On August 22nd, 2022, families gathered at Saint Bridget Catholic School in Xenia, Ohio for a back-to-school open house and ice cream social. Staff called police after a man they did not know claimed to be the father of a kindergartner. >> So acted like the guy in the red shirt's daughter was his daughter. >> Okay. >> Have So no Have you ever seen him before? >> No, but no, I asked him When we walked in here, today's checking day. >> Okay. >> We walked up to the door and there was a line of adults. I looked at him and said, "You can go in." I thought he was waiting for a wife or something and he looked at me up and down and kind of smiled and went to say, "Hi." I said, "Hey." After we >> He did the same thing. >> ran into Mr. Atkins and he was describing something to my wife. I said, "Is he wearing blue and got a hair and all that?" He said, "Yeah." I said, "No." I know who you're talking about. He went in there. My wife said, "Is that my wife?" She said he did the same thing to her. He stood over my daughter's desk. He told me that he saw her picture. Stood over my daughter's desk and had conversations with her teacher about I will get these What stuff do I need? She was like, "You know, where's your Kleenex? Where's your pencil? I'll get this. I'll get that. Are you the father?" Yes. >> He asked me, "Is this where the supplies go?" and pointed to the supply table. >> Okay. And then are you teacher? >> Mom. >> Mom. Okay. >> wife and we have a daughter who goes to kindergarten. She's in the kindergarten. >> When he first came in, he was hanging out in the lobby. >> He said he drove by. I said, "How did you pick your from Fairborn?" He said, "My daughter's name He said He said he drove by and saw everything. The guy who was ID'd says Fairborn. >> Okay. >> He told me he was here. I said, "Who are you here with? Who are you related to?" He said, "My parents." So, obviously, I'm thinking, "Well, this isn't This is weird." I said, "Do you have a daughter here? He said, "Yes." I said, "What's her name?" He hesitated and finally said, "Um "Okay, what grade?" Went through that. So, we walked down there to the kindergarten room. He started asking questions of the kindergarten teacher. Well, later I These are new parents. I didn't know them yet. So, later I get introduced to them. And and I knew we got a problem cuz that was the name he was claiming. >> Cuz he was standing over her desk. He said, "Her name tag is on the desk." >> Okay. >> I need something done to eat with him. And I would appreciate every information on him so I can keep a tabs on him or something. >> Uh this event started at 5:30 and he probably came in about 5:35. I said we were Yeah, he came in about 5:35 and was hanging around. >> So So, what event is going on tonight? >> This is our back-to-school night. Uh people are bringing their supplies in, dropping them off, and meeting the teacher, and then coming to have some ice cream. >> It's my daughter you're wanting to talk to me. He's the one they're after, but I'm the I'm >> What's >> Uh-huh. >> Let's talk to him. Take him to >> Okay. What What's the order? What's going on? >> Uh all kinds. Just I'm just catching the group. >> Okay. >> But everything's down. >> Sounds like short and skinny. The trio give you more information. >> Okay. >> He's His daughter's here. He claimed that his daughter was here. Doesn't belong to her or him. ID also we're not sure who he is. >> Okay. >> All right. >> All right. I'll go talk to him and see what's going on. You guys >> Do you guys know his name yet? >> Okay. All right. What's going on, man? I'm Officer Peters. What's your name, my man? What is it? Weed? >> Weed. >> Weed? As in like w e e d? That what it is? Okay. So, what What are you here for today? >> Um they people I was here to find somebody's child. >> You're having psychological problems? What kind of psychological problems are you having? Are you like diagnosed with anything like that you know of or anything like that? Any chance of that? Okay. So, what what kind of psychological issue like what are what are you in more of a description way? Like what are you feeling? Paranoid? Do you know anybody here? You don't know anybody here. You don't know anybody's kids, nothing like that. Okay, you from Xenia? Fairborn area. How'd you end up here today then? Like how'd you get to St. Bridget? Heading to the ER. Okay. So, GME like Greene Memorial? Is that where you were trying to get to? Okay, how'd you end up here today? Like how did you walk from Fairborn or like how did you get here? Walk, drive, what did you do? Hm? You drove here? Okay. Is your car here? Okay, do you have an ID on you, my man? So, you said