He already said he's not coming out until you guys kill him. So, >> FIRE. >> Come here. Come here. Come here. Come to me. Come to me. Come to me. >> Over here. Over here. >> Yeah. We're going to have >> what seems like a normal evening inside a home on Nutell Drive in St. Cloud, Florida, suddenly turned into a nightmare. Inside the house lived 48-year-old Joseé Manuel Otero with his wife and their children. According to investigators, an argument broke out between Jose and his wife, and what started as a domestic dispute quickly escalated into deadly violence. >> 911. What's the address of the emergency? I think my dad just saw one saw. >> My dad is upstairs with the gun. I don't know. He went back to the room. >> What? Your mom. >> He just shot her. >> No, he just shot her in the bathroom. >> How many shots were fired? [music] >> The child's frantic 911 call confirmed every officer's worst fear. Before anyone had reached the home, dispatchers [music] learned that a shooting had just taken place and that the suspected gunman was still inside the house. With very little information to work with, officers rushed to the scene knowing they could be walking into an [music] active and unpredictable situation. In an instant, the entire situation changed. What officers believed was a rescue mission had suddenly become an active gunfire [music] encounter. As they approached the front of the home, at least one shot rang out from inside, forcing [music] officers to retreat and take cover. With bullets being fired from the residents, they could no longer assume it was safe to enter. Their priority immediately [music] shifted from rushing inside to containing the scene and preventing anyone else from being [music] hurt. >> St. Cloud Police Department, make yourself known. fire. >> As more officers arrived, they [music] immediately began evacuating nearby residents. With an armed suspect still inside the home and gunfire already reported, no one could predict what might happen next. Families were rushed to safety while officers worked to secure the neighborhood and prepare for a situation that was becoming more dangerous by the minute. Yeah. Do me a favor. Walk all the way down there. Run across here. Don't walk. Just run. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Over here. Over here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come to me. Come to me. Come to me. >> Over here. Over here. Come on. >> Being evacuated. >> Stay right here, buddy. Stay right here. >> Come over here. Come to me. Come to me. Over this side. Over this side. Right here. Stay here. Stay here. Stay here. >> One of the neighbors has a phone number for the guy. >> Go ahead. Stand behind this car, man. myself a modeling containment behind the car. >> Stand by for >> Thank you. >> Do you want to put a page out to patrol and then have everybody >> the officer was telling me the one that is outside my house >> on the next door neighbor? >> He was telling me that we have his phone number. >> So, who knows Jose Ortega? >> They are his kids. >> Okay. Does anyone have a number for Jose? Okay. Can I get >> you know what the uh procedure should have it? >> Okay. >> With the children safely away from the home, officers focused on gathering as much information as possible. They needed to know what they were walking into, including whether Jose had access to firearms, what kind of weapon he might be carrying, and who was still believed to be inside the house. Every answer helped officers evaluate the danger before deciding how to move forward. >> What does your dad do? What is his job? >> Uh, he builds like both. >> Okay. How many guns does he have? >> Is it a pistol? A rifle? >> I'm not sure. >> It's a >> handgun. Handgun. Okay. >> Harrison. >> Does he have any military experience? >> No. >> Thank you. Where are you at? >> All right. Thank you. Give me one second. Stay right here. Okay. Who's supposed to be in the house? >> Me and him. >> Okay. So, only people in there right now should be your mom and your father. >> Yes. >> Does your dad speak any English? He doesn't speak any English. >> As the uncertainty continued, officers knew approaching the house any closer could put lives at risk. Instead, they turned to technology, hoping it could provide answers without exposing anyone to more danger. A drone was prepared to fly over the property, giving officers their first opportunity to safely gather information from above before making their next move. >> Hey, I'm getting ready to put the drone up. This hell's cooling right here. [screaming] >> Hey SRG, he's all the way down the hallway. He's all the way down the hallway with a light going on his on a rifle. It looks like a rifle. >> How far back in the house is he? >> He's all the way back. On the three side, there's two windows and a sliding glass door. >> He's asking if you can see inside through the door. >> Through the windows or through the door. >> Through the window. Through the window. Serge. Sarge. There's a high fence. We We have no shot back there. There's a there's a tall fence back there, >> but you can see through the front door. You can see him. >> Yeah. >> Through the front door towards the back of the >> While officers [music] used the drone to pinpoint Jose's location inside the home. Other officers began calling him in an effort to negotiate. Knowing Jose did not speak English, they switched to Spanish so there would be no language barrier as they tried to convince him to come outside peacefully. Jose, can you hear me? During the negotiations, Jose told officers that a 10-year-old boy was still inside