So ba basically we got a call and uh from what we got the call it seems like someone was trying to rob the bank. Uh something about you passing a note to the teller something to that effect. Uh can you just tell me what's going on or Yeah. On January 7th, 2022, Black Panther director Ryan Cougler was briefly detained by Atlanta police after a Bank of America teller mistakenly suspected a robbery. Cougler discreetly handed the teller a note requesting a withdrawal along with his ID. Unbeknownst to him, the teller alerted authorities. The bank later apologized, calling the incident a mistake. Let's watch the video. All right. I came on scene. I saw this vehicle just parked right here. So, I swoop around. Yeah. And I was like, it's just kind of odd. Anyway, make a long story short, that's the driver that's inside there. He said description that was given out is the male that's on the inside that's trying to rob the bank. He said that he's a movie producer for a high-end movie and they're just here to do a transaction to leave. That's them. That's Yeah. So, um when he gave me the description, I asked him if it's the same guy that's in there. He said, "Yeah." Once he was walk once he walked out, he he looked at him and said, "Yeah, that's the guy who's the producer." And then that's it. So I detained the driver. That's the passengers from the back seat. Wait, they're claiming that the the producer dude is is the guy. Yeah, he's in the back. Yeah. Okay. He's right there. He's right here. So I don't know whether or not he's um he was passing trying to cash a check or anything, but according to radio, he was trying to take money. Yeah. So y'all talk to Italian? They talking to him right now. So I just separate them at this point. Check, bro. Do what? Check. Somebody take my glasses off my face. Panic attack. I mean, I got to be honest with you, man. I can't believe this, man. Is that my Is that my family? Baby nurse. Y'all have her detained right now? Who? The baby nurse, the Filipino woman that was in the back seat. Y'all have her detained right now? Yes, she's being detained at this point. All right. Uh, can you uh did the officers explain what's going on while we're on here? Not really, man. All right. So, we got a call. Basically ask me if I passed a note. Yeah. It's probably been one of these doors. So, ba basically, we got a call and uh from what we got the call, it seems like someone was trying to rob the bank. Uh something about you passing a note to the teller, something to that effect. Uh can you just tell me what's going on or Yeah, bro. It's a It's a It's a medical assistant that works in my house that prefers me to pay in cash. Every time I make a withdrawal to pay her, you know, because it's a large amount. She works a lot. Yeah. You know, if I if I don't if I don't write down on the note how much I went out and then I don't let it ran through the money counter right there at the desk, the whole bank ends up looking at me cuz they just going through the money account and I don't feel safe. I don't feel safe getting money out like that. So, every time I go to withdraw it, you know, I put that I put the amount the account I want to take out of and I put my own card in and then I and then they usually take I mean like always just just get the get the money from, you know what I'm saying? I I I don't understand. So you you make Well, that's like I said, that's the reason why we're out here and that's the reason why we detained everybody because we didn't know exactly what was going on. So you make I was trying I mean I got to be honest with you like y never asked me what was going on. Yeah. Well, unfortunately we in those situation. Where's the ID in this pocket? In this is easy ID in this pocket. Just hang tight. Just one sec, bro. One sec, bro. One sec, bro. Sir, so the reason that we don't Give me a sec, man. I got you. Hey, do you need to get some fresh air? You need to take the mask off for a second to get us some fresh air. Okay. I got 5 month old baby. I don't want to take my mask off because he's not giving any Well, so I said to hold on, man. According to he's trying to explain that the reason why the note is what it is because he's making a withdrawal from Excuse me. I think for a large amount. So like he's always doing this. I don't know. Okay. So this the thing the teller she started to freak out. So she didn't even match the accounts with his ID that she gave him. So I need to double check to see if that's even the account, his account. You see what I'm saying? Cuz if that is his account, then what is he doing that wrong? You see what I'm saying? It's the note beside the exact beside the note. So, can you get we just uh while they're getting you guys out of handcuffs, hold um I I I stated to to the officers that arrest me that had that had that Glocks out. Yeah. That I was pulling money out my own account. I understand. I I put the I put my own bank card in there before they let you in in the back. You know what I'm saying? So So we have to confirm that. You got to understand, we can't we don't come out because of the seriousness of the call out. We don't just come out and unfortunately in a situation like that, you don't get the benefit of the doubt. We detain and then we ask questions later. Um that's what exactly what I went inside for. You can you can take them out the other people with a handcuff. Yeah, I got it. So that's why we come out with weapons. That's why you're detained and then we ask questions later because of the