your first name was Weed, right? But it's looks like your first name has an Is it Reid or Weed? Like it's Okay, it's Reid like r e i d? Okay. 95 >> 95 >> Break for now. So, what's your what's your What was your plan? Like what what drew you to come here? Cuz there I'm just going off of what I've heard so far. They're trying to get the more of the full story right now, but from what I've heard you basically said that you knew a kid here where you had a kid that went here. They asked you who that kid was and you couldn't give them a kid name. Now, I'm trying to figure out why you're saying would What did you do? You just went I'm So, you came here. You gave a You gave a name with a J, right? Is what you're trying to say. For what reason did you do that? Be part of this group here? Or is it more or less how to Wait. Why do you want to be part of the group? Cuz obviously you said you're having some psychological issues, right? You admitted it to me. You said that you're trying to get the GMH, correct? And I'm taking that you drove by here and you saw everybody out here, correct? How How do you That's all my understanding. So, you you drove here, correct? You're trying to get the GMH. But it's not making sense how you're how you ended up here and why you ended up here if you're trying to go to the GMH. How many do you think you've talked to? >> Talked to a lot of people >> Just Just here? Yeah, just here. >> Families. >> Yeah, just like family members asking people about their kids and how old they were and how what grade they were in and stuff like that. How many do you think you've talked to? Seven? How you said seven? Okay, seven. So, obviously, man, people are people are obviously a little worried. It's not unusual. I'm honestly You're an older gentleman. you also don't have any kids here. They're obviously getting ready for school year. And you're kind of an outsider. You don't have anybody that goes here. You have really no business in being here. And you're going around asking parents how old their children are. And what grade they're in. That's a little It's a little weird. Admittedly so, right? Like if we can agree on that, it's not normal behavior. >> Good. >> That's not That's not normal at all. Okay. But you've never been psychologically, I guess, diagnosed with anything yet. >> I I really hate to interrupt again, but we got him sitting here and there's still kids around. He was trying to We don't know what his intent was. Well, we know what his intent was, but he didn't do it. Can we at least get him in the car, get him out of all these kids? >> So, I I don't want to put him in the back of a car because then it's a Then it's what? It's more of a >> protecting the kids? >> Sir, I >> We are I'm calling the state's attorney right now. >> Okay. >> I mean, I know you. You know me, but >> I I know. >> There's all these kids around. >> We're We're trying We're >> Put him in the back of the [ __ ] car. >> That's Guys, just a few minutes here. That's all I'm asking so that we can So we can put him somewhere. Just not here. Just not here. >> It's been almost an hour since he's followed my kid around. And he's right here. >> I I know. >> you want me way the heck away from everybody. He's right there. All we're reading now is you won't comply. That's I'm doing the best I can do, sir, per circumstances. >> Can you go get Can you go get the paperwork for >> I'm doing it. The best I can do. And he's sitting there. >> Sit back this way, please. >> What do you want from me? >> I I don't I've already asked you to to >> I asked you to put him in the in the car. That's all I asked. I didn't say lock him up or whoop him. I said put him in the car. >> I understand that. I understand that. Right now, I need you to focus on your breath. I need you to to to break down this a little bit, sir. >> You got kids. >> Court records identify the man as Reed Duran, then 35, from Fairborn. He had no child at the school and knew no one there. The principal testified that Duran changed clothes in a restroom before entering the kindergarten area. >> What what's in that bag? Books? Are those Those are those your books? >> Yeah. >> Or did you take them from here? Cuz I've seen you taking something from the kids and I'm starting to think this is not yours, either. Is this yours or not yours? And be honest. Why are you taking little kids' paperwork for? What's that all about? Cuz obviously you haven't been very truthful for with me, and you have walked into the school, from what I'm hearing. You start talking to a little girl, asking her where school supplies go, and I'm starting to think that's not yours, either. Yeah. Now I'm starting to