On May 6th, 2021, deputies in Valuchia County joined a pursuit involving a suspect fleeing north on Interstate 95. After officers forced the vehicle off the roadway, the chase appeared to be over. It wasn't. >> Guys, give me your speed. >> Getting boxed in, usually into pursuit. For this suspect, it was only the beginning. >> We're about 105 110 trying to catch up. They're still a little ways away. It's pretty good traffic. Still south of that one's got it if you want to call it. 10 3 10 three. Someone just pit him into the woods. >> Uh the 252. Charlie reporting. Anybody got ice? Air1 does not have eyes on the suspect. >> All right, everybody, heads up. He's trying to drive the car out of the woods. >> All right, guys. We're going to get two shields. We're going to approach. Trying to rock the car back and forth so he's still inside. When they get a shield, let's pin him in. This guy, bro. Watch him. Draw to me. Coming out the driver. Watch carefully. This is the moment the entire situation changes. >> Y'all do not walk up on this car. We got enough people up here. >> That's the dog. >> And just like that, a pursuit that was already overbecame a much bigger problem. You want the traffic to stay put? >> Car one, give air one the air. Still northbound 95 half mile south of Dunlaw. Half mile south of Dunlaw. >> Lieutenant Shank, I need to know if there's any guns in that car that he just stole in the in the front. >> Still northbound on 95 passing Dunlaw. Traffic stopped on the on-ramp for Dun Law. Still no traffic. Northbound center lane. The channels are patched now with five. >> Which car is the Coco car? >> Coco SUV. Vehicle smoking north of 95 or north of Dun by about a half mile. Going into the inside lane. >> Being advised that's a SWAT officer's vehicle. >> Don't be in the same lane with him. You're going to lose debris all over the road. >> It's solid lane. He's starting to slow down. It's about uh 1/4 mile south of Williamson overpass 91. If you're not already, hurry up and get up here. Once the suspect was in custody, investigators began uncovering details that made this case even more unusual. Investigators later reported signs of drug use, sleep deprivation, and possible mental health issues. Cummings was ultimately charged with multiple felony offenses.
