Yeah, >> I will you. >> This is 30-year-old Ashley Bokanra who got a message from a man she thought she knew. So, she got in her car and drove near an apartment complex believing she was about to have a private meeting with Daniel Gonzalez. But what if the person texting her was never Daniel at all? Because when Ashley arrived, two women were already waiting for her. And by then, it was too late to turn back. It was the morning of August 11th, 2022 at around 10:05 a.m. when 30-year-old Ashley Bokenra left home after receiving a series of messages that appeared to come from Daniel Gonzalez. To Ashley, it likely looked like a private meetup with someone she knew. Maybe a conversation no one else was supposed to know about. Maybe answers to questions that were already hidden somewhere. But whatever she believed she was driving toward it definitely wasn't dangerous. She arrived at an apartment complex of Buford Drive expecting Daniel. But Daniel wasn't there. Instead, who came up to her were a 27year-old woman identified as Antetta Stevens and a 17-year-old woman named Janine Gonzalez. According to investigators, Antetta had allegedly used Daniel's phone to message Ashley herself, posing as him to get her there. >> She probably in the boats. It's the boats. So, you in the boats? >> So, Ashley hadn't arrived for a meeting. She had just walked straight into an ambush. What began as a confrontation jumped straight into violence. Witnesses and later statements with video evidence showed a bar tall fight involving hair pulling, punches, dragging, and repeated blows. [music] [music] There was no break or a cool off where they could stop to talk it out or even shout. Once they started attacking her, the violence only escalated, and Janine would later admit to kicking Ashley during the attack in her interrogation. But right now, Ashley was outnumbered, overwhelmed, and badly overpowered. The damage was much more serious than it first appeared. Ashley suffered fractured ribs, a lacerated liver, bite marks on her cheek and arm, and repeated trauma to her torso. She struggled to breathe, repeatedly coughed, and was already showing signs that something inside her body had gone terribly wrong. Around 100 p.m., officers responded to reports of a fight. The calls were made by a third party, but at that moment, police did not yet realize they were standing at the beginning of a homicide investigation. Ashley said she didn't want the police involved, likely because of the infidelity involved, so no immediate charges were pressed. you requesting to meet with me or did the nurse call in your behalf because they were required to? >> Yeah, the nurse called on behalf. >> So you do not want the police involved? >> Yeah, because like honestly it just all happened off. >> So what happened? >> Well, I right now was my fiance's birthday. So, I went to go run some parents to go, you know, grab them the cake and stuff like that. So, I was outside waiting for my um Uber. I see these two females walking around. They look kind of iffy like they was like, you know, getting into something. I didn't think anything of it. And then they started me. All I hear is that she's description and then out of nowhere they just came in and packed me up. I don't know anything like that. So, you are saying that some two females has randomly attacked you and this is nothing to do with you sleeping with one of your employees. Just so you know, the police the police were called out there and we did respond because somebody that works at that apartment complex went and called in and we have already talked to both parties and they told us that she found out you were sleeping with her with her fiance. Y'all went outside and had words and y'all got into a mutual fight is what the information we have. Does that sound about right? >> Well, they got the reverse of that because that's not what happened to me cuz I was literally on their way with my cat. So, unless they were looking for somebody or what, but sorry, keep talking. But yeah, that just >> So, you don't know anything about that. You were outside waiting for a cat. Females randomly attack you for no reason. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Like literally that's what they said. >> Okay. What's your name and day of birth? So I can document and talk to you. >> My name is Ashley. Ashley and then your last name is spelled B O C A N E G R. >> Do you have a license out of out of Georgia? >> Oh, yeah. >> No, that's fine. I was just going to look you up, get all your information off of that. Give me one second just so I can document. I talked to you and you said you don't want the police involved and uh you don't Okay. To those around her, it may have looked like a violent dispute that had ended, but the most dangerous damage wasn't what police could see that afternoon. So, how did what seemed like a private meeting become a deadly setup? To understand that, we need to look at the relationships behind it. Because this fight didn't just begin in that parking lot. It had started long before Ashley ever arrived that morning. From the outside, Ashley Bokenra looked like someone living an ordinary life. She was 30 years old, married, and by most appearances, simply living through everyday routines with her own family and responsibilities. Nothing about her life suggested she would soon become the center of a deadly confrontation. But