nature of the call. So um Say it again, sir. Um, it's it's nothing it's nothing for me for me to say, man. Like, I just I got to get all y Yeah, that's fine. That's fine. Yeah, that's a problem. Um, you got y'all got cards? No, we don't have cards, but we'll give you something, man. If you got something to write on, um, do you have anything? I'm not reaching into that grabbing nothing with y'all. Give me something to write down on. Y'all can write down, see if he can give you some paperwork and then you can do that something. I'm sure you have some stuff in the car that you can write down. shooting, bro. Like, y'all just came a had guns drawn on me in a while, bro. You understand what I'm saying? I'm trying to get my own money off my own account. You know, you know what I mean? Like, like I I I got to I got to I don't know if she ever had been arrested before. You understand what I'm saying? My team been arrested before. You know what I'm saying? Like, like it's a it's a it's a it's got to keep it's a major problem, man. in the in the officers that was arresting. I was trying to communicate that with them. You know what I mean? I got I got I reached for my badge. I got my ID hanging on my head. I got you. You understand what I'm saying? It's hanging on my head. You feel me? Like it's not like I got it in my bank card. You feel me? Yeah. Like I But do you do you do you understand where we're coming from? Do you understand that we're not We didn't just show up here and put draw guns on here. We showed up because a car was came in. I I I understand. Yeah. Somebody [ __ ] up. Yeah. That's all I know. Mhm. Right now. You know what I'm You know what I'm saying? I got you. Um I know it's I'm out here trying to make a movie. Mhm. You know what I'm saying? In in in Atlanta. You know what I mean? I didn't had to write letters to Stacy Abrams for the whole internet to understand why why I'm here. You know what I'm saying? I'm my workers employing a thousand people here. You feel me? And I'm trying to take care of some personal business and I get two hammers drawn on my back turned, bro. You understand what I'm saying? So, so I I don't know who made what call, who did what, but I just had guns drawn for taking money out my own account. You understand what I'm saying? I got you and my team and my baby nurses getting thrown in the back of the car, bro. Handcuff. You understand what I'm saying? It's a problem. I need I need everybody. You know what I'm saying? And I just find out who made that call in there. It came from the bank. I need to find out who made the call. That's fine. That's fine. You have a right to do so. Yeah, I got I got But I just want you to understand what what what what my sergeant advised you on the nature of the call. Just that's all I need you to understand. Have you ever considered speaking to them before you make a transaction like that? Have you ever had something like this happen? Have I ever been arrested? No, no, no, no. Wait, what? Listen to what he's saying. Have you ever No, I am listening. Okay. Have you ever considered speaking to them about what it is you're trying to do prior to doing So, can I explain something to you, bro? I went to CVS out here the other day to get a vaccine. I came outside like somebody like was smoke in the in the in the in the parking lot. You understand what I'm saying? While I was getting a vaccine. Yeah. I'm not trying to [ __ ] around out here, bro. Like I'm not saying out loud how much money I'm taking. That's why I'm writing down. I'm not talking about speaking to somebody like that. I'm saying, "Hey, can I speak to a manager in an office somewhere? Have you ever considered doing that? I'm going consider it now that y'all [ __ ] drew villains on y'all trying to take money out. But up to the up to this point at every Bank of America I ever gone to in my entire [ __ ] life just never happened. You understand what I'm saying? You understand? So So y'all explaining your perspective, right? Y'all the ones with guns and vests. You understand what I'm saying? Mhm. What's What's my perspective? What's my perspective? I know you at the at the at the bank. She never said it was a [ __ ] problem, bro. Like I like I I said, "Hey, is that going to be okay with you?" She said, "Yeah." I put my own car in, put my own pin in. She asked to see my ID. I gave it to her. Then she goes in the back and I'm waiting for the for for the And then people keep coming out. Hey, they taking care of you. They taking care of everything. You know, no taking a little while. Next thing I I hear [ __ ] Glocks. Yeah. I hear Glocks getting pulled out. That's what I hear. Hear Glocks. I hear Glocks getting pulled out from unholstering. Hey sir, can I talk to you for a minute? Mhm. You understand what I'm saying? Mhm. You So you you see my perspective? Yeah. Yeah. So, so I mean that every how many options you got on the It's not five. So, can you uh give them the case number? Yeah. I don't What's the case number? Say it again, sir. They're not giving all ID. Do we have any more of their property? Yeah, right here. Give it give them all the time. No one was holding anything from you. No. Can Can I just go ahead? Take your time. Lundy, can you give me a case number? Y'all are withholding [ __ ] from you right now, right? Where are we with? Cuz I call Atlanta and I say, "Hey, Officer Fernandez. Who the [ __ ] is that?" Y got first initials on y on your names, right? But they not on here. They didn't write it down. They not on here. Let's put