And you dragged one of our deputies. >> He made me feel unsafe, so I ran. >> Turn the car off for me. >> In Palm Coast, a routine traffic stop quickly turned dangerous when deputies confronted the driver of a stolen vehicle in a fast food drive-thru. The 17-year-old suspect, McKenzie Nation, dragged deputies, struck a patrol car, and fled both by car and on foot before being caught. Turn it off. >> Turn the car off for me. >> Turn it off. >> You turn the car off for me. >> Turn the car off for me. Turn the car. He's on foot toward McDonald's. On foot toward McDonald's. He bailed on the vehicle. He's running in >> on the ground. Ground. Ground. Do not move. >> What a gunpoint. We can't find that. Turn your wrist. The way he tried to escape was unbelievable. He struck the commander with his car while fleeing from officers after creating all this chaos. The reason he later gave the police for running was absolutely insane. >> You got him. >> Yes. Okay. Stand him up. Check him first real quick. Anybody gloves on him? >> Yeah, gloves. >> You got them? >> Yeah. >> I don't have anything on me. >> Oh, we'll find out. I'm sure >> second's good. >> That looks like his phone right there, too. >> Give him his foot. >> Your butt. And check his hair, too. >> You good, boy? [Music] >> Yeah. I got the door open. >> What's your name, bro? What? You got your ID on? No. And he dragged me. How old are you? 17. What are you doing, bro? What do you mean? What? >> What are you doing? I >> just left a friend house. I'm going home. >> Oh, you're under arrest now, bud. All right. >> Huh? >> Can I have my We'll figure all that out. Let's just get him in a car. >> My slide's right there. >> We can put them in my car. >> My car is right here. >> They're probably in the car. Do >> you guys have my phone? >> Yeah. Phone? What? Sir, what did I do? Well, if you didn't do nothing while you're running, >> go ahead and take a seat there. >> He has no right to go through my phone. >> You can touch the three for now. >> He has no right to go through my phone. >> Man, you don't even know anything right now, man. I mean, why would you do that? You're 17. >> Why would I do what, man? >> You just ran on us, man. And you dragged one of our deputies. >> He made me feel unsafe, so I ran. They approached me. I felt unsafe, so I ran. >> All right, man. If you're giving me the wrong name, that's another charge. >> Glad I gave you the wrong name. >> You already ran, man. What? Why would I believe it, man? I'm just giving you an opportunity before I run it. >> He told officers he ran because he felt unsafe, which is ridiculous. If you commit a crime, of course, you'll feel unsafe. Later, he just kept saying, "Call my mother." >> Felt unsafe. You know what I mean? Can you tell me what's going on there? Why did they approach you? Dispatch has been updated. >> Can you call my mom and let her number? >> Will you guys tell me what this is? Officer, may you inform my mom that I'm in you guys custody right now so she can get your handle and get me out soon as possible? >> Yeah, man. All that's going to get figured out. Probably would have been figured out a lot sooner if you didn't run from police. So, >> I don't know what's going on. Why are you guys chasing me in the first place? >> Well, if you don't know why, why are you running? >> Cuz I felt frightened. I just told you that. >> He came to me and pointed his gun. I thought I was going to dispatch that the same way all the other officers approach you. >> You want to meandize him? Sorry. >> Not Not yet. Like, we just got everything out. He's He won't talk. >> We got his back, too. >> Hey, are you okay? Are you hurt or anything like that? >> I'm not hurt. Can you guys call my mother, though? >> Yeah, we'll get to that point in just a second. Okay. Is it against my will for you guys to be holding me as a minor without calling? >> No, you're under arrest. Okay. >> All right. I'm under arrest, but can you please let my parents know? >> We going to We are going to Yes. >> Thank you. >> We are going to Listen, McKenzie. I'm Deputy Quintter. Okay. >> Yes. Can you tell me what's going on? >> You made me feel very frightened when you came to me holding your gun, sir. That's why I ran from you. >> I didn't have my gun out. >> No, you had your gun like your hand on your gun and I was very frightened cuz black young men are dying. >> Listen, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say may use evidence against you. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her with you at any time during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. If at any time you wish to stop talking or have an attorney present, all question will be stopped at your request. Do you understand these rights? >> Yes, I do. >> With these rights in mind, are you willing to talk to them? >> No, I'm not. >> All right. You're under arrest. Okay. >> What else do you need from me? Cuz >> as soon as the hit comes back, we're going to see if they want us to process it. And if we're processing it, we're going to go through it. Um and then we'll go from there. But as soon as we find out, I'm gonna put him in my car and I'm gonna go and then we'll go from there. >> Okay. I can do the first. >> All right. And we did we just sent it for hits and all that. >> Yeah. >> Do I have the right to ask where are we going right now? >> You're going to go to the Flagler inmate facility. Okay. You've got grand theft of a motor vehicle, petty theft, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and possibly aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with your vehicle when you struck the commander's vehicle over there. >> Yeah, that was hard. Well, the commander struck me, sir, cuz I was running in fear for my life. >> So, if the police So, you can't flee from us. Okay. >> Can you tell it to my lawyer, sir? I'm ready. I'm ready to go, sir. >> Well, we're not leaving just yet. Okay. We're still waiting on some more information. >> You