behind the scenes, Ashley had become involved with Daniel Gonzalez. According to investigators, the two had been in a romantic relationship. The problem was that Daniel was also engaged to Antetta [music] Stevens. That meant two committed relationships were now tangled together in secrecy, betrayal, and deception. Investigators later learned tensions had been building for some time. One key moment that Janine [music] mentioned happened during a grocery run. Antoneta had asked Daniel to meet her during his work break, but he said he couldn't go. Later, they met up with Daniel and Ashley exiting the very same store. For Antetta, that may have confirmed more than cheating. It may have felt like rejection, humiliation, and being lied to directly. From there, emotions appeared to intensify. Jealousy, anger, the feeling of being replaced while someone else was being chosen over you. Prosecutors believed Antonetta and Daniel's relationship had already been strained before Ashley entered the picture. And now everything was reaching a breaking point. But instead of confronting Daniel alone, authorities said Antetta chose another route. She allegedly used Daniel's phone and began messaging Ashley while pretending to be him. The texts arranged a private meeting at the apartment complex on Buford Drive. And that detail changed everything. This wasn't a random fight anymore. Someone had created the meeting first. Also pulled into the conflict was Janine Gonzalez, Daniel's 17-year-old sister. Whether through loyalty, anger, or taking sides, Janine became part of what happened next. But don't feel bad yet because she knew exactly what was wrong and kept laughing even during her interrogation. >> Yeah. >> Where do you go to school at? Oh, >> in college? >> Um, I'm a senior. >> Senior in high school. >> Mhm. >> Okay. You're just visiting? >> Yeah. >> Okay, I got you. Um, where where's your home address at? >> I would have spelled that wrong. >> And that's you said. >> Mhm. What's the zip code there? >> Do you guys drive all the way down here? You guys flew? >> Uh, I took flight. >> A flight? Okay. >> Yeah, I come here every summer. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> It's rough winters up there. >> Hm. >> Rough winters up there? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Hold on. You were born in >> Yeah. >> Okay. You ever visit the city though? >> Mm-m. >> No. >> Not yet. Not yet. What about Albany? >> Albany? No. >> No. >> Canadam. >> You're right there. >> I know. I know. I know. >> You ever been to Niagara Falls? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. On the New York side, >> I think. Yeah. Yeah, I have. >> I heard it was much nicer earlier in Toronto. >> Yeah. I've seen pictures, but I've never been. >> It's nice. >> Yeah. >> I was about to judge you if you were like, "I never went to Niger Falls." I'm be like, "Girl, did you just leave your house?" Like, [laughter] >> oh my god. I'm like, "No, no, no." >> And you drive. >> Do I drive? No. [clears throat] >> No. Okay. >> She's She's from New York. Of course not. >> But no, up New York City makes sense, but upstate you need a car up there. >> Do you guys don't have like public transportation though? >> Yeah. >> Buses. >> Oh, okay. >> I don't know. It's like weird over here. It's like you have to drive >> over Now it's different. >> Yeah. I've never been to Buffalo. So, is it like the city? >> It's Buffalo is very small. So, it's mostly neighborhoods wherever you go in expressways. >> Okay. >> It's not really, you know, >> you got to chain your tires. >> Yeah. Everywhere. >> Dang. >> Yeah. >> That's why I moved down south. Like I came from Jersey, so >> Oh, >> and I can't take the cold. Before Jersey, I was in Chicago. So, >> Okay. >> Yeah. I hate the cold. So, came down here, not south enough though. Still gets cold down here. >> Yeah, I know. >> You ever been in a winter down here? >> No. >> No. Okay. Yeah, it gets bad. Not as bad as Buffalo, but >> right, >> it gets cold. >> Um, but yeah, so I just kind of read you uh your rights just cuz we're we're here at the police station. It's just something you always hear on TV and cops and in the movies. I'm sure you heard it a million times. >> Mhm. >> So, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have a lawyer with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any question if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you'll still have the right to stop answering at any time. You also have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to a lawyer. Do you understand each of these rights I explained to you? >> Mhm. >> And having these rights in ma in mind, do you wish to talk to us now? >> Yeah. >> Yes. Um yeah. So just just go through basically since I wasn't there and I'm I'm playing catchup basically. So what happened? So like let me start to where it leaded. >> Okay. >> How it all. Okay. So like since I've been down here, they they haven't been on good terms. So you know, arguments back to back. So, like we just came back from Florida like not too long ago from her mom's wedding >> and >> we left on bad terms with everybody cuz my brother got into a you know incident with her stepdad. >> So, ever since that happened and we left Florida, it just been rocky rockier. It's just been worse arguments. So, yeah. Sorry, I just c >> You're fine. Yeah. earlier. [laughter] Okay. So, like