the first initials on here. Jackie problem number. Okay. Yes, I am. We're giving you a case number that identifies every single person that was on here. We got camera. Okay. Yeah. I got I got you. I just know you got a very common name. Fernando. Yes. And I'm going call Metro Atlanta say officer Fernandez. And they probably got more than one. I got you. Okay. All right. Well, we're going to give you everything that's associated with this call. Everyone's recording. There's no question about what happened. All right. Put the case number on that same thing. Yeah, I'm under there. Yeah. Hey, what's the case number? What's the case number? That's what I'm trying. I'm writing it down right now. What is it? 737. What's the badge number? Huh? What's the badge number? Yeah. I don't know what to say either. She said it. All right. So, um, you have any other questions or concern before we go? He can show you as well, but because you got pain as well, I just want to explain the situation to you as well. Uh, basically, we got a call uh from I believe the teller saying that uh someone slipped a note. uh basically made it appear as if the bank was being robbed by somebody. They give description and things like that. Um that's why we came out and we detained everybody like I explained to him. Um unfortunately in those situations we take an abundance of caution cuz we don't know what's going on. Um that's why you were detained. Once we figured out that they called and she she's saying that I guess she wasn't speaking and that's and passed her note and that's why she was she was nervous and stalling. She white or black. I have no idea. I didn't talk to her. She's black. Okay. Yeah. I didn't talk to her. My officer spoke to her. Um I just went in to speak to her or to find my officer to find out what exactly was going on. As soon as they told me that it was his bank account that you know um I was like, "Hey, that obviously it's not what they're saying or what it appear to be that they were saying." So I came out and told him to take the guys all out of handcuffs. Um I apologize for that. Uh he's got every every officer's name out here that was involved. Uh the incident number. Um if you need anything out, do you have any questions? One more thing. Yeah. You need to get her number. Can y'all go get her name? I mean her name. Cuz she she's a part of this, too. Yeah. We'll uh I still got to make the transaction. Oh [ __ ] We'll ask them. Um Okay. We can't force her to give us anything, right? Uh but at that point it's between you all and the bank. Okay. Uh but we'll we'll we'll gladly ask. Any other questions? You know like it gives us like shaking. I understand. I understand. It is a frightening situation. Um it's a it's an uncomfortable situation for us because we're we're coming to under the impression that this bank is getting robbed. So you got to understand that we take all the precautions necessary. A robber without any a robber without any gun or any weapon. Excuse me. a robber without any weapon. Yeah. Okay. Um unfortunately most most banks get robbed in that that manner. Um most banks don't um have a gun pointed at them. They pass a note and say, "Hey, I have this. Uh give me this or I'm going to you know." So I'm not um I'm just telling you what it is. I mean I can't you know like I thought you telling me to move the car. Yeah. And I and I explained to you, no, I'm saying when you approach I saw you approaching the car, so I'm thinking I said, "Well, he going to make me move the car." I know. I know what your first goddamn ball game. Okay. Yeah. Y'all have any other questions? I appreciate your your Yeah, that's no problem, man. No problem, man. No, it's totally up to you if you want to speak for the gentleman whatsoever. If not, that's fine. It was a misunderstanding. Is that where I'm going? I had just walked through the door. Gotcha. Got you. So, basically, it was a misunderstanding pretty much. And he's he's on a different level as far as hide and see of his anger and everything. He's very calm at this point, but he's really upset. Totally get it. Um, so if you want to say something, that's fine. If not, that's fine as well. And then I'm going have my Can I give you a report number? Um, case number. Sir, this is the branch manager. I just came out. This is the teller information right here. This is the branch model like I told you and this was the the person that was in charge before she came to work. We walked through the door. I walked through the door after the incident. However, it doesn't I I I'm going to have my market leader um reach out to you. His name is Josh Roberts. He runs the West Atlanta area. Um after reading the note that you pass this young lady, she is fairly new. I did coach her because it could be very well a misunderstanding. You were only asked for your cash to be discreetly given to you. You didn't want it. And I do apologize sincerely for myself being who you are. You're a young black man for two for Bank of America. I can't explain how that happened. Uh she is she's with child and she's emotionally high. She's going through her own thing and it has nothing to do with you. And I think it just hit her differently. And I do apologize because she wasn't seasoned. And when I walked in, it was already in motion. The police walked in right behind me. So I before I could assess the situation and put a hand around it, they were locked. They were putting you in handcuffs. So I do apologize sincerely. Um I do ask that Mr. Roberts, I would