want me to call her beforehand? >> No, we're going to have a unit go there. I don't want to We're not going to have my caller cuz then that's going to cause a mess. >> So, what they said here on >> They haven't came back yet. I'm going to be on teletype. So, if they're on primary checking us, just let me know. But we're just going to do an inventory right now. >> Run the uh run that plate and see what it >> Oh, yeah. >> Actually, I mean, we have PC cuz it reeks like weed and you know, he didn't say he had a card or anything like that. Honestly, man, nowadays probably >> has like this. >> Maybe. And then he took that side [Music] door open. It was like >> nothing in here. >> I mean, he had Can you >> open that? >> He said that he ran because he was afraid that we came up with our guns drawn. And I I was like, "My gun wasn't drawn." He's like, "It was on your hand was on it." Like, "Yeah, when I approached the car like that, my hand wasn't on my gun." >> Yeah. You saw the roach here. That's all it is. >> Yeah. All right. Do >> you have anything on you that's a poke, stick, or hurt anybody? >> No, I'm not a criminal. I'm not trying to poke anyone or anyone. Spread your feet. >> I play football, bro. You guys beat me. >> I was frightened, bro. You know how much black boys that look like me are dying out here? >> All we did was ask you to turn the car off and you decided to take off. >> So, you had to hold your gun and tell me turn the car off, sir. >> You know, right? >> Yes, sir. I know it was. >> Listen, my hand being on my gun doesn't mean anything. >> I don't know. Why should I have to turn off the car? >> Can you check that side? >> Yeah. Just >> Oh man, I thought we did this already. You take my cell phone so quick. We have holes in my >> They'll take them off when you get to jail. Again, if you take anything into the jail, it's another felony charge that you're going to get. >> I don't have anything. Search all through my hair. Make sure there's nothing. >> Have a seat. >> This is the moment you've been waiting for. Deputies finally called his mother. That's when things got darker and her reaction was pure shock just like any mother would feel. >> Hello. >> Yes. This is Deputy Quintter Flower County Sheriff's Office. You are Mackenzie's mom. >> Okay. So, what's going on with him? What's the charger? >> Okay. So, a little You're his mother, correct? >> Yes, I'm his mom. >> Okay. We got alerted reference a stolen license plate. Upon making contact with the vehicle, obviously, we didn't know who he was at the time. He was in the driver's seat. We asked him, "Hey, can you turn off the car and we need to speak with you while doing so?" He refused to and then proceeded to drive off in a high rate of speed. Deliberately crashed into one of our commander vehicles and then continued to take continued to take off onto the highway at a high rate of speed and went up on two wheels of his vehicle and was able to get it back down and proceeded to to take off again. He then drove into a shopping plaza, jumped out of the vehicle, and took off on foot. Ultimately, he was secured. No injuries, nothing like that. He wasn't tased. He wasn't anything. He he g he he complied and we we secured him. After further investigating, the vehicle that he was driving is also reported stolen. >> Oh, lord. >> And and then >> what's been charging? Well, I'm still So, while we when we got that figured out, there was a there was another tag in the vehicle that was stolen as well. So, as of right now, he's facing a couple of things. One, obviously, it's the it's the grand theft of the vehicle. Obviously, in possession of the stolen vehicle. >> Mhm. >> He's got two possession charges of the uh for the grand theft of the uh or the petty theft of the license plates. He's got resisting arrest. He's got fleeing and eluding. And then he's going to have aggraggated assault on law enforcement for ramming into the vehicle. >> Okay, sir. >> Right now, I know this is a lot to take in. And again, I I I hate to be doing this over the phone. Obviously, you're just you're not in this county, so it's not like we could come talk to you, but as of right now, we are at the Flagger County inmate facility. I'm still working on the reports. Right now, what I do, because he's 17 and still a juvenile, what happens is once we're done with the report itself, we send it to DJJ, which is the Department of Juvenile Justice. Once they receive it, they're going to look it over and he's either going to meet the criteria to go straight to DJJ and be held there or he'll be released to a parent pending his court date. I won't know for sure. Yeah, I won't know for sure >> until I'm done with the report. >> Don't you think they'll release him tonight? >> Honestly, ma'am, with the charges that he has, I don't think they're going to release him. I think he's going to go to DJJ, which is in Daytona, but again, I could be wrong. >> Okay. Um, just me and you going to tell me I can't get so I can call you back. I can know all the talking and everything and I can know where he's located and everything like that. Will he get Will he be able to give me a call? >> He should. Yeah. So, he should be getting booked in right now and all that. What I'm going to do is give you the our dispatch's phone number. If you have if you need to call us and reach out to me, that's the number you would call. So, whenever you're ready, I can give you that number. >> I'm ready now. >> Okay. >> All right. Yes, ma'am. Bye. Deputies say this case shows how quickly a traffic stop can turn violent. McKenzie Nasian now faces grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting officer with violence, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, pettit theft, driving while licensed suspended with knowledge, criminal mischief, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. The 17-year-old was booked into the county jail and turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
