Stand up. >> On September 21st, 2023, airport officers responded to a service call regarding a fight at a restaurant. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the suspect had vandalized multiple businesses, spat on an individual, and struck an elderly woman with a closed fist resulting in a minor laceration. >> This airport disturbance starts with what sounds like a routine service call, but officers quickly discover this is much bigger than a simple argument. Witnesses are describing an elderly woman being struck, another person being spit on, multiple people being hit, and property being knocked over inside the terminal. And the suspect is still somewhere inside the airport. What happens next is a tense search, a difficult arrest, and a series of escalating confrontations that officers have to control in a very public place. Watch closely because the situation changes dramatically once they finally locate her. >> Oh. >> Uh this guy really explained what was going on. >> Excuse us. >> I was just walking up and you hear this loud bang, and I guess a younger woman hit this elderly woman in the face with a phone. >> With a phone? >> Yeah, hit her and the elderly woman's cut. She's bleeding on the side of her face. Then the woman went and spit in somebody else's face, and then a bunch of us were trying to contain her. >> So this >> She went back down in the terminal thing. >> The individual hit two people? >> Hit one person, spit in another one's face. >> Hit one, spit in the other. >> Okay. >> And they've been uh >> Okay. If um okay. >> So there's the elderly woman >> All right. Hey, hey, what's going on? >> Hi. >> Hi. >> She's crazy. I mean, she has like all >> The lady was assaulted. >> And both of them were She spit on her and then knocked her with a cell phone. >> Hey, can I have your >> Okay, Gabriel. >> Can you spell it? >> N i n e t e e n e i g h t e e n e. >> Of course she was like in the way, but you can turn this up. She's screaming and yelling at her right here. >> She did take the face of her cell phone, and that's what hit her. >> That's what hit her, but it's you were in the way. Look at that. >> Oh, sorry. >> Um so, right here is when she walks up to her and hits her. That's where she hits her, and then she comes and throws No, she like hit She punched her with her with her hand. >> Raised her hand. >> No, yeah. If you slow it down >> glasses >> Charlie, okay. >> And then did she look like she was trying to find somewhere to hide because we were all like pondering it. She could have gone past us and gone downstairs, but >> Okay. At this point, officers are doing something extremely important. They are building the timeline from multiple witnesses instead of relying on a single account. We hear descriptions of the elderly woman being struck, the alleged spitting incident, and other physical confrontations. Then witnesses begin pointing out exactly where the assault happened on video. That footage can become critical because it gives investigators something objective to compare against the statements. Notice how everyone is trying to reconstruct the same few seconds from different angles. Do you think eyewitness accounts alone would have been enough here, or does having the video make the difference? >> Is that video something you're able to possibly send to us? >> Of course. This is her, and then this is where She's got glasses on. And then you can see where she spits on this lady right here in the pink. And you can't tell right here This is cuz she was kind of in the way, but this is where she hits her. Right here. He's in her And then right here, that's where she hit her. And then she's bleeding on the corner >> So >> Yeah, this is exactly where she So yeah, how long is the video? Can you get Can you pull that video up? >> Yeah. >> And let me see if I can grab it. That's the beginning. >> I'm here. I'm in the site. >> Your own mama getting hit, you know, it's like it makes >> Yeah. >> I would have I would have gone after her, but I was too scared she was going to >> I thought she was coming towards me when she saw my phone. >> She definitely didn't go out the exit. No, we would have seen her. >> Okay, that's it. >> Yeah, and she's she's definitely down that way. >> So the um the couple uh screenshots, can you grab a couple of them? >> Is some Does someone have the ability to let our flight know that we're like late now? >> We'll get you there. We're not We're not going to hold you here. In fact, you got a card? >> Yeah. Yeah, she's still down there. So somebody got to She is on some She would have said anybody who >> Okay, so here So that's Andrew.Brennan@ brennan@ >> Got you. >> financial. Got it. >> Got it. Thank you so much. >> Okay. Thank you. >> [music] >> Want to go look? >> Yeah. >> We're going to go look. What direction? Where? Okay. Did you just have somebody come through and knock all this off? >> Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We have a picture. >> Was it a woman? >> I'm sorry. I'm