get a little frustrated cuz you're not being completely honest. You walked into that school today. Sat behind a little girl, started talking to her. Didn't know anything about her. Didn't know anybody here. And you start talking to a little girl. What What the What is that about? What is the reason for that? To come to a school full of adults that you don't know and have no connection to this school is a weird thing in one way. But you throw it in with adults with their families, and then you walk into a classroom using somebody's kid's name. And then you go stand behind that little girl, and you talk to her, and you ask her questions. I think your alibi, what your intentions were, were completely different of what you're telling me. So just be honest, man. Just come off of it. What was your real intention to be here today? >> Everybody, including kids. >> Why kids? How You're How What's your age? >> 35 >> Okay, you're 35. Why you want to be around little kids? Who are like I'm looking at the age range of like six and like 10. Why? Why kids? Just come clean, man. Might as well. You already know that I know. What were you trying to do? Trying to do what? >> To be friendly with the kids. >> To be friendly with the kids. You're still going to You're still going to live with that. Just be friendly with kids. Here, tell me you You saw these kids or whatever. You drove by here, saw kids here. And you just wanted to be friendly with the kids. Are you really having a psychological issue where you really trying to get to the G M H or were you really just trying to get here? Just trying to come here? Okay. The G M H was never in the question. And that you were just trying them to be friendly with the kids and your intentions were here to just be friendly with the kids. >> What What's your name, sir? What is it? >> Reed Duran >> Reed Duran? Okay. So, you said you drove here, correct? All right. What What vehicle is yours? >> It's the red the red Hyundai Sonata. >> Okay. Red Hyundai Sonata? Okay. Uh I'm assuming four-door? All right. Is there any tinted windows or anything like that? >> No. No. >> All right. Would you be willing to to allow us to to look through the car? Okay. Uh how about you walk with us up there then? >> Okay. Can I leave this here? >> Grab it. H C Y 7098 All right. You're allowed to leave. >> search through the vehicle, correct? All right. Watch. Clear. >> You have a thing in there about recovery. New user? What do you usually use? >> Cocaine. >> Cocaine? Okay. When's the last time you used? What else Okay, what else do you use? Do you use cocaine and something else? >> Just like pills. >> Pills? What kind of pills? >> Downers. >> Downers? Got you. When's the last time you used, my man? This morning. Coke or or both? >> Both. >> Both. So, I take it that you take coke and get too high. Where at? In the trunk? You gave us permission to look in the trunk? He said that you can look in the trunk. He said there might be the coke and pills in there. How much is it going to be? Are we talking about an eight ball or are we talking just like a minuscule amount? What are we talking? >> Like 2 g of coke. >> 2 g of coke? How many pills? 20? And it's just going to be a variety of downers, just like a variety of pills, different ones, or they're just going to be all the same? >> [snorts] >> 883. >> Go ahead. Yeah, so as far as this goes I I don't I don't have anything unless I I mean look up anything in the or she about I off the top of my head I don't I I don't see where we have anything. >> Despite Duran's claims, officers found no illegal drugs in the vehicle. >> You're lying to me. No, addicts know what their what their pill of choice is. Addicts know what their drug of choice is. So, tell me what is what is your pill of choice? What is your drug of choice? Okay, so when you take cocaine what what what happens to you when you take cocaine? What What What's the high that you get from that? Can you explain that to me? Can you describe that to me? >> It's like it's like an upper. >> Okay, other than upper, other than generic common terms, explain to me what your high is. Okay, you're lying to me. Stop lying to me. I don't know why you were lying to me. >> What he's trying to get is like a specific drug, like Vicodin, Percocet. >> I I >> I don't I don't think they're a drug I don't even think he's a user. I I don't think you're a drug user. I think you're using that as a crutch or as an excuse. So, what are you doing here in Zillah? >> Just I guess not making good choices. >> What do you mean you guess? What what brought you here? >> You better tell him everything that you told me because I already know the story. >> Yeah. >> So, you better tell him and don't think. Start talking. >> Look at me. Look me in the eyes, tell me your story. >> I >> Look me in the eyes, tell me your story. What are you doing here? >> I came here to be with kids. >> To be what? >> I mean, just >> With kids? >> Yes. >> You came here to be friendly with kids? >> I don't know why >> Sir. >> With the drug story falling apart, officers returned to the central question. Why had Duran come to a school where he knew no one? >> John, I'm not talking to >> What he did out of the car. >> Is that him? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. First off, >> Yes, sir. >> All right. Thank you, guys. I don't know. >> So, he didn't want to let you leave down here in the bathroom so we could have >> Yeah. >> And if you play along, right? >> I guess it's probably to check the windows and make sure they're all locked and all that stuff. >> I I I know you I know you've gone through the story a couple times now because we we have to keep switching out. All right. So, can you Can you pick up on your story where you left off with me? >> With him? >> With me. Or where where were you with him? >> I'm with him. >> Yeah. >> Um while I was here. >> Okay. And and why why were you here, sir? >> Because because of kids. >> Okay. What What do you mean because of kids? Okay. So, you're you're attracted to children? Okay. So, So, What What was your What What What were you coming here to do tonight? What What was What Walk me through what what was going to go on tonight? >> I was I was going to meet you with the kids. >> Okay. Just Anyone in particular? Was there a specific >> Just anyone in particular. >> Okay. Um So, So, walk me through When When you got here, what happened? Did Did you give a name or anything for the child that was going to school? Okay. How How'd you get that name? >> I just came up with a name that had J in it. >> What Why did it have to >> Just the first name and then the first letter of the last name. >> All right. So, >> [laughter] >> All right. So, Is that Is that honestly the truth? Because I don't I think you saw that name or came up with that name some other way. So, how how'd you come up with that name? So, was it >> I researched >> Okay. So, was it online? Okay. So, you knew that name before you got here. Okay. All right. So, walk me through You you came in How how'd you get How'd you get in? Were you let in? Did Was the door unlocked? Can Can you explain that to me? Okay. So, you walked in with the families. All right. Then then where did you go from there? >> I went to the bathroom. >> Okay. What did you do in the bathroom? >> I changed my clothing. >> Why did you change your clothing? Just answer me. Why Why did you change your clothing? >> Just to kind of like blend in, I guess. >> Okay. So, what what clothing were you wearing? Without Look Look me in the eyes. What What did you wear in? >> Pair of jeans. >> Okay. Pair of jeans and what? Was there same shirt, different shirt? >> Different shirt. >> Okay. What color was the shirt you wore in? >> Salmon. >> Salmon? >> Like a >> Okay. >> You know, like >> Yeah, I know the color salmon. All right. So, you wore blue jeans and a salmon colored shirt when you walked in. So, why did you change once you came in? Were you Were you here for her or for anybody else or was it multiples? He >> It was It was just her. >> Just her? Okay. So, how how'd you How'd you pick her? All right. Look Look at me. All right. What What How'd you pick her? What What made you pick her? >> I don't Just by her looks. >> Okay. Was this prior to tonight or >> Yeah. >> Okay. So prior to tonight, you looked up her Was it on the registry here at What What stuff did you do to look her up? >> I looked at the registry and found out what what kids were on registry that didn't didn't go to the school. >> Okay. Do they have You say you you chose her based on her looks prior to tonight though, right? >> It was just by I liked the name. >> Okay, so you liked the name. All right, so what You already said So you liked the name and then you said you were attracted to children. So you're you're a minor attracted adult, is that correct? Okay. So So what What was your intent What what was the plan tonight? Just look at me. It's you and I right now, okay? So what was your plan tonight? >> To take her home with me. >> Okay. And what? And what? Okay. Touch her how? >> Inappropriately. >> What What do you mean inappropriately? >> Something to do with the nudity of a child. >> Okay. Uh What And what What would be the What would be the purpose in this? Like what Why did you want to come here and take her home with you and touch