5350 St. Louis. We're moving up to the houses. Show me your hands. Show me your hands. Put that down. >> Stop. Hold fire. >> Shots fired. >> 5350 St. Louis. Shots fired. On July 15th, 2025, a quiet morning in Norman Township, just 18 mi northeast of Duth, Minnesota, turned chaotic. St. Louis County Sheriff's deputies responded to a dangerous arson incident that escalated into a deadly officer involved shooting. Today, we break down the events, the police response, the suspect, and the impact on the community using body cam and dash cam footage released by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. [Music] Mail. Mail. Mail. >> Your hands. Move your hands. >> Stop. Hold. Fire. Shots. >> At approximately 9:20 a.m. the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office 911 Center received a call reporting a structure fire on Heritage Road. The caller stated that their neighbor, 57year-old Adam Clinton Wolf, had sprayed a family member with gasoline and set their home on fire as well as his own. Moments later, another neighbor reported that Wolf was armed with a rifle and riding a lawn mower, attempting to ignite another nearby residence. Go. >> The other side of that first fire on the road on the left side is some crash object. I can't tell if it's a lawn or not. I don't see any people around it, but some object on the other side of fire. >> A solo volunteer firefighter arrived and extinguished fires at two neighboring homes. As the firefighter left one of the houses, he reported hearing gunshots and believed he was being targeted. A Duth Township police officer arrived shortly after and also reported being shot at. This set the stage for a high-risisk response from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. Yeah. >> Coming out. >> I mean, I could probably drive past this, but it's going to be a little dicey. >> Just before 10:00 a.m., five St. Lewis County deputies, Sergeant Zachary Peterson, Deputy Charles Bennett, Deputy Matt Miranda, Deputy Forest Lunan, and Deputy Michael Peicul approached the scene. Body cam and dash cam footage released on July 29th, 2025 shows deputies moving cautiously down a gravel road behind a sheriff's truck with black smoke billowing from nearby fires. The footage captures a tense moment. Deputies spot a fire burning on the roadside, suspected to be one of Wolf's improvised devices. They call for a drone to locate the suspect. Suddenly, Adam Wolf emerges from a wooded area holding a rifle style weapon. Deputies shout commands, ordering him to show his hands. Instead, Wolf fires at them. Within seconds, the deputies return fire with one deputy even shooting through his squad car windshield. Wolf collapses and is later pronounced deceased at the scene despite life-saving efforts. 535 coming out. Coming out. >> The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, BCA, which is investigating the incident, recovered a firearm similar to a shotgun, spent cartridge casings, and 12 improvised shotgun type devices along the roadway. Authorities believe these were set up as booby traps to target first responders. >> All right, everybody's good. >> Yeah, we're good. >> You want to cover them for me? Back up. Attack. Reload. >> The five deputies who discharge their firearms have been identified by the BCA. Sergeant Zachary Peterson with seven years of law enforcement experience. Deputy Charles Bennett with 10 years of experience. Deputy Matt Miranda with 10 years of experience. Deputy Forest Lunaman with three years of experience. Deputy Michael Picul with seven years of experience. All were wearing body cameras and their footage is under review by the BCA. The deputies have been placed on standard critical incident leave pending the investigation's outcome. >> 5350 St. Louis. We're moving up to the houses. >> Show me your hands. Show me your hands. Put that down. Stop. Hold fire. >> Shots fired. >> 5350 St. Louis. Shots fired. >> Thankfully, no first responders or neighbors were physically injured during the incident. The primary victims were the neighbors whose homes were targeted. Wol's own home was destroyed by fire and two neighboring homes sustained fire damage. Though the volunteer firefighters quick actions prevented further destruction. One neighbor reported being sprayed with gasoline by Wolf, a terrifying act that heightened the urgency of the response. Court records also reveal Wolf had a history of harassing a neighbor with convictions for violating restraining orders in 2023 and a pending case scheduled for trial just days before this incident. We need we need a check up there for the detail. >> The BCA is conducting an ongoing investigation, reviewing body cam and dash cam footage and will present its findings to the St. Louis County Attorney's Office for review. Sheriff Gordon Ramsay expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, including our deputies, 911 staff, fire, and emergency personnel, and the neighbors and family of Mr. Wolf." This tragic event underscores the dangers faced by first responders and the impact of such incidents on small communities. The release of body cam footage aims to provide transparency as the investigation continues. Stay tuned for updates as the BCA completes its review.
