All right, today is August 7th, 2023 at approximately 12:11 in the afternoon. My name is Detective Lozada, badge number 1531. Also, uh here in the interview is my partner, Detective Pappas, P number >> 1305. >> 1305. And we're here speaking with what station name, ma'am? >> Devon Michaels. >> Devon Michaels? >> Yes, sir. >> And we are here in reference to TR23-15229. And we're in my detective vehicle parked near So, uh yeah, I know like you said, the dispatcher already told you that um Jonathan, he was found he was found deceased this morning. Okay, so we we don't know what happened to him. Um that's why we want to talk to you. See, last cuz I know you were here last night. You guys are like trying to move out of the house and move back to your place across the town. Yeah. >> So, if you can kind of just go over the last time you saw him yesterday, uh your guys' conversation, anything that you think is important for us to know. Uh cuz as of right now, like I said, we we don't we don't know anything, you know? We just need to find out and start putting things together to figure out what happened. >> Uh we spent the whole day together yesterday. We did the girls' school shopping, uh clothes, supplies. Um we loaded up the truck and we took it to my house. Unloaded it, came back here, was loading more things up. Um That was it. We We just unloaded things. He ate, drank a little bit, smoked a little bit, but that was it. Like nothing abnormal. >> Okay. What time were you guys here last night? >> Off and on different times. Um I know like we left like at 9:00 I think. Got back I think at 10:00. Um and then um I know I left but I'm not sure what time. I was talking to Yoko so she would have an idea of what time I left. >> So last time you talked to Yoko was that after you talked to Yoko last night was when you left like right after that? >> Shortly after that. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Cuz she um was cleaning up and I was cleaning like the bottles and stuff like that up. >> Okay. And who was home at that time? >> Um John, myself, Yoko, and Yoshida. >> Okay. Um and then last night when you talked to Yoko you don't remember what time that was last night or was it this morning? >> It was like midnight, 1:00 I think. >> Okay. Um do you remember your conversation with her? >> Yes. >> What were you guys talking about? >> We were talking about John owing her money and she said he owes her uh like $200. Um we were talking about Andrea coming back. I know John's trying to get out before Andrea came back. Um and I left the keys for her for Andrea. >> When was she supposed to come? >> We don't know. John said it was going to be any day because she has to pick up the car before the 16th. So we know she's like supposed to be soon. >> Soon meaning within the sick between now and the 16th. So we don't know if she was coming today. >> No, sir. >> Nothing like that. >> He just didn't want to be here when she got back. So we were kind of rushing to get everything moved. The majority of his stuff is at my house right now. >> Okay. And then guys were moving stuff back and forth yesterday. Um to your place. What's your address? And then is that in Vegas? >> Yes. >> You know the zip? >> 89130 >> Okay. How do you spell your first name? >> D E V Y N >> Last name? >> Michaels Common spell. >> And your date of birth? Your social? Your phone number? Okay. Uh so you're moving stuff back and forth to um this house that >> This one. >> And then from there uh you think you came home came back here around maybe 10 10:00-ish. >> Mhm. >> Uh did you guys pack up more stuff? >> Yeah, I put more stuff in my truck and then I went grabbed my daughter's prescription and I went home. >> Okay. And then you put you said that John was drinking when you guys got back for the for the last time? >> Yes. >> So I guess go when you got back kind of explain what happened from there. So >> Um he started drinking and he started smoking. He smoked cigarettes and we He was in the garage. Yoko came down. They were kind of having a issue. Um she went back upstairs. Um and then she came back down later and that's when I was talking to her. >> And then he fell asleep? >> No, he was in the garage when I left. >> He was a Okay, cuz Yoko told us that you told her that he was asleep and >> No, I said I told him to sleep it off instead of trying to drive last night. >> So he when you left, he was still awake? >> Yes. >> And then what and what was he doing in the garage? >> Smoking. >> Uh smoking what? >> Um weed. >> Then then no one's in trouble for smoking weed or doing any any any bad drugs right now. We're just We're worried about trying to figure out what happened to Jonathan, okay? So don't leave