nosy. I'm black. I'm trying to see. >> Was it a woman? >> Yes. [laughter] >> I just need to see a picture of what she >> Disco. girl. >> Thank you. Control 18, she just knocked a bunch of stuff off at Air Essentials too. I'm still trying to make contact. >> After a 10 minute search, officers located her seated in the waiting area near one of the gates. Before approaching her, officers consulted with the victims to determine if they wish to press charges. When the victims declined, the officers proceeded to take her into custody on a disorderly conduct charge. >> Give me a go ahead to take her for disorderly. All right, I'll take her for disorderly. Hi ma'am, my name is Officer Lane with Airport Police. I'm going to go ahead and stand up. Stand up, please. Ma'am. Stand up, put your hands behind your back. Stand up. >> Do not resist. >> Roll over. >> Resist. Okay. Don't make this any worse than you've already made it. Okay. Come on. Do not resist. >> Ma'am. >> Put your hands behind your back. Do it now. Put your hands behind your back. Do it now. Hands behind your back. >> Now. Give me your hands. >> Officer Lane, do we have her in the store or is she in >> Put your hands behind your back. Do not resist. Do not resist. Okay. Do not resist. Okay. Thank you. Very good. Stop. >> Stop resisting. >> Okay. >> You're making this more difficult on yourself. Roll over on your stomach. >> Do it now. Put your hand behind your back. Do it now. Okay. Do not resist. Do not resist. You're being placed under arrest by this officer for disorderly conduct. Do you understand? >> I'll stand up. All right, you want me to bring my car over here? >> Uh we may need that. >> Yeah. >> Stand up. We're going to set you in this chair, okay? >> All right, come on. Okay. Okay. Fine. >> You can hang out there. That's fine. >> She wants to do that. That's That's her thing, okay? It's an additional charge. >> Mhm. >> Who's this singing officer? How you want to sit up in the chair? Let's get you sit up in the chair. Come on, stand up. Okay. Okay. All right. >> Sit me Give me the chair. Put me in the [ __ ] chair, [ __ ] >> Yeah, I understand that. I understand that, okay? Now you can relax. >> Who Who's not relaxing? >> Okay? There's no need for pulling away. There's no need for language. >> away? >> Okay? >> You are. >> I'm not playing games here. >> I can sit in the car if I want to. >> You can sit right here, just like that. >> Put your feet on the ground. >> Okay. You want me to sit like this? >> If that's what you want to do. Calm down. >> Now the investigation has turned into an arrest, and this is where the situation becomes much more physical. The officer repeatedly gives commands to stand, place her hands behind her back, and stop resisting. From the transcript, she is not immediately complying, so officers have to transition from verbal commands to physical control. The important thing to watch here is the sequence. Commands are being issued. The officer explains what he wants, and then the level of force increases as resistance continues. Once handcuffs are being applied, every movement matters. What do you think? Was the officer giving enough opportunity to comply before escalating the physical control? >> I can walk if I want What are y'all waiting for? >> A vehicle, since you don't want to walk. >> I can sit in the car if I want >> Where's your wallet at, ma'am? >> Okay. >> Where's your wallet, man? >> I don't have a wallet. >> Okay. >> Where's your wallet, yeah? >> I don't have a wallet. >> Okay. I can get it at the >> I magically appeared. Yeah. >> That one? >> Yeah. Thank you. Magically appeared in the airport. >> Okay. >> Let's go. >> I'll get you a wheelchair. Get you a wheelchair. Okay. >> You stand up and walk. >> Yeah. >> Get a chair. Get a chair. You don't need to do that. We're going to put you in a chair then. >> Come on. >> No, you don't want to walk. You're going to get a chair. >> No, you don't want to walk. You're going to get a chair. I'll get you a ride. >> You're going to walk now? >> No, I want to ride. >> Y'all going to show for me? >> Okay. I want to ride. >> It's no charge. >> Hurry up. Where we going? Quick. Let's go. I'm walking that way. What do you think? Y'all see this stuff? Making worse of it. The mayor The mayor Come on, push me out. >> Stop resisting. >> Come on, push me out. That's right. That's right. That's right. >> Stop resisting. >> Disorderly conduct. >> She's good. >> She's She's not going to have that. >> Okay, push me out. >> That would be very unwise. >> Additional charge, resisting stop hall frisk. Lead the way. >> Spitting. Second count. >> Disorderly. >> I'm going this way. >> Wow. >> The arrest is clearly not over just because the handcuffs are on. The officer still have to move her safely through a busy airport, prevent further resistance, and get her into the patrol vehicle. And now another allegation becomes part of the encounter, spitting. That matters because the officers are dealing with someone who has already