you know that arguing or whatever. So, my brother him being a man cheats like always, you know, he's feeling less than. He thinks it's okay to cheat. So, you know, he tells me So, he tells me who is he cheating with and stuff. Now, me and my step sister, I mean, not my step sister, my sister-in-law, we're very close. Like, so close. Like, you understand? Like, she's more of a sister to me than my brother's a brother to me, you know? >> Yeah. >> So, like we're very close. So, once he told me, I was just like to tell her. >> It's girl [clears throat] code, you know. >> Yes. Right. So, especially when right after he told her after he told me what what he was doing, he wanted to do it with her. So, I was just like, I'm about to tell her, so she won't do it with him. So, I let a few days go by cuz I wasn't sure. I didn't want to stir up the pot cuz I already know they had problems. >> So, I'm like, maybe it'll come to light before I have to say anything. Obviously, it did, but I still told her. So, two days prior before this day. Um, we chilling. She was working and Daniel did something to her to make her upset. So, we were talking or whatever and I was just like, "Oh, I forgot to tell you." No, I didn't forget, but I still, you know, >> so I was like, um, tell her what happened. He explained, cheated or whatever. She was like, "Oh, really?" She's upset. Whatever. I was like, "Don't tell him that you cuz he's going to be mad at me." >> Right. >> Okay. So after that um he explained how the girl looked to me though and you know curlier Puerto Rican skinny girl. So I was like so then I explained it to Anetta. So the next day after that we went to the store >> and that is what makes this case hit so hard. Ashley likely believed she was meeting one person in private. She had no reason to expect two people waiting to ambush her instead. She drove there expecting a conversation. But by the time Ashley stepped out of that car, the decision had already been made for her. After the fight ended, Ashley Boenegra made it back home. But the woman who returned was badly injured. She was visibly shaken, weak, and in obvious pain. Breathing had become difficult. Every movement seemed to cost her. At first, some of the injuries may not have looked fatal from the outside, but internally the damage was already severe. Ashley called her husband asking for help. But even during the call, she kept coughing and was not able to form full sentences. When he heard what had happened, he immediately left work and rushed home. By then, Ashley's condition was worsening [music] quickly. She was struggling to breathe in intense pain and at one point began blood before going to the hospital. All of which were signs that something inside her body had gone terribly wrong. For her husband, it was a horrifying scene. He was trying to help the woman he loved without fully understanding how serious the injuries truly were. According to the case details, he also did not know the full truth about the affair that had led to the whole confrontation. of it came out and they tried to revive her and she came back and then she went out again and it was just she wasn't coming back. >> And when she called you on the phone, did she tell you who did this to her? >> She told me two females. >> She recognize them? >> No. >> Did she describe them? >> One was a um darkkinned uh heavy set woman. And then one with a light skin. That's all she said. I asked her, "Who are they? Do you know them? Have you seen them before?" "No, I've never seen before. I have no clue who they are." She said, "They just look suspicious." You know, she called me and she was just like really out of breath. So, she trying to get it out. She keeps telling me like calm down. What happened? What happened? I just got jumped. I just got I got angry. All right, I'm on my way. I let my job know. I left. I came home. She's on the bed just like gas. I get a dress. We leave. We go straight to foright. They uh do what they do. They scan her oxygen, IV, um, all your medicine, whatever they could do to make her feel better. And then the doctor told me that she was like, they did the scan and they had this pool of blood by her kidney, you know, and that's when they decided to fly her out here. I I didn't know to that extent. She was banged up. She was banged up. But what got her was cuz she told me all right she had gotten bit on her cheek. She like she bit me on my cheek. She bit me in my arm. She they kicked me in my rib while the big heavy set one was on top of her. The other one was kicking her in her rib cage. >> Okay. >> And obviously that's what caused it, you know. And >> did she say that they were using any weapons? >> She didn't say anything about weapons. They were fighting. She said it happened so fast that she didn't have a chance to do anything. >> It was just they just ganged up on her. And I just don't know why. I just don't know why, you know, because we only been back in Georgia. We recently just moved back less than a year ago. >> When was it? >> We moved back in December of 2021. >> Okay. >> After my mom passed. My mom passed in November, right before Thanksgiving. We moved back in December to be close to family. Eight months later, nine months later, this happened. And it's like there's no reason like I I I don't even get it, you know? Why would anybody want to do that? >> You know, it was like random. She was going