This is Tierra Kirkland, a 44-year-old woman from Florida. Just a few minutes ago, an ordinary road crossing had turned into a fatal crash that would soon bring police rushing to the scene. On June 12th, 2024, when Tierra took a left turn at Saint Ocala, a Honda Civic and a Toyota Scion came in at full speed and crashed into her car. The Scion flipped multiple times before coming to rest on top of another vehicle. The front seat passenger was ejected and died at the scene instantly, while the driver of the Scion was critically injured and died 4 days later. Luckily, Tierra wasn't critically wounded, but the moment the crash happened, Tierra immediately knew she had something to hide. >> Going to be on the northeast corner of the intersection. I'm going to need a unit down at Jacksonville Road and get every I'm sorry, Magnolia Road. Get everybody going north. 21, 30. 10-4. Can you hear me? >> Yes, I can. >> Where are you hurting? >> I'm burning. >> You're burning? Okay, that's probably from the airbag, okay? Is there anybody else in your vehicle? Just you? Does anything specifically hurt? >> Just that is burning. >> Just that stuff? Okay. Hang out here, okay? >> 10-4, 10-397. 10-4. >> 10-6, 10-4. I need JHA. >> 10-4. >> All right. I'm going to get this airbag cut out of here, okay? Can you tell me what happened? >> I was turning left. >> 10-4. >> My light was green and they came out of nowhere. You were turning? You were making a left or making a right turn? Where were you coming from? Okay, so you were coming And then you're making a left turn? Okay. Okay. Are you able to get out? Do you want to get out? Yeah, you can get out. I'm going to have you sit up here on the Just be careful there's oil on the ground. We'll try to find it later, okay? So be careful there's oil on the ground. >> God, that burns. >> Okay, you want to just go ahead and just have a seat right on the curb over here, okay? Just right over here on the curb. And you got your ID for me? Holy cow. Up and over those cars. Yeah, that's their car. >> That's what I'm saying. I was turning over here and he came out of nowhere. Jesus Christ. I didn't know where he came from. It was just It was all of a sudden. >> But the only thing that hurts is the burning sensation? >> is killing me. I'm going to call my boss. >> You got your phone on you or you need me to find it in your car? In your car? What's it look like? >> Let me see if I got it. No, I don't have it. It's purple. >> 601 is the code. I didn't say I'm 97. >> It's purple. >> Purple. 797. >> All right, just have a seat. I'll get it for you. >> Oh my god, my car. >> Um I'm already on 3. Do you want me to run her? >> Go ahead. >> I'm not next to the other one, but can you 65 her driver's license as well? And Miss Carr, are you going to be okay? You were in this vehicle, correct? >> Okay. >> Are you okay, though? >> Yeah, I'm just burning. >> Okay. >> You said it was the airbag. >> Um do you want them to check you out real quick while they're here cuz you got some some burning right here. >> All right. Are you okay for the moment? Okay, I'll come back to you in just a second. >> No, he he went there. >> Yeah. >> Is that where you went? >> Yes, ma'am. >> No, I was just telling them I was turning and all of a sudden he came out. >> So, you were making a turn? >> I was coming here and he came there and he got me and he took me all around. >> So, you were going this way and make a left-hand turn. Okay. >> And then he came out of nowhere. >> Okay. And Miss Carr, what's a good phone number for you? >> 352 27. >> Were you you were wearing your seat belt? >> Yep. >> Okay. >> Like I said, I was turning here >> Yeah. >> and there was it was clear. >> Uh-huh. >> So, I just turned and all of a sudden, bam. And the next thing I know, I'm flipped around. >> Okay. >> All right. >> Okay, so I see you got some scratches on you. >> I'm burning. >> Yeah. >> god, I'm burning. >> If you want to come out over here so we're out of the roadway and that way once they get done checking getting him out of the >> He was over there. >> I have no idea, ma'am. Was he going straight this way or he was coming this way? Okay. >> But I had almost passed the light. It was almost green on my side, so I just kept going. >> Okay. >> And then all of a sudden he just came out of nowhere. I don't know what way I was past this, so he had to been going straight or turning. >> Okay. >> And he got me. Cuz I had green. >> You said was the turning arrow green or was it blinking yellow like it is right now? >> No. I was going straight, so I don't know how he got me in that lane. I wasn't even in the >> But you had the green light. