On the evening of August 23rd, 2023 in Trippet Canyon, California retired Ventura Police Sergeant John Patrick Snowling walks into Cook's Corner, a popular biker bar hosting its weekly spaghetti night, carrying two handguns. Snowling heads straight to a table where his estranged wife, Marie Snowling, is sitting with her friend, Tanya Clark. Without saying a word, he shoots Marie in the face, wounding her but not killing her, then turns the gun on Tanya, who sprints for the door but collapses. And near the entrance, he then begins shooting randomly at others. Inside the bar next, Snowling walks out to his silver Toyota Tundra, grabs a 12-gauge shotgun and another handgun from the driver's side door, and keeps firing in the parking lot and surrounding areas. Deputies pull up and stop in the roadway at the bar entrance taking cover behind patrol cars. >> Where's he at? It's a male. Three handguns and one shotgun were recovered at the scene. The motive behind the Cook's Corner shooting was confirmed as domestic in nature stemming from John Patrick Snowling's failing marriage and resentment toward his estranged wife, Marie Snowling. The couple had been separated since 2020 and Marie filed for divorce in December 2022. After years of growing tension, friends and family told investigators that Snowling never accepted the end of the marriage. That day John drove more than 2,000 miles from Ohio to confront her. On May 30th, 2024, Minneapolis was shaken by one of the deadliest police shootings in its history. That afternoon inside an apartment building, 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed opened fire killing 32-year-old Osman Said Jama Alfod and critically wounding 36-year-old Mohamed Bashir Aden. After the gunfire inside, Mohamed fled outside where he attempted to steal an electric scooter. A passing driver intervened striking Mohamed with his vehicle and likely shattering his femur. A good Samaritan A stopped to help but Mohamed pulled a handgun with an extended magazine and shot him, leaving the man critically wounded in the street. Moments later, Officer Jamal Mitchell arrived as the first responder. >> 512, look like we have at least two victims outside at the location bleeding. >> 512, copy. >> Hey, are we up? Hey. Who shot you? >> Huh? >> Who shot you? Are >> [music] >> Are there victims inside? >> Spotting Muhammad injured on the ground, Officer Mitchell approached to help, only to be shot at point-blank range multiple times, less than 3 minutes after the ambush. Officers Nick Kapinos and Luke Kittick arrived at the scene. They stopped short of where Officer Mitchell had been shot, uncertain of the shooter's exact location or whether he was acting alone. >> Stop. Where? >> Uh, suspect is a black male wearing a hoodie. >> Where's it coming from? There were multiple shots fired. Multiple shots fired. >> Where is he? >> Where? WHERE'S THE GUY SHOOTING? >> BACK UP. Come here. >> Get on the ground. Back it up. YEAH, GO. BACK IT UP. GO. >> AFTER FINALLY LOCATING THE SHOOTER AND acknowledging fallen officer, they began closing in on Muhammad, still unsure whether he was acting alone. Meanwhile, the man kept firing at responders and bystanders, wounding a firefighter and multiple civilians. >> All right, let's go. Move up. Move. Move. Move. >> And shots still being fired. >> 1090, hold on. TWO BLOCKS OUT. >> LET'S MOVE. COME ON. >> WE'RE GOOD. WE'RE GOOD. WE'RE GOOD. >> He's still moving. >> Moving vehicle. Officer Jamal Mitchell was rushed to the hospital, but he could not be saved. Officer Luke Keytalk was shot during the exchange, but survived his wounds and was later released from the hospital. A firefighter struck by gunfire survived, as did the good Samaritan and other civilians. Less than two weeks later, Mohammad Bashir Aden wounded inside the apartment, also raising the total to four lives lost, including Mitchell Osman Jamali and the gunman himself.