out to get me a birthday cake today. birthday, she's going to feed me a birthday cake. If this happens, you know, and we have a sevenyear-old son and I have to go to my son and break through this and that's going to be the most difficult thing in the world. >> I don't know how to do it. >> Can only imagine. Did she ever discuss any issues with anybody around? >> No, she started work on the core. right next door to our party congress and she never she will you know complain and as investigators later pieced together the relationships behind the attack. Police also spoke with Ashley's father-in-law who appeared to know more about certain hidden tensions than Ashley's husband did. It suggested some people around the situation >> called me and she told me that I'm sorry that Ashley was talking to a guy in her job. Okay. Now, supposedly they were just friends, but the guy's girlfriend got jealous about it. So I think his name she said he might be supposedly he lives in the complex too. >> Who told you this information? >> My my daughter. >> How did she know about this? >> Cuz they were best friends. >> So she she confessed it to her. >> Can we get your daughter? >> But they didn't tell because they she didn't want to. >> Can we get your daughter's cell phone number? >> Yes. had seen warning signs long before that day, but by then, none of it could change what was happening. In the early hours of August 12th, Ashley was taken for emergency medical care and was admitted to the hospital at around 3:19 a.m. Doctors moved quickly, performing emergency interventions and placing a breathing tube as her condition deteriorated. But despite their efforts, they could not save her. Ashley died from the injuries she suffered during the assault, including major internal trauma. What began as a fight scene had now become case overnight. Once Ashley Bocanra died, detectives returned to what had first seemed like a simple fight call and began treating it as a homicide investigation. The questions now were no longer who fought, but about who planned it, who participated, and what really happened before Ashley ever arrived. Police first had to break the news to Daniel Gonzalez. According to case details, he was left shaken and in disbelief as investigators explained that Ashley was dead and that the confrontation centered around messages sent [music] from his own phone. Then detectives turned the digital evidence. Doorbell cameras and nearby surveillance helped map movements [music] around the apartment complex. But the most damaging evidence came from the phones themselves. Investigators recovered text messages sent from Daniel's phone arranging the meeting with Ashley. prosecutors said were actually sent by Antetta Stevens. They also found video recorded on Janine Gonzalez's phone showing parts of the assault. The footage captured Ashley being attacked. Her hair was pulled. She was punched, kicked, and overwhelmed during the confrontation. All she could say was just to leave her alone as she sat in the mess. During questioning, Janine tried to minimize her role. She claimed she did not want to put her hands on Ashley because Ashley was so small and said she did not know about the messages used to lure her there >> in too much. He's like, "Oh my, [clears throat] okay." So, I don't know what happened after she left, but literally right after she left, a third party called the police. They came, you know, made a report and then after that it was over, whatever. And then just know you guys came. Yeah, that's that's all I know. >> When you guys uh fought, how long did that fight last? >> Uh 3 2 minutes. >> Okay. >> Yeah, it was it was early, >> but yeah, that's about it. Uh >> have you ever been in fights before? >> Me? Yeah. >> Yeah. Oh. Okay. You seem kind of athletic. You play sports when you're in school. >> No. No. No. No. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah. Do I really look athletic? >> Yeah, you look athletic. You got some some shoulders on you. >> Why would you do that? >> You don't know if I care about these shoulders. >> Well, I apologize if you are. >> They're they're a little No, I know. >> They're fine. >> But um so what happened in the fight that she she hurt you? I see some scratch me on your neck. Do I I don't No, I don't think No, she didn't hurt me. >> No. What happened? >> No, it wasn't no jumping. I didn't know. >> Oh, >> so tell tell us about that. Like, how did that happen? >> It was very vivid. >> She so bad. You know, fights are just like a blur when it happens. But >> where was she? I know you said you you said earlier she came looking for him. >> She She came because he was moving. He was getting kicked out and she wanted to be a little writer. >> Mhm. when she knows she a side chick and she got a husband at home. Girl, >> I know she's breaking up a happy home, but where was she at? Like, >> no, she has a husband as well. >> Yeah, I know. But where was she at? >> Um, what do you mean? >> You said she came and look for him. Where was she at? How did y'all How did y'all make contact with her? >> Through messages like just like, you know, we seen her. >> But where did you meet up? >> She was She was in our complex. I guess she lives like right near us. >> Mhm. Like I think like there's like two sides of the complex. You know that hill? >> Yeah. >> It goes around and like when it goes up and around there's another complex that look just like the same side. >> So did she knock on the door at first or you guys just saw her outside? >> Outside. She didn't she didn't knock. She didn't get the chance to. >> Okay. >> Cuz like oh you got this coming. I'm about to be her. So yeah. >> Did you guys start yelling at her before you guys approached her or how'd that go down? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Tell us about that. It wasn't really all. It was just like, "Yeah, and you came to see my and then it was just fine after that." She knew what it was cuz she she got ready to, you know, and it was just fighting. >> Who was fighting? >> Um, the girl. >> Everybody. >> No. >> Girl, you ain't getting none of it. >> No. Yeah, >> of course you did. I know you did. >> Just just just a little bit. >> You got cuz like you said, that's your home girl. >> Yeah. This. Yeah. >> Tell me about that. How that happened? >> I didn't I didn't go I didn't go crazy though cuz she's small as hell. Like >> you're you're enough already. I don't need to be punching her, dragging her. I don't need to do all of that. I'm good. >> I give I get my little hit in and then that's it. I'm [clears throat] not >> Where'd you get it in? >> Um I don't know. I know. I know. I hit her though. Like in the beginning she got on the floor and I kind of like dragged her just a little bit. >> Just a little bit. And then and then I and then I stopped. I was just like >> it's hard. The adrenaline's going, you know, you got to >> Yeah. I was just like, "Okay, let me stop." And then they're just fighting and Yeah. Just just a little hit. So I didn't really fight her. That That's just crazy. >> What made it stop? >> I don't know. I don't know. That's a weird question. I I never >> like was she saying anything or Ashley? me >> cuz she you she just I never I never out of all fights I've been in I never saw somebody talk [ __ ] during a fight like why you going to be up talking >> Mhm. I never never met somebody that ever saying >> she was just like she was just you know straight talking oh you that's why he's just just throwing it out in the air >> and then like it was just such a weird fight like she was just like she just was kept on talking she was like aren't you my sister and it was just laughing all type it was just weird she was she was a weird person never I was like okay yeah >> so how did you get her phone. >> Um, she when when we was fighting, she had her phone in her hand. >> Mhm. >> I don't know who pulls up with their phone in her hand. If I'm about to fight, I'm dropping I'm dropping everything. >> Tell you that right now. >> Mhm. >> But it was on the floor. She said, "Grab the phone." I grabbed it and then Yeah. It was an hour. >> You said she said, "Grab the phone." >> Yeah. >> Anthony said, "Grab the phone." >> Yeah, I grabbed it. >> Okay. when she was um talking back while she was getting beat up. Like how that make you feel with the stuff that she was saying? >> Like I don't care. >> She's angry. She's saying >> cuz like >> she was Listen, I I don't get bothered by people who talk stuff. You got to like really do something to me, you know? >> She was talking about your brother though and your sister. >> Yeah. But it was just like so like you're So, you weren't mad. You was just nodding. Just like whatever. >> Yeah. I can't be that mad now. Come on. She knew what it was. You're going to talk. It's a fight. What do you expect? So, >> I'm just like I've been I've been in multiple fights. They talk about, you know, >> so yeah, I really didn't I I wasn't getting angry or talking. >> That was the case. I would have beat her up right after. No, I was chill. So you were just standing over them as they were fighting. >> Yeah. I'm just like what the [ __ ] But then I walked away. Damn was mad as hell. He ain't like I said every time I this is me getting this period he gets angry and I don't got time for him. >> But he was sleeping when the fight was happening outside, right? Cuz you said that she woke him up. >> Yes, she did. >> By she you mean Ashley, right? >> Uh-uh. >> Who woke Daniel up? >> She did. Um >> who's she? >> Anetta. Okay. So, you guys were outside fighting? >> No, we woke him up when Ash when we knew what Ashley was coming and then we was like, "Yeah, like she's about to get beat up cuz now you're getting kicked out. She think it's okay to come save you." Like, who is she? >> Yeah. Haven't been together for how long? Like that was weird. So, yeah, that's where that really started and all that. >> So, was he outside when the fight happened? It was he stayed in. He didn't he was really trying to restrain Anton like you know. >> But when you guys made it outside, this was before any fighting happened. >> What do you mean? >> You said that he was awake. >> Yes. >> And was just trying to restrain Antoneta. Was this before or after the fight we just talked about? >> He restrained her after the fight. >> Okay. Like before mid mid mid. I can't say after or before. It was like mid. So, was he outside when you guys fought? >> So, how could he restrain her midfight? >> Cuz it was like in front of the house. So, >> okay. So, all right. So, let's say so you guys were fighting. He's not outside. >> She says, "Get the phone." You get the phone. Then what happens? >> Then we put it in the house. He's like, "What the like? Give that her phone." So then the girl is banging on the door and