Hello. >> Hi. How are you? >> Good. >> Is everything okay? >> Yeah. >> This is Carla Garcia and she was at this door because police had been called about a noise complaint at her apartment. At first, it looked like a normal call. Officers asked whether everyone inside was okay, listened to the people at the door, and prepared to move on. But months later, investigators would connect this visit to the case of 11-year-old Jacqueline Mimi Torres Garcia. The officers did not know it then. No public missing person report had brought them here. They were simply responding to a complaint from a neighbor. >> Hello. >> Hi. How are you? Good. >> Is everything okay? >> Yeah. >> We got to call. There's a lot of noise coming from your apartment. >> They're always calm. >> Okay. >> Everything's good, though. >> Everyone's all right? >> Yes. >> Is anyone else home with you? >> Just the baby's and my um boyfriend. >> Okay. Is your boyfriend here? >> Yeah. >> Can I speak with him? >> Yeah. Babe, babe, >> they just want to make sure everything's okay. you [snorts] okay? >> Yeah, I'm just pregnant. Just moves, you know. [laughter] >> All right. >> Hello. >> He's fine. >> Oh, okay. Mind if I come in some heat up? >> Huh? >> You mind if I come in some heat up? >> Hey, how's it going? >> Good. We just got to call and stuff like that. Everyone's okay? >> Yeah. Um, my wife's pregnant, so she just be having moon swings and >> I'll be trying to calm her down. >> Okay. Things happen. >> I'm at the end, so >> Okay. >> It's difficult. >> All right. Well, I haven't met you guys. Quick, I'm just going to write your names down, say hello with you, and get out of your hair. Okay. >> Okay. >> Hi. >> Say hi. >> Everything's okay. >> It's okay. How old are you? >> Say three. >> Three. >> Two. One [laughter] more. There you go. Okay. All right. What's your name? >> Carla. Go to K. >> K. >> Ra. >> And what's your last name? >> Mercia. >> And your birthday, Carla? >> 6196. >> And sir, what's your name? >> Jonathan. >> J O. >> J O N is what I mean. Uh J O N A T A N. >> And Jonathan, what's your last name? >> Nanita. N A N I A and your birthday. >> Uh 9295. >> Okay. How long you guys been staying here? >> Um >> how much was a year? >> Things are good. >> Yeah. >> Sometimes the walls are, you know, you live in apartments, walls are >> never been complained since we first moved here. So >> Okay. It's not the first thing we're moving. >> Okay. >> We're actually moving. >> Oh, for real? >> Yeah. Because of that. >> Yeah. Yeah, I mean unfortunately sometimes with apartments you really can't choose your neighbors, right? So if someone is living one way, someone lives another way and sometimes it just clashes. So [snorts] just give me a minute. Okay, >> hang on quick. >> Officers had been sent to a residence in Farmington, Connecticut after a noise complaint. Calls like this happen every day. Officers arrive, speak to the people involved, make sure no one is in immediate danger, and decide whether anything further needs to be done. The officers at this apartment followed that familiar routine. >> First one, last name, Garcia, common spelling, first name Carla, K A R L A >> 6196. >> Last name, Nanita, NATA. First name Jonathan. Come spelling. >> Is this your Is this your >> 929? I have a son. >> He's on one. >> Oh, he just turned SW. Sorry. >> Keep you guys busy. >> Oh, yeah. >> You guys got place your going too? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> It's better. Well, we came from the brand. It's better over there because we don't have no complaints at all. Yeah, it's a little bit different area. People are a little less likely to want to call for some noise and stuff like that. >> Have a good night. We're out of here. >> You guys have a good new year. >> Sorry. I'm sorry. No problem at all. Happy holidays. >> I'll say you guys you guys. All right. >> See you as well. Don't worry about it. It's all good. >> Take care. At the time, there was no public alert saying an 11-year-old girl was missing. There was no public search underway. There was no known reason for the officers to arrive expecting a child welfare emergency. That matters because months later, records and police allegations would give this ordinary call a completely different meaning. According to report, Mimi had already died months before this body cam footage was recorded. The people responding to officers at the door did not tell them that and the officers had no reported missing child case that would have told them to look for her. It is easy to ask why officers did not know more. But that question has to be answered carefully. Police are usually responding to the information they are given at the time. In this case, the central question is not why officers failed to solve a case during a noise call. It is how Mimi's absence could remain hidden for so long. >> What's your name again? >> Carla Rosie Garcia. >> It's Garcia. >> I just wanted to talk to you quickly because I hear from Barcelona. They call me JV. >> You've been here for a minute. I know. >> I've been here for a minute. Um >> I was You're good. I wasn't out there. So, um I hear that it was kind of like a hostile situation and maybe you wanted to get out of there to a safer place. Does that sound right? All right. As of right now, you are not under arrest. We brought you here to get you out of that dangerous situation and bring you somewhere safe. >> I'm not safe. >> Well, I'm saying right now you are, >> but if I leave here, I'm not safe. >> Right. I understand what you're saying, but you're not under arrest. >> And I don't want to go because I'm not going to be safe. >> Okay. You don't have to leave here, but I want to make you aware that you're not under arrest. >> I know I'm not under arrest because I didn't do nothing. >> Okay. I just want to make it clear. >> I'm being honest with you. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Cuz if I did, I would tell you. I really don't care. here. I'm ready for anything. >> We would like to talk to you and >> I'm ready to talk. >> Okay, good. So, just uh hold down for like 2 seconds, then we're going to get you right out of the box. >> But you better go get them. >> Okay, you're going. Okay. And then we'll figure it out. >> Yeah, I will. Because if them come with me with guns again. >> Yeah. >> I have kids. >> Yeah, we're going to we're going to We'd like you to bring >> Listen, where I dropped my kids off >> Uhhuh. >> That's where they went. >> Okay. If something happens to my kids, I'm going to really have a like anxiety attack. >> Where's your kids now? >> That's where they all are. >> That's the att >> I just put it out over the air to have someone go check. >> Okay. How many kids are over there? >> Five. >> Five kids. >> I have five kids. >> Five kids. All ages. How's the oldest? Who's the oldest? >> 12. The oldest >> cuz Nina is 11, I think. >> Who's Who's 12? >> Jackie. Jacquellyn Mimi Torres Garcia was 11 years old. Investigators believe Mimi died sometime in the fall of 2024. The circumstances surrounding her death later became part of a homicide investigation after her remains were discovered the following year. On October 8th, 2025, Mimi's remains were found in New Britain, Connecticut. >> We got a lot going on. We're going to talk to you. All right. >> Impressed. >> I'm sorry to hear everything that you got a lot going on. I'm sorry. I don't want to be after my kids for >> Of course. >> Of course. Well, cuz we want to get you somebody down here for support. >> I need to talk to I need my sister. >> Who? What's her name? >> Jacine. >> Jacine? What? >> I'm her sponsor. >> What's her last name? >> Everything up. >> Okay. Carla Garcia was charged with offenses including with special circumstances, conspiracy to commit with special circumstances, unlawful restraint, risk of injury to a child, tampering with physical evidence, intentional to a child under 19, and an alleged violation involving the disposal of Jonathan Nita faces related and kidnapping related charges among others. In March 2026, a superior court judge found probable cause for the case to move forward and Anita entered a not-uilty plea. Jacqueline Garcia has also pleaded not guilty. Reporting described charges including firstdegree unlawful restraint, risk of injury to a child, and intentional cruelty to a person under 19. The criminal proceedings are ongoing, and all three defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. But the most important part of this case isn't the body cam footage or the headlines. It's the question the case leaves behind. When a child disappears from ordinary life, who notices and how quickly?