anything out just cuz you think it might get somebody in trouble, okay? >> It was just weed. >> Okay. Does he do anything else that you know of? >> No, sir. I know he smokes cigarettes and weed. I know he has um drinking. Um he was drinking Jameson last night. Um I was cleaning everything up before I left. >> Okay. What about Does he do meth? >> No, I know he used to do drugs, but I don't think he does any of those things anymore. >> Cocaine? Heroin? >> Not anymore. >> No. But did he do any of that stuff? >> He did, but >> Um So he's in the garage. You said he's just smoking and then finished packing up your stuff and then you take off. >> Yeah. >> That's the last thing. You guys text each other or call each other? >> I've been texting him all morning cuz today was the first day of school and he was supposed to come down to help me get the girls registered. >> Did you When was the last time you talked to him last night over the phone? Like text or call? >> No. Um last time I talked to him was face-to-face. >> Okay, so you didn't text him when you got back to your place and hey he didn't try texting you nothing like that? >> him. Um, you can have my phone records. I texted him. Hey, this this was for this morning when I was up trying to get the stuff for the girls ready for school. And I was saying like I can't find anything. And then I've just been calling and texting and haven't heard anything. >> Okay. So, uh Do you know like if what he does for work? >> He's a handyman. So, he does odd jobs here and there. >> Like side jobs? >> Yeah. >> Does he have like a license to do that? He just People just call him and then he'll just do things like Mom said something about like the moving stuff. Does he move people, too? So, he just does any kind of odd end jobs? How long has he been doing that for? >> A few years. >> Does he have like a lot of clientele or is it just like word of mouth? >> Uh I think it's more word of mouth. I don't know his clientele. Um he says he puts ads up on Facebook and he tries to drive his trailer around a lot. Like yesterday when we went shopping, I wanted to go in my car, but he wanted to use the trailer for advertising. So that's >> know when's the last time he had a uh gig or job? >> Um But uh let's see. Friday. He did something on Friday. I don't know what he was moving. Somebody's stuff. >> That's the last job that you know he's done? >> Yes, sir. He texted me for it. I don't know who it was for, but he told me how much he made and everything. >> Okay. Do you know does he have any beefs with anybody? Does he owe anybody any money? Does any Does he have any issues that you know of with anybody? >> I I don't know. I know he's I don't know. I know how he is, but I don't know if it's worth anybody being that angry with him. >> So, also explain what you Sound Look like you're going to try to explain something to us. >> Like how he is. >> Yeah. >> He He's short-tempered. Um like I hear him yelling at his mom a lot. Um but that's just how he's always been, how I've always known him. He's up and down. One day he's Or not one day, one minute he's like super nice, next minute he's just really off. >> Okay. >> But again, I don't know any of his friends. Um he's talked about someone he works with named Andrew. Um I know David, that's our neighbor. We've gone to his house. Um but I don't know who he works with. I don't know I I just don't know anybody of that nature. I know names. >> Anybody that comes to mind where he was talking about I owe this person some money or hey, just be on the lookout cuz this guy's looking for me any type of thing. >> No, sir. People owed him money. Like he said, this guy this one right here owed him money. So. >> And then do you know Does You say he used to do drugs? Does he do anything like has he ever sold marijuana or sold >> Long time ago. That's what most of his charges were for like years ago. >> Like what kind of stuff was he What was he doing back then? >> Um I I do not know the specifics. I know he did time for them years ago, but from what I understand he's he's not doing anything. >> Well what Well was he doing? >> Um he he just like sold I guess. Um that was before I knew him though. >> What did he sell? >> I don't know, sir. I know he served time for it, but I really do not know. Like all of that took place before we met. >> Okay. Um What do you think it was like marijuana? Like did he have Did he talk about like who he sold for? And did like when he did that did Did he piss peop- anybody off when he was doing that? >> I No, sir. I don't know any of it. Like when we met he had just gotten out and it was he's trying to start his life over, you know, a fresh start. >> Did he own any weapons, handguns? >> Yes. Um