the house with him. The statement immediately raised the stakes because officers believed a child could [music] still be trapped inside. But based on everything officers had already learned from the children outside the home, they had reason to question whether Jose's claim was true. Unsure of what to believe, they continued treating every possibility as real while working to verify the information before making their next move. advis. Okay. 10y olds. Okay. Give me one sec. >> Okay. Okay. Nobody ask. Okay. What's the name again? Jose. Okay. Don't make any promises. No, no, I didn't. I asked him if he can come out. He's like, "For what?" "So you guys can grab me?" >> I was like, "No, so we can talk to you, brother, brother, and figure out what's going on inside. Jose. saying that's a TV that's on the shot. Okay. What do you want? I don't know. I don't know right now. My mind is gone. Is heard anything? [music] asking if you wanted to come outside. >> Okay. What's the name of Jose? Okay. No, no, I didn't. I asked him if he can come out. He's like, "For what?" So you guys can grab me. I was like, "No, so we can talk to you brother and figure out what's going on." Jose [music] the TV that's on the shots. Okay. He wasn't Okay, let's go. We're going to hang up until I don't want to give too much time. >> Shut off the phone. While waiting for Jose to answer the phone, officers shifted their attention back to the children. With negotiations temporarily at a standstill, detectives continued asking questions, hoping to better understand exactly what had happened inside the house. The children's account would become one of the most important pieces in reconstructing the moments leading up to the shooting. >> So, you two were the only ones in the actual house at the time? >> Yes. >> Okay. Who called 911 originally? Uh I well and then I was like >> so who was the first person to call though? >> I really don't know so I can I heard >> So you two were in the house with mom and dad originally. You guys heard the shots and then you guys left or >> I ran upstairs. You screaming for my name. >> He shot me in front of me >> and then I went to his room and I got home and ran out. >> Okay. You ran out the house and you went to the neighbor's house. >> Yeah. >> And then from the neighbor's house you guys tried calling again. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. It was a I think my brother was >> everything novel novel >> when you went upstairs. What did you see exactly? >> I saw my mom running telling him to stop him behind her. I don't understand what's going on. I thought honestly I thought it was a great gun that he was shooting her with until I I saw her blood. >> When you got upstairs originally, was she already shot or >> he was shooting at her? >> He was still Okay. So when you you went upstairs, did you heard the shots then or finding? Yeah, I saw him still shooting at her even though he saw me at her. >> Okay. >> Shot her like three times her. >> How many shots in total do you think? >> Okay. So, probably one or two before you went up there and then >> one shot. I just heard screaming and then Okay. So you said you heard the screaming and you heard about you said one shot. >> I heard I heard three. I didn't hear four. >> Oh heard about one and then three. >> I got out and I just saw three bullets on the floor. >> Okay. So you saw the the ground. Okay. And you when you were you upstairs as well? >> Yeah. I was I was in a call with my cousin. >> Okay. Got you. >> As detectives continued interviewing Jose's 24year-old daughter, the investigation took another emotional turn. She told investigators that the day before the shooting, her mother had shared a deeply troubling conversation with her. According to the daughter, her mother said Jose had made a threatening statement during an argument after the couple had been drinking and that the confrontation continued while they were out together before carrying over into the following day. Detectives carefully documented her account as they worked to determine what had led up to the deadly violence. tomorrow to go to California for work. So I have to grow my nails, my face on my nails. We were talking and she was telling me about fighting and why he was fighting that he was accusing her of cheating like always with some boss that she had a long time ago which they were just good friends. There was, you know, my mom didn't he was never doing anything without me, nothing. But he he's like narcissist um narcissistic, so he wouldn't pick off bites before any major event like tomorrow. So I already called it. But anyways, it was fine. She was downstairs and then I told me um made I made her dog for me and my little brother to eat. He's still in the clouds, you know. My dad came. He had left. He came back with groceries, but when he tried to go grocery back upstairs, um, I went to my nail room to do my nails. I was looking to do my nails and I heard her screaming. >> She was screaming, calling my name and telling him to stop. Um, that's when I heard the gunshot. I thought that it was a trade gun. I thought that he was trying to scare her until I walked into the bathroom and he shot her multiple times. He shot her as he was looking at me. >> You're in the K9. >> You walked in upstairs. >> Yeah, I walked in upstairs as he was shooting her. She was in our bathroom. >> She was slumped over. I saw the blood. I didn't see how much blood. So, I'm hoping she's still alive. I don't know because >> Can you describe This is your dad, bro. >> Can you describe what your dad's wearing? He looks like he has >> I think he didn't have a shirt on. >> He didn't have a shirt on. I didn't see the guy. All I saw was the bullets on the floor >> like >> the bullets from you know when they released >> wearing shorts pants. >> I think he was going on. Honestly, I was just looking at his stupid ass [ __ ] looking at you. Was he looking? >> He was looking at me. >> Looking right at you. was looking at me. And so I I when I saw her, I couldn't say anything. I was in shock cuz I can't believe he actually [ __ ] killed her. >> Oh, when we were talking in the know room, he told me um she told me that yesterday he told her that the only reason why he hasn't killed her yet is because of my brother. >> Okay. When was this? >> That was yesterday. They had went to Desert and she said, and that they were drinking, you know, yada yada. And then that's when he started with his nudes like always. And then that's when he started accusing her. Mhm. >> And so that's where the fight originated from. And he said that to her. >> You said that to her? >> Said that to her over there. >> So you witnessed him say that? >> No, I didn't witness it. She was telling me what was happening cuz I wasn't here. I was in Georgia. Um he also she told me that he >> I was like arguing with her at the store that they were at loud. And so that's she was like, "Okay, let's go." All they left. That's when I was fighting. No. Um, this firearm you have, can you describe what that looked like? >> I didn't see it. That's That's why I thought it was a big gun cuz I didn't see anything in his hand. All I saw was the casings. >> How big were the casings? Would you say >> like a tiny one? Yeah. >> Okay. Um, >> but it was really loud. Not sure. >> Do you know if he owns any farms? And if so, how many? >> He can't hold any farms because he has a criminal record because she was 18. So, he wasn't able to buy one. My mom. It was under my mom. >> Okay. So, your mom has mom. >> And she had it in the safe. She had it in a safe and I'm assuming I don't know why she would give him knowing how psychotic he is. >> You know the code? >> I don't know the code. She never gave it to me. She was going to give it to me for protection, but I never I don't like gun so I >> What kind of gun does your mom have? >> It's a regular handgun. >> You know what color it was? >> Black. I think black. I think it might have had a color. >> Yellow. >> Okay. So now what led up? >> So you go upstairs, right? You see your dad and your mom. What do you do from there? >> I started screaming at him. What the [ __ ] >> Did he say anything to you to make? >> He started screaming at me, telling me that he was cheating on her >> with that guy that she was telling me about that >> she was cheating on him or he >> that she was cheating on her boyfriend and that Yeah. She was saying he was friend and she was saying that she's she's putting on me. He cheated on me. I told him um at that point I didn't say nothing back and I was like what the [ __ ] Like what? >> I was just I saw him. >> Okay. So then you saying this at what point did you leave? Does he say anything? Do you threaten you? >> Do I leave? >> Besides what point you ended up out here? >> I freaked out. He went back to the room >> when he was screaming. He didn't ever threaten you though. >> No. It was >> Was he talking to himself? Was he saying anything? yelling at me about the situation >> about Yeah. >> So, he wasn't he went back to >> talking to himself at all or anything like that? >> No, he went back to his room. >> I went to my brother's room. I got him out and he went out the house and went to the neighbors. >> Your brother? Was your brother witnessed anything? >> He said he might have hurt. >> After hours of tense negotiations, the standoff finally came to an end. Following repeated pleas from officers, Jose made the decision to surrender peacefully. As he walked out of the house, officers quickly took him into custody, [music] bringing an end to a dangerous ordeal that had kept an entire neighborhood on edge. But while the standoff was over, the investigation was only beginning. Officers still had to enter the home and discover what had happened inside. [music] >> He's coming out. >> Okay, he says he's coming out. >> Okay, Jose. PUT YOUR HANDS OUT. PUT YOUR HANDS OUT. >> DON'T MOVE. [ __ ] Go this way. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. Yo, let's move him off right Yeah. >> Yep. >> Yo, you have gloves? >> Yeah. >> Grab that round right there. That just came out of his pocket. Take that [ __ ] off. Take it off. Mhm. Go in there. Put that in the evidence bag. With Jose finally in custody, officers made their way inside the home for the first time. As they searched the residence, they made the heartbreaking discovery they had feared from the very beginning. Upstairs, inside a bathroom, they found Jose's wife dead from gunshot wounds. The standoff was over, but the homicide investigation was only just beginning as detectives secured the home and began documenting every piece of evidence left behind. Following his arrest, Joseé Manuel Otero Fontinez was charged with firstdegree premeditated murder along with additional allegations connected to the confrontation with police. Nearly 2 years later, the criminal case was still making its way through the Oyola County court system, and Jose remained in custody without bond. As of August 2026, I could find no public record showing that a jury trial had concluded or that a final sentence had been imposed, meaning the case remains unresolved in court and Jose is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