been accused of physical aggression and is continuing to resist movement. Notice the repeated attempts to direct her toward the vehicle instead of simply rushing the process. In a crowded terminal, controlling the scene while limiting unnecessary escalation can be a difficult balancing act. At this point, would you prioritize speed or would you slow everything down even more? >> All right, we need to take the elevator. >> Okay, we'll go through a water bottle. >> We need to take the elevator. All right. We need to take the elevator. >> I can carry you. Can you carry it? >> She's spitting. >> Oh, okay. >> That's fine. Make your life easier. >> You're making everything less work, actually. >> Okay. Congratulations. >> You need me to push your brain in? >> You got it. >> So, we're going to arrest you for disorderly conduct. >> And resisting arrest, stop hall frisk. >> So, what does disorderly conduct mean? What does disorderly conduct mean? >> Well, you seem to know everything, so look it up. >> I don't know anything. >> Okay. >> It's funny. >> Try to have a conversation with you. You don't polite and be civil. >> have a real broke [ __ ] >> Okay. >> Yeah. You're entitled to your opinion. >> All right. What we're going to have you do is lean over the hood of this car. She's going to search you before you go in the patrol car. Do you have any questions? >> Yeah. >> I don't want to drag you. >> I don't want Can I have a guy to I don't want her to touch me. >> Do not resist. >> Can I have my purse and my phone? >> Stand up. >> If anybody has a problem with what we're doing, please >> Do not resist. >> Get searched on the ground. >> I'll take my glasses off. Hold on. Wait. Take my glasses off. >> Do not resist. I'm searching your person. >> I don't want to break those. Those are $400. >> Okay. Well, don't resist. Don't damage your glasses. >> Y'all damage them anyway. >> I'm going to roll you over. Get you up. Okay. Do not resist. Do not resist. Okay. We're going to help you sit up. We're going to put you in the car. Yeah. We're going to put them right on you as soon as he gets in the car. Do not drag your feet. Walk to the car. Turn around. Okay. But >> I don't wait. I I need my glasses. >> We're going to get you your glasses. >> Put them in the patrol car. Put them on, baby. >> Nope. We're not. We're getting in your car. >> We don't want to damage your glasses by your actions. I don't damage my glasses. >> Okay. Good. >> Thank you. Now, can I have my glasses? >> Sit back. >> Let me get them. >> No. Sit back. Feet on the floor. Do not resist. Sit up. >> Sit straight up. >> Do not Do not resist. Can I have my purse and my phone? >> I need my glasses. Come on with the >> Sit up straight. Sit up straight. >> No, I don't want my hair. Ooh, my bad. >> You got to go. >> Up. >> No. There you go. Sit up straight. Watch the Thanks, Hannah. Good job, buddy. Appreciate you. >> I'll ride with you. >> Okay. Appreciate you. Wait. Did you get her handcuffs? >> Hey. >> You good to go? >> Is everything okay? >> YEAH. >> OH, Y'ALL MUST really like me. >> Hey, wait. We were not able to drive around the car cuz the hobbles are in the front door. She What's up with her handcuffs? Oh, I was trying to be nice to you. Stop resisting. No one's resisting. No one's resisting. >> You guys just like to >> Do you have the door cracked open? I'm just going to drag her through like I did before. >> And this is where the arrest takes another turn. Officers are now dealing with a person who is difficult to move into the vehicle, and the transcript indicates the handcuffs have shifted or slipped during the struggle. That creates a practical safety problem. Officers need to maintain control while also preventing the situation from becoming unnecessarily dangerous. You can hear the officer repeatedly telling her to stop resisting and explaining what will happen next. This is also a reminder that an arrest is not always a simple walk from point A to point B. Even after someone is restrained, officers still have to manage movement, equipment, positioning, and the subject's behavior all at once. >> Okay, so if I take out this hobble so you can walk, are you going to walk for me? >> Yeah, I'm not going >> I'm going to unbuckle you here. >> Huh? >> I was just saying I'm going to unbuckle you. >> So, after the initial airport disturbance, officers gathered witness accounts and reviewed video showing the alleged assault and spitting incidents. After locating the woman, they attempted to take her into custody, but the arrest became increasingly difficult as she resisted commands and resisted being moved toward the patrol vehicle. The transcript ultimately states that she was charged with elder abuse, assaulting a first responder, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and vandalism. The bigger takeaway is how quickly a disturbance in a crowded public place can escalate when multiple alleged offenses, conflicting behavior, and resistance become part of the same encounter.