but they're at my house now. >> Okay. >> Uh we took them over last night. Um we didn't bring the ammunition though. Like because there's no safe at my home for them. So we intentionally left the ammunition here. >> here? >> Yes, sir. >> And then the girl that's supposed to pick up the this car over here >> His ex-fiance. >> They were Okay, they were supposed to get married? >> Yes, sir. >> When did they break up? >> Um they broke up I want to say May. >> Of this year? >> Yes, sir. Um >> Do you know why they broke up? >> He was trying to get back with me and she moved all of her stuff out. She tried to come back and it just I From what he said, he'd rather try to make it work with me versus being with her. >> What was her reaction to that? Like as far as you could tell, like a lot of drama like >> He says that she's been trying to text him and he hasn't been answering. So >> Like showing up, where he's working or at home or anything? >> Um she did show up one time like out of the blue cuz I came up here to take the girls to school and she was here and we didn't not expect it. But she that blue car she's supposed to be driving back to wherever she's at. >> Mhm. >> Um but I don't know. I think it's Utah but he said she's coming because it has something about the 16th on it like the tags or something. >> expire. >> And um Yoko, I left the keys for Yoko just in case she did um in some little stand for her so. >> Did you mention earlier like when we were first talking as well like you guys were trying to avoid her, you know, cuz as far as her coming over or her showing up. Was that like a constant problem with her? >> Um I I wouldn't say a a problem but he didn't want to keep dealing with her he said. Like he he is wearing We actually threw his engagement ring in the trash last night. >> Okay. >> So he said it's done. He's 100% done and he wants to have a family with the girls and everything where we're not driving back and forth so. >> Yeah. >> We we brought as much as we could to the house last night. Um Um this Like literally we were doing this last night to get him out the house. >> Yeah. Have you seen like any of the text messages she sent him or anything? >> No, sir. He just said that he was done and I just kind of took him at his word. >> And she wasn't wanting to be done? >> I don't know if that was the case. I think >> It's worth looking at the camera like >> No, I think she was trying to get back with him because her situation wasn't working out. Like she left with some other guy and it wasn't working out based on what he was telling me. And he kept saying that um she was reaching out to him and then um I think some girl named Alyssa started reaching back out to him. >> Like another ex-girl? >> Yes, sir. And he said she reached out to him on Facebook. >> Uh what's um Jonathan's phone number? How about that Is that Yoko? That was talking to you in the first first drive? >> Yes, sir. That's his mom. >> Okay, yeah. >> Yeah, I was sitting there uh talking. Um >> Okay. >> Yeah, I've been trying to reach him but I just thought his phone was off again cuz that's normally what happens when I can't find him. Like from non-payment? >> Yeah, yeah. So. So there's nobody that he's mentioned that has issues with him that you can think of other than Andrea who they had they had a break up here they were supposed to get married but then they he said he tried to work it out with you. Um and then but you said that she left with another guy. So, it doesn't sound like she was too upset. >> No, um he was saying that it wasn't working out where she was at, and she was trying to >> come back. >> Yes, sir. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. I don't know if he was saying that just to kind of make me want him more or what the situation is, but that is what he was saying. >> Did they ever get into any physical fights that you know? >> And then Andrea >> Yes, sir. And I know Andrea was, um trying to press charges against Yoco at one point. >> Over here? >> Yes, sir. >> And then what about Amethia? That's she's the mother of Devier. >> Yes, sir. No, she lives in California. >> Does he talk to her at all? Nothing like that? >> Yes, sir. >> So, the physical fights that Andrea and Jonathan got into, how bad did they get? >> I was told she pulled a knife on him, but that's what I was told. I didn't see it. I wasn't around. >> Uh but it to the point where he get cut or get any injuries? >> He said he wasn't. He She just pulled it on him. >> So, uh you guys, when did you guys start talking back? >> Um we started talking more, I would say the beginning of this year, cuz I was coming down here to take the girls to school and things like that, and he was