like you to get his information if that's okay. He would like to reach out to you as well. His name is Joshua Roberts. It's the It's the He said the market. What does he say? He runs the whole area of West Atlanta for Bank of America. Is that Is that okay? Can I give you that information? Okay. Let me go get my phone cuz I don't have it on me and I'll bring it right back and give it to you. Okay. Do you want him to go inside or you want him to stay outside? It's up to you. It's up to I'm just trying to I'm just trying to I still got You still need You still need to pay. I could take care of my employee. Well, this is what we're going to do. I'm going to take care of him. Okay. If you could just hang back so he have a comfort level if that's okay. They can hang back a few minutes or turn up to the gentleman. I'm going to bring you in my office and I'll take care of your transaction for you. Here. Hey, babe. Excuse my wife. Yes. Hey. Um what what she's trying to do at this point is to uh personally take care of him. Yeah. And um she want us to stay by if that's if he feel comfortable. If not, you know, we can just leave and whatnot. So it's totally up to him. Yeah. I want to hang out. I know. I want to talk to her anyway. lose home. Um I I'm going be honest with you like I ain't the police and make me feel comfortable. I got you. I'm just I'm trying to advocate for you. I just I just want No, I I just want my I just want my money. Yes, sir. By all means. Yeah. So, we don't need to be here. You don't have to stay. Okay. Thank you. Ma'am, you're the manager. I am the financial center manager assigned today. This is not my location. Okay. When you finish out with him, I I'll be inside to talk to you. All right. Okay. So, officer, you wrote this down? Yeah. No, I didn't. Wait, I wrote down the badge number, the first name, last name, the case report number. She wrote this down. And then she wrote this down for you. Okay. You I don't have This is not my location, but I You put that You You should have pushing like phone [ __ ] You going to take I could do either one. I you come in for somebody to come back. All she's trying to do right now is just to make sure um everything smoothly because she said that the the female, you know, she's with with child and she was Yeah. And she's not um seasoned as far as to understand what cuz she said after she saw the note and everything, it made sense for what he's trying to do. Well, she took it. She took I mean, it makes perfect sense. I mean, the problem is like that and that's what I'm going to talk to her about. Like you got to you got to talk you got you got to I I feel like that's something basic, you know? If someone's giving you their account information, hey, this is the name on the account. Well, clearly they're not trying to rob you. Right. Right. So, that should be the first thing that that is that is clarified. Hey, if you want to call because you may think that someone's someone's someone's got his someone held up out here, you know, hey, we'll come out and we'll talk to them, you know, but our approach is different from the get. You know, the problem is when you're talking about, hey, they passed a note, you know, asking for this money and you know, you're making it seem like you're being wrong. So, I thought I thought it was like a check fraud thing. Yeah. And then, you know, but I I spoke to the gentleman. I said, I don't know what's going on. See, know what you're telling me is legit, but at this point, I just wanted to detail and I get you're upset. I'm like, you know, I understand it, but you got to understand that ain't that's that's got nothing to do with us. We're not going to, you know, he's he's a why they pull guns on me while I'm trying because we're not going to try to figure out what's going on when when we're being told that you're possibly trying to rob his bank, right? We'll figure that out once you're in handcuff. Mhm. Absolutely. So, and like I told him, I I you know, I understand where he's coming from, but you know, you have to understand what you said. You know what I mean? Yep. Yeah, man. Appreciate it. Hey, I didn't mean to push you out to the side. You know, it was we didn't need all of us there. He was already upset, you know, that you know, with the situation. Oh, yeah. I explained that to him. Appreciate it. All right. You want me to hang out with you or you good? Oh, I'm good. All right. Let me just stand by. And like I said, it speaks to the manager. Yeah. She she she's upset too that this this basically when cuz she said after she saw the note, she was like, "You're just trying to get money off of his account." See, and at what point did I want to say at what point does somebody cuz the guy says that the other people were coming out and telling him, "Hey, we're you know, they were stalling." You know, they're like, "Hey, someone's they're taking care of that's what they that's what they're trying to do to stall." So why at some point who says, "Hey, someone needs to look at this. What do we got?" You know, and why don't you update, you know, hey, disregard, you know, uh, this guy's just trying to do a legitimate trans something, you know, but yeah, that's crazy. All right, Sergeant, I pull back in service. The Bank of America apologized to Kougler and likely reached a settlement. As mad as Cougler was, he said that it should never have happened to anyone and he has already moved on from the experience. What do you think of the events? Let us know in the comments section.