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, she's the other driver. >> Okay, you were one of the drivers? >> Yeah. >> All right, so I'll just have you fill out all the witnesses over there. >> You're good. >> Yep. >> Um were you the only person in your vehicle? Okay. Do you have somebody that can give you a ride? >> Yeah, I'm trying to see right now >> Okay. >> There is a bag of needles in that car, in the back seat. >> It's a bag of what? >> There's a bag in the back seat I need >> Okay. Well, we will get that out of there before it gets towed away, okay? >> need I need that cuz that's my work clothes. >> Got you. >> Yeah. Work clothes. >> There's somebody here that's going to come uh they're basically going to ask you the same questions I did um just to investigate the entire thing and once they get the whole vehicle situated and ready to tow, we'll either let you go back in there or we'll go in there and get everything you need, okay? >> But I do have a correction to make. I was in the turn lane. You are right. >> Okay. >> But it was flashing yellow. >> Okay. >> And there was nobody coming my way. >> Okay. >> So I went ahead and made it but there was no >> Right. >> And he came out of nowhere from this side. >> Okay. >> So I'm assuming if I have a yellow light, he does not have a yellow light. >> If it's blinking yellow like like what it is right now >> But if he's He's from this side, what does he have? >> From which way? >> This way. >> This way? Making a right right here or going this way? >> I guess he was trying to go that way. >> going that way and you've got the yellow light, it should have been red, but we'll have to the person who's actually >> this turn lane. >> Okay. >> That's where I messed up cuz I I know I had to turn before the bridge. >> Okay. >> So, I got into the turn lane. Like I said, it was Um yeah, it was blinking yellow. So, I got in the turn lane and I went to turn. >> Okay. Okay. >> And then all of a sudden, smash. >> Yeah. Okay. Well, like I said, there's another officer that's investigating the crash, so you he's probably going to ask you the same questions I did, okay? >> I mean, I'm just trying to remember everything cuz it happened so fast. >> Yeah, no, I completely understand. >> In the middle of the questioning, Tierra suddenly changed her story. At the time, the interrogating officer had no way of knowing whether she was deliberately rewriting the facts or simply correcting an earlier mistake. And if it was a mistake, was it the result of shock and confusion after the crash or was there another reason behind it? It wouldn't take long for investigators to find out. >> 1 2 3 4 5 6 >> Any car that's tagged? >> Any car that was tagged? >> Yeah. >> Let's go ahead and add it to the call. You got a lot to do. >> Yeah. >> You need help with that? >> I did put the red car >> That should be tagged. >> Okay. >> Hey. >> You need anything else? You need somebody to help you? >> No, I'm all I got time. We're going to be on this one for a while. Yeah, I got time. >> Hey. >> Hopefully it don't start raining. >> Oh, yeah, it just >> OPD admin. >> 6917 >> 6917 >> You're Mr. Raymond, correct? You were in the green car? Okay. And you did get sideswiped. >> I I would say that. I do myself, so I might have hit the curb more than anything, but he was his car was >> Was that after the original collision? Okay. Okay. Left onto 20th Street. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Um So he was in the inside lane. He's in the inside lane, you're in outside lane. Okay. 6920 Yeah, okay. 26, thank you. Thank you. >> Um, so there obviously he passed away. Um, we have an investigator coming out here. He's going to ask you the same questions I'm asking you, but >> if you don't mind just hanging around, um >> This sucks. I'm not even bothered by >> Yeah. Are you okay though? >> I'm I'm completely fine. I'm completely fine. I got to check the car, but for the >> Yeah. Other than that, you're not injured? Okay. >> I'm just a little shaken up. Chest hurts and stuff. >> Okay. She is right there. They want us to kind of stay over here. Yeah. >> Yeah, make sure she don't leave. >> Yeah. Okay. Were you guys Did you guys see what happened? >> No, I was in the building, but I >> Okay. >> I'm just going to say one thing. If you can Once somebody wants to come by tomorrow, I don't know how to do it, but it's something I think there's a camera that caught that. >> Perfect. You own this building. This building right here. Okay. >> three cameras up there. >> Do any of them point over here? >> I don't know how to do it. I can show you. >> Okay. >> The moment the officer watched the actual CCTV footage of the crash, everything was clear to her. The deputies quickly realized Tierra was more than a victim caught in a tragic crash. Despite her efforts to hide the signs and appear normal, they suspected she was under the influence. As a result, the officers performed a field sobriety test on her, but she failed in walk and turn and one leg stand. Even her eye movement indicated intoxication. Investigators built their case using crash scene evidence, surveillance footage, dash and body camera recordings, a Farrow scan, and blood samples sent for testing. They also noted that her breath samples measured more than twice Florida's legal limit. Tierra Lynn Kirkland was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter. Her bond was set at $30,000, and she was later arraigned in the fifth judicial circuit court.
