I'm shot. I'm shot. I'm shot. Help. >> What did I do? >> Keep your hands Keep your hands back. >> Can we figure this out? Hey. 127, I got one running. >> An officer gets out of his car to ask a man a few questions. Seconds later, he's calling for help and tightening a tourniquet around his own leg. But, here's what makes this one different. The man he walked up to wasn't a stranger, and he wasn't finished. The next 4 hours turn one shooting into a citywide manhunt. I'm your host, Tony, and welcome back to Body Cam Edge. >> I'm shot. >> Are you shot? >> Yeah, I'm shot. >> Get him in the car. Get him in the car. >> Which one? >> Mark, get in the back. A short black male? >> I think it's him with the jacket. >> I'm I'm looking he's he's trying to get Show me the guy who he is. >> Let me see where he came from. >> All right. Yeah. Try to zoom in on that guy again. All right. Save that video there for me, all right? Yeah, it's it's a black male, black beanie cap, black jeans. He's got it in there. He's got it in there. >> Who's that? >> The the store owner. The guy. He went south. He just went south on Lake. That's the guy. He just went south on It's Because you see You see the >> 101, I can direct them where they need to go. >> Go! >> Woah, now! >> Three. >> Four. >> 141. >> 141 in here. >> Joey's found. >> Listen to how carefully they're moving now. This isn't routine caution. Somewhere inside this perimeter is a man who just shot a police officer and is still armed, which means every doorway, every backyard, every blind corner is a place this could happen again. >> Come with me. >> Just give me a 2 seconds to coordinate. >> 35, it looks like there's a drone up in the air above police department. >> We good? >> Yeah, you Miller me? Let's just try not to all be in the same spot. >> All right, so I got to obviously be sure of this. He already shot at the point. So we'll do like if you go around a building, let's get like an L, right? So we're going to have a couple guys wait. Couple guys go in and if you guys we have an L, we don't need to all be ducks in a row, right? >> And we kind of like the Genesis shooting. >> And then somebody in the back call out where we're at. >> Yeah, so I got the >> know who's what. >> I got the call out. >> Yeah, you guys take the call out, stay in the back. >> All right. >> Let me get me, Miller, and Slathrow. Uh and then kind of as you guys fill in as we need it, all right? >> Okay. >> You want to push on that a whole all the way around? >> And that for eating car that I just sent for the Southland light, can you actually take one of those spots after I leave the park? >> Clear. >> Hey, my best bet is get close to the one D's and maybe maybe, but we're just just like I was just dude, just like I was telling him we can't let anybody into this area. We had an officer. >> So, yeah. Yeah, we're serious. >> I don't care. You got to go. Can't come through this way. >> I know. You ready? >> Hands up, guys. Keep your hands up. Walk up on the sidewalk. Just keep your hands up for us. Up on the sidewalk, keep your hands up. Okay. Up over here. Over here. Uh keep your hands up where I can see them. Both you two right now. Give his other hand out. >> Jerry, you got the other guy? >> Yeah, we're securing this guy. >> Get the other guy. >> Give me your hands. >> No, no, I didn't do anything. Bro, I didn't even run. Hold this guy. >> Sir, bro, I was just talking to you. >> Yeah. >> Bro, I was Bro. >> And this is the part that gets lost in a night like this. The man they chased down, put on the ground, and searched had nothing to do with the shooting. In a manhunt this raw, anyone moving the wrong way becomes the suspect. The real one was nowhere near here. >> Guys, hold your spots. >> I don't have nothing Bro, I love my grandma's. I don't want to go to my mom's house. >> Roll up on your side real quick. >> I literally was just Sir, I was just talking to you. I was literally just talking to you. >> Do you have any weapons on you? >> No, I don't have nothing. It's only my phone. I just came from I literally just came from my mom's >> All right, I'm going I'm going to stand I'm going to stand you up. >> Oh yeah, my phone. No. >> We're going to get him. >> You can take me, bro. I don't have nothing on I just want >> I got one of your suspects. >> I didn't do it. >> We have one young adult running. >> I didn't know this was happening, bro. >> Hold your spots. >> I didn't know this was happening, bro. >> Don't let your partner go anywhere else. >> Why did he run? >> No one in. >> Yes, but he ran. >> Why did he run? >> I don't know why he ran. That's my older >> Cuz I don't know why he ran. I just came from my I literally just came from my mom's from my grandma's house and I wanted to go to my mom's house. That's all. >> 405 >> I can't breathe. Thank you. >> Yeah, we have We have one detained. So, everybody hold your positions. We got SWAT coming in to do yard to yards with this individual and inform her. Hold your positions. We're going to get him. >> My leg My leg My leg My leg My leg My leg >> I had a gun in it. We have two in custody. >> It's not a gun. >> Clear your slots. >> We had taser, maybe. >> No one in. No one in each squad car. >> My leg My leg My leg My >> Somebody in that side? >> Officer, can somebody get off my my left leg? I don't got nothing, bro. >> [snorts] >> All right, let's stand him up. >> 67 >> Get another check of him. >> Once he came out of the car >> I'm going to clear the other's property. Spread your feet wide. Have you searched the entire time now? >> All right. >> I'm not I didn't I I didn't run. >> Officer, hey hey man, talk to me. Are you injured at all? >> Bro, he just stepped Bro, he just stomped on my neck, bro. I'm I'm fine, bro, but that was mad crazy. He told me to get on the ground. I was on the ground and he jumped on my neck still. >> Do you feel like you need an ambulance? >> No, I do not feel like I need I just want to go home. I don't have As you can see, I don't have any weapons on me. I don't have anything on me. >> You got a car nearby? All right. >> What this footage never shows you is how the night actually ended. For nearly 4 hours, the search stayed exactly where you left it. Teams holding a perimeter, the wrong men briefly in handcuffs, and the entire time, the man they were looking for was dug into a pile of brush and debris behind a building on Lake Avenue, not far from where it started. Around 5:00 in the morning, a police drone picked up his heat signature in that brush. When the spotlight hit him, he shot himself. No officer ever fired a weapon that night. His name was Sheteek Cato, 34. He had two prior violent felony convictions, second-degree assault tied to a 2010 shooting, and criminal possession of a weapon from a shots-fired incident in 2018. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, plus 5 years of supervision, released in January of 2023. Months later, he damaged his state GPS monitor, and picked up charges for criminal mischief and obstruction. That conviction got him 40 hours of community service. The officer he shot had been on the job for just over a year. His family credited his training with helping save his life. He walked out of the hospital the next day, and is recovering at home. Here's what's hard to shake about this one. Every careful step those officers took, the formations, the slow building searches, the streets blocked for blocks, was built around a man who in the end was never going to let himself be found. Where do you think the line should have been and would it have changed anything? Let me know below. Is this the kind of case that stays with you? Subscribe. There's more like it.
