Where? Where? Where? Stop. Yo, stop. >> On January 8th, 2026 in the West Village area of New York City, the suspect was identified as Dimmitri Zas, 37 years old. After the second impact, the civilian backed away to maintain a safe distance from the suspect. [snorts] At the same time, another civilian, unaware of what had occurred, inadvertently drove up close to Zas's BMW. Meanwhile, two New York City Police Department officers, Officer Jessen Gonzalez and Officer Christopher Rodriguez, were patrolling the area when civilians flagged them down and pointed toward the suspect's vehicle. The two officers immediately approached the BMW. >> Where where? >> Suddenly, Zass exited the vehicle holding an object that appeared to be a firearm and pointed it toward the officers. 91 for the director. >> No. STOP. It was determined to be a Sig Sauer air gun that fires plet rounds, not a real firearm. However, it closely resembles the Sig Sauer M17 Luger 9mm handgun. In fact, Sig Sauer has previously promoted that its air guns and rifles are designed to closely replicate real firearms. At the scene, officers determined that the weapon carried by Zas was potentially lethal, and they were unable to distinguish it from a real firearm during a direct confrontation.