her? What What Why did you want to do that? >> Because it's a sexual desire that I have. >> Okay. All right. Just hang tight for me, okay? >> Okay. I don't know if he's in here anymore, but >> That was Reed. What's up? >> He's going to give me a call back. >> He just said >> He said he's going to try to take one. >> For sexual gratification. He wanted to touch her. He wanted to take her home, touch her, and it was for sexual gratification. He looked up her name on the registry prior to coming here tonight. He came here specifically because he liked that name, saw her name associated with the picture, was attracted to her, planned on taking her home with him. >> Okay. All right. Good luck. He's going to call me back. >> What's up? >> And so he got here wearing jeans and a salmon colored shirt. As soon as he got in, he went to the bathroom to change clothes so that nobody would recognize him. >> Yeah, he's trying to fit in more. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Um there's twine and all kinds of rope maps and all kinds of other crap >> Eddie. >> in his car. Mr. Green it is? >> Duran. >> What is it? >> Duran. >> Duran, sorry. Apologize. Would you be willing to come down to the station and talk with us anymore? >> Yeah, that's fine. >> All right. Yeah, want you to come on. Do you have anything on you we need to know about? Don't Don't reach in your pockets for me. I don't know I I I haven't been here with you. I don't know what you got on or anything like that, okay? Do you have anything on you we need to know about? >> Um >> No? Okay. Which car is closer? >> Yours is the newer. >> Mine? Okay. We're going to step over here, okay? >> Over here. >> Is this your bag? Okay. All right. Step over here for me. All right, here's the thing. I'm going to search you. I'm going to make sure you don't have anything on you. I need you to put your hands behind your back. All right, you're not under arrest right now. Okay. Interlock your fingers for me. There you go. What's this right here? >> It's uh Just give me a second, sir. >> What is it, man? Is there anything illegal? >> I can't remember. >> Would you mind if I got in your pocket and retrieved it? Okay. >> That's fine. >> All right, man. You're good. Go ahead, have a seat. We'll be with you just for a moment. Ma'am, if you want to step over here. That way that way I only have to say it once. Um So, just so you know, uh we are taking him down to the PD. A detective and our detective sergeant is are coming in to interview him. Okay? Um There There will be charges for criminal trespass. Uh and then after the interview we'll go from there on what uh what potential charges I do have. I have all of your information. And if the detective or the detective sergeant needs to get a hold needs to get a hold of you for any reason, they'll reach out to you. And then also uh we'll try to keep you apprised of the situation uh as as best as I can. Okay? So, but right now he he's voluntarily going down to the going down to the PD. And I say he he's willing to speak with a detective about what's going on tonight. >> Duran agreed to go to Xenia police headquarters for an interview. Court records say he was not under arrest at that point. He waited unrestrained in an unlocked room with Officer Nicholas Peters. >> 956 I need a unit up here. You need to [ __ ] put your hands behind your back now. >> Okay. >> Stop. Put your hands behind your back now. >> Okay. >> You [ __ ] kidding me right now? Put your hands behind your [ __ ] back now. Try to [ __ ] stab me, really? >> What are you trying to stab me with? >> What? A [ __ ] pen. You kidding me? >> Hey Liam, where's the Where was the pen at? >> [ __ ] hell. >> Right there, I said. >> Right there. >> Yeah, yeah, no, I know where it is now, but was it on the table? >> On the table. >> Well, get him off his chest. >> Stand up. >> What do we do? >> How do I see the clip? >> I'll see you. >> All right. >> The investigation continued after the attack. Court records say Duran later tried to flee from a secure area at the police station. A Greene County grand jury charged him with attempted kidnapping, felonious assault on a peace officer, and escape. In March 2024, a jury found Duran not guilty by reason of insanity on the attempted kidnapping charge, but guilty of felonious assault and escape. The court committed him to Twin Valley Behavioral Health Care and imposed an aggregate prison term of 8 to 12 years to begin after his release from the hospital. In January 2025, the court released him from the commitment and transferred him to Ohio's prison system. The Second District Court of Appeals affirmed the judgment on June 20th, 2025.