already saying Andrea was kind of on her way out. So, >> Okay. So, they were the girls were living over here? >> Yes, sir. >> With Yoco and Justin. And then, when did they move back in with you? >> The day school got out. >> So, around May? >> May 26th, 22nd. >> Okay. They moved back in with you, and you guys are starting to work things out at that point. And then, you guys have been off and on since when? >> No, we're not off and on. We're just trying to make a family work. Like, we're not physically intimate or anything like that. We're just trying to >> Be like a family unit. >> Cuz the girls really want >> You guys to be together? >> one house, yeah. >> Gotcha. >> And it saves on gas, so we were trying make it happen. >> Do you have a boyfriend or anything right now? >> Yeah, I'm married. >> You're married? >> Yes, sir. >> And All right, so I'm I was I was not told that information. I thought you guys >> but okay okay. >> We were told that you guys are possibly trying to get back together. >> No, we're trying to get everyone in one house and be a family. >> Okay. >> For the girls. >> So, who are you married to? >> I'm married to Devier. >> His son? >> Yes, sir. >> Oh, okay. So, Devier, his son, and you are now married. How long have you guys been married? >> Almost 2 years. >> 2 years? >> And yeah, John knows. >> So, so it wasn't like you you guys are trying to get back together. Like you said, intimately, you're just he's just going to move back in with with you to be with the girls. >> Yes, sir. >> Was there a reason for that? Just for the girls or was there other >> It benefit everyone. Um, he was having issues here. Yoko was trying to, you know, get him out, and I know he needed a place. >> And Devier was was good with having Dad come back even though the two >> I wouldn't >> good, but he understood. It wasn't his first choice for everything. >> And then, how do you spell Devier? D E V >> D E V I E R E >> D E V I E R E >> Yes, sir. >> You guys have known each other 2 years? >> Almost 2 years, yes. >> Have there been any issues with Devier and Jonathan? >> Yes, sir. Like they don't work together anymore, but they're not really >> Did he used to work as like the handyman stuff with them? What does Devier do now? >> Um installations for like security systems and stuff. >> Like cameras and things like that? Uh >> We had just taken the cameras down. >> Who did? >> John and I. We had the just taken the cameras down. They're at my house. >> The ones They were worth cameras off the on the >> Yes, sir. >> the house? When did those go down? >> Last night. We just brought them over. >> Oh, you just took them off last night? >> Yes, sir. >> There's no cameras left on there at all? And then, how many dogs are in the house right now that you know of? >> Four. >> And then, are they typically Where do they usually stay? >> Yeah. >> I mean like in the house like where or outside or >> room. >> So, they just all hang out downstairs in that >> Mhm. >> Is that considered a room? Like you walk down in there? >> That's where he sleeps. >> he stays. >> Yeah. >> And they usually just stay all down there. Does he you them outside at all ever or >> Yeah. Yeah, he puts them outside. There's um a patio door thing. So, yeah, he's a >> A doggy door? >> Yes, sir. >> Does that ever get locked or he just leaves them outside? >> No, it gets locked sometimes like when he's trying to eat and he doesn't want them >> coming in and out. All right. So, let's see. So, you and Devier have been married for 2 years. He's just John was just going moving back in with you guys and with the girls trying to keep the family together and it was beneficial for everybody. You were saying cuz of the driving and things like that or >> Not the driving. It was just the girls really want us together. And I know it's kind of complicated for them to understand that I'm married to Devier. So, we were bringing John to the house just to kind of keep things I know it sounds weird, but >> Do you have any kids with Devier? >> No, sir. I can't have any more children. >> You're all done having kids. How do the girls get along with Devier? >> Oh, they get along fine. We There was a CPS case filed um but it wasn't it wasn't true. My daughter had been suspended from school and kind of said some things to keep herself out of trouble. So, um my case was dropped. >> Okay. >> I mean, I don't know who you could talk to um the the neighbor, David? >> David? >> Yeah, I know John was supposed to go over there last night. >> He was over at David's. >> He was doing like a crab leg thing. >> Oh, like some kind of seafood boil or something. >> Okay, and then did uh did Jonathan have any workers that he had? >> Oh, yeah. >> Like