then's like, "You're banging on the door. You better answer it. I'm not giving her back her." So I'm calling her husband, let her know that he's that she's cheating on her with my husband. So yeah, that was that. And then eventually she got her phone back. Nobody called the husband. She got it back after it was thrown around a few times. And then [sighs] yeah, I don't know what happened after she left. I I wasn't there when she left. Like I was in a back room. >> Mhm. >> So I really can't say what happened when she left. >> So you That's all I'm I'm confused on when he got woken up. Was it before or after you guys had the phone? >> Midfight. >> Cuz he wasn't outside. [clears throat] >> No. >> So I don't understand what you mean by midfight. >> Like like midfight when it got too too loud for him to realize like they're actually fighting right now and she got her phone. >> Oh, so when she was upstairs knocking on the door. >> Yeah, like when she >> Okay, so you guys had already fought got her phone and then he got woken up. >> Yes, >> because she was banging on the door to get her phone. >> No, no, no, no. We woke him up. She didn't wake Ashley didn't wake. >> So you guys woke him up to say, "Hey, your is knocking on the door." >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. We got our phone and if you want you can give it that. Yeah. Stuff like that. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> What was um how did you guys how did you guys find the messages again? >> His phone. >> Okay. Did you find it or did she find it? >> She found it. >> Answ >> Okay. How did she like Where were you at? Did you come How did that happen? >> Um she came to me. We're reading the messages and we were like, "Yeah, that's the girl that's that we just saw." Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Did you guys text her? >> Mm- What do you mean? >> Did you guys send messages to her? >> No, we don't got her number. >> No, I mean from his phone. >> Oh, from his phone? >> Mhm. >> No, I don't think so. No. >> Okay. Mhm. >> You sure? >> Yeah. cuz you you messed up your story a little bit. >> I already read the messages. You messed up a little bit. >> What was the messages? >> He wasn't getting kicked out. >> Oh, yes, he was. >> Mm- I don't know. What the hell? I I didn't I only saw the messages where he was cheating. So, I'm not sure if anybody texted her. You >> sure? You know. Yeah. Yeah. >> So, Antonet just sent the message. >> I'm positive myself. I'm positive. But yeah, I don't know if there's any messages sent to that lady cuz I I can't say I didn't know if there's messages sent, but >> you were with her when she was have come. >> You were still with her when she was texting her. I know you guys were sending messages. She already told us you guys were texting her. >> Yeah, but I don't know what said. >> So, she was just texting her. >> That's why I said we were getting kicked out. I don't know what was said. >> So, you didn't send the messages, she just sent the messages. >> Yeah, cuz I don't know what was said in those messages, but I know from seeing them, he was getting kicked out in the scenario. Wasn't no messages. So, yeah. >> Okay. So, you didn't see no messages answer when I just told you about it. And then when I text >> I saw the messages where he was cheating. >> What did those say? I'm feeling you, falling for you. Some bad, hurting each other. >> And that's when Anette showed those she showed those to you and that's when she started messaging her. >> Yeah, she showed those to me. >> Mhm. >> And [clears throat] then she sent a message to her. >> Antonette sent the message to Ashley. >> I don't know. Yeah, I guess. >> Did she tell you what she was sending? >> Did like the words and I don't know what she said. You mean you better know something? You knew she was outside. >> But yeah, I did know she was outside. >> Of course I knew she was outside cuz if she about to go fight, I'm coming with her. See? >> So you knew it happened before? Before we actually happened, cuz you guys talked about it. >> What do you mean? >> You going to go outside and fight her? >> Um, yeah. Yeah, we did talk about fighting her. Like we've been we was talking about it the night we saw them together and then it led to that. >> Mhm. >> Yeah. >> And you guys did it by messaging her through your brother's phone. >> Yeah. >> So she didn't know that you guys were going to go and fight her. Well, I don't know what was said of those messages. Like I said, I wasn't the one texting, but I know pretty sure she texted her to to come fight. So, yeah. >> You sure it was text messages just to fight or was it something else? >> I don't know. >> You don't know. or you don't want to tell this girl's [snorts] been honest this whole time. It's fine. She'll be straight up. >> You're smart. That was a smart [clears throat] move because you know if you text say come over, she's not going to come over like that. >> You know how you y'all were smart. Y'all finessed the hell out of that girl. >> Of course she she know that if we was to say come No, she was going to come fight regardless to be honest cuz she told us to meet her off the clock or whatever at 5:00 a.m. day. said, "Don't come. Dad, if we come, he's going to fire the sanator." So, we didn't fight her that night. >> But earlier in the day, she didn't know that she was walking into a fight. >> Yeah. Now she's