The sergeant suspected Susanna was drunk after smelling alcohol from 6 ft away, hearing her slurred speech, and watching her drive off and make a U-turn instead of stopping after the impact. Hours later, toxicology tests confirmed it. By then, Passion Lucas, airlifted from the scene, was already pronounced dead, turning the case into a homicide investigation. Susanna was released that night, but 5 months later, on December 8th, 2021, investigators reviewed CCTV footage showing her drinking beer and shots backed by credit card receipts. Quickly, Susanna was arrested and charged with DUI and DUI manslaughter.
