because I'm about to spend the night in jail for doing nothing, for literally getting hands put on me and putting hands on him back. lying to both of you to try to get him not in trouble because I care about his business, I care about his reputation. Clearly he doesn't give a [ __ ] about me, but since he wants to put hands on me and my parents warned me about that [ __ ] but anyways. >> Okay. >> I just want you guys to understand that I was telling you I don't remember what happened because I DIDN'T WANT HIM to get in trouble. I didn't think I was going to get in trouble. Are you kidding me? I was lying to you >> state of In the state of Florida, if we determine a primary aggressor, we have to make an arrest. >> Why does he get treated like Why does he >> He's not getting treated crazy. He's spoken for. >> Why does he get treated he's the one that started everything? >> He's not being treated good. >> He's the one that put hands on me and everything. >> [screaming] >> Do you want to get out OF THE HANDCUFFS? >> I WANT TO GO HOME TO MY FAMILY. MOM. >> [laughter] >> I SHOULDN'T HAVE LISTENED TO HER. He's a mother He was a piece of [ __ ] >> Okay. >> I shouldn't have listened to her. It's not me. You're standing up for him. HE'S HE DID IT. I DIDN'T DO anything wrong. [crying] He's the one who should be here. LIKE HE'S BEEN HOW MANY TIMES? I didn't do anything. I was trying to protect him because I care about him and his [ __ ] business. And I care about him and his son and his family. I don't have anything. I was just trying to protect him. Me and you are right here. Neither one of us wanted to go to jail. I never do anything wrong in my whole life. I'm 19 years old and I only had a minor one time. I don't do this [ __ ] I don't end up in handcuffs. [crying] My mom is going to [ __ ] hate me. I didn't do anything wrong. You realize that. I didn't do anything. >> I didn't >> Do you want to get the handcuffs off? >> I just want to go home to my family. >> Okay. Well, we got to get through this first. >> I just want to go home. I miss my mommy. I can't do this. >> Okay. You're doing good. >> [crying] >> Do you want to get the handcuffs off? >> I don't care about the [ __ ] handcuffs. >> Okay. well we got to go upstairs. >> I want to go home. I want to never see this [ __ ] AGAIN IN MY LIFE. ALL HE'S DONE IS PUT ME through [ __ ] hell. All he's done is put me through [ __ ] hell and now here I am in jail FOR HIS ASS BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT to tell you guys that he hit me first because I care about him. And now here I am in trouble for what? For protecting him. >> Okay, let's get out and let's get upstairs so we can get through this. >> It was >> Come on, let's go. >> I want to go home. >> Sit up. >> No, I >> Are you leaving? >> regulate it. I CAN'T REGULATE IT. >> SHE'S GETTING resistant to this point. I'm not This is just ridiculous. >> I mean I I >> This is She was perfectly fine over there. No problem at all. Not you, but it's just it's nuts that >> I just kind of know him. >> Yeah, I know. No, no, I understand. I thought you you always been great. It's just ridiculous. Like she's This is a big act. It's a big act. But now but now we got to go take her and put her over there and she's going to do the same thing and what >> [crying] >> What are you >> At the beginning of this encounter, the woman seemed convinced that she could explain everything away. She told officers that she was simply trying to help her boyfriend, that he was heavily intoxicated, and that she was only trying to get him back to the hotel. But, as the officers continued asking questions, the situation became much more complicated. Her story changed several times. At one point, she said she could not remember what happened. Later, she admitted that she had thrown the first punch and repeatedly hit him. She also acknowledged that she had not been completely honest with the officers because she was trying to protect him from getting into trouble. And that decision ended up changing everything. >> [clears throat] >> What makes this case especially difficult is that she appeared to believe she was doing the right thing. She was worried about his reputation, his business, and the consequences he might face. She even told officers that she cared about him and [clears throat] did not want to see him arrested. But, protecting someone does not always mean covering for them. When emotions take over, people can convince themselves that hiding part of the truth is harmless. They may believe they are protecting a relationship, protecting someone's future, or simply preventing a bad situation from becoming worse. But, once law enforcement becomes involved, inconsistent stories can make an already complicated situation even harder to understand. The officers were not there to decide who was the better person in the relationship. Their job was to determine what happened, identify the primary aggressor, document the evidence, and make an arrest when the circumstances required it. And in this case, the evidence and statements ultimately led them to believe that the woman was the primary aggressor. That meant her intentions, however complicated they may have been, could not erase the actions that had already taken place. There is also another important lesson here. Being hurt, angry, intoxicated, frightened, or emotionally overwhelmed does not automatically give someone the right to retaliate physically. Once a confrontation becomes physical, every action can have consequences, especially when the story being told afterward does not match what the officers observe or what witnesses report. The woman eventually realized that trying to protect someone else had left her facing consequences herself. She became extremely emotional, repeatedly saying that she wanted to go home, and that she regretted not listening to her mother. She was later taken to the hospital after her panic attack persisted and was medically cleared. She was then charged with battery. Perhaps the most important takeaway from this entire encounter is simple. Sometimes the truth you were afraid to tell in the beginning becomes much harder to explain later. If you are ever involved in a situation like this, trying to control the story or protect someone by hiding important details can create even more problems. The truth may be uncomfortable, but changing your story can make the situation far more difficult for everyone involved. This case also raises an important question about relationships. How far should someone go to protect the person they care about? And at what point does protecting someone else mean putting yourself at risk? The officers ultimately had to make a decision based on the information and evidence available to them, not on promises, emotions, or personal relationships. Whether you agree with the arrest or believe there was more to the story, one thing is clear. This situation could have ended very differently if the people involved had walked away before things became physical. What do you think? Did the officers make the right decision based on what they knew? Or do you believe there was more to this situation than [clears throat] what we saw? Share your thoughts in the comments. And remember, real-life encounters like this can escalate in seconds. What begins as an argument can quickly become an arrest, a hospital visit, and consequences that follow someone long after the camera stopped recording.