dead. I know that [ __ ] >> Do you know how she died? Like >> from fighting >> the injuries of her death? >> They have to do a autopsy, but it was >> it was a result of her uh the injury she sustained during the fight. >> How does it make you feel? >> Make me feel like I'm going to hell. That I'm not going to lie. Yeah. Like that's really crazy. Life is crazy. >> Mhm. >> Like she's not a big girl. >> No, she isn't. That's why that's why I didn't want her. She She's too small. I said I I looked at her and I'm just like how old are you? She told me she was 30. I'm like you're you're like you're very small for your age to be 30. Like she looked sick skinny. So that was cool. I was like >> I heard she was pretty >> I don't know. Daniel. So, he said, "When I open the door, I saw her." I was like, "And I slammed the door cuz she was so up." >> Yeah, he did do that. He did do that. He did do that. He did do that. He did do that. >> He said he was shocked cuz I didn't I don't know cuz I really I really didn't see her after that. Like, they had me sitting in the back cuz they was on her. So, I didn't see none of that. >> But I know they was at the door arguing for that phone. So, you say when she was on the ground, you stomped her? >> I never said that. >> I heard you say you stomped her. >> I never No, I never said that. >> What What did you do when she was on the ground? >> Said I pulled her hair. >> Pulled her hair? >> Yeah. And I was like, "No." >> He said you got a few little licks in. >> Mhm. >> Mhm. >> He doesn't know what licks mean. >> You got to tell him. Oh, his love feels >> you got yours. >> Yeah. >> Trying to ruin break up your family. Sure that made you upset. >> No, I wasn't upset. >> No, you just It's just a thing. >> No, they've been on a rocky road for a minute. Like I knew I've been knew he was cheating when he when he told me. So I was just like, what do I expect from this? Is it her first order to go? >> You weren't scared that she he was going to go off with her. >> Was I scared he was going to go out for her? To be honest, me and my brother isn't really that close. We're trying to work on it. So, it's just like >> It just makes it easier when family's together. You got your sister and you got him. >> Yeah. But we I don't live with those, you know? >> I don't really feel that family connection. And it just like me and her close and I come visit her and he's just like my brother, the reason why I know her. So, >> were you guys um did you guys change clothes afterwards or were these the clothes you were wearing? >> Uh we changed we changed. We took a shower. It was early. >> Okay. What were you wearing? >> A t-shirt and some sweats. What colors? >> Oh, my gray sweatpants and my blue t-shirt. >> Okay. Are they in like the dirty We got to get them. So, are they in the dirty clothes in your room? Where are they at? >> They're in I think they're in the laundry room. I don't know. >> Okay. So, >> they're either in the laundry room or in my bathroom. In the closet. >> Okay. In your bathroom and closet. Were you wearing shoes? Not really, but yeah. >> What does that mean? >> Like I wore them, but they were taken off. >> Were they like slides? You took them off before the fight? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> All right. >> All right. And then so just to confirm, like you guys saw the messages of him cheating, texting his girl, >> and then um so y'all were like, "Okay, let's message." And then Antwanette started texting her. You didn't text her, so you don't know what was said, but you know that she was outside. So, Anette was just start Anette started texting her that resulted in her coming over. Is that right? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Do you know what clothes Anette was wearing? I forgot to ask her. >> I think it was black and a black pants, black shirt with pink design on it. >> Long sleeve, short sleeve, >> short sleeve shirt. >> Okay. So, black pants, but it's tight. So, like >> they were like spandex >> like leggings >> kind of. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Anything else? You think we need to know? >> No. You got any more questions? >> Not right now. >> No. >> Okay. >> All right. We'll be anything to knock on the door. Okay. Do you have like a watch on or your headphone or something like that? >> No, I had my headphones on. >> Okay. Cuz the music kept like coming through on your phone and stuff like that. >> Yeah. So, that's what that that's what I'm doing that. So, we just got to get that. >> It was the music and I'm like, why did my headphones just disconnect? >> No, you're good. It was something with the phone. Okay. Do you have the holder or you just had these? >> I just had those. >> Okay. All right. >> But detectives already had the phone evidence, the videos, and statements that contradicted that version. Janine would later admit to kicking and dragging Ashley during the fight. Ashley's own phone had also been taken during the altercation. They later returned it, but after everything that had taken place, it was just another humiliation ritual they made up. And just like that, bit by bit, the story they tried to make up kept collapsing. The same phone used to lure Ashley then helped expose what happened. As the evidence mounted, prosecutors moved forward against Antetta Stevens and Janine Gonzalez. Investigators argued that what happened was not a spontaneous disagreement, but a premeditated confrontation that turned deadly. >> And Stevens with a V. >> Stevens with a B. >> Mhm. [snorts] >> What's your date of birth? >> And is my sister-in-law okay? >> I'm sorry. Who's your sister-in-law? >> Janine. >> Janine. >> He's just getting he's still getting caught up on everything. because you know her mom's not here and you know I don't really >> Yeah, she's okay. She's over there. >> She's a minor. >> She's over there. She's over there listening to music. >> Okay. >> Um and you you stay at the address that they were at? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Do you work? >> Yeah. Mhm. >> Okay. Um >> what's your phone number? one. My email is >> I met your baby. He's so cute. >> So funny. >> He is your baby, >> girl. He's got he's got mouth. He's got pictures of us like he's like he's so cute. >> Yeah, he's three. Yeah, that's my baby. >> Very nice. [snorts] >> Um Facebook, Instagram, do you have? >> Um I don't really use social media like that. >> Okay. >> Yeah, it's not deactivated, but I don't really use it. I've been off of it for a while. >> Gotcha. Do you work? >> Yeah, I'm a Medicare specialist. >> Oh, nice. Where at? Yeah. Um I work from home. I work with Lucky you get to work from home. >> Yeah. I mean, it sounds pretty good, but it gets stressful at times. >> Well, the medical office, you're dealing with a lot of people who are infected. >> True. Yeah. Yeah. Pros and cons. >> Yeah. >> How old is your You have another son, too, right? >> Nine. >> Is that uh Do y'all share that child as well or no? Oh, okay. All right. >> So, like I said, he's still getting filled in on everything. I know you and I talked a little bit, but basically Beyonce was cheating on her. >> Oh, >> and the other girl showed up. Some stuff happened, but he's going to be the lead detective. So, he wants to get your side. I know you talked to some officers and stuff earlier. >> Um, so that's why he's here now, and he's just he's going to kind of handle everything. >> Okay. >> But I just wanted to explain all that to you. Okay. >> Yeah. And then besides because we are in like our headquarters, we and there's a situation obviously it's serious. >> Um he does have to read you something. But it's just so we can get everything that's going on. >> It's the same thing you always hear on TV if you ever watch cops or any of those movies with the cops. It's it's your warnings. Okay. So >> Sure. >> All right. So you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have a lawyer with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you will still have the right to stop answering at any time. You also have the right to stop answering at any time until you talk to a lawyer. Do you understand each of these rights I have explained to you? >> Mhm. >> Is that Yes. >> Yeah. I have these rights in mind. Do you wish to talk to us now? Um, well, I do want to speak with the lawyer just because of how sensitive the situation is. Um, I I will say that, you know, I don't go out looking to harm anybody. Um, that's not my intention. I do feel, you know, very remorseful about anything that has happened with that that young lady. Um, I'll also say that, you know, it wasn't my intention to even get into an altercation with her today. Um, she came over to my place of residence looking for my fiance. We argued, I was hit, we fought. Um, I feel really bad, but you know, I really I'm I don't know. I'm just No, this just this is just too much. >> Okay. [sighs] >> You okay? >> No, I'm not. I'm just, you know, I have kids. I I don't I don't know how to feel, man. I've been going through too much. Okay. So, you want to talk to a lawyer. So, what we're going to do is we stop at that point. We don't talk. All right. So, we're going to head out of here, but we just need you to wait in here. Okay. >> So, what's going to happen now? >> Um, I'm not sure yet. >> Both women were initially charged with serious felonies, including aggravated battery, robbery, and felony murder. The robbery charge stemmed from Ashley's phone being taken during the assault, while the felony murder charge reflected prosecutor's position that Ashley died as a result of the violent attack. When they were faced with all of the evidence, including the texts, surveillance, recorded footage, injuries, and statements that contradicted earlier claims, the case eventually moved toward plea agreements. Rather than going to trial on the original charges, both women later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and robbery by force. The court sentenced each of them to 30 years in prison with no possibility of parole until they meet the legal requirements of their sentence. It was a punishment that reflected both the brutality of the attack and the irreversible outcome that followed. And in many ways, the ending carried a tragic symmetry. One woman lost her life. Two young women lost decades of their own freedom. What began as jealousy, deception, and rage on a [music] road ended with prison sentences that will shape the rest of their adult lives. Because in the end, a betrayal that lasted minutes ended up costing them decades. But what do you think really changed the outcome of this case? Was it the moment Ashley received those fake messages, the decision to confront her in person, or the violence that followed after she arrived? Let me know what you think.