any normal like day-to-day or was it always just something different? >> Um he had a few that were pretty routine. Um >> Do you know their names? >> I just know Andrew. Um I think the neighbor on the other house to the that way worked with him sometimes. >> Okay, do you know his name by chance? >> I want to say his name was David. >> David? >> Yeah. Not this guy, but a a David. >> Do you know Andrew's last name? >> No, sir. I know they they served time together. That's all I know. They used to be cellmates. >> You don't have Andrew's number, do you, by chance? >> No, sir. >> Would Javier know who Andrew is? Would they have they worked together? >> I don't know. >> I'm sure. >> Like I said, when John texts me it's usually, "Hey, I got this job. It's this, this, and this." So, I have those. Um but they don't really have names on them or anything anything like that. >> Uh when John goes to bed, is there like normal clothing that he wears? Like pajamas? >> I don't know. >> I think do you remember like would he sleep with just like shorts on? No shirt, shirt? Or just like an underwear boxers? >> The last time John and I shared a room, my daughter was 3 days old, my oldest daughter. So, I he used to wear boxers to bed. >> And that's it? >> Yes, sir. >> So, okay. That and that's all I know it was a long time ago, but sometimes habits don't change, you know. >> Uh I know he used to wear boxers. I don't really >> That's all he just he wore the boxers, no shirt, and that's it. >> Um yes, sir. Um When I left, he was wearing boxers. He had on I want to say like black boxers on. >> Okay. >> Boxers. Uh briefs. >> Does John have any tattoos? >> Yes. >> Do you know where and what? >> Um on his arm. Um I don't know which one is which, but it says Oriental John. He got it in prison. >> And then anywhere else? Do you know of? On his left arm? >> Yeah, one on each arm. I don't know which one >> Oriental John? >> Yeah. But he's had those as long as I've known him. >> So, you guys been moving his his stuff out of here, or was it the girl's stuff? >> Both. We brought all the girl's clothes and like the majority of his stuff last night. >> And then how long have you guys been moving stuff out of the house? >> Last night. >> That's it? >> Yes, sir. He loaded everything up that he could, and we just brought it over. Like he made it as quick as possible. >> Um And you're saying Davier was good with this arrangement? >> He was okay with it. I wouldn't say good is not his first option, but he understood. >> you're saying he that it benefited everybody. >> Yeah, and there wasn't like there was a lot of animosity about it. >> And then >> The biggest problem was the dogs. >> And when you guys were starting to talk to each other again, you and John, um would you say you haven't been intimate together? >> Mhm. >> Since for how long? >> 2018. 18. >> And then do you know anybody else that he might have been dating prior to Andrea? >> Everybody. Uh he was dating a Sarah, an Andrea, a Michelle. He he was just like when we separated, he was just going >> on dates like crazy. >> So, I don't know how many. He said he had five girlfriends at one time. >> As far as you know, he wasn't selling like anything illegal at right now? >> No, his hustle was he'd go to the Goodwill, buy things, and then try to resell them. >> Like OfferUp or something like that? >> Yeah, that's why like if you look in the backyard, there's a ton of bikes. >> Oh, I see. He just buys stuff. >> He would get like turf and just random things from his jobs and then try to resell them. Like it seemed like he was trying to do better than what he had been doing in previous years. >> Uh and were you guys hanging out at all? I know you were all day yesterday, but prior to that, that was like a regular thing you guys would hang out or >> Um yeah, we actually were here a couple of times this week, me and the girls. >> Okay. >> Um we had dinner and everything like that. Um I know we were here on the 4th cuz we went over to David's house. I think we were here like a week after that. So, it was just whenever >> Did this Debbie-Ann come with you guys on the >> Um no. It was It was me, John, and the girls. We were trying to build that together. >> And then for uh cuz Yoko is Debbie-Ann's grandmom, too, right? >> Yes. >> So, is there a reason why he wouldn't want to come over? >> No. >> He just left it with you guys? >> Yeah. >> Uh Any additional questions? I'll let the detectives >> No, I think we're good. >> Okay. Well, we have your phone number, so if there's anything extra that we need to talk to you about, uh we'll give you a call, okay? All the Only thing I can tell you is that My watch says 12:43, and that's going to end it. >> Okay.
